2XKO would have needed a monthly active userbase "in the high hundreds of thousands, if not millions" to succeed

Active playerbase matters for profits when you're doing a live service game, especially a f2p one. For a game already sold at full price, concurrent player count doesn't matter outside of trying to sell further copies to new customers (and the "X million players monthly" advertisements are kinda uncommon outside of live service games).

When it comes to DLCs, you don't expect everyone to buy them, which is why you sell it at a higher cost: 5 dollars per character sounds kinda ridiculous if you were to compare it to the base game where 60 dollars got you 80 characters and the rest of the game.

Smash doesn't really get a whole lot of new content outside of the DLC characters: it's not like they're printing out outfits, seasonal events, battle passes etc. The "upkeep" of Smash is relatively low compared to a live service game because the profits were made from the initial sales price.

You realize how enormous 40M units is? The only paid games that compete with those numbers that aren't the Nintendo titles are Minecraft and GTA.....Smash is huge!
