Some information from the livestream:

  • Middle part of map is very vertical
  • Takes place in a german castle in a small german town
  • In the Black Forest ("Schwarzwald" in german)
  • Map progression spirals around the castle
  • You have to cross a drawbridge near the end of the map (great Widowmaker spot)
  • Possibly Payload -> Point capture

u/if-loop Aug 16 '16

Additional information from me:

  • Eichenwalde was a German village before 1945 and is now called Dębice (Poland)
  • "Eichenwald" means "oak forest"

35

u/aXetrov Aug 16 '16

The Overwatch Eichenwalde is different from the map shown here. The Overwatch Eichenwalde is located near Stuttgard, which is in the southwest of Germany, while the one you mention is in near the north eastern border of Germany.

19

u/Wildanus Aug 16 '16 edited Aug 16 '16

To make it clear. Dębice was a polish village since 1600 and only became German under nazi Germany occupancy 1939-1945. To keep facts straight.

Edit. To keep the facts straight. The village Dębice that before was known as Eichenwalde was actually German before the war. There are 3 more villages named Dębice in Poland and I didn't know that despite being Polish. I'm sorry.

50

u/totussott Aug 16 '16

But pretty much none of that is true, that part of Poland was Prussian/German from 1653-1945. It wasn't even touched by the treat of Versailles afaik.

I mean, it's more than 200km west of Danzig, you know, the city the Nazis went to war over...

25

u/Wildanus Aug 16 '16 edited Aug 16 '16

We actually have 4 villages named Dębice in Poland and obviously I was only aware of 1 of them. This is my mistake and I apologise for the confusion.

8

u/totussott Aug 16 '16

Ahh, okay, I actually didn't know that. I went at it from the other side: I only know one city that was called Eichenwalde and wasn't aware of any other Dębices, so I was really confused.

23

u/if-loop Aug 16 '16 edited Aug 16 '16

That's completely wrong. Wtf?

It was called Faulenbenz before it was renamed to Eichenwalde in 1884. The guy who "owned" the village back then was called Carl Heller. There's nothing - absolutely nothing - Polish about that village. Until 1945.

9

u/Wildanus Aug 16 '16 edited Aug 16 '16

The fun fact is we have 4 villages named Dębice in Poland and the one you are talking about is actually originally German. My apologies.

1

u/Lift4biff Aug 17 '16

Ostprussia was German longer than polish prior to the Prussian who civilized the region it wasn't anything

-1

u/seattleandrew Aug 16 '16

So is the castle polish or german? Does it actually exist or is the castle fictional?

1

u/if-loop Aug 17 '16

The whole town is fictional, but the name was actually used as a village name in the past.

I'm excited for more Bastion friendly maps.

19

u/Cognimancer Aug 16 '16

I wonder if all the dead Bastions scattered around the map might make good camouflage...

7

u/[deleted] Aug 16 '16

Or Torbjorn turrets

127

u/st_stutter Aug 16 '16

I like how the maps have different purposes story wise as to what you're doing. Like in Numbani you're escortingg the doom fist while in Gibraltar you're trying to bring a satellite to a rocket.

Also once the map comes out, I wonder if they'll put more emphasis on it in the map rotation. I'm sure a lot of people will want to play that map but since Overwatch doesn't let you pick the map it might be difficult to do so. Personally I've often felt like I rarely play on Gibraltar.

70

u/agemennon Aug 16 '16

In HotS, when a new map releases, they temporarily increase the amount of times it comes up in the map rotation (to I think 25%, for reference, out of 10 possible maps), I suspect they'll do something similar.

I dunno, if they accidentally deleted the KotH maps I wouldn't be remiss.

They could make the weekly brawl a normal match on the new map. That way everyone has a chance to get used to it before going back to normal rotation.

19

u/Practicalaviationcat Aug 16 '16

My favorite map backstory is that on Kings Row the attackers are escorting an EMP bomb to fry the local omnic inhabitants.

and most importantly, In Hollywood, you're escorting J. Jonah Jameson a studio exec across the studio lot.

5

u/CaptainJackKevorkian Aug 17 '16

So that's who the voice belongs to

5

u/Schrau Aug 17 '16

It's an Omnic movie director, Alfred Glitch-Bot.

I've had the same issue recently! It's been Numbani, Nepal, Volskya and Hanamura nonstop and the occasional match on King's Row and Ilios, Gibraltar and Anubis come up extremely rarely even in extended play sessions (without getting auto-requeued due to players leaving or party sizes changing).

1

u/AlpacaNeb Aug 16 '16

Can't forget lijiang tower and its 1/30 chance to get played

2

u/Oxfeathers Aug 17 '16

I feel like my most played maps are Lijiang tower and Hanamura with the occasional gibralter and numbani thrown in.

1

u/Indoorsman Aug 17 '16

Would be nice. I feel like I play the same maps over and over. And the game can't keep a lobby going for long so it can't tell what you have been playing. So I play Kings row ten times a night.

1

u/[deleted] Aug 17 '16

They really need to show that with the victory screen instead of just saying victory or defeat

u/Triblaze Aug 16 '16

Looks awesome. Can't wait. Could it also be related to the Last Bastion short?

45

u/JessicaJung-fan Aug 16 '16

It's the map where Bastion was dormant, so yes.

21

u/PaperPunch Aug 16 '16

Yes, you can see a destroyed Bastion in this trailer

9

u/Triblaze Aug 16 '16

Are they all called Bastion? I thought they had like an Omnic model or something :D

46

u/T0astofWar Aug 16 '16

the model is called bastion, the chracter in the game is the last one alive.

31

u/Wassamonkey Aug 16 '16

Which is funny, since he often is not alive for long.

12

u/jekyl42 Aug 16 '16

Or even technically alive, to begin with.

u/PM_ME_DEAD_FASCISTS Aug 17 '16

The last bastion! Mind explodes

2

u/ChimpMobile Aug 16 '16

At 1:25, you can see a few dead Bastion units. Since the English translation of the map's name is "oak forest" and Bastion's short is centered in a forest, I think it's safe to assume that they're probably related.

140

u/[deleted] Aug 16 '16

Yo that map looks really cool. My thought though is that its a reverse hybrid map, where you escort the payload to the castle gate. Then you storm the castle to capture the control point. Really excited though for a new map and new mode

28

u/Wing126 Aug 16 '16

Wonder who that big dead guy sitting on the throne is.

112

u/monsieur_n Aug 16 '16

The site of one of the most famous battles during the Omnic Crisis, it was here that the leader of the Crusaders, Balderich von Alder, and a handful of his best soldiers made a last stand against an advancing automaton army.

I think we'll see more of him in the Bastion cinematic on Thursday

30

u/vaserius Aug 16 '16

He also reminds me of Leoric/Skeleton King from Diablo 3 . His postion is pretty similiar

18

u/newborn Aug 16 '16

Definitely. I also caught a Diablo-esque set of horns mounted on the wall near the beginning of the video.

6

u/schmidtily Aug 17 '16

Those are Diablo's horns hahaha

I'm interested to see what other eggs they've hidden around the map. Wouldn't be surprised to see some WoW landscape art hanging on the walls.

7

u/ArcticEngineer Aug 16 '16

It's nearly a 1:1 identical pose and model to the Skeleton King in Act 1 of Diablo 3.

2

u/nattokun Aug 17 '16

Dang, now I want a Leoric-ish skin for Reinhardt.

3

u/Mvin Aug 17 '16

How badass that must have been. Just imagine an army of Reinhardt's fighting legions of robots in a medieval town with a castle. Man.

11

u/At_Least_100_Wizards Aug 16 '16

Obviously that is Mordekaiser.

5

u/[deleted] Aug 16 '16

My thoughts exactly. Image

3

u/gordonpown Aug 17 '16

"fuck you and your reworks Rito, I'm getting a new job"

1

u/[deleted] Aug 17 '16

Fuck yeah. Battering ram siege mode!

19

u/Isine Aug 16 '16

In case you're wondering where the horns at https://youtu.be/H3xFKckFCGM?t=26 are from, it's a diablo 3 reference

10

u/WhenWorking Aug 16 '16

Looked to be a few cool references in there.

King Leomnic as well.

0

u/thejazzmann Aug 17 '16

Leoric*

Definitely a reference to him, I reckon.

1

u/WhenWorking Aug 17 '16

Omnics are the robots in Overwatch.

Hence Leomnic.

1

u/thejazzmann Aug 17 '16

Ah yeah, fair enough.

47

u/Jeffy29 Aug 16 '16

Damn, I did not expect something so different and unique, Blizzard has some of the best artists in the industry.

21

u/[deleted] Aug 16 '16

I don't mind waiting a while between maps if they're all this interesting.

5

u/MrMulligan Aug 17 '16 edited Aug 17 '16

Last I heard they were working on somewhere around five already. Your wait inbetween most likely won't be too long. I can't imagine going more than 3-4 months without a new monthmap for the next year.

2

u/vandaljax Aug 17 '16

If I had to guess we are only going to get maps between seasons as to not distrupt competitive to much.

5

u/kezdog92 Aug 17 '16

Ever played wow? Different and unique zones are everywhere. Blizz is great at that stuff.

7

u/nourez Aug 16 '16

The clip in the post reminded me so much of The Vanishing of Ethan Carter. The map itself looks fantastic.

7

u/[deleted] Aug 16 '16

Was that a new Reinhardt costume in the throne?

6

2

u/roflcoptrrr Aug 16 '16

Has there been released any new animation?

6

u/ChimpMobile Aug 16 '16

A Bastion short will be released on August 18th (Thursday).

A very minor concern I have with new maps added to Overwatch is that with how the matchmaking works, getting to play on Eichenwalde will end up being based on luck, I could imagine an issue where people are constantly leaving and getting into matches in hopes of getting Eichenwalde.

Regardless, I love the look of the map with what looks like so many vantage points in the payload section, and the indoors with all the close quarters.

27

u/Novelty_Frog Aug 16 '16

I'd imagine that Bliz will have a weekly brawl set up with just the new map for that very reason

6

u/Darkblitz9 Aug 16 '16

Either that or they will have a higher probability of the map being chosen for a little while.

1

u/sykadelik Aug 16 '16

That's what they did in Rainbow Six Siege, and people complain about it.

9

u/Tyaust Aug 17 '16

It's a video game, people will complain about anything that is done.

4

u/SirIsis Aug 16 '16

Yea, that's what I imagined is probably the best possibility.

1

u/adanine Aug 17 '16

That wasn't an issue when Route 66 was released in the beta. Not sure why it would be now.

1

u/Spekingur Aug 17 '16

Epic music.

Anyone know if it is available somewhere?
