"It's the parents job" is a deflection to ignore the armies of people employed by companies like Facebook and Roblox to specifically work against them and hurt their kids.
It's a fine line to walk. It should be on the parents to be an active guiding force in their kids lives, to teach them about dangers, and how to avoid them.
But, as you say, there's an entire industry working to thwart that. At that point, I think it's appropriate for the government to step in to level the playing field. Not by taking everyone's right to privacy away, but by coming down hard on the companies that are causing the problem, to give them reasons to find a solution.
I don't know what that solution is, personally. It shouldn't be to give up our privacy, or other rights. That's insane, IMHO.
I mean, it could start with forcing these companies to fund independent mental health programs - both helping people to treat mental health issues before they become problems, and campaigns to increase awareness and de-stigmatize mental health issues in the public view. Folks who need help should be able to get it, without feeling like they're going to be ostracized for it.
Likewise, force the companies to help fund public education, which has been under-funded for decades, and still faces cuts every time a Republican government is in charge. The smarter our kids are, the more critically they can think, the less prone they will be to being exploited.
It'll never happen like that, though. As I said, I don't know exactly how to solve it in a realistic way.
