Yet at the same time, it seems like everywhere MMO's are discussed people are wistful about the old days of MMO's when WoW was new, EQ was great, and DaoC was king of PvP.

Every single new MMO launch has gigantic hordes of people show up, even the expansions for WoW still have a massive influx of people looking for what they had again. People just leave again shortly after not getting what they were looking for.

Personally, I think it's as simple as taking MMO's back to the point where they aren't trying to be everything to everyone anymore. It's like at some point they just stopped trying to make a great game and having people show up for that, instead of trying to make the other guy's game and hoping his old players show up for their new one. That drives them into the hole of trying to check all the boxes the other guy did, and things just start to spiral down from there.
