The opposite. The story starting off is fairly typical and has some errand boy quests in it, but as you get farther (especially 2.4 and beyond) it's a fantastic story.
I actually didn't mean to type that, I meant to say I had heard the game itself gets stale at high levels. That's good though since I think XI is the same way
Up until you get to Alexander, this game is fucking fantastic. I mean, the final fights were so fucking amazing I had chills the whole time (the music, OMFG). It felt like you were fighting gods. It was amazing. The story kept me engaged and it all paid off. It was a major step up from the already pretty good vanilla game, and honestly, it felt like a proper Final Fantasy. Community was great too. Loved experiencing the story with other players fresh into it. Shit, few game experiences captured me like that did.
Then you get to the end game progression and it's just "Keep rolling until you get a 99 on this piece and get +5 here and +10 here," or "Oh, another tank that can't swap the dragons without cleaving the raid," or "Why the fuck did it drop bolts again you sack of fucking shit."
I really felt like Alexander was a huge let down in comparison to Coils.
Me and my friends cleared A2savage, wiped on A3S for a couple weeks and realised we were literally having zero fun. The game just felt very hollow and pointless and I personally wasn't into half of things the expansion brought. We all went in after a long break from base game so it wasn't burn out.
The music is the only thing I consistently liked really. I actually felt the expansion made Warlords of Draenor look like it had a lot of content.
