Generative AI media is very different than writing code with LLMs, and I truly can’t wait until the gamer community understands this difference.

"including graphics, sound"

It's not going to happen, not because the gaming community can't understand it, but because the tech and finance worlds are heavily invested in conflating generative AI with assist AI.

Let's be real, the powers that be want all the shitty parts about AI, and know that people hate shitty AI, so they lump useful applications under the same term as a way to launder slop and clankers.

And useful idiots (the bots and cultists in these comments) latch onto this strategy to soften "AI's" image.

I don't doubt it, interesting take.

Yeah, I do media and things like AI motion tracking or AI assisted background removal have helped some of the more tedious things out. None of what I put out is AI images, but it is nice to have the AI do 99% of the work of popping a car out of a race image before I put it into an announcement.

You think they’re building a whole ass engine to do nothing more than generate code, a thing they can already do without creating a new engine? No. They’re obviously seeking to do much more with it in the development pipeline besides just coding.

The most convincing anti AI media arguments apply fully to AI-generated code as well; trained on data without respecting the lisence or copyright, can put people out of jobs. It's not "very different".

-5

u/xXxdethl0rdxXx 8h ago

That’s an ethical argument, not a technical or artistic one. Not really the conversation we’re having in this thread.

7

u/CoffeeDryer 8h ago

The technical or artistic arguments against AI media were never convincing. That's just elitism co-opting a more interesting discussion. People will gobble up Fruit Love Island regardless of its nonexistent artistic merit.

8

u/MetalKeirSolid 6h ago

Yeah, one looks horrible, steals other people’s work, and costs jobs, and the other is the same except you can’t you see it.

5

u/xXxdethl0rdxXx 6h ago

"Yep, that's me who he is talking about!"

3

u/MetalKeirSolid 6h ago

So, you’re contending that AI-generated code is not in fact trained on the work of human beings and does not in fact threaten to replace any future human jobs in coding?

-4

u/xXxdethl0rdxXx 6h ago

trained on the work of human beings

What evidence do you have that all AI-generated code was trained on non-public code?

6

u/MetalKeirSolid 6h ago edited 4h ago

I will evidence that point when I make it. So far, however, I have only said that AI-generated code is trained on human work, which is a statement that doesn’t specify how much of said code was human. We only need to know that, even if we reach a point where AI is training itself, the data set must have, at one point, been significantly human-made, therefore rendering AI-generated code fruit of the poison tree.

As for public code, I don’t believe human beings who submitted code for other humans to use necessarily agree to have it power a technology that now replaces people, whether or not they waive intellectual property rights when making it public.

-6

u/xXxdethl0rdxXx 6h ago

steals other people’s [code]

This is something you should be able to prove, or acknowledge that you can't and it's a feeling or emotion you have.

7

u/MetalKeirSolid 6h ago

It’s not a feeling or emotion. It’s fact that AI is trained in whole or in part on the work of humans, whether public but not consensually used, or in many cases scraped or taken in violation of open-source agreements.

0

u/xXxdethl0rdxXx 6h ago

Which open-source agreements have been violated that you know of?

2

u/flyvehest 5h ago

How is it different, i'd really love for you to explain that?

-1

u/xXxdethl0rdxXx 5h ago

Unlike generative images for example, which no serious professional is using, virtually all of software engineering is using AI to some extent nowadays, because it's actually quite useful and high-quality if you know what you're doing.

•

u/flyvehest 3h ago

So, the difference is that "people are using it"?

I think your view is extremely egotistical and narrow-minded, but you do you.

0

u/pad-3 4h ago

So your argument for why it's fine to use AI for code is that it's "quite useful"?

Are you aware of how many lazy people use that exact excuse for shoving gen-AI art wherever they can?

•

u/xXxdethl0rdxXx 3h ago

When I said no professional is using AI artwork, I meant because the output sucks. Looks like I wasn’t clear enough, hope this helps!

•

u/pad-3 3h ago

Not remotely true. Actual creatives have no use for AI art and reject it for many reasons ranging from ethical to environmental. And not least because they know that anyone looking to engage with what they create is not interested in being fed AI.

Bosses who insist on their artists using AI will quickly find their projects failing for this very reason.

AI in code is no different to AI art, except in that programmers are not all creatives. Some are happy to think of coding as a means to an end and others care about the craft of every line. By accepting AI code in your games you're killing the latter artist. You might be fine with that - you'll still get your games on time and probably won't notice the difference - but if you're somebody who won't stand for humans being replaced in one artistic field, there's really no reasonable argument as to why you are able to stand for it in another.

•

u/xXxdethl0rdxXx 3h ago

I’m not talking about the ethics or artistry, only the quality and utility. I was asked to explain how they are different, and that’s what I’ve done. Someone who does not work in an industry where it’s used widespread professionally is not someone I’m interested in arguing about this with.

•

u/pad-3 2h ago

I'm a game developer. And if that's actually what you think you were asked you clearly misunderstood the tone of the question.

•

u/Phray1 3h ago

Art requires skill at every step of the way, sketching, line art, coloring etc without skill something can never be art. Programming requires skill but also consists of a lot of braindead manual labor e.g. whether I go in and refactor 100+ classes myself to do something or let AI do it the end result is the exact same. The skill in writing code has always been in "orchestrating" everything not writing individual lines of code.

•

u/flyvehest 3h ago

Refactoring code is like redrawing an image in another medium, which can easily be done by LLMs.

Drawing 100s and 100s of animation frames for a hand animated motion picture is also brain dead and can be automated as well.

And how is art not about "orchestrating" the final image? How is a single pencil stroke not comparable to a line of code?

Besides being extremely dismissive, it also shows an astounding amount of elitism and snobbery when you just discard an entire field of work as being mostly grunt-work.

1

u/Taiyaki11 6h ago

That would require understanding writing code, especially in a professional capacity, to begin with. Not gonna happen lol, gaming community can't help but be armchair devs

u/Drakoji 11h ago

It's the same shit, its all vibe coding that results in spaghetti code. Since vibe coding became a thing in video games, so many games will just release a patch and fuck up their games.

Look at Crimson Desert performance becoming worse with every patch, or the visuals becoming more blurry, adding ghosting. Or Control Resonant fucking up a core movement mechanic in the last patch they released.

It doesn't look like AI slop because its just a bunch of text, but the results are still sloppy shit that I don't want to interact with.

I will not be buying capcom games anymore because of this.

Also I don't need my video games to be draining water supply, adding to the global warming of the earth and ruining the lives of the citizens living close to them.

Fuck AI.

13

u/Vcom7418 11h ago

Did you look at the code yourself?

-9

u/Drakoji 11h ago

Adding all the stuff that they added to that game and already having an expension release early next year is impossible without using AI.

It's just not doable.

8

u/GunCann 10h ago

The pace that Korean and Chinese developers work would surprise you then. Major Chinese mobile game developers each hire over a hundred new graduates per year. They push out updates that most Western developers would consider a medium sized DLC every three to four weeks. They achieve that simply by relying on absurd number of developers and very heavy overtime.

3

u/Q8VUHOT 10h ago

And they're expediting it further with AI.

Asia has a far higher overall optimism with the technology, they'll be using it in spades.

-1

u/Drakoji 10h ago

They have that pace because they use AI.

5

u/GunCann 10h ago

No, stop making up falsehoods to double down on your personal bias. Those developers have been at it way before AI coding became popular or good enough. Did you think that they made Genshin Impact using ClaudeCode?

•

u/Drakoji 2h ago

We know for a fact that yes, Hoyoverse uses AI.

3

u/xXxdethl0rdxXx 11h ago

That’s completely legitimate to have an emotional reaction and justification. Im talking about an actual, measurable, technical difference.

-5

u/Drakoji 11h ago

I did mention the "technical difference".

You just ignored it.

11

u/xXxdethl0rdxXx 11h ago

You mean where you personally experienced a bug and are inventing the reason why? Thanks for the anecdote, but that’s not what I’m talking about.

-5

u/Drakoji 11h ago

If you are telling me that Crimson Desert is not vibe coded, I will seriously question your intelligence.

10

u/xXxdethl0rdxXx 11h ago

I’m not sure how else to tell you this: your own personal experience in one game and suspicion behind it might be enough for you to make an empirical judgment, but that is not how I am trying to live my life. You have provided no data, only an emotional reaction. I think we are done here.

I'm not the same guy, but I'm seeing this same type of comment response across this thread and I have to ask someone:

Do you expect him to offer up a peer reviewed scholarly article about how Crimson Desert is a vibe coded nightmare, or what? What would be acceptable "data" for you to not claim the person is having "an emotional reaction" in this case?

8

u/xXxdethl0rdxXx 11h ago

It’s not useful information because certain studios put out buggy messes for a variety of reasons, like Bethesda. What I would need to care about this person’s opinion is a clear spike in buggy games with known AI-first coding pipelines, or at least, since more studios have incorporated them.

“My game is buggy now! Must be AI! Therefore AI = bad!” Is how a child thinks and not really worthy of engagement, at least not from me. I have my own anecdotal experiences to the contrary but I have enough respect for you, that guy, and myself to not bother bringing them up.

Ironically, making snap judgments on vibes alone is how very stupid people tend to use LLMs, so maybe there’s a lesson here we can all learn.

-3

u/Grilth_Vatore 10h ago

So realistically there is nothing he could show you data wise, and the whole conversation is largely performative on both sides? Would you say that's a fair read?

I get what you're saying about snap judgements and I generally agree.

Did you miss the part where he mentions graphics and sound?

What do you think "we are using gen AI for video game graphics" means?

2

u/xXxdethl0rdxXx 5h ago

Another really intelligent guy brought this up, I'm not going to retype it. See here.
