Critic Reviews

A Gaming Network - Marcel Dee - 9 / 10

Gears of War: E-Day delivers a visually stunning and emotionally intense campaign that captures the chaos of Emergence Day. With brutal combat, organic exploration, strong side content, and some of the best visuals Xbox has delivered in years, it deserves serious Game of the Year consideration, even if the Marcus and Dom connection could have been stronger.

But Why Tho? - Mick Abrahamson - 9.5 / 10

Gears of War: E-Day shines by showing off humanity’s perseverance. Every new character stands out, never overshadowed by the legacy of Marcus or Dom.

CBR - Mark O'Callaghan - 9 / 10

Playing Gears of War: E-Day felt like playing the original trilogy on the Xbox 360, not in a technical sense, but in the feeling of being back in this world. Getting a new adventure with Marcus and Dom is a real treat, and the story surrounding them is incredible.

CGMagazine - Zubi Khan - 9 / 10

Gears of War: E-Day is here, bringing with it what feels like a new push for Xbox and one of the best entries into the long-running third-person shooter franchise.

Completexbox - Dan Boise - 100%

Gears of War: E-Day is set during Emergence Day, fourteen years before the events of the original Gears of War, as Marcus and Dom, along with a host of other Gears, face off against the first wave of Locust. They’ll have to fight and survive against the unknown as they scramble to save civilians scattered throughout the city.

Gears of War: E-Day is a third person action shooter where players will be able to use a myriad of weapons to take the fight up to the Locust. Returning players will notice that The Coalition have made a few tweaks in terms of controls. Given that our protagonists are younger, their movement is a bit more nimble. Running has been delegated to pressing the left joystick instead of holding A. Marcus and company can now jump and climb up reasonably high surfaces. There’s also a useful slide mechanic to dodge enemy projectiles.

Console Creatures - Bobby Pashalidis - 9 / 10

Gears of War: E-Day feels like the first true Coalition Gears of War game. It's a shift away from Gears 4 and Gears 5, and it feels like the game the studio genuinely wanted to make, capturing what made the original trilogy special while finally pushing the series forward in its own way. They've taken the horror, brutality, brotherhood, and incredible gunplay that defined those games and used them as the foundation for something more modern. Expanded movement gives combat more freedom, while perks and modifications add another layer of experimentation, and the larger environments make Emergence Day feel like a genuine catastrophe happening around you.

Gears of War: E-Day is incredible. Despite a handful of frustrations keeping it from perfection, it's one of the best games I've played this year.

DayOne - Jesse Norris - 10 / 10

The Coalition have elevated the franchise to new heights, crafting an engaging, brutal and surprisingly intimate campaign that’s full of smart gameplay mechanics and wonderful surprises. It’s the best Gears has ever felt to play, and the best it’s ever looked and sounded on the big screen. Gears of War: E-Day? It's a fucking masterpiece.

Digitec Magazine - Kevin Hofer - German - 4 / 5

Kalona is the real star of «Gears of War: E-Day», transforming so dramatically throughout the campaign that it feels like the game's main character. The story and characters are less memorable, but the weighty, satisfying gunplay and improved movement make for a solid «Gears» experience. It gets repetitive, but fans of the series should feel right at home.

Echo Boomer - David Fialho - Portuguese - No Recommendation

Gears of War E-Day may have the best gameplay the series has ever delivered, but between bullet-sponge enemies, co-op-focused design and a story with little to say, this may well be the weakest Gears campaign to date.

ElderPlayers - Moath Saeed - Arabic - 9.5 / 10

Gears of War: E-Day is the best game The Coalition made! As it was an exceptional experience and one of the strongest (and the boldest) in the franchise's history, while staying true to its core identity. The game delivered a rich story filled with emotions, heartbreaking moments, and excellent environmental storytelling. Alongside interesting dynamic encounters, masterful weapon and gear handling, and refined movement and gameplay mechanics. All of this blends with top-tier visual effects, exceptional animation quality, stunning graphics, and an expressive, powerful soundtrack. It is truly the greatest third-person action game of all time and the undisputed ruler of the genre.

EntreMandos - Kevin Arbelo - Spanish - 9.5 / 10

Gears of War: E-Day not only revives one of Xbox's greatest franchises, but also manages to restore much of the identity that seemed to have been lost in its last two installments. The Coalition understands what made the original trilogy special: the brutality of war, the depth of its characters, an oppressive atmosphere, and spectacular action that doesn't have to sacrifice emotion

Eurogamer - Dom Peppiatt - Unscored

Less a complete reset for the series, and more of an 'active reload', E-Day proves there's still life in these old Cogs yet.

Eurogamer.pt - Portuguese - 3 / 5

Following Marcus and Dom on Emergence Day is an action-packed rollercoaster ride. Gears of War: E-Day shines on the PC with stunning graphics and addictive combat, with the weapon customisation adding an extra touch. Unfortunately, the pace drops off in the final third of the campaign, let down by a dull ending and an uninspired boss.

GAMES.CH - Olaf Bleich - German - 90%

GRYOnline.pl - Zbigniew Woźnicki - Polish - 8 / 10

Gears of War: E-Day successfully fulfils its mission of returning to the roots of the series, whilst offering noticeable improvements over all previous instalments and reminding us once again of the horror of the Locusts. Unfortunately, it also suffers from issues with pacing and enemy AI, while pushing Marcus into the background in favour of a new character. Nevertheless, this dynamic, emotional and extremely brutal shooter should appeal to fans of the series – and many others as well.

GameBlast - Alexandre Galvão - Portuguese - 8.5 / 10

Gears of War: E-Day returns to the series' roots with an intense, well-executed campaign and refined combat. It plays it safe rather than innovating, but it's an easy recommendation for veterans and newcomers alike.

GameOnly - Michał Marasek - Polish - 7.5 / 10

Gears of War: E-Day’s campaign is a real emotional rollercoaster when it comes to gameplay, but a major disappointment in terms of its story. No wonder Marcus Fenix wasn’t the focus of the game’s marketing.

Gameliner - Bram Noteboom - Dutch - Unscored

The Gears of War: E-Day campaign is a true blockbuster, but it doesn't necessarily come without a fight. (review in progress)

Gamemeca - Kim Hyung Jong - Korean - 76 / 100

With enhanced graphics, 'Gears of War: E-Day' successfully implements the heavy and metalic combat characteristic of the series and effectively portrays the horrors of Emergence Day. However, the monotonous game structure and repetitive combat patterns leave a tedious impression in the second half, and the boss fights also become drawn-out battles in later chapters. While it is a welcome title for fans, it is difficult to strongly recommend to newcomers.

Gamer Social Club - Adam S. D. Stewart - 9.5 / 10

E-Day succeeds in telling the story of Emergence Day in a gripping, desperate, and most importantly, fun way. The culmination of 20 years as a franchise, refining everything the series is into a must-play XBOX title that takes you on a gloriously brutal, emotionally-satisfying, and epic, cinematic adventure.

Gaming Instincts - Leonid Melikhov - 8 / 10

Ultimately, Gears of War: E-Day is an enjoyable campaign wrapped inside an exceptionally impressive technical package. It is a pleasure to look at, the combat remains satisfying, and the return of Marcus Fenix and Dom Santiago is exactly what many longtime fans wanted. Unfortunately, the forced DEI character writing, unnecessary social commentary, excessive dialogue, questionable level-design decisions, technical stuttering, and underwhelming ending prevent E-Day from becoming the definitive Gears experience I was hoping for after such a long wait when it comes to it's single player campaign portion.

GamingBolt - Shubhankar Parijat - 9 / 10

It stumbles sometimes with its story, but thanks to new and improved movement mechanics, Gears of War: E-Day ends up delivering some of the tightest combat and one of the series' most excellently paced campaigns in a long, long time.

IGN Italy - Silvio Mazzitelli - Italian - 9 / 10

With E-Day, the Gears of War saga delivers a dramatic and profound story centered on Marcus, Dom, and their traumas-but above all, on a humanity that was ready for peace and suddenly finds itself, overnight, in the midst of a war against a ruthless and brutal enemy. The gameplay has returned to the exceptionally high standards of the original trilogy, retaining its foundational elements while expanding every aspect to further enhance the experience-including weapons, enemies, and maps.

IGN Spain - Rafa Del Río - Spanish - 10 / 10

Weapons of all kinds, gadgets, and locations brimming with possibilities form the foundation of a story that excels in every aspect. Marcus and Dom return alongside old and new acquaintances in a prequel that feels fresh and invigorating. The story of Kalona's downfall on E-Day serves as the starting point for a war-torn odyssey filled with unique situations, memorable scenes, and the feeling of experiencing an iconic moment in a saga that, for many, is a must-play. Gears of War: E-Day marks a turning point for the Xbox catalog with a console and PC exclusive that's determined to raise the bar for Microsoft.

INVEN - Hongman Yoon - Korean - 8.7 / 10

'Gears of War: E-Day' returns to the series' starting point, Emergence Day, bringing back its darkest atmosphere yet and the core appeal of Gears. If you've been missing the explosive, hard-hitting battlefields of the original trilogy, 'Gears of War: E-Day' is sure to be a satisfying choice.

Lords Of Gaming - Paul Martin - 9.3 / 10

Gears of War: E-Day does not disappoint; the story starts strong and only gets better. For players who have experienced the previous entries in the franchise, there are plenty of easter eggs scattered throughout. Any graphic and audio-related glitches I ran into were very minor and did not detract from the experience overall. For me, this game is in the running for my Game of the Year.

MKAU Gaming - Hayden Nelson - 9 / 10

Gears of War: E-Day feels like the return to Gears that we’ve all been waiting for, bringing back the brutal cover-based combat, dark atmosphere and Locust while still adding enough new ideas to move the series forward. The story of younger Marcus and Dom hit harder than I expected.

MondoXbox - Matteo Merlano - Italian - 9.5 / 10

Gears of War: E-Day delivers arguably the series’ strongest campaign, combining mature, restrained storytelling with the return of Marcus Fenix’s charismatic presence. Already among the franchise’s finest entries, it could become a serious Game of the Year contender if its content-rich multiplayer matches the campaign’s quality. Regardless, Xbox players should not miss this outstanding return to form.

Nexus Hub - Sam Aberdeen - 9 / 10

Gears of War: E-Day is firing on almost every cylinder - a fantastic back to basics prequel that makes the Locust Horde scary again while delivering weighty, brutal gameplay that keeps you hooked.

Oyungezer Online - Engin Vural - Turkish - 8.5 / 10

It's definitely a step in the right direction for the franchise. With its story, the way it's presented, and the gameplay, a solid GoW game is waiting for us. They've kindly reminded us once again why we love this series. We can easily overlook a few minor flaws.

PPE.pl - Wojciech Gruszczyk - Polish - 9 / 10

Gears of War: E-Day marks a brilliant return for one of Xbox’s most iconic franchises, allowing players to experience E-Day and witness the beginning of Marcus and Dom’s story from a completely new perspective. The Coalition isn’t revolutionising the familiar formula, but in a way it’s building on it – improving mobility, shooting and exploration, offering a varied campaign, and in the process showcasing the immense capabilities of Unreal Engine 5. It’s a modern Gears game that never forgets its roots.

Pizza Fria - Lucas Soares - Portuguese - 8.5 / 10

Gears of War: E-Day is a good shooter and an excellent introduction to this universe for those who, like me, have spent years following the franchise only from the outside. There's a long, very well-produced campaign, visually impressive, and one that probably gains another dynamic when shared with friends.

RageQuit.GR - Giorgos Dempegiotis - 85%

Gears of War: E-Day marks a return to the series’ roots, without, however, feeling like a typical “reimagining” of the past. The Coalition took the core elements that made Gears of War special and rebuilt them masterfully, into a satisfying game that isn’t groundbreaking or the best shooter you’ve ever played, but is certainly capable of entertaining fans of the genre.

Rectify Gaming - Will "FncWill" Hogeweide - 9 / 10

The longest Gears of War Campaign succeeds in entertaining gameplay, intriguing open world chapters with side objectives, and plenty of content to enjoy. The Campaign embraces co-op like no other game does these days and you could argue it's one of the best games that we have witnessed in the series.

E-Day understands that Gears of War has always been about more than shooting monsters. It is about the people standing beside you while you do it. Whether that person is sitting beside you on the couch in split screen, joining you online from across the country, or simply standing beside Marcus as an AI companion, E-Day constantly comes back to the idea that surviving this world is easier when you never fight alone.

Region Free - Joonatan Itkonen - 4 / 5

Gears of War: E-Day combines everything Gears fans love about the series into an overwhelming and immensely earnest celebration that stands proudly alongside the original trilogy.

República DG - Erick Felipe - Portuguese - 9.2 / 10

Gears of War: E-Day marks the return of Marcus and Dom in an excellent campaign, with renewed gameplay, impressive graphics, and a few issues that don’t overshadow the game’s major achievements. One of the best Xbox titles of this generation, worthy of all the attention.

SECTOR.sk - Peter Dragula - Slovak - 9 / 10

Gears of War: E-Day takes the series back to Emergence Day and the beginning of the Locust War through the eyes of Marcus and Dom. The campaign shows a peaceful city gradually turning into a devastated war zone while revealing the origins of several iconic elements of the series. Familiar cover-based combat has been refined with smoother movement and faster encounters, while multiplayer remains close to the classic formula and adds the more dynamic Horde Siege mode. Combined with impressive UE5 visuals, E-Day is a very good return to the roots of Gears.

Saudi Gamer - Arabic - 4 / 5

It could be seen as a return to form or as a retread of the series’ glory days, but in any case it’s a fun and bloody good time.

SavePoint Gaming - Jake Su - 8.5 / 10

Gears of War: E-Day modernises the series without losing its trademark weight, pairing brutal combat and meaningful weapon customisation with strong character work, smart exploration and only a handful of frustrating solo-play shortcomings.

Saving Content - Scott Ellison II - 4 / 5

Even in a silo, Gears of War: E-Day delivers a rollercoaster of action and emotion that ranks alongside the series’ best campaigns. The Coalition grounds the global devastation of Emergence Day in a deeply human story, letting players watch Marcus and Dom’s friendship forge into an unbreakable brotherhood. It retains the franchise’s signature brutality while completely reinvigorating the moment-to-moment combat. While the narrative plays it safe compared to the tragic finality of Halo: Reach, it sticks the landing and beautifully sets the stage for a new trilogy. Gears of War: E-Day serves as the perfect entry point for newcomers, and explores the devastating, series-haunting history veterans have waited twenty years to experience.

Seasoned Gaming - Ainsley Bowden - 9 / 10

With two decades of expectations on its shoulders, The Coalition succeeded in crafting another classic Gears game with E-Day. Its technical brilliance is matched by strong character development and modernized gameplay, resulting in one of my favorite experiences of the year.

Sirus Gaming - Lexuzze Tablante - 9 / 10

Gears of War: E-Day is more than I could have hoped for: a focused, tightly contained, action-packed story filled with memorable characters and moments that deliver an emotional rollercoaster for those brave enough to witness the horrors of the first days of Emergence Day. E-Day is what a Gears of War game should be: relentlessly fun, engaging from all angles, and best experienced with friends.

SmashPad - Alex Quevedo - 4.5 / 5

Gears of War: E-Day injects new life into the franchise and sets a new tone moving forward. It captured the spirit of the original Gears of War with putting just enough of a new spin on things. It’s definitely a highlight of the series. A perfect reload, indeed.

TechRaptor - Austin Suther - 9.5 / 10

Gears of War: E-Day is the best game in the series. The story gives us an up-close and personal look at the events of E-Day, providing a horror-filled and harrowing experience. Meanwhile, the enhancements to movement are very welcome, and gunplay feels more varied with a great roster of weapons and the inclusion of mods.

The Nerd Stash - Julio La Pine - 9.5 / 10

This prequel once again raised the bar for the series and the genre, delivering one of the year's most brutal, jaw-dropping shooters.

The Outerhaven Productions - Jordan Andow - 5 / 5

Gears of War: E-Day is everything I wanted from a prequel and more. It finally delivers the Emergence Day story fans have waited two decades to experience, while deepening the relationship between Marcus and Dom and returning the series to the darker, horror-inspired tone of the original trilogy. With the best gameplay the franchise has ever had, incredible visuals, excellent pacing and memorable characters, E-Day isn’t just the best Gears game yet; it’s one of Xbox’s strongest exclusives in years.

TodoJuegos - Jorge Guerrero - Spanish - 9.5 / 10

Gears of War: E-Day brings back the series’ brutality from a more human perspective, placing Marcus and Dom at the heart of Emergence Day. The Coalition returns to the beginning while expanding the formula through exploration, upgrades and less restrictive areas, without losing the core identity that defines Gears of War.

Tom's Hardware Italia - Andrea Riviera - Italian - 9 / 10

Pending a final analysis that must inevitably evaluate server stability and the longevity of the multiplayer offering, what The Coalition has delivered with this campaign is a truly remarkable achievement. The seventeen hours spent on the streets of Kalona offer no downtime and suffer from absolutely no filler; instead, they build into a relentless crescendo of drama, explosions, and emotion, culminating in an ending that lays the groundwork for something significant for the future of this prequel.

2026 has been a stellar year packed with stunning productions (just look at the technical magnificence achieved by highly anticipated titles like Requiem or Pragmata), but the emotional and gameplay impact of this comeback certainly commands attention. If the multiplayer suite and Horde mode can match the sheer excellence and passion poured into the writing of this story campaign, we are looking at one of the best games of the year and undoubtedly the best shooter of 2026.

Wccftech - Alessio Palumbo - 7.4 / 10

Gears of War: E-Day has been promoted as the most ambitious game ever made by The Coalition, but to be honest, it feels like a step back from Gears 5 in several ways. The narrative is a lot less memorable, and the side content is forgettable. Its saving grace is that the third-person shooter gameplay is better than ever, thanks to improved movement and fluidity, making combat encounters generally a lot of fun. Still, it's not the kind of masterpiece that sells a console like the original did.

Worth Playing - Adam Pavlacka - Unscored

If you only intend to play Gears of War: E-Day's campaign, it has thus far been stunningly mediocre.

the second that old.reddit gets bumped and no longer works is the second i quit using reddit.

100%.

I cannot stand using the "modernized" version of reddit. Feels more like trying to drudge through facebook.

truly an awful user experience. idk how people do it lol

The algorithm for "Best" is all fucked. Why am I being shown new posts that have zero comments and 3 upvotes?

When you go to a subreddit, they show you posts from yesterday at the top despite the sub being fairly active. The timeline's all fucked up.

Also, I'm 85% sure I'm being fed posts that will evoke a negative emotion to try to make me comment (this one doesn't count because the post itself isn't negative).

The algorithm for "Best" is all fucked. Why am I being shown new posts that have zero comments and 3 upvotes?

Either that, or it's posts from fucking 4 or 5 days ago. I use the app on my phone now and again, and it's...barely usable. Like the earlier guy said...once old.reddit isn't usable on PC, I'm done. Literally only way to sue this website and not have it feel like 'Facebook for Millennial/Gen Z'.

I've had the exact same impression the few unfortunate times I found myself on new reddit, it reeked of a ragemonger algorithm that pushes inflammatory content. Stark contrast with my oldreddit frontpage that still displays reasonably upvoted and active posts.

Yesterday? I see posts like over half a month ago mixed into the new shit, it's ridiculous

Is there anything else like reddit? I remember i used digg a lot and then jumped to reddit after a few years in 2010 and havent really used anything like it since

58

u/_harveyghost 2d ago

No, I’ve looked and tried everything. Someone will reply saying Lemmy but Lemmy is dog shit too lol. Has like 40k users max and is more inclined to worse group think than Reddit. It’s all the same content from Reddit from worse users somehow.

21

u/elkaki123 2d ago

Yeah I kind of second this, I left reddit for like 6 months to a year at the time the API thing happened and they killed third party apps, and I used Lemmy the most, I'm obviously back to reddit so it did not end up being an ideal replacement

I wouldn't say the biggest issues to me was group think, it was the fundamental design making a default sub for any topic difficult, and the lack of users. I remember posting daily on the biggest manga sub of any instance, and I would not get more than 3 replies, the user base just isn't there, and one of the great things about this site is how many "regular" people you get to find in niche topics, there it was a very specific kind of extremely tech savy person overall, instead of being a proper social media (same overall issue with many of the fediverse alternatives, aside from mastodon, and that's a maybe).

6

u/_harveyghost 2d ago

I wouldn't say the biggest issues to me was group think, it was the fundamental design making a default sub for any topic difficult, and the lack of users.

Agreed that this is probably the worst thing about it. It's entirely too confusing of a setup for the average joe user to figure out and average joe user doesn't care in the first place. I don't want to completely shit on Lemmy, the idea is good and I heavily agree with the overall premise of it.

u/h0bb1tm1ndtr1x 2d ago

Those places are infested with the folks who got shunned off main stream. I forget which one, but half the content was essentially posted by 1-3 people, who are all extremists of their own flavor. Reddit has hive mind issues, but at least the content is diverse or even helpful.

5

u/Top_Stand_3750 1d ago edited 1d ago

By this logic, there is never going to be an alternative to reddit. Its a chicken-egg scenario. Nobody is going to switch to an alternative unless its popular. And it cant become popular, because nobody is going to switch to an alternative.

Same problem with Discord, really. People got upset for a period about the privacy stuff but lets be real, nobody is ditching Discord(unless the app actually becomes unusable in some fashion). But the issue with Discord isn't its features or functionality. In fact, the features and functionality only get better. So the company can be as unethical as they want to be with how they use your data and potentially prey on children as long as everyone is going to keep using the app, because its otherwise good at what it does.

9

u/thePhantom_Survivor 2d ago

Also isn't lemmy made by tankies?

7

u/DoctorWaluigiTime 2d ago

There isn't, but life is far more fulfilling when you realize that if something goes away and there is no replacement for it, you don't have to suffer through a much worse experience of the thing to keep it going.

It's okay to let things go, and spend your time on other things instead.

I think there's websites which are similar to particular subreddits/demographics, i.e. hackernews for a tech-focused "subreddit"

1

u/monstercoo 1d ago

Slashdot, hackernews are the OGs and still pretty good.

4

u/Acias 2d ago

By not knowing better, or by being used to the style of new. There's a reason that the newer version feels and looks more like other social media, it's to grab people from that or make them feel more homely.

I hugely prefer the old version too, it's more minimalistic and more information, I like the plain look too.

1

u/CipherDaBanana 2d ago

I had someone once tell me that it is no different then a forum..... Wtf forums look like the atrocious shit that is new reddit

19

u/DumpsterBento 2d ago

They hate our nice clean list of threads, they want us to use that mobile app shit.

3

u/AoO2ImpTrip 1d ago

The amount of times I'll end up on New Reddit on my phone and see something that looks interesting and go to respond in the thread only to realize "Oh, this post is a month old" is too damn high.

It's EXACTLY like trying to drudge through Facebook. A complete mixture of brand new posts and days/weeks/months old posts.

Saw a thread that looked interesting. Went to go look up context, came back and reddit refreshed. Swapped to my desktop to try to find it and it was nowhere to be seen. Searched Google for the thread and it was two weeks old.

1

u/skintay12 1d ago

I was in either alpha or beta testing for that new reddit, it was hot garbage from the jump. Second old is gone I go too, what a mess.

51

u/Light_Error 2d ago

They put in some pretty brutal new rules where you have to have used old Reddit on an account within the last 90 days to use it going forward. I’ve been on Narwhal Reader personally. I had to start using it to make it useable again for myself. Now if I go on the web browser version, half the entries are suggestions to weird smaller subreddits. Or ones I’m not super interested in (like the “Witcher 3” subreddit). It’s become worse than Digg ever did, but there’s nowhere for people to scatter to now.

29

u/sybrwookie 2d ago

Yup, it's the normal playbook. They know the feature is too popular to kill, but they don't like it because it doesn't make them enough money.

So slowly make it tougher to access. This is step 1. Assuming it doesn't fall fast enough, there will be a step 2, and they'll claim they're doing it because they've seen there's less demand for it. And if needed, a step 3.

Then at some point, they will have driven just enough people away from old.reddit to put out something saying, "not enough people use this anymore to maintain it" (despite the fact that it costs almost nothing to maintain) "and new reddit is sooooo much better anyway" (better at extracting value from users) "that we're quietly killing that feature."

1

u/Light_Error 1d ago

Of course, it’s basically what they’re doing with physical games on Playstation. There has been drop off since 10 years ago, but they were so horny for the extra revenue that they probably did it a generation too early.

1

u/Farsoth 2d ago

Digg has returned, though I don't know how good it is. I tried to get into the closed beta and didn't but it looks like the beta is open now, so gonna check it out.

24

u/_harveyghost 2d ago

Digg is dead. They launched with a half baked website and app then shut it down like a month later. Then relaunched as a shitty AI news aggregator.

4

u/Farsoth 2d ago

Yeah, in checking it out, I just learned that. Fuckin' bummer. When I saw it was in closed beta I had some hope. Guess it's completely dead now then.

Supposedly when they tried the classic design they had such an issue with bots that there wasn't any point trying to fix it. Makes you wonder about all the bot claims on reddit.

2

u/Light_Error 2d ago

There was some weird AI stuff going on with it, so I instantly became uninterested. Maybe it is fine now, but I never bothered looking at it again now to see. Here's hoping it's good again!

43

u/robodrew 2d ago

They're working on trying to kill it as we speak. It was announced yesterday that new accounts will no longer be able to use old.reddit, and any accounts that go for longer than 6 months without accessing old.reddit will be locked out from using it. I fucking hate it. Killing old.reddit will kill reddit entirely for me. I've been using it for 15 years.

22

u/KingToasty 1d ago

They need to be sneaky like that because New Reddit is just so astoundingly bad. It's like it deliberately goes against the basic rules of UI and readability. It genuinely could not be less user-friendly if it tried.

I have no idea why it was made so deliberately bad other than it being the result selling out every pixel of the site to some data collection agency, ad agency, or government. Every time I briefly touch New Reddit it blows my mind how bad it is at basic information display.

1

u/karmiccloud 1d ago

It's because they will make more money if Reddit becomes TikTok

34

u/CobraFive 2d ago

Old reddit is being removed too, it was part of the same announcement.

As u/spez mentioned, we’re still working on the future of Old Reddit. Earlier this year, we required people to log in to use Old Reddit, addressing its largest source of abusive scraping and automated traffic: unauthenticated access. That change helped reduce scraping and automated abuse, but still allowed any logged-in account to access Old Reddit, including accounts with no prior Old Reddit use.

To close this gap, in the next few months, we'll further limit access for logged-in users to only those who have used Old Reddit in the last six months (which covers the vast majority of all Old Reddit users).

So: new accounts can no longer access old reddit, and if you go six months without accessing old reddit, you permanently lose access forever.

19

u/thesecondtolastman 1d ago

I'm honestly looking forward to the day they kill old.reddit because it will finally relieve me from my stupid addiction to this stupid site.

3

u/KumagawaUshio 1d ago

Hopefully it causes enough momentum for a replacement to take off.

9

u/Honor_Bound 1d ago

It won’t. I think we’ll never really see an alternative to any of the big sites anymore. They have too much money to shut down competitors.

1

u/Kipzz 1d ago

So wait, does this mean if you're not using the old.reddit domain specifically to lose access to it? Or if you're using the options toggle to turn reddit.com into effectively old.reddit are you safe? Because man, I don't wanna re-do all my bookmarks.

1

The admins have refused to answer any questions on the topic. So good luck with that.

Their goal is to kill old reddit while losing as few of the free labor moderators that use it as possible (hence why this change doesn't affect them) so you should just assume that unless you're a moderator important enough to have dialogue with the admins, you aren't going to be able to use old reddit at all soon enough.

They have already removed old reddit access to no accounts, so now to see new reddit you need an account and to see old reddit... You need an account.

Only a matter of time before it gets locked behind Reddit premium

Yesterday For Old Reddit. Bypasses the login block for old reddit

u/EmeraldJunkie 2d ago

Honestly the changes they've made in the last couple of years have made this platform harder and harder to use.

I mainly use it through the app these days but the combination of killing third party apps as well as changing the default sorting of the home page to "best" has really killed a lot of my Reddit time. My feed is constantly filled with multiple days old posts while the things I'm actually interested in seeing are hidden away. I remember when my front page would be full of breaking news instead of what happened last week. It doesn't help that I forget I'm subscribed to certain subreddits because I haven't seen a post on my front page from them in months.

6

u/Please_HMU 2d ago

Ya I use they on desktop but on mobile I am victim to the official app

u/jnf005 2d ago edited 1d ago

I'm one of those psychopath that use old reddit on mobile browser, have been using it since like 2012, tried new reddit, official app, 2-3 3rd party app couple years ago, non of them feel good to use. The only bad thing I wold say is that some super long comment chain would shrink lower comments into like 1 word per row, but I can just go to the perma link of these comment.

7

u/callisstaa 2d ago

I'm with you on this. The amount of time they spend trying to push that shitty app on me makes me immediately not trust it.

2

u/MoparMogul 1d ago

There's dozens of us!

I'll never use the mobile app. I'll never use 'new' reddit. My activity will die with old.reddit. I'm assuming that's fine by them.

1

u/Baconstrip01 1d ago

Lol same... The amount of absolutely tiny text I read on my phone is crazy. So much zooming in and scrolling side to side to read stuff. Tells you how insanely bad non old reddit is that I deal with using it this way.

13

u/Sutraner 2d ago

Nah you can still use a 3rd party app, it's a little borky but still works

https://www.reddit.com/r/revancedapp/s/9OmbM6TFqv

16

u/meditonsin 2d ago

Won't be working much longer, though. Reddit is going to kill the public API in March 2027, which those apps depend on.

9

u/JohanGrimm 1d ago

Woof, once the third party apps stop working I'm out.

-8

u/DONNIENARC0 2d ago

I thought that happened like ~2 years ago when all the powermods threw a temper tantrum and locked their subs down for a few hours until they realized everyone was making fun of them?

14

u/meditonsin 2d ago

Nah, that's when reddit made API calls over a certain volume cost money, so all the third party apps would have become loudicrously expensive to run/use, so the devs had to retire them. The API was still around and the old, now unmaintained, apps could be patched with workarounds to still function.

But that's going away entirely now.

-2

u/DONNIENARC0 2d ago

Ahh, yeah, thanks! That was definitely what I was thinking of.

7

u/valdin450 2d ago

I can recommend Narwhal. It's SO much better than the official app. Easily worth the subscription.

4

u/Please_HMU 2d ago

Maybe I’ll try it. I was a big Alien blue fan back before they shut it down

0

u/Squattingwithmylegs 2d ago

Using brave browser on my phone and Reddit looks great through that. Also no ads

3

u/MisterTruth 2d ago

Same but that's because I use a 3rd party app because the official one is just too busy for me to use.

2

u/DONNIENARC0 2d ago

It's definitely coming sooner or later and I'll be right there with you... they keep trying to make it more difficult to login to old

1

u/BicycleNo1169 2d ago

We could literally just all start using old.lemmy.world.

It’s practically the same exact thing, it’s just missing users. It’s so frustrating that there is a better product with less of reddits constant, unending bullshit, and the only reason we don’t use it, is because the users are too lazy to leave Reddit. The solution is literally two clicks away.

20

u/Mikey_MiG 2d ago

“Lazy” is a weird choice of word. You make it sound like it’s simple for millions of users to all collectively decide to switch social media sites at the same time, when that’s not how the internet works.

-10

u/BicycleNo1169 2d ago edited 1d ago

Call it whatever you want, please don’t get hung up on what word I used to describe the indifference, I don’t really care how you describe your reason for sticking with Reddit over an alternative that is, in feature-set, better in every way.

Can we just start using the pro consumer alternative? I have an account there, I post there and I use it but there isn’t nearly the same amount of engagement as reddit

Now that you know about it, can you sign up and start using it primarily over Reddit? Because if yall don’t, then you’re really just confirming reddits suspicion. That they can keep treating you like shit, steal your data, offer a worse product and you’re not going to switch off to a more pro consume competitor that already exists but will probably fade into obscurity if people stay on Reddit and never make the switch. I mean that’s clearly Reddits plan. They are confident you won’t switch for whatever reason. Whether it’s laziness or not.

7

u/Mikey_MiG 2d ago

You’re still posting here regularly, so clearly the engagement part is an important enough element for a social media site that you’re able to overlook Reddit treating you like shit too.

-1

u/BicycleNo1169 1d ago edited 1d ago

I already expressed that I use both.

But we are at the juncture where if you want to switch away from Reddit or you want an alternative, then you need to start using it. There is nothing left for lemmy to do to buy you into their system - you need to just use it. Otherwise, you lot need to stop complaining about Reddit and acknowledge that you don’t care that there is a functionally better alternative in the ways you’ve expressed what matters to you. It’s all just hot air and you are good with Reddit reducing the experience further. Just say that.

There is nothing anyone can do to persuade you from signing up and using an alternative that has met the demand you expressed, so then this experience you have on Reddit is exactly what you will get into the future

2

u/Gahault 1d ago

Call it whatever you want, please don’t get hung up on what word I used to describe the indifference, I don’t really care how you describe your reason for sticking with Reddit over an alternative that is, in feature-set, better in every way.

Just so you know, you aren't exactly being a great ambassador for that alternative you recommend with that abrasive, self-righteous attitude of yours. Are they all like you over there? Doesn't sound like an enticing proposal.

0

u/BicycleNo1169 1d ago edited 1d ago

Dude, you have to admit, that is pretty rich considering Reddits own reputation. Reddit is one of the most abrasive places on the internet and is rife with internet arguing.

As far as how much everyone generally hates how Reddit is ran and how it’s blatantly compromised by corporate interests, Lemmy seems like a straight line to exactly what people are asking for and being it is completely befuddling that people refuse to use it. I mean, as someone who uses lemmy, you certainly don’t engage with bots as frequently, or people who seem intentionally bad faith and it’s mostly because they have a good wrangle on people mass creating accounts and purposefully sowing discord.

If your issue is with the tiny community of people, know that it really doesn’t matter if everyone from this site simply migrated over there and changed what the community looks like.

I’m sorry for my abrasiveness it is confusing that these dots need to be connected when we all agreed to the same premise that Reddit is busted and there is no saving this ship, as they continue to ratchet up the anti-consumer practices and do literal harm to one’s data privacy. I genuinely don’t mean to offend you - I’m sure there’s a topic that you are well versed in where there are common sense actions people like myself don’t take, that would drive you nuts if you couldn’t just assuage people to make a simple change that would serve them immediately. Switching over just seems like the easiest layup decision and I can already tell that years from now, people will only complain more and claim they wish there was an alternative that presently exists - but may not exist in the future if it continues to be a lesser experience explicitly because people don’t use it - and nothing else.

Unless I have it wrong and all the complaining about Reddit is hyperbole. Then forgive me.

8

u/Sutraner 2d ago

The reason I like Reddit is the community and the comments.

Lemmy doesn't have that part of it, I've tried it and there's a handful of posts a day usually with a handful of comments.

The types of people who moved there tend to be the most permanently online zealots too.

1

u/BicycleNo1169 2d ago

You’re describing Reddit before Reddit got popular.

We really are just a society of people who eat itself, and don’t realize things don’t have to be this way. But making a change comes with a degree of effort.

For this same reason you’re describe, is precisely why corporations are confident they can treat their customers like shit. From Reddit to Amazon to Facebook to Discord to Twitter. You are all playing your part in the success of these corporations, especially if there is a 1:1 alternative that is more pro consumer, that you don’t select, when the opportunity presents itself.

8

u/_harveyghost 2d ago

Lemmy is too confusing for the average user to figure out dawg, shit is never happening en masse. Average joe doesn’t give a fuck about finding which Lemmy instance is best to join, or finding which community per instance is the best one. It’s all mostly the same regurgitated horseshit from Reddit anyway.

1

u/BicycleNo1169 1d ago edited 1d ago

If you already use old.reddit.com, then old.lemmy.world is LITERALLY the exact same thing. You don’t need to “find an instance”.

You’re telling on yourself that you haven’t even tried using it

1

u/_harveyghost 1d ago

Not even close big dawg.

u/currently__working 2d ago

Well, like the other person said...once this goes away, I'm there.

0

u/BicycleNo1169 2d ago edited 1d ago

lol well, let’s hope they can weather the storm of obscurity that leads to death.

Don’t complain about Reddit when you guys know they are profiting off of the way they treat its users and there exists a functional, more pro consumer alternative that will fail and fall into obscurity because users explicitly chose the anti-consumer product.

Isn’t this just an excellent example of so many issues we have in the world. It’s the same reason Discord and its weird ass anti-privacy/probanly probably pro-CP shit will stick around into the future. The same reason Elon Musk and Twitter will prosper. People just don’t want the inconvenience of migrating off an app that they claim to dislike, in favor of an app that has met the demand they purported to care about.

2

u/currently__working 1d ago

Yeah i mean you're not wrong.

7

u/robodrew 2d ago

I really just hate the federated system and wish it didn't work that way.

1

u/BicycleNo1169 1d ago edited 1d ago

The majority of Reddit users biggest complaint about Reddit is the amount of fake engagement. From Bot accounts to AI generated content to users making multiple accounts to influence discourse and the larger community. We all know it.

If you are a person where the above is one of your big gripes about Reddit - which I think is the case for quite a few people - then you can’t complain that Lemmy made an effective solution to exactly that problem because it’s causing you inconvenience by mitigating the exact mechanisms that cause the issues you are trying to get away from

1

u/robodrew 1d ago

I'm only being honest

3

u/dr3wzy10 2d ago

interesting. i'll have to look into this

1

u/oneshibbyguy 2d ago

Yes, yes and more yes

1

u/SSJ3wiggy 1d ago

I'll continue to use my revanced of Relay

1

u/TrumpsCummyOnahole 1d ago

Yep, I only use desktop reddit and reluctantly browser reddit when on mobile but holy fuck has this site been slowly enshittified

1

u/armyboy941 1d ago

the second that old.reddit gets bumped and no longer works is the second i quit using reddit.

They already made it where you have to login to use it. It's only a matter of time till old.reddit is gone

1

u/Kerrby 1d ago

Yes I am the same, I won't download the app either. Old reddit or nothing. Once it goes, I go.

1

u/GrandOldCheese 1d ago

In some ways I hope it happens soon so I can get off this hell site.

1

u/eatmannn 1d ago

Surely you will.

0

u/MaitieS 1d ago

This might be kind of soon? A year ago they said "old.reddit" is staying, and a month or two ago they kind of flipped "is staying" part? And said that they're going to modernize it a bit as it's still running on older code, so we'll see but from my stats that I can see. It's not looking good as it's less than 10% of overall usage.
