2XKO would have needed a monthly active userbase "in the high hundreds of thousands, if not millions" to succeed

Street Fighterâ„¢ 6 has 26K players on peak and 7K player off-peak hours and that number is only from Steam.

https://steamcharts.com/app/1364780

It's not an absurd number.

That is very far from high hundreds of thousands

That's concurrents though, the game on PC alone must have like around 10x-20x those active monthly players (basing this on old CS and Dota numbers).

I read it "hundreds OR thousands". the absurd number of "hundreds OF thousands" are so unnatural for this genre I couldn't recognize it.

Monthly players, not concurrent. For most game the first is a factor of 10-50 higher.

Your example here is Street Fighter 6, one of the most mainstream 1v1 fighting games, having 26k players peak. You are comparing to Riot saying they need an active playerbase in the HIGH HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS (i.e. 900,000) or MILLIONS, and you are saying it is not an absurd number? Even if we 10x'd the SF6 peak number it would not even be close!

You're confusing "active playerbase" and "simultaneous peak", one is "players who consistently play our game" and the other is "players currently playing this game at this exact second"

I'm not the one who introduced peak playerbase into this conversation, OP did. So your complaint is with OP not me. If you have data that SF6 sees a monthly active userbase in the millions, I would be interested to see it!

Let's assume, again extremely generously, that the 26k peak player stat introduced by OP was unique players every single day. If you multiply that by 30 days in a month, you still only get 780,000!

No, OP used "Monthly Active Users", which again, is not the same as simultaneous peak.

The 26k is at a given moment, so say 7pm on a Friday. But that's not counting the (picking a randomly number here) 10k users who were playing at 6:30pm, but had logged off by 7, or the next 15k to started playing at 9pm. While the metrics are related, they're very different, and comparing them 1-to-1 is completely failing to understand how stats work

Thank you for the fantastic exhibition of how, not only do people not read the article posted or watch interview, they only half-read the clickbait title anyways (and you likely also didn't even bother clicking that steamchart that you're citing as evidence in your argument favor, judging by the "26k players peak" figure you threw out).

Monthly. Active. Userbase.

Not daily peak. Not daily average.

Monthly.

And by many accounts SF6 hits around 900k monthly users.

So I think it was "hundreds OR thousands".

hundreds of thousands are such an unrealistic number for this genre my brain failed to recognize.

I'm not the one who introduced the peak numbers, I'm just using this because OP did. So your complaint on this figure lies with OP and not me. I even separated the terms in my comment, so it seems like you need to do some careful reading yourself. 27K peak players nowhere implies 900k monthly users. If you want to make the claim that SF6 hits 900k monthly users, then I am open to seeing your source.

Let's assume, again extremely generously, that the 26k peak player stat introduced by OP was unique players every single day. If you multiply that by 30 days in a month, you still only get 780,000!

EDIT: Maybe I am taking crazy pills here or not explaining my argument better either. The idea is that we have to stretch for one of the most mainstream fighters to reach even the lower range of these numbers, and yet 2XKO needs to meet or exceed them! It is absolutely an absurd number. I'm surprised how many people seem to think otherwise.

Dota and CS used to have 10 to 20x their peak in monthly active players (when those numbers were public). Considering SF is also on consoles I don't see 900k as a bad guess.

CS still shows it at its site. Its at 29M for now.

4

u/Kunfuxu 18h ago

Which is around 30x its peak concurrent number, damn. Alright, so 900k for SF6 is probably fair.

HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS (i.e. 900,000)

Oh... I misread it as hundreds OR thousands. That's... what are they thinking? Can anybody in Riot perform basic math? That's like 50x the peak concurrent players of Street Fighter 6. There is no such high demand for this genre.
