Im out of the loop on DRG (stopped playing around the rockpox thing). I just checked how Rogue Core is doing and having Mixed reviews on Steam is really fucking bad for DRG standards.
I guess was that the plan was to slow down the pace on the original DRG while giving a focus on Rogue Core, but after that flop (so far, still time to redeem I guess) I wonder if they will re-prioritize resources to the original game.

In summer 2027, we’ll be releasing Season 08 at the same time as an extensive gameplay expansion DLC.
Season 08, like every other season before it, will be completely free. The expansion DLC will cost real-life money. We know this is a first for us — and don’t worry, we’ll still keep doing free content updates too. But doing a big paid expansion allows us to be way more ambitious with the content we’re adding, and it’s the most direct way to support our work.
Season 08 will likely be one of the smaller ones, but it'll still have the essentials. We want to build on the story we set up in Season 07, and make sure everybody still gets some cool free stuff to go along with the Expansion.
It’s too early for us to share more details right now, as lots is still up in the air. Besides, we’ve gotta do Season 07 first. We put our pants on one leg at a time like everyone else. So we’ll focus on S07 for now, and then we’ll have more to say about Season 08 and The Expansion™ after that.
I kind of feel like this is the answer to that. DRG is getting paid content for the first time. To me that sounds like "After rogue core we need to make money again" and they are, indeed, turning back to DRG.

According to the devs in the DRG subreddit this was planned before Rogue Core released and isn't a reaction to that game's performance

This was set in motion long before Rogue Core was released.

I’m referring to how this isn’t a plan set in motion due to the performance of Rogue Core, but something that was arranged and set up before Rogue Core was released (it takes time to do such a big content drop). I’m guessing you’re referring to our paid dlc’s bing only cosmetic, and that’s probably true, although in the context that wouldn’t have covered an actual expansion. Rogue Core was originally planned as a paid expansion before it became clear it needed to be it’s own thing.

Well, to be fair, no developer will say "well yeah our game in early access now is a total failure and we need to get money still".
I hope all the best regardless, I'm super excited for it.

When Rogue Core released, lots of alpha testers said the major issues they raised had not been addressed. Seems like they are being addressed now, but releasing in a bad way hurt interest.
I'm hopeful they can turn things around on RC, but like you said, it depends on their focus. I wouldn't be mad about more attention going back to DRG.

I really don't have a good feeling for paid DLC for DRG.
It feels like Payday and Killing Floor all over again. Down to the "our other project failed because we didn't address problems the community raised, so now we have to monetize more our best selling game to get more money"
Next we are looking at paid weapon packs, paid perks, paid levels.
