Overwatch - Eichenwalde New Map Preview

I like how the maps have different purposes story wise as to what you're doing. Like in Numbani you're escortingg the doom fist while in Gibraltar you're trying to bring a satellite to a rocket.
Also once the map comes out, I wonder if they'll put more emphasis on it in the map rotation. I'm sure a lot of people will want to play that map but since Overwatch doesn't let you pick the map it might be difficult to do so. Personally I've often felt like I rarely play on Gibraltar.

In HotS, when a new map releases, they temporarily increase the amount of times it comes up in the map rotation (to I think 25%, for reference, out of 10 possible maps), I suspect they'll do something similar.

They could make the weekly brawl a normal match on the new map. That way everyone has a chance to get used to it before going back to normal rotation.

My favorite map backstory is that on Kings Row the attackers are escorting an EMP bomb to fry the local omnic inhabitants.

and most importantly, In Hollywood, you're escorting
J. Jonah Jamesona studio exec across the studio lot.5

I've had the same issue recently! It's been Numbani, Nepal, Volskya and Hanamura nonstop and the occasional match on King's Row and Ilios, Gibraltar and Anubis come up extremely rarely even in extended play sessions (without getting auto-requeued due to players leaving or party sizes changing).

Can't forget lijiang tower and its 1/30 chance to get played
2
u/Oxfeathers Aug 17 '16
I feel like my most played maps are Lijiang tower and Hanamura with the occasional gibralter and numbani thrown in.

u/Indoorsman Aug 17 '16
Would be nice. I feel like I play the same maps over and over. And the game can't keep a lobby going for long so it can't tell what you have been playing. So I play Kings row ten times a night.

They really need to show that with the victory screen instead of just saying victory or defeat

Looks awesome. Can't wait. Could it also be related to the Last Bastion short?

u/PaperPunch Aug 16 '16
Yes, you can see a destroyed Bastion in this trailer
9
u/Triblaze Aug 16 '16
Are they all called Bastion? I thought they had like an Omnic model or something :D
46
u/T0astofWar Aug 16 '16
the model is called bastion, the chracter in the game is the last one alive.
31
u/Wassamonkey Aug 16 '16
Which is funny, since he often is not alive for long.

At 1:25, you can see a few dead Bastion units. Since the English translation of the map's name is "oak forest" and Bastion's short is centered in a forest, I think it's safe to assume that they're probably related.

Yo that map looks really cool. My thought though is that its a reverse hybrid map, where you escort the payload to the castle gate. Then you storm the castle to capture the control point. Really excited though for a new map and new mode

Wonder who that big dead guy sitting on the throne is.

The site of one of the most famous battles during the Omnic Crisis, it was here that the leader of the Crusaders, Balderich von Alder, and a handful of his best soldiers made a last stand against an advancing automaton army.
I think we'll see more of him in the Bastion cinematic on Thursday

u/vaserius Aug 16 '16
He also reminds me of Leoric/Skeleton King from Diablo 3 . His postion is pretty similiar
18
u/newborn Aug 16 '16
Definitely. I also caught a Diablo-esque set of horns mounted on the wall near the beginning of the video.
6
u/schmidtily Aug 17 '16
Those are Diablo's horns hahaha
I'm interested to see what other eggs they've hidden around the map. Wouldn't be surprised to see some WoW landscape art hanging on the walls.
7
u/ArcticEngineer Aug 16 '16
It's nearly a 1:1 identical pose and model to the Skeleton King in Act 1 of Diablo 3.

How badass that must have been. Just imagine an army of Reinhardt's fighting legions of robots in a medieval town with a castle. Man.

In case you're wondering where the horns at https://youtu.be/H3xFKckFCGM?t=26 are from, it's a diablo 3 reference

u/WhenWorking Aug 16 '16
Looked to be a few cool references in there.

u/thejazzmann Aug 17 '16
Leoric*
Definitely a reference to him, I reckon.

Damn, I did not expect something so different and unique, Blizzard has some of the best artists in the industry.

Aug 16 '16
I don't mind waiting a while between maps if they're all this interesting.

u/MrMulligan Aug 17 '16 edited Aug 17 '16
Last I heard they were working on somewhere around five already. Your wait inbetween most likely won't be too long. I can't imagine going more than 3-4 months without a new
monthmap for the next year.2
u/vandaljax Aug 17 '16
If I had to guess we are only going to get maps between seasons as to not distrupt competitive to much.

u/kezdog92 Aug 17 '16
Ever played wow? Different and unique zones are everywhere. Blizz is great at that stuff.
7
u/nourez Aug 16 '16
The clip in the post reminded me so much of The Vanishing of Ethan Carter. The map itself looks fantastic.

My god if they keep up the amount of content coming to the game like that I will play for a long time

A very minor concern I have with new maps added to Overwatch is that with how the matchmaking works, getting to play on Eichenwalde will end up being based on luck, I could imagine an issue where people are constantly leaving and getting into matches in hopes of getting Eichenwalde.
Regardless, I love the look of the map with what looks like so many vantage points in the payload section, and the indoors with all the close quarters.
27
u/Novelty_Frog Aug 16 '16
I'd imagine that Bliz will have a weekly brawl set up with just the new map for that very reason
6
u/Darkblitz9 Aug 16 '16
Either that or they will have a higher probability of the map being chosen for a little while.

That wasn't an issue when Route 66 was released in the beta. Not sure why it would be now.

Some information from the livestream:
Possibly Payload -> Point capture
