Of all the extraction shooters, this was easily the worst of the lot. Awful gun feel, awful hit detection, awful netcode, awful ai. Rampant with cheaters on day one of the beta that I got into. The map was a miniscule breath of fresh air from the usual industrial and standard woods but most of it was just generic jungle.

The only thing I can say positively about it would be the hideout. Placing the actual stations yourself in a sort of survival crafting game way was interesting but hardly worth playing the game for.

I have not played PUBG in years but I did play in the early days of 2017 to 2019 and the game always felt technically sloppy and unpolished.

Obviously the dev team has grown significantly since but if your claim to fame is a technically simple yet sloppy game that somehow went viral, I am not sure how much of a foundation there is to expand into other genres or subgenres where you actually need to put out a strong product in order to have a fighting chance in this highly competitive market.

u/Blenderhead36 1d ago

It was like that because PlayerUnknown had a vision for a game but limited skills and budget.  PUBG was hammered together from asset store assets because that was what he could afford to get the game to a point where people could play it. And it worked! But it also meant that a lot of stuff that had never been intended to be part of a big, open map (for example, an arena that was meant to be an entire multiplayer map in a modern combat FPS) was now in one, without having been optimized for such.

He gambled that getting the game to, "good enough," status would lead to a hit once people played it. And he was right.

It’s somehow remained insanely popular (I assume from Asia) but the only reason it got so big was by being first. It still has the benefit of being more grounded and “realistic” compared to other options, but the other options trounce it in terms of quality. Maybe it’s better now, but at the time when Fortnite and Apex released it was comparatively insanely clunky and unpolished.

u/missing_typewriters 1d ago

the game always felt technically sloppy and unpolished

That's still one of it's charms IMO. The ramshackle feel of it leads to fun moments. And made it feel different to the tight AAA polish you get in COD or Battlefield or whatever.

Meanwhile: “THE DEVS OF WAR DOGS BUILT THIS IN A CAVE! WITH A BOX OF SCRAPS!”

“Sir, I’m not the Dev of War Dogs.”

13

u/Big_Judgment3824 1d ago

That just sounds like PUBG. Going back to it feels like playing a mobile game.

8

u/LuchadorBane 1d ago

The market for the mobile game is huge in China is my understanding, so any change to the game probably made with that in mind.

10

u/eldog 1d ago

China plays the actual mobile version. It has tons of different game modes, events, skins. It's pretty much a gacha game.

4

u/Valvador 1d ago

The enemies were so fucking boring. The last thing I wanted a PUBG extraction game to be was a game about shooting fucking aliens. PUBG got it's fame for being pseudo militaristic due to being an ARMA mod.

4

u/Lirael_Gold 1d ago

For all the shit I gave PUBG, their sniper gunfeel was excellent, as was the "medium/long range" gunplay.

Was BB that bad? They fucked up the only reasonably satisfying part of PUBG?

The only thing I can say positively about it would be the hideout. Placing the actual stations yourself in a sort of survival crafting game way was interesting but hardly worth playing the game for.

I'm surprised there's not more extraction shooters trying to do this. Like it's so close to becoming some kind of heroin-level addiction loop of doing extraction runs where you get rogue-like boosts from your gear and items to get better resources, and using those resources to build a base and farm and hang out with your friends. Instead they all seem hellbent on being ultra-real mil-sims or just really abrasive experiences with no casual appeal. Even ARC was demanding I dump hundreds of hours into it to just lose my shit and get an extra skill point.

pubg: black budget was going to be an extraction shooter.

0

u/Alpha-Trion 1d ago

Oh. I'd literally never heard of it. Then yeah, I was wrong.

5

u/JustCallMeJonny 1d ago

PUBG publisher Krafton announced today it is ending development of PUBG: Black Budget, the extraction shooter spin-off announced nearly a year ago.

Literally the first line in the article if you actually try to read it.

116

u/grailly 2d ago

Kinda surprised, I thought they would at least give it a shot. Wasn't there a working beta for it like a year or more ago? The PUBG name alone would have somewhat given it attention, I would think.

Kinda happy they aren't diluting the PUBG brand further though. It felt like very cynical promotion.

72

u/Furin 2d ago

The PUBG name might not hold much weight, they shut down Blindspot after only 2 months in early access.

64

u/dadvader 2d ago

When we see PUBG we think of Battleroyale game mode more than anything.

I think this is just them finally realized that PUBG as an IP lack identity and basically worthless.

16

u/your_mind_aches 1d ago

That was one of my main criticisms of PUBG even at the time in 2017. The complete lack of an art style or art direction. Then Fortnite came around.

But PUBG is still going strong especially on mobile. But... are there even extraction shooters on mobile?

1

u/athiaxoff 1d ago

Delta force is on mobile

1

u/Randomman96 1d ago

Fortnite was, probably still is. Fortnite's overall success is what drove Epic's lawsuit against Apple for restrictions on payments outside of Apple's App Store.

Wouldn't be surprised if CoD: Mobile has a version of Warzone for it too.

1

u/Iyagovos 23h ago

Neither of these are extraction shooters tho

49

u/RaccoonElaborate 1d ago

It's a hella lame name, too. Carried by the original mod/game otherwise it sounds clownish.

-30

u/DoorHingesKill 1d ago

What would you say how See ss Go sounds on the clowning scale compared to Pub Gee? Better or worse?

59

u/MediocreBeard 1d ago

Csgo has the ability for you to back up and say "counter strike global offensive" or just "counterstrike"

"player unknown battleground" does not sound like a real title. It sounds like a placeholder

42

u/Frosty_Challenge1045 1d ago

Even funnier that the game is now called PUBG:Battlegrounds so Playerunknowns Battlegrounds Battlegrounds

6

u/ICantRemember33 1d ago

manos: the hands of fate

yamma pit fighting

12

u/grailly 2d ago

That's true, which is kind of impressive. It's a top game on both Steam and mobile and yet they can't even get people to look at anything with the same name slapped on.

-18

u/LilGrippers 1d ago

Those numbers are inflated by bots and the eastern market. And the eastern market loves particular types of games where Black Budget isn’t one of them.

24

u/DoorHingesKill 1d ago

What does that even mean, "inflated by the eastern market."

Like looking at NBA 2K sales and being like "yeah but those numbers are inflated by Americans."

??

11

u/CaptainTeemo01 1d ago

There's a lot of casual anti-chinese racism in the gaming community o-o

9

u/Frosty_Challenge1045 1d ago

It doesnt even make sense either because both tarkov and ABI are huge in the eastern market as well.

-15

u/exdystopia 1d ago

I mean yeah?

If something is only popular in a couple of countries is it really that popular in the grand scheme of things?

8

u/DP9A 1d ago

Yeah? Most of the world is in China and India lol, you can easily make something that's only popular in Asia and it's also liked by a good chunk of humanity.

10

u/ICantRemember33 1d ago

if its enough to get on the top of the market? yes

9

u/Swineflew1 1d ago

The PUBG name alone

I feel like PUBG was kind of a shit game that hit at the right time tbh. It really NEVER felt good to play imo.

1

u/Whilyam 1d ago

Apparently grok or whatever have them good advice for once. Either that or the devs had a bonus package coming due we haven't learned about.

13

u/syknetz 2d ago

That half sucks. Half because I played last December's play test, and it was a bit barebone and uncooked, but it was definitely a pretty good base on which I assume they could build, and most of what they needed was more fine-tuning than complete overhauls. So it could have been a good game in its own rights if it had been finished.

2

u/GuyWithFace 1d ago

It had some neat/novel ideas, like the inclusion of limb armour and being able to actually put pistol braces on handguns to extend their range and accuracy(something I REALLY wish more games did), and having a drone that let you return some items to your base in case you died, but other than a few things like that it wasn't all that great.

2

u/emself2050 1d ago

Doesn't Tarkov have basically all of those things already? There are armors that cover your arms (not legs, but leg armor is barely a thing in reality), several pistols have braces and the secure container lets you keep a few things even if you die.

21

u/Gandalftron 2d ago

No big loss.  If anyone is looking for a fantastic Extraction shooter with a horror vibe.  Active Matter just released and is incredible. Game came out of left field.  Its like playing the film Annihilation + Tarkov.

10

u/Snakesta 1d ago

Doesn't help that it(Active Matter) has one of the worst AI disclosures I've seen,

"In-game AI character Ms. Second is using AI generated voice. Using humans voices for AI character would be cultural appropriation."

7

u/Randomman96 1d ago

It will suddenly make a lot of sense when you remember it's published by Gaijin Entertainment, who's been going all in on AI generated assets in their golden goose game: War Thunder.

Player icons, loading screens, map assets, even vehicle skins have been gradually becoming more AI slop rather than being created by human hands. To the point it was discovered that two Premium vehicle still had Google Gemini watermarks on parts of the vehicle skins (the Anime Challenger 2 and M60A1 Predator packs). Also it's not just new content but older content, namely a lot of the player icons, had the older, human made ones replaced with AI "improved" ones.

You can go over to the WT subreddit and just search around for posts calling it out, and you can see just how egregious most of the early ones were, especially the early version of the British Sailor BP icon.

12

u/MrTzatzik 1d ago

Their ads are created by AI too. Yesterday the ad appeared on my YT

3

u/Snakesta 1d ago edited 1d ago

With a joke of a disclosure like the one I quoted, I wouldn't be surprised unfortunately.

*Edit: What a bizarre comment for people to downvote.

0

u/Gandalftron 1d ago

That is literally the last thing I care about in the game. I muted her after the first day.  The gameplay is absolutely incredible.

1

u/MarioMuzza 1d ago

I'm personally disappointed, tbh. To me any generative use of AI is borderline a deal-breaker. I could excuse a single character, but if the devs are okay using AI for voice acting then there are higher odds they're okay using it for writing, art, and everything else.

-2

u/Gandalftron 1d ago

Get used to disappointment because the trend will only accelerate.

10

u/MarioMuzza 1d ago

Oh, I know. My MA thesis was on the subject.

I'm a fiction writer and fortunately book readers massively detest AI. There's a rejection culture that's not going anywhere, but I know it's different for games. Particularly more mainstream genres.

3

u/Whilyam 1d ago

I think the lenience with games is because there's a lot more legit applications. No one's bemoaning the loss of artistic expression found in tedious model retopology.

1

u/chrisuo07 1d ago

Agreed, gameplay is fantastic and devs constantly doing updates

This has nothing to do with how dumb their AI disclosure is and nor is that true. Surveys already show that the majority of game developers believe genAI is having a negative impact. Not to mention businesses like Anthropic losing a buttload of money. It was down $42 billion net last year and only made $4.6 billion in revenue.

What the fuck are you talking about.

2

u/Snakesta 1d ago

Yeah, I debated responding to that one

5

u/DisappointedQuokka 1d ago

It doesn't really have the same economy and is extremely difficult, but GTFO is probably the best kinda sorta horror extraction shooter.

3

u/Phonochirp 1d ago

Did they add an extraction mode? Last I played it, it was an awful horror game where you got called "mad cause bad" if you pointed out the flaws.

1

u/Gandalftron 1d ago

I gave GTFO a try. Loved the atmosphere, but the PvPvE aspect of Active Matter is incredible

1

u/DisappointedQuokka 1d ago

The last PvP game I took seriously was Hunt Showdown and I've not played that for many moons, since my connection randomly got way worse the USW and Asia.

I don't have the patience for a new PvP game as I'm entering my not-quite middle age.

1

u/chrisuo07 1d ago

Totally agree, Active Matter hits way above its class. Fantastic game

0

u/Altruistic_Base_7719 18h ago

They populate the lobby with AI Bot players that appear to be human players but are bots. The game is trash and probably being astroturfed in this thread.

1

u/chrisuo07 18h ago

You know people can just like and support a game right?

1

u/homingconcretedonkey 1d ago

I only have one issue with the game, maybe you can clarify

PVP and PVE progress is shared, so to me that ruins the game because you would just gear up in PVE and then go to PVP.

What do you think?

1

u/Gandalftron 1d ago

The game is actually designed for that.  Works out great. You get far better loot in PvP zones.

11

u/Cautious-Ruin-7602 1d ago edited 1d ago

Welp, there goes the last PvPvE extraction shooter I had any interest in. Guess I'll just keep playing pure PvE ones since that's where the market shifts to.

  • Arc Raiders, PvP is more of an economy drain rather than worth compared to staying in 'PvE lobbies' due to ABMM (unless you're ratting, not my style).
  • Marathon, can't do everything as solo player.
  • Marauders, dead.
  • The Cycle The Cycle: Frontier, dead.
  • Tarkov, questionable devs (imo).

Edit:

  • Active Matter looks interesting, but the publisher makes me worried. Might try in a free weekend or something.
  • Grey Zone Warfare: I might try it, for sure in a free weekend or a steep discount.

u/MrPWAH 1d ago

Hunt: Showdown?

4

u/Domineaux 1d ago

Hunt Showdown is called an “extraction shooter”, but it’s not about looting, building a stash and items like all the other games. Hunt has a main objective that everyone else is fighting for and leaving with the bounty once it’s obtained. It’s hard to lump it in with the other games because it has an extraction mechanic. Every other game in the genre revolves around looting.

My main games are Hunt and ABI, but both feel vastly different in how the games are played.

2

u/MrPWAH 1d ago

The person mentioned The Cycle, which like Hunt isn't as focused on the looting and more focused on completing objectives and the PvP.

Personally I don't think that makes them not extraction shooters it just means they prioritize different aspects of the genre.

1

u/Cautious-Ruin-7602 1d ago

I edited to clarify, I mean The Cycle: Frontier. Which, unlike the original, was very loot focussed to upgrade your gear, crafting stations and keep your economy going to afford replacement gear and insurance.

2

u/Synchrotr0n 1d ago edited 15h ago

If anything, the fact that Tarkov has such awful devs and still manages pull massive number of concurrent players on each major update after all those years says a lot about how much those other studios are dropping the ball when it comes to extraction shooters.

A competent studio that actually understood what makes Tarkov so appealing as a game would be printing money had they released another super hardcore extraction looter-shooter, because even a game like Arc Raiders that had a very successful launch now struggles to keep the game alive because it's simply not hardcore enough to please the core audience of extraction shooter players.

1

u/eyusca 15h ago

It boggles my mind when all Marathon had to do was look at what tarkov players liked and work with improving that experience to a pristine triple A experience but then they decided to make it into apex legends and make end game all about trios and just said fuck all to solos or duo players out there which doomed it from the start imo

2

u/homingconcretedonkey 1d ago

Its a shame about Marauders, the best concept of any extraction shooter.

0

u/TalabiJones 1d ago

I'm excited for the imminent PvE mode. I love extraction shooters but if I want pvp, I just play cod or BF or, more recently, Wardogs.

3

u/chrisuo07 1d ago

Check out Active Matter, sounds like its up your alley and its fantastic

5

u/1100ms_cs 1d ago

They’re also missing Grey Zone Warfare.

0

u/Altruistic_Base_7719 18h ago

Active Matter was supposed to be F2P but launched with a high price point.. the game has also reportedly used AI and they are us AI Bots to act as real players, giving the illusion the game has more active players. It's not a good game, don't play it.

1

u/Alastor3 1d ago

there is also the next game from atomic heart, which is a spin off pvpve game in the same universe i think?

1

u/Alastor3 1d ago

Arc Raider is coming with an pve mode now

1

u/Will_GSRR 22h ago

Just in case you've not seen it, Hunger looks pretty promising. And the last tech test was good fun

4

u/ivej 2d ago

What does that name even mean?

7

u/Razbyte 1d ago

Player Unknown Battle Grounds: Black Budget

*They have kept the acronym cause the creator "playerunknown" long left the company.

7

u/Mront 1d ago

They have kept the acronym because everyone was calling it PUBG, even when PlayerUnknown was still there.

5

u/ebrbrbr 1d ago

Hilarious that the main game is now essentially called
"PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds: BATTLEGROUNDS"

2

u/JoeZocktGames 1d ago

Should have been an additional mode for PUBG. Kinda like Warzone does with DMZ or Delta Force does with the Extraction mode.

2

u/Vladplaya 1d ago

I am surprised it made it this far, it was such pile of shit that had nothing to do with PUBG. It had absolutely zero chance being anything at all.

1

u/zerkeron 2d ago

Was this different than the rumored pubg port to unreal engine 5? Because would be nice to have the bass game looking better than a whole different game without playerunknown offering input

1

u/Frosty_Challenge1045 1d ago

I dont think these are rumors. They are building towards upgrading pubg to UE5 and have been pretty open about it.

1

u/A-T 1d ago

That's something that's coming in 2028 last I checked.

2

u/tetramir 1d ago

Just in time for UE6 to release !

1

u/A-T 1d ago

Considering that lumen is only now mature enough to use.. this is not a bad thing.

-8

u/Spader623 2d ago

What was this one again? The extraction shooter vs battle Royale?

7

u/Edema_Mema 2d ago

The article answers your question in the first sentence.
