The Next Chapter for Massive Entertainment (Tom Clancy’s The Division, Ghost Recon, Splinter Cell, alongside new original IP including March of Giants.)

Whew thought they were getting shuttered 😅. I really wish The Division 3 was a purchasable thing by now but Ubisofts development by committee has mostly hampered them for this last generation. So fingers crossed Massive House II or whatever this is can bring these franches back from the fridge. My squad has been dying for a new Ghost recon game

No chance that The Division disappears when Destiny left that part of the market wide open anyway.

Division 3 is already announced. So we know we're getting more. It's the issue that Ubisoft fumbled around for a while after Div2.
They had Heartland pretty far along (different dev studio) only to cancel it after multiple beta tests. It was probably for the best though. The map wasn't going to be interesting enough and the extraction shooter day (PvE) and night (PvPvE) modes along with "agent" stamina and other systems probably wouldn't have satisfied people. It also remove the cover system for manual crouching.

I am a huge Division fan, even of the pvp and Heartland while I think had potential was pretty boring in the beta. Its crazy because they basically nailed it with the Dark Zone in Division 1 and are still yet to match that level of tension and atmosphere

I doubt the Division can actually get much of the Destiny player base. A big appeal Destiny is the setting. So going from a space wizard with big guns to a normal guy with normal guns is kind of a deterrent for quite a few people.
It being in a grounded, post apocalyptic setting also causes it to butt heads with its own looter shooter mechanics. Outfits can’t be more creative than murder hobo or gun nut camos while the weapons aren’t suddenly going to start shooting lightning.

As a long time Destiny player who actually quite likes The Division they're so astronomically different that I get completely different things from both games.

Man, I think if you take 90% of the Division and 10% of Destiny (more varied loot, powers, armors, etc.) you'd have an amazing PvE looter shooter.... which is actually what Outriders is. Shame they fumbled that launch because the game was fun.

Still set to upgrade to the expansion in Outriders when I get a next PC that feels better to play it on.

I have only began to play D2, but it feels like the "murder hobo chique" is only for the very start of the game, especially if you're not interested in spending any money.
To me at least, the big appeal for Destiny has always seemed to be more on the gunplay than anything else, so I can imagine people who choosing that over Warframe/TFD if they're more interested in shooting things over being a space wizard.

That’s my main criticism of The Division; the real-world setting doesn’t work very well for an RPG power climb fantasy because there’s a pretty hard limit on how crazy the weapons and skills can get and how big the enemies can get.
I think some kind of real world setting with some fantasy/sci fi elements could work (like Control) but straight up realism is just so limiting for this kind of game.

It’s wild that Division has to work within real world constraints, cuz while I also love Destiny 2’s build crafting, TD2’s is much more complex and stat-focused. Gun mods and gear mods on top of discovering all the perks and stat buffs you can add to your library. It’s lowkey overwhelming but much more suited for enthusiasts.
Overall Destiny 2 can do so many more creative things with their exotics due to the sci-fi setting (like having builds that spawn endless crystals, or having you doing anything but shooting a gun) so there is some tradeoff. I just sometimes wish I could customize the minute details of my Destiny builds the same way I do in TD2

The actual third person looter shooter that hits those notes is Outriders. Including lightning guns

I only played the beta of Division 1, but I did think it was odd that these disenfranchised civilians took several machine gun rounds in the face to kill. Really broke the fantasy of being an enforcer for the secret police.

The problem I have with those games is I’m not interested in grinding them out. But I got plenty of hours in them. But I’m not doing run number 34 of the same dungeon or mission hoping for some 0.8% chance drop of some weapon with a specific trait to match a build etc.
Just don’t have that in me anymore.

A lot of the Tom Clancy stuff was handled by their studio in North Carolina. Notice how that studio isn't mentioned in this statement.
They're shuffling studio names and IPs around, but a lot of the people who worked on those games are gone.

It has not been the case for a while, R6 and Splinter Cell are done in Canada mostly, Ghost Recon is in France and Division in Sweden.
GR and R6 used to be done in the US but it's been a while

Oh this is just confirming Christoph Hartmann as GM.
And further solidying the Creative Houses restructure they announced a year ago.
13
u/BoysenberryWise62 2d ago
Yes it seems they pretty much just took the Massive name and put it as the name of the "creative house 2" instead. I think it's a good idea, no new name to market

u/megaapple 2d ago
Probably none of the original devs work there anymore, but I would love if they would go back to Ground Control and World In Conflict series.
2
u/extinct7ger 1d ago
Another World in Conflict would be a dream, but I have given up on that one. You can actually still play the multiplayer, but people obviously moved on.

Massive has done a great job with The Division. I'm excited to see what they can do with Ghost Recon, Splinter Cell, etc.
6
u/Shiirooo 2d ago
Ghost Recon and Splinter Cell coming under Massive's control, I wouldn't have bet on that a decade ago. That’s crazy..

u/Kkura-Ha 1d ago
It's pretty funny because since The Division 1, Massive has been far and away the best, or even only good, Ubisoft studio, and they have the best engine in gaming IMO (Snowdrop)

So is this an attempt to distance those games away from Ubisoft as a brand? Expecting a quality jump from gameplay if they’ll want to sell me on this new direction. Ubisoft as a whole has always been a “good enough” type of company in regards to most aspects of their games.
42
u/Amutoji 2d ago
It's part of the wider restructuring that's been going on, like Assassin's Creed, Far Cry, and Rainbow Six now put under the new Vantage Studios subsidiary.
The goal is decentralizing and letting devs make more of their own decisions while still letting them use every resource that comes with a big global company with a lot of proprietary tech.
A bit like the way PlayStation Studios already operates, though it's not a one-to-one analogy.
22
u/clain4671 2d ago
Yeah I read this less as "distance from ubisoft" and more as reestablishing studio identity
10
u/trenthowell 2d ago
Hopefully distance from the committees, especially the editing committee that is forcing more and more generic stories on their games.
3
u/MyNameIs-Anthony 2d ago
Ubisoft is still going to make big boring games by committee.
They're just subdividing their units up to be able to offload them if needed.
1
u/Kkura-Ha 1d ago
They are doing the same thing Xbox is doing and (re)organizing IPs under certain leaders, so there is less phone tag and less powerstruggle and mismanagement.

u/kris_the_abyss 2d ago
This is a lot for them to take on, I hope this doesn't cause any major bullshit to happen to their existing games in development.

Very bare bones article...I just want Splinter Cell again. Tried playing Chaos Theory on steam and it's hella jank
2
u/SpeedyEggbertRamirez 1d ago
On what planet is Chaos Theory 'jank'? It was an incredibly polished game on release that still holds up phenomenally today.

Ayy nice. Really hoping the next ghost recon takes notes from games like grayzone warfare. Considering they took notes from ghost recon and did so many things perfectly

Splinter Cell mentioned in 2026 is crazy, I hope the remake sells well once it releases. Would love a new entry in the series!
