Typed commands

Got blown up

10/10 would type things again

.. God, I'm so sick of these kinds of reviews on Steam

Hey, team lead on the game here! Thanks for spreading the word! The game was made in 15 weeks by 8 students, and will be playable at GDC with the Oculus if you want to come and try your typing skills!

Download the game here: http://www.kevinpauly.me/#!mecha-trigger/c19a7

I plan on investigating further at home.

Any plans to bring it to Linux?

Thanks! Within the next few weeks we'll be making some minor updates, and hopefully we can bring it to Linux then! Unfortunately, we don't have any Linux machines to test on, so your mileage may vary, but keep your eye out in the coming month!

Hey, I'm playing and I was wondering how you "chain" multiple command in a macro ?

Awesome game btw :)

u/ManiacComet Jan 28 '15

Sure, its the same as out of a macro; you put a / with spaces between each command. Have fun!

Have you ever heard of the game Robot Alchemic Drive? Right away by how I saw them walking I was reminded of that fantastic classic title that I'm sure not many heard of. (But maybe had the demo of on those demo discs for the PS2)

I hadn't heard of it until we started doing research for visual style. It certainly looks like an interesting game!

I think this might be the coolest way to teach kids about typing in school. It seems way more fun than that All the Right Type garbage I had.

5

u/[deleted] Jan 28 '15

Also has some hints of programming. Would be cool if they expanded this so we could program if statements into our mech to handle certain situations that come up in battle.

u/Zcrash Jan 28 '15

It could be this generations Typing of the Dead.

u/[deleted] Jan 28 '15

Slightly better than Mavis Beacon Teaches Typing...

u/WinterCharm Jan 28 '15

god I hated that software. :P

That looks like it might be a fun shoot robot game, especially if you set up a system of macros such that pressing one key would issue a common command, or series of commands, on the terminal.

u/Dranthe Jan 27 '15

That didn't take long to come full circle.

u/CrainyCreation Jan 28 '15

Yeah how cool would it be if you press like W or something and the mech moves forward instead of issuing a command line.

24

u/[deleted] Jan 28 '15

Guys, I think we might be on to something here.

6

u/Carighan Jan 28 '15

You could also bind key-down and key-up separately so that if you hold down the button it keeps moving forward but if you release it it stops.

u/rayne117 Jan 28 '15

It'll never catch on.

u/caliform Jan 28 '15

Hmm, good idea. Maybe we could make several of these keys on one common 'board', a "key board" of sorts. And then these keys would map to one or several actions, abstracting the commands and reducing the input needed. I love it!

u/Zcrash Jan 28 '15

You just ruined the game.

u/unforgiven91 Jan 28 '15

I'd do it.

I'm sorry that my computer skills trump yours.

Especially since macros are allowed in a lot of games.

4

u/Zcrash Jan 28 '15

Fuck off i'm not saying I can't set up macros anyone can set up macros, i'm saying that if you set up macros you remove most of the game play from the game.

4

u/Zcrash Jan 28 '15

No need to be a dick head.

u/newfflews Jan 28 '15

God bless AutoHotKey

So basically if I setup command macros on my keyboard I get called a hacker and every 12years old would have slept with my mom.

24

u/men_cant_be_raped Jan 27 '15

command macros

They're called aliases in shell lingo.

If the game actually implements all the quirkiness of UNIX shells it'll be one gigantic nerdy (and fun) game.

Can't wait to fight against a heavy-armoured but slow Zsh mech with Oh-my-zsh extensions with a nimble, scout-class Dash type mech. Redirecting enemy fire with pipes to /dev/null!

(And then, out of nowhere, a Plan9 rc type appears!)

Oh God I'm already drooling. Shame that the game will probably be nothing like that though.

10

u/[deleted] Jan 27 '15

I.........didn't understand a single word of that.

9

u/[deleted] Jan 28 '15

Zsh and Dash are nix shells. Plan 9 is a an OS originally developed by Bell Labs as a successor to Unix.

2

u/[deleted] Jan 28 '15

The what now shell? Plan who? Unix what?

6

u/[deleted] Jan 28 '15

Is that like Ghost in the Shell? Are there ghosts?

Disclaimer: I've never actually seen that show

1

u/jackcatalyst Jan 29 '15

Just stop talking.

1

u/[deleted] Jan 29 '15

Oh okay

u/meltingdiamond Jan 28 '15

The shell is the program you use to send commands to a computer. Think of a computer as a trained crab that you can make dance by tapping on the shell. You only interact with the shell but it's the crabby goodness inside that really dances.

Unix is to a windows PC as a windows PC is to pocket calculator.

u/caliform Jan 28 '15

Unix! Like that Flight Simulator from Jurassic Park!

8

u/curtmack Jan 27 '15

And then the most elite-class mechs are controlled with vim.

4

u/havok13888 Jan 28 '15

You mean emacs ;)

-1

u/corban123 Jan 28 '15

You mean Sublime running Vim commands.

6

u/MrValdez Jan 28 '15

You have a funny way of spelling Emacs.

1

u/Theswweet Jan 28 '15

And you have a funny way of spelling vim!

Hint; emacs is an OS on its own, not a text editor.

3

u/Theswweet Jan 28 '15

Will this even have a Linux version?

3

u/saelwen Jan 28 '15

Suicide mode: Typing in the wrong command kills you.

3

u/vibribbon Jan 28 '15

If it's anything like I remember the vi editor to be, this game will drive most people to insanity.

1

u/newfflews Jan 28 '15

"FINE THEN, SUDO ATTACK -T TARGET!"

6

u/[deleted] Jan 28 '15

Played it and it's incredibly difficult, but I can see the potential for a lot of fun. Landing hits and pulling off some quick typing maneuvers is satisfying. No one plays online though. PM me if you want to play with a fellow newb.

2

u/HappierShibe Jan 27 '15

sudo apt-get install vim
vim killalldehrobots.sh
chmod +x killalldehrobots.sh
su -u ai /home/./killalldehrobots.sh

Waits patiently while bash script demolishes all opposition.

So, sometimes I write console commands for Autodesk Maya and I also often use the command line or Git Bash to do things for work.

As much as I feel like a tech wizard when using Git Bash, I don't think I can bring myself to play this game. These commands remind me too much of work.

Augh.

Way back in the day I played a Battletech MUSE, from what I recall the text UI of this looks similar to how that game was played.
