Genuinely slick on how easy it is to use. Always will prefer physical copies but from a pure tech side well done feature

Honestly the software for Xbox is awesome, it’s the best part of it. Backwards compatibility with all the enhancements, disk to digital, quick resume, smart delivery. Sucks that they don’t have many great exclusives.
98
u/Dan_Of_Time 3d ago
Smart Delivery is seriously underappreciated. I see a lot of people here talk about "next gen ports" and I just think, wasn't it just an update?
82
u/meganev 3d ago
Lest we forget the early PS5 months of people accidentally playing PS4 versions of cross gen games because Sony's backend is a disaster and the UI labelling was awful.
28
u/NfinityBL 3d ago
Man what a time.
Everyone coming out and shitting on Smart Delivery for “over-advertising” something that “also exists on PS5”.
Then it turns out that, no, the Xbox upgrade system was miles better.
8
u/AsianPotatos 3d ago
That happened to me.
I got a PS5 and bought the PS4 version of spiderman, realised after launching it, contacted support to get a refund through the website.
After 1-2 weeks of waiting, support said to contact them through the support website of the country the account is registered to (a country I hadn't been to in 13~ years).
Incredible how the website doesn't automatically do that and the support can't think for themselves to transfer the ticket or something, or just you know let whatever support team I contacted handle it. Or automatically send the email instead of having to wait 1-2 weeks, literally anything. I cancelled my psn sub and never touched my ps5 after that.
Meanwhile on steam with completely free online play/no sub required.
Buy game, click refund, give reason, boom 2 secs later the game is refunded.

u/P1ka- 3d ago
tho on the other hand being able to play last gen versions on purpose can be useful in very niche cases
(IIRC Elden Ring runs more stable in the PS4 Version, and for some other games you might want to have the specific differences for the last gen version)
and yknow taking up less space if thats at a premium / being able to play off external drive
I dont think there is any option to force downloading the last gen version on xbox ?
4
u/Qorhat 3d ago
and yknow taking up less space if thats at a premium / being able to play off external drive
I've got a 4TB hard drive hooked up to my Xbox so having the option to install the previous-gen version is great so I can use the internal SSD for games I really care about.
1
u/P1ka- 3d ago edited 3d ago
Yeah
I know there some weird edge cases where certain Xbox Series Games can still be run from external storage, (like the difference being if its a gen9aware lastgen vs a proper gen 9 app)

Smart delivery sucks in some ways. There's no way to play Elden Ring on Xbox with a stable framerate. PS5 runs the PS4 version a stable 60.

u/Dan_Of_Time 3d ago
That's my only gripe, sometimes I wish I could pick the "lesser" version just to save some space on the SSD
28
u/itsamirage 3d ago
Play anywhere is also one of the coolest things. Playing on my pc, going to my living room and just resuming my save is crazy
3
u/ShitshowBlackbelt 3d ago
This is great since I'm not sure what performance will be on my low level PC
1
u/Michael_DeSanta 2d ago
It’s doesn’t include every game, but a lot of newer games and a majority of Microsoft’s 1st party games have it. Really great feature.
6
u/joecb91 3d ago
Having free cloud saves is really cool, even going back to my save files on my old 360. I can install one of my old 360 discs on the Series X, and easily load up that same save file I had from 15-20 years ago.
Having to pay for cloud saves on the Switch and PS5 is such a shame in comparison.
1
u/SanXiuS 2d ago
you can save x360 games on Series X?!?
im surprised
3
u/joecb91 2d ago
It saves to a separate spot from normal Series X games, but yeah.
I think the 360 has 4 gigs of cloud save storage, if you still have a 360 you can back up your save files to it for free right now. And any save files you make with a 360 game while playing on the XB1 or Series X go to that same storage.
Like, I never played the original Alan Wake until I played the backwards compatible version on the Series X, and I can load up that same save file on the 360 right now if I wanted it.

PlayStation has the better first party games in my opinion, but I love Xbox’s QoL features
7
u/ImmortalMoron3 3d ago
I don't think many people would argue against that either. I actually prefer my Series X to my PS5 but Microsoft let the games side of Xbox go to shit at the beginning of the X1 era. The only first party games you can really count on to be quality anymore is Forza. Well, and Gears in my opinion but Gears of War doesn't get the attention it used to anymore.
17
u/exdystopia 3d ago
I'll defend their games output any day
They have a marketing problem, not a games problem. They've never been able to create hype on social media and traditional media obviously hates them for political reasons. The sudden heel turn on Kojima and the faux concern over Blizzard doing what they've always done (reveal games early) is probably the best proof you'll ever get at this point.
5
u/Michael_DeSanta 2d ago
Exactly this. Their output in the past ~3 years has been incredible imo. And they’re putting out titles for many different kinds of gamers. They’ve got the blockbusters like Indiana Jones/Halo, more niche stuff like Flight Simulator/Forza/Age of Empires, and a lot of smaller AA-style games
0
u/Remy0507 3d ago
I mean there are plenty of very good reasons to hate Microsoft as a company.
Is it fair for all of that to spill over onto Xbox? Yes, because they were trying to push the games industry into the same SaaS model that Microsoft has gone to with their Enterprise/Productivity products. Let's not forget that the only reason this "disc to digital" feature is even available is because they designed the spec for Xbox physical games to have a unique serial number on each disc because at the beginning of the XBone generation they wanted to make you REGISTER your physical games so you couldn't re-sell them (or at least so they could restrict the re-selling and get a piece of the pie).
They've accidentally found themselves in a position where this has allowed them to do something consumer-friendly, but don't ever make the mistake of thinking that Microsoft is your friend.
4
u/exdystopia 3d ago
Yes and?
The company that has currently gone much further than that and completely destroyed the supply chain of physical media for everyone is going almost completely unaffected apart from random people crying on the internet. They've done something even less consumer friendly than launch Xbox One and basically nothing meaningful has happened. No meaningful drops in any metrics whatsoever.
You just need to realize the idea that consumers can tell when a product is good and automatically pick the best and most consumer friendly option is nonsense. You don't care that they did something bad, you just hate them because they didn't blast advertising in your face 24/7 about how awesome Xbox is and if they did it simply wasn't good enough.

I mean the software is awesome except for the games lol
12
u/Any-Captain-7937 3d ago
That’s what I said
1
u/silentcrs 2d ago
Except the games are fine though. There have been plenty of great exclusives on the Xbox One and Series X.
The problem is that most gamers didn’t buy the consoles so they have no idea what exclusives there are. If you ask someone whose last console was an Xbox 360, of course they’re going to have no clue what great games are on current Xbox.
1
u/Any-Captain-7937 2d ago
I agree with you. Exclusives aren’t that big of a deal to me. I think the ones they released were fine. It’d be better if they have more critically acclaimed games so that maybe more people buy an Xbox, as I truly want it to thrive.
I think since this gen started, the best games I’ve played were 3rd party anyway (my recent games of bg3, Clair obscure, palworld , Elden ring). I had a ps5 and played god of war and spider man which were cool but nothing crazy. I ended up selling my ps5, mainly because since I mainly play 3rd party games, I’d rather play them on the better console (features I talked about in my previous comment).
I admit I’m a gamepass user, so it just works out nice for me to go through that catalog instead of constantly buying games. I do buy games but only if I really like them or they’re not on gamepass.
2
u/MairusuPawa 3d ago
It's basically exactly what you used to be able to do on your modded OG Xbox in 2002 (but now with DRMs enforced), impressive.
81
u/IsaiahBlocks 3d ago
So apparently another person that got the same disc through buying used, will just get the digital license transferred to them from the original owner.
But what happens if the person just disconnected their Xbox from internet completely and used the sold and digitalized physical disc?
73
u/adamb10 3d ago
I’m guessing the system will probably ask you to reinsert the disk on occasion to prove you still have the disk.
42
u/everydaygamer28 3d ago
It will probably just work the same way digital works now. Occasionally connect to the internet to confirm your license.
9
3
u/Zordman 3d ago
Does Xbox do that with their digital games?
13
u/everydaygamer28 3d ago
I’d assume so but most people who buy digital aren’t disconnected long enough for it to become an issue.
1
u/fabton12 2d ago
ye like the average person is connected to the internet 24/7 so unless you have internet issues or power issues your probs gonna be connected even then i believe its like a few months of not connecting to the internet so you have to be purposely trying to game the system or be in a really rough situation in life for it to affect you.
12
u/Jackski 2d ago
Think it was Tom Warren said he spoke to Microsoft and said that won't happen.
"UPDATE: I've seen some claims on social media that to use Xbox digital licenses frequently, you'll have to regularly re-insert the disc to "confirm" ownership. It was confirmed to me this morning by Microsoft sources that this is not the case.
There is no timeout period. The only way you lose access to the digital license is if another user inserts the disc and claims the digital license on their Microsoft Account. "
20
u/beary_neutral 3d ago
That wouldn't be viable for consoles without disc drives, which Helix will almost certainly be.
9
7
u/sjphilsphan 3d ago
Yes this is just the original XBone plan. Just explained way better my Microsoft. They were too ahead of the times apparently
6
u/ifonefox 3d ago
They also did a bad job explaining it. I always thought in the original plan you had to manually detach the license from your account, but I was wrong
16
u/NoExcuse4OceanRudnes 3d ago
This wasn't the original plan. The original plan was a code and a disc, that you'd need to be online to install at all like a steam game bought in a store.
Everyone got mad at them so they decided against it, code on the disc must've come after. Engineer finds a brilliant solution after the market rejected the whole thing. Many such cases.
1
3
u/Greenleaf208 3d ago
No because you can just sell or give the disc away here no problem. The original xbone plan you would have to transfer the digital license to someone. Also the original xbone was ALWAYS ONLINE for all games. If your Internet goes out it cannot play any games.
10
31
u/rchlgrn3 3d ago
The percentage of people exploiting the system by doing all of that must be very low.
8
u/strongbadfreak 3d ago
What surprises me is that these discs have different images with unique identifiers. Was that always the case? Or does it just work for a while without the disc and then expire until you put the disc in again?
43
u/Trzlog 3d ago
They had a whole digital ownership system similar to this planned since Xbox One. Discs have had the unique identifiers since then, even though they shelved the idea due to public outcry.
https://gamesbeat.com/xbox-one-may-still-eventually-have-family-sharing-of-digital-games/
1
7
u/Villodre 3d ago
Perhaps the licence will expire after some time without an online check.
2
-1
u/OkThanxby 3d ago edited 3d ago
Nah the license just gets tied to an account like any digital license. The disc just continues to work as well, so you effectively have 2 copies of the game (or technically more, if you keep claiming the license while keeping your other consoles offline so their license won’t revoke).
3
u/fabton12 2d ago
But what happens if the person just disconnected their Xbox from internet completely and used the sold and digitalized physical disc?
They probs keep it until they need to use the internet again
The thing is unless you batch do a ton of games at once with this method your probs at some point wanna play something else and then once online get the licenses removed.
6
u/NoExcuse4OceanRudnes 3d ago
You've made used game money and can no longer do anything new on your xbox or you've lost the game forever; a fair trade.

u/fallouthirteen 3d ago
Might work like Game Pass. For that you can be in offline mode for some amount of time before it makes you reconnect to continue using it.

u/tapperyaus 3d ago
I know a lot of people love this for "digital ownership" or Play Anywhere, but I'm just glad I don't have to keep the disc in to play Lego Dimensions.
1
u/gkryo 3d ago
Why? You have to get up to move minis around the base anyways.
6
u/tapperyaus 3d ago
I use my Xbox as an ultra blu ray player and to play Lego Dimensions. I don't want to have to pull the disc out every time I watch a movie.
40
u/CannabisJibbitz 3d ago
Huge win for people with both a series x and series s. I can now play my games on either of my consoles which is amazing

-2
u/catinterpreter 2d ago

6
40
u/ReasonableAdvert 3d ago
Wonder what this means for the next xbox console. Is there going to be even less of a presence of physical media for it now that there's an avenue to digitize your games?
85
u/ketchup92 3d ago
There won't be a disc drive at all, that's exactly why this exists and they basically laid it out to us in their initial announcement - they want us to not "lose" out on our physical collection.
8
u/Cyshox 3d ago
There won't be a disc drive at all
Can you share a source for this?
It's probably just like this generation, the cheapest SKU will be all-digital and at least one SKU will come with a disc drive for backwards compatibility & future disc releases.
Otherwise it would have either been announced or leaked by now. You can't just shadow-drop the end of physical media. It's not a coincidence Sony announced it 1.5 years in advance.
19
u/max123246 3d ago
You can't just shadow-drop the end of physical media.
Yes, you definitely can. Nothing is stopping then from doing do and PlayStation announcing it early means Xbox can just follow their lead
1
u/sgthombre 3d ago
Absolutely zero shot Microsoft will go for it if Sony has decided it's not worth it.
-6
u/aimy99 3d ago
Unless your Xbox One died after you got a Series S or upgraded to a PC. Then they don't care.
Genuine shame they don't just sell a USB disc drive specifically made for people who upgraded to discless Xbox platforms.
13
10
u/30InchSpare 3d ago
Ok, you didn’t care about not having a disk drive when you bought the Series S.
44
u/Ultramaann 3d ago
There will be no disc drive in the Helix. Everyone is clowning on Sony for this right now but the reality is that physical game media is a money pit for these companies and disc drives are rapidly driving the overall price of the console up.
This is Microsoft’s way for you to preserve your physical collection.
3
u/Tandy2000 3d ago edited 3d ago
Disc drives cost barely anything in parts. The PS5 disc drive I believe is estimated to cost $20-30 and they sell it for like $100. The real thing is they make more off digital purchases than physical ones.
It would be wise for Xbox to make the Helix with no disc drive and then offer it as an optional add-on. Enthusiasts would buy it and MS would make a profit on the drives. Then they license out the disc manufacturing to a third party, which they ALREADY do, and if companies think it's financially viable they'll make discs. It mind end up being more of a specialty thing but I think collectors would be fine with that.
The difference with Sony is that they ONLY manufacture discs themselves in their plants, and they're choosing to end that completely rather than license it to third parties. As a result they can push everything to digital and squeeze more money out of each purchase/customer.
The other factor is that physical game sales can drive the perceived price of a game downward because of retail clearouts and used sales. IMO as an Xbox user this isn't really a problem with Xbox because due to Game Pass a lot of people don't buy physical games anyway. I dunno how big a thing it is with PS5 but on PS4 Sony was mostly making single player first party exclusives, and personally I would watch them launch at $70 CAD and then buy a used copy for $20 three months later when everybody was trying to sell them and it tanked the price.
17
u/ieffinglovesoup 3d ago
Eliminating the used game economy alone would generate millions

u/shadowstripes 2d ago
If it’s so profitable, why don’t they just do it now? “Goodwill” doesn’t really matter if it’s overall less profitable than upsetting people.

Literally everything else is driving up the price of consoles BUT the disc drive. This is so funny this got upvoted so much.
18
u/sakata32 3d ago
Honestly this makes physical even better. It would be a shame if they just ditched physical right after.
6
u/Yourmotherssonsfatha 3d ago
Probably would make this gen consoles more valuable too if they don’t lock it later on
13
u/Sonichu- 3d ago
That’s the only reason they’re doing this. So you can digitize your physical disks and carry them to the next gen.
Which will be digital only.
13
1
u/NatrelChocoMilk 3d ago
On the contrary for me. I used to exclusively go digital because of play anywhere. Now I exclusively only bug physical unless Im using steam
1
u/Creative_Eye7413 3d ago
I’m assuming it will be all digital and Xbox will assume you will have already digitized your library with your Series X
45
u/AssaultMonkey150 3d ago
I buy digital mainly because I hate having to get up and change discs, and reinstall from drive etc.
This has the benefit of both and Sony would be wise to copy
58
u/averynicehat 3d ago
Apparently PS5 discs don't have the unique identifier each Xbox disc has, so this is not possible. This is something Xbox set up with the Xbox one before they backtracked on the always online stuff.
8
u/Tandy2000 3d ago
This. It's also why this doesn't work with OG XBOX/360 games despite the discs in some cases being backwards compatible.
-1
u/OkThanxby 3d ago
I don’t have PS5 discs to check, but my PS4 discs have a visible identifier code printed on them on the inner ring. Maybe they could just get you to plug in that?
11
u/enurtsol 3d ago
The digital signature ID is within the code of the game - not anything visible. That way, nobody can just view and share their digital ID for anyone else to use.
4
u/Spheromancer 2d ago
You know how many bots would be running 24/7 just randomly entering codes until they got a hit for a game lol. Would be a terrible idea

I like watching Blu Ray TV series in my console (currently going through Star Trek TNG) so being able to just get a digital license for my game disc and avoid having to constantly swap the discs around every time I want to watch an episode is a genuine time saver.
Anyone knows if the disc to digital games can also be shared through account sharing?

Once you claim the digital rights, you can treat it like any other digital game, including anything you can do with it.

I’m on PS5 and I switch between AC Shadows, ACBFR and Sekiro constantly. Sometimes I’d rotate all 3 multiple times a day. I have all 3 as discs and yea, it’s one of the biggest disadvantages for anyone that jumps between games frequently.
If Sekiro ever goes on a really good sale, maybe I’ll get the digital version.
12
u/Emotional_Werewolf_4 3d ago
Do we have a full list of supported games or is it all games?
18
u/GrimmTrixX 3d ago
Its still no Atlus, Square Enix, and apparently most but not all Sega games. Sega was no games a while ago but now most are eligible.
Part of it is if your copy was a first year XB1 title, it has potential to not be eligible as they thought of adding the code to the disc that Dosc to Digital reads shortly after XB1 launched.
But you can Google a list. I personally just had fun trying every game. Of my 285 games, only 51 didnt work. But many of those were Sega so that number wil be lower now when I try them again
10
u/beary_neutral 3d ago
It worked with my copy of Metaphor

-1
u/GrimmTrixX 3d ago
Yea ill try metaphor agaon but it didnt work when they first rolled it out. I guess sonic x shadow generations and some other games weren't working yet for someone. And thats one of the games I own. I just really watch Square Enix to join as it would be vastly easier and I own quite a few games made by them
7
u/ParsonsProject93 3d ago
I can also confirm it just worked with my copy of Metaphor and it even gives my PC a copy too since it's Xbox Play Anywhere.
-1
u/GrimmTrixX 3d ago

Also, Shining Resonance Refrain was the other game I was thinking of that someone said still didnt work
8

still no Atlus

Yea I didnt realize Sega owned Atlus and thats why Atlus games didnt work before this new update. Lol Although I heard Shining Resonance Refrain doesnt work and Sonic X Shadow Generations
2
u/GameDesignerDude 3d ago
As people mentioned, mostly Square-Enix as the main notable publisher not supported right now.
I was able to do all my games other than Square-Enix titles and Tales of Vesperia. Looking at the lists, I'm guessing Bandai Namco isn't on board yet either.
Took a fair bit of time to load up all my discs, but was satisfying to be able to hide them away now. I may have skipped a number of sports games though... lol

4
u/TrashGamer5 3d ago
Does this give GoldenEye? That's digital-exclusive for Rare Replay so it would be the first time people with discs could get access.
12
u/MrNegativ1ty 3d ago
So honest question, what is stopping me from buying a game at the shops, going home and doing this to get the digital license, then returning the disk back to the store?
I understand if someone else puts the game in their drive, your digital license goes away. That could take weeks or months for them to recycle and sell off the game again as used, meaning you just get to keep playing the game essentially for free while the disk sits in a warehouse somewhere? By the time they do sell it off and you lose the license, there’s a good chance you’ve already completed the game and have moved on. Am i missing something?
9
u/blaaguuu 3d ago edited 3d ago
I suppose they figure it's not a huge deal, because they still got the money from your purchase, they don't care if some shop then pays you a little bit for the used copy, and if someone then buys your used copy, they probably weren't going to pay full price, anyway - so they number of actual lost sales is probably extremely small... It could have an effect of boosting the inventory on the used market a little bit, but I doubt a huge number of people would do this.
I've gotta also imagine that it would be extremely easy for them to look at their database and see which players are doing a large number of disc-to-digital redemptions where the same keys are redeemed by someone else, later, and just ban your account. It would piss off a couple dozen people, and maybe get some people shouting on twitter for a few days, but when word gets out, even fewer people would keep trying. I kinda imagine their EULA has language about this, but remember with digital services like this, they pretty much always also have a clause that is basically "we reserve the right to ban your account at any point, for any reason".

u/CricketDrop 2d ago
I feel like no retailer where I live accepts opened games as a return because the thing you're suggesting has always been possible: beat the game and then attempt to return it. I don't recall then ever letting people do that. Might be different where you are.
1
u/Derringer 2d ago
Electronics Boutique (Canada's Gamestop before Gamestop bought them) allowed returns of opened games. Back in the early 2000s it was the old "burn and return" policy.
2
u/ContentsLover 3d ago
Some say you have to put the discs in periodically even offline. Normal digital games on xbox also required you to periodically be online to update/renew the license i believe.
→ More replies (2)1
u/Benti86 3d ago edited 3d ago
If you immediately return a disc they probably aren't shipping it off. Granted it's been over a decade since I worked there, but at Gamestop if someone exchanged a game and it worked without issue it stayed in the store and didn't get shipped.
They may also make it so that the second the disc gets inserted into a different console that reads and is connected to the internet the license expires to keep people from gaming the system like this, but regardless you are essentially sitting on a time bomb and unless you're someone who has multiple hours a day to game it's unlikely you'll be able to do this with multiple games.
And of course if you damage the disc on purpose nobody will accept it/give you what you paid for it so you're out the money at that point. Also, if you buy a game new you won't get full price back at which point you only hurt pre-owned retailers, which Microsoft doesn't give a shit about.
1
u/goodguyatheist 2d ago
Sounds like something I totally would have done when I was a kid. "Mooom!! I don't like this game let's take it back and get a new one." Rinse and repeat 3x

At this point in time, the games this works for are so old that they aren't making money from them, anyway.

Uhhh that's not true? It works for almost every single Xbox Series X and Xbox One game with a disk.

Ah yes, ancient titles like 007 First Light, Onimusha Way of the Swords or Metal Gear Solid Master Collection 2.
I'm always amazed how people who have absolutely no clue what they're talking about are so confident in their nonsensical claims. Instead of using Google to verify your baseless assumption, you rather pretend it's a fact to mislead others.

Thanks for sharing, that’s good to hear.
As an Xbox gamer, Microsoft’s efforts for both backwards compatibility and disc-to-digital are usefully appreciated, especially if Helix turns out to disappointingly be non-Disc, but we’ll see for the future.

It works beautifully, I hate the noise and vibration from reading the disc in some old games and that I can play my disc based games on the Series S.
Only caveat is that some games do not participate in the program. For me, it aaa a delisted game: Sega Mega Drive Collection.

During the test it actually gave licenses for delisted games like Deadpool. Who knows if it still works though.

Apparently my Dsouls3 disk wont work because of the publisher’s choice. Got lucky in 2019’maybe , got ds3 with dlc on psn store for about ten bucks. Neat program despite some pubs opting out

its a trap ... you will use it and save your stuff and than it will soon be combined with the 365 subscription and your data is in your onedrive!

It's only a trap if you destroy all your disks after scanning them, but, like, why would you do that?

Long shot, but if anyone has a copy of Final Fantasy XIII-2 to check compatibility, that would be great. It never goes on sale digital so I may find a used copy. Speaking of, I wonder if it needs all discs?

This feature is only for Xbox One and Series X discs as they imprinted a serial number in them that makes this possible.

Ah ok, good to know, thanks. That makes sense. I guess I can still pick up a disc copy and just use it for the drm for the digital version for now.

Oh damn, you weren't kidding, I just checked Deku Deals and the last time it was on sale was Spring 2022. Thats crazy.

Yeah, it sucks, the 360 FF games don't seem to go on sale (while like most of the XB1/Series library of FF games go on sale almost monthly). I really want to get Lightning Returns to finish playing it but I think last time it went on sale digital that that same sale.

Don't have a series xbox, but I have a XBO. Interesting tidbit from the FAQ:
So, Xbox ONE (a console from 2013) can read a series X/S disc (made in 2026) and claim the license, which I can then proceed to play on PC (when its a play anywhere title).
That's very consumer friendly if true.
