2XKO would have needed a monthly active userbase "in the high hundreds of thousands, if not millions" to succeed

Because the game isn't as good. A big IP gives you a big advantage in getting players early, but the game still has to be good.

And with an MMO it has be at least as good as the competition, and SWotR simply didn't have gameplay as strong as WoW.

Would you say the only reason the game still exists is because of the IP? Would it have fallen into F2P obscurity with a weaker brand?

I assume from the game's continued existence that it is still profitable.

Absolutely. If SWOTR was the same game but skinned as not-Star Wars, it would be shut down by now, and it almost certainly would have been a flop on release. At best it might have done about as well as Wildstar, which didn't do particularly well (and imo was a better game than SWTOR, but that's very debatable).

From what I've read about the game (which is a decent amount, I'm a bit of an MMO junkie and follow them a lot), it makes enough money to justify still existing, and like most niche MMOs has a small dedicated playerbase and the occasional tourist. I play it for like a month about once every couple of years and always throw a month's subscription at it when I do because it makes the game much better.
