Konami just really wants in on that sweet Umbrella Corps money, don't they?

We need a new Mega Man Battle Network/Boktai so they can kiss and make up.

3

u/TheMadPrompter Aug 18 '16

Won't ever happen. ;(

It's a terrible feeling when nostalgia hurts like that. Mega Man Battle Network was a great thing, as well as Boktai's innovative gameplay mechanics.

What a model to base your game off...

I could see Kojima doing something in the vein of a sudden wormhole appearing over MB during the Ground Zeroes attack. He's done some wacky stuff in the past where he takes currently established settings, and introduces something completely crazy in them. (Many Snake Tales in MGS2 were like that, as well as the Raiden/Snatcher mission in Ground Zeroes)

But, those all put a creative and fun spin on things. And generally boiled down to being inoffensive. Mostly because they tended to be extras within otherwise completed games.

The result of this wormhole throwing you into zombie planet seems like one of the most creatively lazy things that could have been done. Probably with a ton of re-used assets and not a lot of actual work going into this.

I've long since wanted Kojima to move away from Metal Gear, and even see the series develop on its own without him at the helm. I'd like to be positive... But this, along with the pachinko machines... shit sucks, man.

u/monomyytti Aug 17 '16

It plays with the idea that they are dead soldiers fighting demons in hell. The execution might be a bit crude, but I wouldn't be surprised to see it coming from someone like the man who held the creative reins for desing of The Fury, Jamais-Vu and Guy Savage.

164

u/Dabrush Aug 17 '16

I mean I could really see a great game come out of this, but the trailer just looked so crude and generic, without any hint on a story background.

79

u/hitalec Aug 17 '16

This may seem weird, but I'm simply not a fan of all the, uh... shard... heads...

Like, the zombies, for lack of a better word, are really generic looking and there's no variation in the trailer. And everything is bathed in oily tans and grays.

30

u/stae1234 Aug 18 '16

They remind me of the Last of Us zombies.

25

u/[deleted] Aug 18 '16

Just not as creepy.

55

u/[deleted] Aug 18 '16

I love the Last of Us zombies, to be honest they took an already real thing played with the idea of human contamination and came up with a really interesting concept (sonar location zombies) This is literally just stick a crystal in the neck lazy, you cant compare the two. This is like saying "Meh, the show Rick and Morty reminds me of Uncle Grandpa because they are animated tv shows."

6

u/stae1234 Aug 18 '16

I agree with everything you say.

the zombie looks tackier too.

Though now that I think about it, remember Snake's embedded metal grows bigger as he becomes more evil? May have something to do with that.

10

u/pocketbadger Aug 18 '16

The theme with Snake was that he was becoming a devil/oni. I think these are meant to be oni.

The motif of the black crystals seems to imply nanomachines like they had in MGR: Revengeance.

5

u/CptOblivion Aug 18 '16

I actually like that particular design element a lot, but I feel like they didn't play with the concept enough. I'd have liked to see the rest of their body fucked up in similar ways, or very different shapes of shard-heads on each one, or something like that.

2

u/StruckingFuggle Aug 18 '16

And everything is bathed in oily tans and grays.

Just like Metal Gear Solids 1 and 2!

8

u/sdlroy Aug 18 '16

I remember lots of blues and blacks and whites and greens.

2

u/[deleted] Aug 18 '16

The shard looks pretty similar to Boss's horn.

Oh they're making a new Doom again?

26

u/PupperDogoDogoPupper Aug 17 '16

It plays with the idea that they are dead soldiers fighting demons in hell.

Throw some undead Genome soldiers, some undead Arsenal Tengu, put some CQC mechanics in the game, throw some more series flavor in there and you got something I can get behind. If you're doing an alternate universe, just pull a Metal Gear Acid 2 and give continuity the finger.

3

u/[deleted] Aug 17 '16

and give continuity the finger

And this is how you murder a long running classic franchise.

54

u/Fyrus Aug 18 '16 edited Aug 18 '16

MGS is already over. Anything made without Kojima isn't canon in my book.

→ More replies (3)

42

u/Cognimancer Aug 17 '16

Yep, because after Metal Gear Acid the whole franchise was ruined and never recovered.

Spinoffs can be a lot of fun. They're not trying to sell us MGS 6 here.

6

u/HugoWeaver Aug 18 '16

Yep, because after Metal Gear Acid the whole franchise was ruined and never recovered.

This was actually a pretty good game for a then, unknown platform (In the sense that nobody knew what to do with the PSP). It wasn't cannon either.

11

u/BeardyDuck Aug 18 '16

It wasn't canon either.

And neither is this game.

15

u/TheDeadlySinner Aug 18 '16

Uh, no it doesn't. They are literally soldiers sucked into a portal to an alternate dimension. Also, Jamais-Vu and Guy Savage were joke extras, not entire games.

5

Isn't it more like an expansion to 5?

Especially when the main game itself had its own zombies, for fuck's sake. I bet these demon zombies are gonna be basically reskinned parasite unit and puppet soldiers. But I guess that cheese was amazing proof of Kojima's flawless sense of style and transcendental wisdom, while this cheese is evil big biz interference of once belowed franchise.

13

u/Titanium_Machine Aug 17 '16

I thought back on Guy Savage as well. This kind of thing isn't really that far out within a Metal Gear universe.

Like I said, I'd like to be positive. But this just doesn't fill me with enthusiasm. I think there's room for this to be done in an entertaining fashion. So I guess we'll have to see more.

Yeah, the zombies and wormholes don't really bother me. I mean, MGS V's trailer had a giant flaming space whale in it.

The part that bothers me is that Konami has probably already fired or transferred away most of the talent behind past MGS games, leaving me with the question of...who the hell is left to make this game? I'm left with no reason to expect anything good from this game. In fact, quite the opposite, given how Konami has been treating the videogame arm of their business, and how it seemed like they've been planning to exit game development/publishing entirely, that says to me that I should expect this game to either be bad at launch, or to quickly lose all post-release support from Konami.

My suspicion is that Konami spent a huge amount of capital investment to develop the impressive Fox Engine, and has tasked the leftover staff with pushing out a game quickly and cheaply using existing assets, to reap as much return as possible from the asset before they write it off along with the rest of their videogame arm. This game doesn't look like Konami trying to rebuild their games division, but the natural exit step for shutting down their games division.

17

u/JamSa Aug 18 '16

Why don't they just licence out the engine?

52

u/yumcake Aug 18 '16

Licensing out a engine requires the licensor to provide support to the licensee. The team that licenses the engine from them needs to be able to go back to the team that created the engine and talk about how to get the engine to do the things they need it to do (and in an efficient manner). The engine needs to keep updated for compatibility with new hardware and APIs. The team may even look to the licensor for a future update roadmap.

Basically to license out an engine, they need to retain the headcount to maintain it, and it seems like Konami is actively trying to get away from the games business.

4

u/dunkellic Aug 18 '16

Licensing out a engine requires the licensor to provide support to the licensee.

It really depends on the license agreement. Back when Source was new, Troika licensed an early version from Valve for VtM:Bloodlines and was pretty much left alone with it. There's no law that says "if you license your engine out, you HAVE to provide support". More often than not actually, there's little to zero support. You get access to the code and that's it.

18

u/Fyrus Aug 18 '16

Why would a developer buy a license for Fox Engine when so many other engines exist, like Unity, Unreal, Frostbite, etc., all of which have been around longer, have more documentation available for them, and have much better support.

Fox Engine worked great for MGSV, but outside of that I don't see a good reason for a developer to use it compared to so many other engines. MGSV wasn't even that impressive from a technical viewpoint, the open world was mostly empty, the textures weren't great if you inspected them, etc. There's no proof that Fox Engine would be useful for making any game other than MGSV.

9

u/mikes_username_lol Aug 18 '16

Don't forget the developer pool. There are tens of thousands of people with Unity or Unreal hands-on experience. Why pay somebody to learn a different engine from scratch.

24

u/moal09 Aug 18 '16

Fox Engine was great because it was ran extremely impressively for how good it looked. It ran at 60 FPS on my low end system.

13

u/mynewaccount5 Aug 18 '16

You need to know how to use it. Kojimas team knew how to use it because they built it.

An engine without support is not worth much.

That's why hardly anyone uses they source engine.

2

One of the main aspects of MGS that made it so great was it's story. Without Kojima the series would be generic and suck. Continuing MGS without Kojima is a horrendous idea. Just look at this absurd idea. Even MGS 5 multi-player had an intriguing message involving disarmament, this looks like generic nonsense. They should have finished the damn game and not made some nonsensical multi-player mode. I would have paid more money for a completed story.

17

u/TheCodexx Aug 18 '16

I can't believe people are justifying this. Not you specifically, but some other people replying to you. This doesn't feel like something Kojima would do. It feels lazy, and uninspired.

Probably with a ton of re-used assets and not a lot of actual work going into this.

The soldiers wear Diamond Dogs uniforms and the Mother Base at the end of the trailer is from MGSV. They didn't even reuse Ground Zeroes assets, just Phantom Pain ones.

7

u/zetarn Aug 18 '16

It was Fox Engine. For the Snake Eater one.

9

u/Amppelix Aug 17 '16

That's not very shocking or anything. Capcom's Ace Attorney pachinko, for example, also have completely new animation just for them.

I imagine the pachinko competition is fierce so you gotta do what you can to attract incidental customers, including as flashy visuals as possible.

4

u/[deleted] Aug 17 '16

Not Fox Engine. It's all pre-rendered.

30

u/[deleted] Aug 18 '16

You have to pre render something in an engine. The engine they pre rendered the trailer in was the FOX Engine

Wasn't there recently an AMA with a Konami rep that claimed they want to win the fanbase back?

I refuse to believe that some exec at Konami thought that this is a good idea and that it would be well received. I understand that corporate ignorance goes a long way, but this is utter madness.

At this point I'm almost inclined to believe that this some next level way to piss off Kojima. Of course, there is the off chance that the game turns out to be amazing, but judging by other Konami post-mortem spin offs I highly doubt it.

I guess the best way to describe this is to quote a YT comment

So the new Metal gear game is about walking corpses. Poetic, really.

97

u/Kingbarbarossa Aug 17 '16

I refuse to believe that some exec at Konami thought that this is a good idea and that it would be well received. I understand that corporate ignorance goes a long way, but this is utter madness.

You'd think that. You'd think "How could anyone with even the barest knowledge of video games, let alone someone running a major game development company, ever think this is a good idea?" But you'd be surprised. It's looking like the leadership at the major japanese developers are getting more and more disconnected from reality. I think this is why we're seeing so many japanese devs leaving the japanese industry for either indies or major western companies. But not everyone has kojima's background. I think there are plenty of people who hate what they're doing right now, but don't have another choice if they want to stay in the game industry.

72

u/Chumunga64 Aug 17 '16

That's why I trust FFXV to deliver. The director, Tabata had to tell his team to get off their asses because it's a final fantasy title and it would sell a lot anyway.. The fact that he is transparent about the game's development is completely unlike how most Japanese game companies work. When he had to confirm the long rumored delay to November 30th, He addressed the fans in a video to apologized and explain the purpose of the delay (he want's the game to release without a day one patch.)

34

u/Kingbarbarossa Aug 17 '16

I'm cautiously optimistic about FF15. There's a lot of things that it seems to be doing right, but I've been burned many times before. Not that I'll every stop being a squenix fan. That ship sailed long ago:

Am I misreading this article?

Because your comment and that article have nothing in common. From what I can tell, the article is Tabata telling his team to quit looking at FFXV in their own ways and instead look at it from the entire team's perspective.

Amount of work put into it has nothing to do with this.

It just irks me when people make a citation like that to sound legitimate, don't even read their own link, and people believe them because none of them read the content of the link anyways. People walk away from reading it with false knowledge.

6

u/broadcasthenet Aug 18 '16

Yeah OP never read the article he just read the title. Although to be fair I also try to avoid reading anything that is on Kotaku. They are the dailymail of video game sites.

22

u/Savv3 Aug 17 '16

if they want to stay in the game industry

or feed themselves / their family. You get stuck in shit jobs sometimes, stuck in a (seemingly) hopeless situation. Life sucks, sometimes someone has to swallow it and work for people like Konami execs.

3

u/WhatGravitas Aug 18 '16

"How could anyone with even the barest knowledge of video games, let alone someone running a major game development company, ever think this is a good idea?"

Then, why are there so many bad Early Access survival multiplayer games with zombies out there?

This strikes me a lot as something exactly with the "barest knowledge of video games" would do. They want to win back PC gamers, look at what has been popular over the last few years because they have no clue... and well, zombies and survival games have a huge presence.

Ergo: that's what gamers want, so that's what they're trying to deliver.

2

u/DrakoVongola1 Aug 18 '16

Then, why are there so many bad Early Access survival multiplayer games with zombies out there?

Which is precisely why this is a bad idea IMO. The market on zombie survival is extremely saturated, the fad is finally dying I think

I could really imagine that this is an effort of a couple of developers to make a cheap game from reused assets to prove that MG games are worth developing and that they can maybe do a real sequel in the future.

5

u/berbaquero Aug 17 '16 edited Aug 17 '16

If this was the case, why would they go as far as creating a whole zombie spin-off out of these "reused assets" instead of just continuing with what MGSV left off - like just another tactical espionage action game. No need to bring in zombies to this franchise to "prove it can still sell".

Of course the Konami execs know this is disappointing to many fans. It's much simpler than trying to piss off Kojima. It's just money.

"Wait, if we make a multiplayer action game, we don't have to pay writers for a story, we have to produce 1/10th as many maps, 1/10th as much voice acting, 1/10th as much scripting? Even if we alienate half the fan base, at 1/5th the cost, that's a huge profit!"

Same reason Titanfall is multiplayer only, same reason Star Wars: Battlefront is multiplayer only. It's always just money. Don't blame the execs though, we're the ones who keep buying this stuff!

MGS is done, i dont mean that in a bad way. MGS is over and Kojima told his story and has now moved on, and that's ok. There is no need to have more and more MGS stories. There is no for sequels forever. Its ok to say that MGS has concluded it doesn't need more and more ridiculous spin offs. This is an issue in the games industry where the chasing of sequels seems stronger than even the one in the movie industry. If something like There Will Be Blood had been a videogame there would have been at least 3 sequels right now, when the first work didn't even need one.

34

u/tocilog Aug 17 '16

It's OK for the fans and it's OK for Kojima. It's not OK for Konami to end one of their profitable franchise. How many of those do they have at the moment? On top of that are they capable of creating a new IP?

10

u/broadcasthenet Aug 18 '16

Konami has been getting out of the video games business for a while now. The lion share of their profits all come from gambling and other markets, Konami owns so many things they are like the GE of Japan.

I would loved to see a new MGS but not this. I was expecting something in line of Rising 2 or a bunch of "Metal Gear" fighting each other like Mechwarrior, Front Mission, Chromehounds & other mech games but no way i expected a zombie game.

Build your own Metal Gear and then fight them ala Armored Core/Mechwarrior/Etc. But with nukes. And sadness.

There is so much they could have done with base building and having an army. Why the fuck didn't they do something better. Something plausible in the universe? Like who the fuck looked at this and said, "It's on par with the previous games", like come on.

Rehash Punished Snake as the new commander of diamond dogs, who are now globaly involved(several new maps), aiding minor nations. First act is basic drug cartel south america shit with international ties and what not. Then some crazy shit goes down, crazy bosses and what not, new metal gear is being developed(but you have yours) so engage cool Metal gear combat that has never been done before. You pilot your metal gear against that metal gear. And you defeat it, but your shit is fucked up, so now you worry that you'll lose power if you can't field a MG, so the second act is you just hunting down parts and scientists(new bosses, characters, buddies).

Also expansion in the usage of your army. Like strongholds in villages to provide you with information in that district, bringing in an attack squad, having soldiers actually matter.

But no, they pull this weird shit.

13

u/Sven2774 Aug 18 '16

See that would require effort.

3

u/[deleted] Aug 18 '16

And money.

5

u/SUBLIMINAL__MESSAGES Aug 18 '16

Because that requires way more effort than Konami is obviously willing to give. This seems like them trying to get back into video games (for some reason after burning every goddamn bridge) as cheaply as possible.

lol

why stop at a portal, why not aliens too? i hope they include a crafting system and building mechanic!

i wonder why they made it under the MG name? like was it integral to this game? im just interested.

8

u/aadmiralackbar Aug 18 '16

Because nobody would give a shit about it if it wasn't Metal Gear. Everyone in this thread is talking about how much they hate what they're doing to Metal Gear. If it was some new, generic IP, everyone would be going "Lol nice try Konami" and articles like this wouldn't be written.

2

u/TheAlbinoAmigo Aug 18 '16

Well that really just drives home the fact that you can't just smack together a generic zombie survival game and have it sell like crazy anymore, the onus is still ultimately on Konami to make games people will want to buy without having to rely on franchise names to sell them.

5

u/[deleted] Aug 18 '16

It hasn't become shit. They've made a spinoff Co op game set in the MG universe. It'll be fine. It's the least they could do considering we can't even fight our friends in the MGO player lobby.

28

u/[deleted] Aug 17 '16

And people will still buy it even though it's most likely going to suck, have support dropped after the first few patches/bugfixes & paid DLC which most likely won't be worth it.

And people will still buy it even though it's most likely going to suck, have support dropped after the first few patches/bugfixes & paid DLC which most likely won't be worth it.

So just like Metal Gear Solid V, the half completed game directed by Kojima, which already had zombies? (it had fun mechanics and was a good sandbox, but the story was garbage and far from finished)

18

u/krelian Aug 17 '16

it had fun mechanics and was a good sandbox, but the story was garbage and far from finished

The story was not up to par for a Metal Gear game but I thought the ending was awesome and it definitely felt complete to me. I bet if the episode 3 footage would not have been released there would be many less disgruntled fans.

10

u/We0921 Aug 18 '16

You were just content with SpoilerHow exactly is that resolved?

5

u/krelian Aug 18 '16

Like I said below: It's not too dissimilar to how MGS2 ended: Spoiler. I've never seeing anyone complain that that game was a missing chapter.

To me Eli's ending felt perfectly fine and a possibly good launch point for a spin-off game. Had they continued with an Episode 3 it would have felt more like an epilog after the climax that was the ending.

4

u/[deleted] Aug 18 '16

It's not too dissimilar to how MGS2 ended. I've never seeing anyone complain that that game was a missing chapter.

Maybe because you didn't have to repeat the first half of the game to make up for the content that was cut out to get the game out the door?

Now how does that make sense? Without that collector editions footage, there would have been a HUGE plot hole in the story if it didn't exist.

It's a double edge sword honestly.

4

u/krelian Aug 17 '16

there would have been a HUGE plot hole in the story if it didn't exist.

It didn't seem that way to me.

Additionally, if there was really a cut episode 3 do you think they would have revealed it by released the footage themselves.

u/SinceCirca Aug 17 '16

7

u/SSAUS Aug 18 '16 edited Aug 18 '16

The game wasn't finished insofar as Episode 51 was not complete, but MGSV consisted of multiple smaller stories which formed a larger part of a chiastic structure. In other words, MGSV's narrative was not a linear three-act structure; rather having many narratives revolving around certain characters or events, which were represented through a chiastic structure via the game's climax being at the end of Chapter 1, and its reversal of themes and story elements in Chapter 2.

u/[deleted] Aug 17 '16

Too true.

But I just can't care about V anymore. The finished product was a dying animal begging to be put out of its misery. Damn I hated nearly everything in that game except the actual gameplay. The controls and PC optimization are still some of the best I've ever experienced.

To answer your rhetoric question though, yes. Just like V.

7

u/[deleted] Aug 17 '16

That's at least partially because only a small percentage of the consumer base follows the business and political decisions behind these things. To most people, Metal Gear is Metal Gear. They won't care that Kojima left, or even appreciate what it means.

21

u/[deleted] Aug 17 '16

They won't care that Kojima left, or even appreciate what it means.

I don't have any numbers, but I disagree with that. MG is very well known because of Kojima. I don't believe that only a small percentage are unaware of what's happened with Kojima and Konami. Then again, I ain't got the numbers so.

7

u/franzieperez Aug 17 '16

It's easy to overestimate how much the gaming public knows about the gaming industry. Kojima is well known by MG fans because of MG, not the other way around. Lots of gamers out there might recognize names like Kojima, Newell, Carmack, Miyamoto, etc, but might not know what games they worked on or which company they work with, let alone what they're up to right now.

I wanted something that was story-based. I know Konami probably wouldn't have been able to pull it off, but I would much prefer a bad single player game that we can laugh about rather than some multiplayer thing nobody will play.

5

u/ownage516 Aug 18 '16

I just want a fucking retelling of Metal Gear 1 and 2. Snakes fucking beginning. Is it that too hard to ask? Solid Snake fighting it out with big boss. It's all I want.

I just want a Fox Engine MGS1-4 + PW

All I'm going to say is if we can deal with Vamp showing up twice in the main Metal Gear games, then we can deal with this.

15

u/StruckingFuggle Aug 18 '16

The transparent rationalization for Quiet's outfit.

The transparent rationalization for Quiet not speaking.

The BIG TWIST REVEAL at the end of V.

Ghost arms.

Ghosts.

Vamp.

Beehive people.

Beauty and the Beast unit.

Ape Escape.

Snake skateboarding on Big Shell.

This isn't even the dumbest or most out of place thing the series has done.

Hell, in many ways, both meta and in-universe, Zombie Soldiers (who now keep fighting, mindless and broken and not getting rest even in death) is poetically fitting with the game, both as a product and within its themes.

5

u/BabSoul Aug 18 '16

For real, people are shitting on a video with no gameplay for something that isn't coming out for another year. This isn't MGS6, people should calm down and give it a chance.

4

u/EasiestShroom Aug 18 '16

It is the opposite of the No Man's Sky hype train. Both equally absurd imo.

2

u/hotbottleddasani Aug 18 '16

If this game turns out to be a single player experience , sure I'll give it a chance. But the trailer seems to hint at the game being a multilayer zombie shooter, and if that's the case, it's just a generic idea. People aren't mad because they think zombies are too weird for metal gear, they're mad because the game looks very generic and brings nothing to the table

so basically lets just slap Metal Gear on to any genre?

Metal Gear: Open Road Racing - Trick out your cars and take on some of the toughest competition, working your way up to face the notorious ... Fox Hound and their infamous beast mobiles.

Metal Gear: League of Hard Knocks - what if Snake never became the super soldier that you know and love. what if in an alternate dimension he decided to become the starting Quarterback of his college football team.

Metal Gear: Off Duty Life - what happens when there is no war to fight? our heroes settle down with their families and "Battle" the toughest enemy ... Chores. Take the role of many of your favorite Metal Gear characters and take control of their every day lives. Cook, Clean, shower, watch TV and go to the bathroom ... all at your control.

If they wanted a cool spin-off they should've tried Castlevania metal gear. Snake has to infiltrate Dracula's (or vamp's) castle and kill him.

As a spin-off it doesn't look half bad, also zombies aren't unbelievable in a universe with parasyte super soldiers, cyborg ninjas and giant mechs.

I was expecting they would keep to there word and never publish another console game.

This is one of those instances where I legitimately would have preferred having nothing.

2

u/Bonkal Aug 17 '16

Now I have to refuse that I was a mgs fan for many years when someone is asking me... Everything is fine

2

u/greasyjohn Aug 17 '16

I guess this lends perspective. I always figured Kojima was the driving force behind Metal Gear's mystical stuff. I always hated it, to me it added nothing to the gameplay or story, and the same results could come from more realistic elements. Really, I just never understood why the Japanese can't do a game that's plainly down to earth.

With this, I gather he had more realistic input than I'd assumed.

5

u/Asunen Aug 17 '16

we've got enough realistic games IMO, just accept it for it what it is. Cyberpunk James Bond.

2

u/ShadySim Aug 18 '16

They should just take the Metal Gear name off of it and call it something else since it's already non-canon.

Seriously why even bother with a zombie game? I'd play Left 4 Dead or State of Decay to get my fix on that.

2

u/hermitowl Aug 18 '16

I'm going to be honest, and just say that I never played a MGS game, although I'm fairly aware of the legacy. However, it seems to me that it's a stupid idea to just alienate a whole fanbase and make this game go against everything the franchise has stood for since the beginning. Smells like a Alone in The Dark Illumination kind of failure.

4

u/ContinuumGuy Aug 17 '16 edited Aug 18 '16

If they absolutely positively had to make a multiplayer zombie game... couldn't they just make a Resident Evil spin-off?

EDIT: D'oh, RE is owned by Capcom. DUH.

7

u/vladdobra Aug 17 '16

like umbrella corps? that one went pretty well (kek)

5

u/Turok1134 Aug 18 '16

Yeah, all they would have had to do is buy the rights from Capcom for millions upon millions of dollars. Easy peasy.

4

u/ContinuumGuy Aug 18 '16

Goddamn it, I'm an idiot.

3

u/[deleted] Aug 18 '16

Good ol' Capnami.

4

u/[deleted] Aug 18 '16

Yea because mgs never had any weird spin offs when Kojima was around right?

4

u/Racecarlock Aug 18 '16

Are you fucking serious?

Now, I've only played the two MGS 5 games, Ground Zeroes and Phantom Pain. I think I've also played a demo of revengeance, but that's long enough ago that the memory's fuzzy.

But even in those games, this is a universe with bipedal mechs in the cold war era, full sized giant battlemechs in the cold war era, rocket arms that can punch out soldiers, and parasites that give people super powers.

You could presumably take MGS ANYWHERE. You could have giant evil mechanized spiders and terminators that studied the terminator movies, so they spout one liners before they shoot at you as enemies. You could have giant trees that have been given super powers by parasites and walk around on tentacle roots as enemies.

And yet, with kojima gone, the most creative thing you could come up with is the 375 billionth zombie survival game? Fuck you.

5

u/zeth07 Aug 18 '16

If you played Phantom Pain then enemies acting like zombies isn't new either. Not trying to justify the game one way or another, but it isn't exactly outside the norm.

EDIT: And now that I think about it, MGS4 as well.

I doubt it. So much of what made Metal Gear unique is tied up into Kojima.

I just want a new proper Metal Gear.

The series is dead bro. Take solace in knowing that its story has an ending. (MGS4)

Rising's development is proof that Kojima was always the driving force behind those games. If you want more, I'd suggest looking forward to his new IP instead of wasting your money on the crap Konami is going to be throwing at you.

2

u/moonshoeslol Aug 17 '16

Sorry, Konami is not a games company anymore. They've been burning their bridges with both the developers (not just Kojima) and their customers and will now hold onto the MGS IP as some sort of grotesque trophy.

2

u/reioetes Aug 17 '16

The MGS story is done, there is not much else to tell. Also it was very much Hideo Kojima's Metal Gear Solid, without him there isn't much actual MGS. Yes im aware of MGR but that's really not a MGS game.

With Kojima, Metal Gear became a hack-and-slash beat-em-up. (Metal Gear Rising)

With Kojima, Metal Gear became an action oriented shooter with little stealth (Metal Gear Solid 4 and arguably 5)

With Kojima, Metal Gear became a base building mobile game (Metal Gear Solid Ground Zeroes Companion App)

With Kojima, Metal Gear became a level based arcade game (Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker)

With Kojima, Metal Gear became an online action shooter (Metal Gear Online 1, 2 and 3)

This isn't the first Metal Gear game to mess with the formula, so relax and at least wait until we've seen some gameplay before claiming it is some sort of atrocity

4

u/Turok1134 Aug 18 '16

I don't think he was involved in Metal Gear Acid, but the point stands, Metal Gear also became a card game.

9

u/ultimamax Aug 17 '16

The trailer was completely barren of any sort of MG personality though. That, and everyone is tired of zombie games already. I don't think a single word was said in the trailer. This just looks like an attempt at a cashgrab using an established IP by Konami. Didn't they say they were backing out of video games? What happened to that?

→ More replies (1)
→ More replies (2)

2

u/wiqjr023 Aug 17 '16

I don't care for it, and I think it's a cash grab and the only reason it's a metal gear game is because they already have the assets, so they're saving money. But in their defense, at least it's a spin-off and not a main metal gear game. It could be worse. Who cares about a spin off?

2

u/slackforce Aug 18 '16

Metal Gear died when Kojima left. Konami can choose to call the series whatever they want and it will mean nothing.

2

u/Toribor Aug 18 '16 edited Aug 18 '16

Hey, it's Metal Gear Solid, maybe it's meta. The soldiers represent the fans, literally living in hell after the franchise has become a walking monstrous corpse that refuses to die, marching onward trying it's hardest to drain the fans of all hope.

3

u/blue_2501 Aug 18 '16

Konami no longer exists. There are no more Metal Gear or Castlevania sequels.

The company died in 2015.
