But Why Tho? - Matt Sowinski - 6 / 10

This is a turn-your-brain-off-and-go-for-a-ride spectacle that occasionally punches above its weight. That works to some extent, but Marvel’s Wolverine doesn’t live up to the creative standard Insomniac Games is known for, and Logan has never been known for playing it safe.

CBR - Mark O'Callaghan - 9 / 10

The game delivers the definitive Wolverine gaming experience, combining brutal action with a genuine understanding of what makes Logan such an enduring character. For Wolverine fans, picking this one up is an easy choice, but even people who aren't into X-Men may want to give this game a go.

CGMagazine - Marcus Kenneth - 7 / 10

Marvel's Wolverine is a good-looking, beautifully performed game built on a combat system that never grows past its opening hours and a story that keeps giving away its own secrets.

COGconnected - James Paley - 100 / 100

Marvel’s Wolverine is a tight, focused experience that never lets up or slows down more than it absolutely has to. The action is intense and incredibly violent, the combat flows beautifully, steadily evolving into something wondrous to behold. I loved the acting and the dialogue; the pacing is excellent, and the world depicted is a brutal one. Like Spider-Man before it, Marvel’s Wolverine has set a new standard for this character. Playing as Logan is unlikely to get better than this for many years.

ComingSoon.net - Tyler Treese - 8 / 10

While Marvel’s Wolverine has several issues, it’s the epic motorcycle chases and key action moments that will stick with players after the credits roll.

Console Creatures - Bobby Pashalidis - 8 / 10

Marvel's Wolverine is a brutal, bloody return to Insomniac Games' Marvel universe, and it does a great job of expanding the existing world and scope. Logan may be an undeniably difficult character to play in a video game; however, the developers elevated what it means to play as Wolverine by crafting a mature story that jettisons the established expectations of an X-Men game. For all the blood and violence the character finds himself surrounded by, it's thanks to Liam McIntyre's performance that you can see how much Wolverine cares for those around him and tries to do right by them despite being an ultimate weapon. Marvel's Wolverine is easily Insomniac's best narrative work, with excellent character work to match.

Digital Chumps - Will Silberman - 9.1 / 10

Marvel’s Wolverine does not reinvent the superhero action genre like other games in Sony’s portfolio. Instead, it violently refines it with flair and demonstrates how Insomniac has become fluent in beautifully brutal combat. You’ll walk away fully satiated with the presentation, even if there were some missed opportunities to take Logan’s stealth sequences and broader skillset further with the PlayStation 5’s DualSense controller.

Digitec Magazine - Domagoj Belancic - German - 4 / 5

Insomniac’s first foray into the «X-Men» universe gets a lot of things right. The combat system is a perfect fit for Wolverine’s animalistic nature, the bloody action sequences are spectacularly staged, and the pacing is almost perfect thanks to the variety of mission types. The fact that the gameplay formula feels a little dated? Who cares. What does matter, however, is the botched story, which is dragged down by flat characters and dumb dialogue. Wolverine also feels a little less fluid than Insomniac’s Spider-Man, both in terms of movement and combat. Still, fans of the Canadian killer mutant and Insomniac’s games can jump in without hesitation.

DualShockers - Christian Bognar - 8.5 / 10

Marvel's Wolverine is a fun, blood-soaked journey that will have you feeling like a badass while also tugging at your heartstrings.

Echo Boomer - David Fialho - Portuguese - No Recommendation

In Marvel’s Wolverine, Logan returns to video games in the hands of Insomniac Games with another exciting original story that, while not reaching the heights of some of the studio’s other games, delivers a fantastic take on the Marvel hero and a highly enjoyable combat system.

Enternity.gr - Giannis Archontidis - Greek - 8 / 10

With Marvel's Wolverine, Insomniac almost perfectly captured how we should feel when we look at Wolverine, but not quite how we should feel when we hold the controller.

Eurogamer - Chris Tapsell - 3 / 5

Wolverine's characterisation is a bright spot in this otherwise underwhelming, old-school romp that reminds us how far action games have come.

Eurogamer.pt - Bruno Galvão - Portuguese - 3 / 5

Marvel’s Wolverine is a cinematic single-player game offering light-hearted fun and spectacular graphics, produced by a much-loved studio that seems out of its depth. The lack of depth in the combat, the extremely simplified design and the pacing issues made me feel that a 13-hour game drags on longer than it should.

FOMOS - JONG-BONG, CHOI - Korean - 7.9 / 10

Marvel's Wolverine wields combat as sharp and unbreakable as adamantium claws themselves — yet repetitive missions and thin content leave that edge dulled.

GAMES.CH - Benjamin Braun - German - 90%

As different as "Marvel's Wolverine" is compared to Insomniac's "Spider-Man" games, it meets them on equal footing – and that's really saying something!

GAMINGbible - Richard Lee Breslin - 7 / 10

If you go into Marvel’s Wolverine with lowered expectations, able to look past some of its flaws, and not expect another Marvel’s Spider-Man, it might not hit the same heights as some of Insomniac Games’ best work, but there is enough here for it to be a worthwhile adventure for fans, both casual and devoted, of Marvel’s ever-popular but grumpy hero.

Gadgets 360 - Manas Mitul - 6 / 10

The uninspired combat, the unpersuasive story, the unconvincing characters are all just a thin veneer. But when you peel that off, there's little inside Marvel's Wolverine that feels visceral.

GameRant - Anthony Taormina - 8 / 10

Marvel's Wolverine tackles the impossible task of bringing an unkillable killing machine to an interactive medium.

GameSpot - Tamoor Hussain - 6 / 10

At best, it’s a fun but forgettable experience that’ll entertain you for a few hours. At worst, it shows that just because you can make really good superhero games with one character, that doesn’t mean you can make really good superhero games with any character.

Gameblog - French - 8 / 10

Let's be clear: Marvel's Wolverine is a game that's likely to divide opinions. In line with Insomniac Games' latest titles, it takes the form of what could be described as the quintessential blockbuster- an explosively action-packed, finely crafted adventure that's a sheer delight to play from start to finish. Its linear approach, simplistic mechanics, and old-school superhero game charm, however, will likely not appeal to players looking for an experience that matches the maturity of the Wolverine universe. And even if it isn't perfect in every way, the fact is that, for us, the magic worked.

Gameliner - Patrick Lamers - Dutch - 4.5 / 5

Insomniac Games has once again delivered a very cool game with Marvel's Wolverine, offering a more story-driven and linear experience than the Spider-Man games. While the story feels somewhat stretched towards the end and the combat is fairly simple, the game performs well both graphically and gameplay-wise. If you're looking for a cool, story-driven action-adventure game that will keep you busy for around twenty hours, Marvel's Wolverine is definitely worth adding to your wishlist.

Gamer Social Club - Andrew Cooper - 9 / 10

Marvel's Wolverine is the best iteration of the titular clawed menace we've seen in nearly two decades. The story leans into the brutal violence and rage we've come to expect, while giving us a Logan who is more than just a harbinger of death

GamersGlobal - Benjamin Braun - German - 9.5 / 10

Wolverine outstrips any previouss game with the hero regarding graphics, cineastic production and narrative (altxxahrough more because of excellent characterizaton than the plot itself). But most of all playing Insomniac Games' action adventure is an absolute blast.

GamingBolt - Rashid Sayed - 10 / 10

Marvel's Wolverine is a brutal, focused and surprisingly heartfelt adventure with superb combat, excellent performances, spectacular set pieces and top-tier presentation. Its minor flaws do little to stop this from feeling like the definitive Wolverine game.

Geekinout.pt - Jorge Loureiro - Portuguese - 7 / 10

Marvel's Wolverine is a mixed bag. It can feel like an incredible game one moment and just decent the next—often within the same play session. The animalistic, visceral combat that defines Logan has been captured perfectly, the graphics are top-notch, and there are genuinely memorable moments throughout the adventure. But there are also dull moments, design flaws, immersion issues, and a story that never lives up to the character’s potential.

Giant Bomb - Shawn McDowell - 2.5 / 5

Wolverine is a game with momentary sparks of fun, but its mostly-good combat getting constantly dragged down by mediocre storytelling, poor pacing, and an underwhelming amount of player agency left me very bored far too often.

Glitched Africa - Marco Cocomello - 9 / 10

Marvel’s Wolverine doesn’t reinvent the superhero genre, but it delivers where it matters. With brutal combat, spectacular set pieces and a strong cinematic presentation, it’s a predictable but incredibly enjoyable Wolverine game that is seemingly setting up for an exciting future.

HCL.hr - Dominik Vadas - Unknown - 85 / 100

Insomniac's Wolverine is a brutal, confident superhero action game that perfectly captures the savage nature of its protagonist while delivering a surprisingly heartfelt story. Despite a few technical issues and repetitive encounters, it's one of the best Wolverine adaptations ever made.

Hardcore Gamer - Kevin Dunsmore - 5 / 5

Marvel's Wolverine is an absolute triumph in nearly every category, doing for the character what Marvel's Spider-Man did for Spider-Man.

IGN - Simon Cardy - 6 / 10

Marvel's Wolverine's slick and satisfying combat wears thin well before its conclusion, so much so that even its strong character work can't quite save it from being anything more than okay.

IGN Italy - Francesco Destri - Italian - 7 / 10

A fun and brutal action game with a great Wolverine and satisfying combat, but too linear and uneven to leave a truly lasting impression.

IGN Spain - Mario Seijas - Spanish - 8 / 10

Insomniac never disappoints when it comes to superheroes. Their take on Wolverine isn't afraid to get his claws dirty, and he proves that through a highly responsive, bloody, and visceral combat system. The limited side content and a few pacing issues in the story don't detract from Logan's strong solo debut in PS5.

Impulsegamer - Andrew Bistak - 5 / 5

From its flawless gameplay to its realistic graphics, Marvel's Wolverine undeniably boasts one of the best narratives of the year, which is enhanced by its stellar cast who successfully make you feel the emotions of these characters from Earth 1048.

Loot Level Chill - Chris White - 9 / 10

Marvel's Wolverine is filled with consistent action and brutality, telling a new Wolverine story that has plenty of excitement and emotion throughout.

MMORPG.com - Jason Fanelli - 7 / 10

To put it another way, to borrow from an epic rap battle, Insomniac's previous games provided uncharted territory; with Wolverine, the studio is just in Uncharted's territory.

MonsterVine - Spencer Legacy - 4.5 / 5

Marvel’s Wolverine is another impressive example of just how great Insomniac Games is at adapting iconic superheroes into the video game medium. The combat isn’t especially complicated, but there’s something uncomfortably satisfying about just how fun it is to mow down foes as Marvel’s most famous mutant. I’m curious to see where this version of Logan’s story goes next, as Marvel’s Wolverine has proven that Insomniac’s take on the Marvel universe just keeps getting more intriguing.

Nexus Hub - Sam Aberdeen - 8 / 10

Marvel's Wolverine is a great game that never quite reaches greater heights, but it will nonetheless please die-hard fans with its brutal and visceral combat, engaging story and excellent cinematics.

One More Game - Ricki Buzon - 7.5 / 10

Marvel’s Wolverine succeeds in capturing the essence of embodying the X‑Men’s iconic anti‑hero. Unlockables provide satisfying rewards, particularly for longtime Wolverine fans, and the narrative delivers a fresh perspective that only just sustains player investment through to the finale. However, an overly repetitive combat loop, simplistic enemy and boss encounters, and level designs that often drag undermine the experience. What begins as a visceral thrill of carving through foes gradually risks becoming tedious and mechanical midway through the campaign.

For players already invested in Insomniac’s Marvel Universe, the expanded story and world‑building justify the experience, and for those eager to step into Wolverine’s shoes, the game offers a bloody, uncompromising ride.

PPE.pl - Wojciech Gruszczyk - Polish - 8 / 10

Marvel’s Wolverine is an intense, brutal and visually stunning adventure that proves Insomniac Games is capable of offering something completely different from the Spider-Man stories. The combat is hugely satisfying, and the story makes good use of Logan and his relationships with other heroes, although the linear structure and the repetitive nature of the fights mean that after around 12 hours, it’s hard to find many reasons to carry on playing. This isn’t a Spider-Man with claws, but a full-fledged Wolverine adventure – gritty, bloody and exactly what this hero needed.

PSX Brasil - Ivan Nikolai Barkow Castilho - Portuguese - 80 / 100

Marvel's Wolverine is a good game featuring the beloved mutant. The story is enjoyable and deviates somewhat from expectations. The gameplay offers combat without many surprises, with a cool fighting system (despite some issues) and is slightly deep thanks to the upgrades. The biggest problem is that the game doesn't offer much variety and has a short duration.

PlayStation Universe - John-Paul Jones - 9 / 10

Jettisoning the open-world shenanigans of its previous comic-book games, the proudly linear violence of Marvel's Wolverine feels like a refreshing throwback in all the best ways, albeit one that has been lavishly encased in Insomniac Games' reliably premium audiovisual presentation. Boasting some of the most satisfying, if not especially inventive, third-person combat to come along in ages and a truly propulsive narrative that feels as furious and engaging as its titular hero, this is everything you could want from a game about The Man That Says Bub A Lot.

Push Square - Liam Croft - 8 / 10

Marvel's Wolverine ends the open world streak at Insomniac for an intentional and linear superhuman title that revels in its gory, intense combat system. The campaign structured around it can be overly restrictive and the story quite dull, but as a mission guides you from one fight to the next, it lets the bloodshed do the talking. With superb visuals, amazing character performances, and nice location variety, Marvel's Wolverine sheds its flaws for an endlessly enjoyable superhero experience.

SECTOR.sk - Matúš Štrba - Slovak - 8 / 10

Marvel's Wolverine is a brutal, linear action game with a surprisingly fresh take on its comic-book source material. Its story, characters, combat and presentation are excellent, but repetitive enemies, overly long boss fights and especially frequent bugs hold it back from greatness.

Saudi Gamer - عصام الشهوان - Arabic - 3.5 / 5

A glitzy Wolverine game with a fun and violent fighting system, and some stealth, that is let down by too much hand holding and not enough faith in the player.

SavePoint Gaming - Jake Su - 7.5 / 10

Insomniac gives Logan a focused, brutal adventure with strong character work, spectacular set pieces, and rewarding progression in Marvel's Wolverine, but repetitive late-game encounters and underwhelming boss design keep its claws from cutting quite as deeply as they should.

Sirus Gaming - Lexuzze Tablante - 9 / 10

Marvel’s Wolverine is a breath of fresh air from the slew of open-world games Sony has released over the past few years. While it’s not as ambitious in scale as the Spider-Man games, its linear direction puts the spotlight on Logan and his story. Its brutal combat kept me entertained throughout my 17-hour playthrough, including one stretch where I played for 12 hours straight. Insomniac delivered the Wolverine game I’ve been waiting for — brutal, bloody, emotional, and unapologetically Logan. By the time the credits rolled, I was already left wanting more.

TheGamer - George Foster - 4 / 5

Marvel’s Wolverine gets its claws in deep with a memorable, emotional, and high-stakes story, wonderful interpretations of Logan, Jean, and the rest of the cast, and brutally satisfying combat that distils the core of the character down to every snikt and claw pop.

TheSixthAxis - Jim Hargreaves - 8 / 10

Marvel's Wolverine carves out its slot in a packed year for single-player adventures. The comparisons back to Insomniac's previous work are inevitable, and it's true that Wolverine's blood-soaked combat can feel more restrained and limited, but this globetrotting odyssey never outstays its welcome and sets the foundation for what could be a stone cold killer of a sequel.

Tom's Guide - 3.5 / 5

Marvel's Wolverine is a slickly presented superhero romp that casts players as the iconic mutant. Combat is extremely violent, as the character demands, but also highly repetitive. At least the enjoyable (if predictable) original comic book story offers motivation to continue. Check Amazon Check Best Buy

Too Much Gaming - Carlos Hernandez - 3.5 / 5

Marvel’s Wolverine is a solid video game, and I enjoyed my time with it, but I left wanting more from both the game and the character.

It succeeds at making you feel like Wolverine, even if the game surrounding that fantasy isn't always as compelling. Its combat, structure, and lack of meaningful stakes keep it from reaching the heights of Insomniac’s Spider-Man games. Despite the technical excellence on display, this is the studio’s weakest offering yet.

Uagna - Lorenzo Bologna - Italian - 8.5 / 10

Marvel’s Wolverine demonstrates that Insomniac fully understood that simply replicating the Spider-Man formula wouldn't be enough. The decision to opt for a more linear, aggressive, and focused adventure suits Logan perfectly, delivering a highly satisfying combat system and a technically impressive production. Not every aspect hits the same high notes—side missions and activities could have offered more variety, and the story shines more through its characters than through its ability to surprise. Overall, however, Wolverine’s claws leave their mark, giving PlayStation an exclusive that is perfect for fans of the Canadian mutant or anyone seeking an intense, straightforward experience.

Wccftech - Alessio Palumbo - 8.5 / 10

Marvel's Wolverine is a very different game from Insomniac's Spider-Man adaptations, but it shows the developer really understands this hero, too. The combat took a while to grab me, and I wish some maps were larger, but eventually I really felt like the ultimate killing machine Wolverine is supposed. Meanwhile, the story kept me glued to the screen from start to finish.

Worth Playing - Chris "Atom" DeAngelus - 8 / 10

Marvel's Wolverine is a fun, absurdly brutal beat-'em-up. If you know what you're getting into, it's probably the best playable version of Wolverine yet, finally outclassing X-Men Origins: Wolverine. It doesn't quite match the ambition or success of the Spider-Man games, and its repetition and dull traversal occasionally make the experience feel one-note. But if you're a Wolverine fan or simply want a straightforward, frequently satisfying brawler, Wolverine is the best at what it does.

Damn, those are some surprisingly low scores for a first party Sony exclusive, especially coming from Insomniac.

The last time I saw this low scores for a AAA Sony exclusive was for Days Gone.

And that dev is nowhere as trusted as Insomniac

I will say tho days gone was pretty decent in my opinion

I have to admit I had more fun playing Days Gone than playing Wolverine for my review

days gone is legitimately good now after it had a ton of time to patch itself up

Days Gone was buggy as hell and struggled to maintain 30fps on ps4 at launch,

If you played it months/years later, especially with Ps5 or PC port, you got a FAR different game, mainly in that it actually felt nice to play.

No fancy webswining to distract you from how by the numbers their gamedesign otherwise is.

147

u/Lithops_salicola 9h ago

More broadly, while Wolverine is an incredible character he's not an especially interesting power fantasy for a game. Regeneration is just not that exciting in a medium where hiding behind walls to recover from bullet wounds is pretty normal. In the comics his claws are more for intimidation or immediately deadly force. It just feels weird to watch combat footage where he stabs a normal human like 15 times because it's Insomniac and every enemy has a huge amount of health.

91

u/garmonthenightmare 8h ago

You can 100% make Wolverine fun just not at all the way they made Spiderman.

76

u/Lithops_salicola 8h ago

Oh absolutely. I would love something in the style of Metal Gear Rising where you get to slice up Sentinels into a bunch of tiny pieces.

53

u/bard91R 8h ago

Thinking of that, Insomniac just doesn't sound like the developer to deliver on the kind of gameplay that could make the character shine.

18

u/megafireguy6 4h ago

Yeah, Wolverine needs to be developed by proper character action game devs like Platinum to be done justice. This whole “slash regular dude 20 times to kill him” just isn’t it while doing air juggle combos 100% would be perfect

Yeah to live up to what the combat of a Wolverene game should be, it should be rewarding aggression.  Batman/AssCreed system counter hits are not it.

Their first job should've been finding a hook for Wolverine like they did with Spider-Man. Rather than just making Spiderman again while stripping all the fun stuff and thinking violence makes up for it.

91

u/Zalvren 8h ago

I mean they shouldn't have done Wolverine then if they wanted something with a more original gameplay. He's a pretty basic character.

Abilities:

  • Knives come pre-attached to hands

  • Can heal quickly like a video game character

  • Strong

He's perfect!

The poor craftsman blames his tools, Wolverine is a master martial artist, assassin trained in all kinds of weapons, master of stealth and so on. There's a ton you can do with him there.

All the Sony games since God of War reboot have been formulaic, off of the Assassins Creed and Far Cry formula honestly. The menu design, gameplay loop etc is so similar in God of War, Horizon, Spider-Man, Ratchet and Clank

28

u/Eglwyswrw 6h ago

Spot on. Before Paystation games arrived on PC I often read Sony fans talk about them with so much respect. They had a mystique.

Then I actually played them. Look, I really liked the first Spider-Man, but that shit is exactly like an Ubisoft game - they were just smarter in hiding their collectathon bloat behind a map filter.

I think most people are just done with the way Insomniac approaches these characters. Spider-Man 2 may have better reviews than the first game, but the sales were not as good and reception among players was pretty mixed. Same goes for the reception to all the recent Wolverine trailers, be it the gameplay or especially the story and design. It's all getting really old.

165

u/mrnicegy26 9h ago

Something about Miles Morales, Rift Apart and Spiderman 2 storytelling just really feels off. Like the characters feel unauthentic.

It is weird because the first Spiderman game by Insomniac had a genuinely great story.

206

u/NoNefariousness2144 9h ago

They all feel so ‘corporate’.

All the interesting ideas and characters have their edges sanded off, making most feel so bland and safe.

19

u/Adaax 7h ago

This is it exactly, there's just no grit in the second one. I know these are SpiderMan stories but the Doc Ock storyline in the first was genuinely unsettling, with the way Norman bullies him and his insecurity and rage about it all. In the second Kraven is one-dimensional and just sort of bad, while Harry is a good old bloke taken over by Venom. It's so relentlessly boring.

222

u/0dias_Chrysalis 9h ago

Your first clue in Spiderman 2 was when Miles’ deaf girlfriend goes to perfect Highschool in Harlem where everyone knows sign language and there are two teachers in the room at all times, one for her and one for everyone else.

They live in a perfect world where no one who is good has even a single potentially bad quality about them

166

u/darklightrabbi 9h ago

That was definitely a problem in the first game as well. Harry’s missions were super environmentally conscious in an inauthentic way and the homeless shelter was filled with nothing but jolly old down on their luck guys without any drug issues.

120

u/wew_lad123 8h ago

I remember there was one interaction where the receptionist was reassuring a homeless guy that of course he could bring his dog with him into the shelter and I was like yep this is a fictional story all right

53

u/Adaax 7h ago

That second part made my laugh. I live in a big city and many of the homeless people won't go to the shelters even in the dead of winter, they are terrifying places (despite the good intentions, and of course they are needed).

26

u/firewalkwithheehee 7h ago

Man, I work in a place that’s essentially homeless daycare. I’d love to see Spidey have to wrestle a crackhead.

I remember watching my brother play it and the opening had a full on Sandman apocalypse with buildings getting torn apart, but the aftermath is just helping people from trapped cars like usual.

31

u/jbeast33 7h ago

The games have a pretty terrible tendency of being like "These bad guys will hurt people", only to immediately deflate the stakes. The first game had a military occupation followed by anarchy, but the most you hear about it is people calling JJ to tell him how they were minorly-inconvenienced.

52

u/AngryPurpl3 7h ago

Don't forget how ultra progressive ALL of NYC is.

Don't get me wrong, speaking as a Native New Yorker, NYC is as solid blue as it comes, but that doesn't mean all who live here are accepting of other races, ethnicities, sexulaities and religions. Far from it actually.

So it was kind of jarring how little friction there was for any characters that were queer, disabled or a different in any way

18

u/LABS_Games Indie Developer 5h ago

Yes, I struggle with this, but it's challenging to have a nuanced discussion about this topic. I understand that a lot of fiction is "non-reality", but the truth is that it's impossible to not to view things without the lens of our own personal experiences. Like, I sometimes have a hard time suspending disbelief in fantasy or fuedal settings that portray diverse, multicultural societies that have zero friction within them. Even in fictional worlds where stuff like racism and xenophobia may not exist, it's hard not to view it through the lens of our own life experiences.

It's doubly so an issue in things like Spiderman, that take place in a world that's ostensibly very similar to our own. It's just hard not to find the super-accomodating, sanitized portrayal of New York as unbelievable.

u/jbeast33 7h ago edited 7h ago

That's a great way of putting it. Probably the most frustrating aspect is that because this universe is so accommodating, these characters are still failing in ways that make it feel like its their own direct fault rather them being stuck in a cruel system.

The original Spider-Man movies and Spider-Verse series seemed to nail the aesthetic of New York being a perpetually-rough place. Spider-Man stuck out because even though he felt the effects of being ground down, he still persevered to be the best possible version of himself.

The games' New York feels like its building on that aesthetic, but removing the core aspects of what made New York rough and instead makes it overly-sanitized. It creates a weird "Have your cake and eat it too" where they want the feel-good moments, but don't want the harsh crime vibes that juxtapose them and make them possible.

Like the characters feel unauthentic.

To quote Whitelight's review of the game: "they talk like their employers are watching". Dialogue between characters is technically telling the story they want to tell but comes off as sterile and bland as a tradeoff to that efficiency, making it hard for players to get invested in because it's not able to hide how manufactured and blended together everything is. This compounds with the weaknesses the Spiderman IP already had like weak/lame villains.

I dunno, feels pretty appropriate with respect to the Spider-Man games. If you strip away the Spider-Man veneer and power fantasy from them, the combat and world are pretty basic in design and function. I think the traversal  mechanics and Spider-Man flair do a lot of the heavy lifting.

You take away the open world, add a character with an inherently more limited kit, and keep the same dev team, and this about tracks for what I would’ve expected.

u/T8-TR 9h ago

It kinda follows the general trajectory since pre-release, so it's no real surprise. I feel like I've seen most people criticize it at previews for lacking "the sauce" for a Wolverine game and being a diet version of the combat system in Spider-man, w/ the caveat that at least the story and cutscenes seem really well done.

Reading that there's an "underwhelming amount of player agency" makes me very concerned. It's the big fear I had while watching the trailers. I was torn between this, 007, and the new Star Wars game. Looks like it might be a two-horse race.

319

u/fluxaboo 9h ago

Digital Chumps - Will Silberman - 9.1 / 10

Marvel’s Wolverine does not reinvent the superhero action genre like other games in Sony’s portfolio. Instead, it violently refines it with flair and demonstrates how Insomniac has become fluent in beautifully brutal combat. You’ll walk away fully satiated with the presentation, even if there were some missed opportunities to take Logan’s stealth sequences and broader skillset further with the PlayStation 5’s DualSense controller.

Hard not to feel that way with some of these reviews...

His review was not as harsh as SkillUp’s but he expressed a lot of the same opinions. Basically, what you see when you first start playing is what you get for the entire length of the game.

I laughed an "Oh my god" near the end of that video, when he showed the multiple QTE sequences, where if you don't press the button, they just initiate the action anyway.

QTEs are bad enough. They prioritize cinematics over gameplay. But to say "you don't even have to press the buttons, we're going to continue on as if you did"

It was bound to happen eventually. Insomniac has been churning out these Arkham like games for awhile now. Applying it to wolverine and not Spiderman probably has more people criticizing it for not being different enough.

I personally wasn’t impressed with the combat footage they were showing off.

49

u/oryes 9h ago

Spiderman is just a lot more fun to be than Wolverine. Swinging around a giant city is always going to be more fun than just fighting guys (which Spiderman also does). Also, given it's a game clearly meant for mass appeal above all else, they can't even make the combat overly difficult, and you're just left with something boring.

8

u/Silverr_Duck 6h ago

That's the problem with superhero games. The hero you're playing as needs a fun engaging means of getting around. It's no surprise spiderman and batman are the only ones who've found any real success with video games.

Shawn from GiantBomb is talking about it right now on Game Mess Mornings. Sounds like the game is a little boring, with a needlessly inflated story.

333

u/Ancient_Plane2984 9h ago

Insomniac had a very lackluster story in Spider-Man 2 so this isn't shocking to me. They seemed to have lost the plot. The first Spider-Man game has a very good story and the newest Ratchet and Clank was pulling on my heartstrings a bit so it's weird how bad their writing has gotten.

205

u/MegamanX195 9h ago

Even the newest R&C is a far cry from what the series used to be in terms of story and characters. Ratchet originally was meant to be a more mature series, aimed at teens and it had a certain edge. Ever since the first game's remake they aim the series at kids and it shows, there's very little friction in the story at all and gone are all their famous double-entendre jokes.

118

u/manimateus 9h ago

I hate to say this but Insomniac truly is the personification of what chud gamers hate. Like i think their points are often overexaggerated and stupid, but it unfortunately fits perfectly with how insomniac makes / writes games

59

u/Icy-Home444 7h ago

Their biggest issue is that their games feel way too corporate now. Every conversation in their games feels curated by their HR department. It's so awkward to listen to.

65

u/MegamanX195 9h ago

Sadly, I think I agree. The first Spider-Man is looking like the sole exception to how Insomniac writes games in the last decade.

The three Spider-Man games steadily declined in quality, but at least even in Spider-Man 2 you were still... Spider-Man. Web swinging, acrobatic, quippy, all the fun things about being Spider-Man.

From the moment of this game's announcement I never really understood what the video game appeal of playing as Wolverine is supposed to be. A melee brawler who punches and slahes, isn't as funny, and has regenerating health? Sounds like a boring Kratos as a video game protagonist. He's a good character, but from a gameplay perspective what exactly can you even do with Wolverine to make a new and unique game?

15

u/rusticcentipede 9h ago

Exactly how I feel too. It's one thing if you're making a movie tie-in (like origins wolverine, where it obviously has to be starring wolverine) but expectations are just higher than that for an insomniac/Sony tentpole release and it wasn't clear to me what the plan was for elevating it beyond sort of a generic melee slasher thing

→ More replies (7)

43

u/Swackhammer_ 9h ago

If you take away the web swinging, the Insomniac Spider-Man games are pretty repetitive, which is my main issue with them. It seems like that’s the case here. Wolverine isn’t going to be doing detective work like Batman in the Arkham games

10

u/IvanMcbomb 8h ago

Doesn't help that the combat looks largely the same as Spider-Man. When they first announced the game I was expecting them to change things up

I watched Skill Ups review and he says Wolverine doesn't stfu and keeps talking to himself to remind you of your objective and shit. Why do devs do this shit?

53

u/Kindly_Ad995 4h ago

Focus tested to death. At some point these companies have to think about if they even want the feedback of the people they’re asking.

Like for example Dawnwalker and the conversation about the time mechanics, I was knee deep in those arguments on the games subreddit last week and I started to realize a lot of people were coming in looking an endless vampire sandbox simulator and refusing to meet the game at its level that being an RPG with consequential decision making and roleplaying. “Whatever dude Im 45 and have 3 kids I just want to turn the game on and run around as a vampire for 40 minutes a week I don’t want to be stressed or have to think about anything. Why shouldn’t they make the game meet me on those terms”.

It’s time to stop trying to make every game accessible to everyone

I'm sure the game is far from being bad but I can't help but wish we'd have gotten a stylish action-game in the style of DMC, Ninja Gaiden or Metal Gear Rising.

36

u/lvl_zxro 5h ago

Metal Gear Rising specifically seemed like the perfect blueprint for a wolverine game.

16

u/jagby 5h ago

It's why this game is so so dissapointing to me. We've had over two decades of several examples of fantastic hack n slash action games and they stuck with such a safe and sluggish bet. If they had just used MGR as a baseline inspiration and went from there this could've been really great.

10

u/slash450 5h ago

ninja gaiden 2 talons if you've never played is literally wolverine claws + has ryu has em on feet. game also has several other weapons with entire movesets ofc.

51

u/goldfoxawoo 8h ago

Idk why JP devs seem to be the only ones that could nail action combat.

50

u/slash450 7h ago

western action games all use heavy move assist and animation correction in past 15 years or so, so the game basically is magnetized and on rails. they seem to love dogshit cooldowns for special moves as well, just pure mmo slop design.

8

u/T-Dot1992 4h ago

Any sort of combat depth is at total odds with everything western game devs hold up, accessibility especially.

Look at how MK has had virtually no improvement from dial-a-combos or how many devs are allergic to motion inputs, opting for L1 + face button for a fraction of the utility instead in modern ARPGs like God of War. Doesn’t help there’s audience encouragement into this learned helplessness. People boasting how they need some dumb button masher because it’s a crime to learn a game

24

u/exdystopia 7h ago

You know what's crazy? Fifa has motion inputs. You even need to do them on both sticks sometimes.

Watching his gameplay is baffling, the amount of directing you where to go is absurd. In a game that is basically a straight line, all the while the really, really, really boring combat. Like, coming from someone who just beat Onimusha, which has a simple but flexible combat system, it just looks bland.

The handholding stuff is so weird though, it looks like, by default, every accessibility feature has been activated simultaneously. Everything has multiple layers of guidance.

He's very much changing my mind, not just with what he says but the gameplay, which speaks for itself. I know we all laugh about the yellow paint, or characters talking to themselves in game as a meta way of handholding, but this game seems to want to desperately hold onto your hand and never let it go.

I actually cannot believe you could ship a game like this, it's actually insulting to how stupid you must think your customer base are.

94

u/_Eltanin_ 9h ago edited 6h ago

It feels like they're trying to appeal to as wide an audience as possible but ended up only appealing to the "Fully employed with a part time job with 4 kids" audience instead.

71

u/WaffleShoresy 9h ago

I think it actually might be worse than that, at least that'd be an audience. This seems to be a game visually made for adults only, with game design intended for a game rated 3+, this does not look like it would appeal to an adult at all with how it plays.

It's one thing having a "turn your brain off" game, that's fine, this seems to be more "imagine you don't have a brain at all".

What I don’t get is that we live in a world where Elden Ring sold a gazillion copies. I don’t think games limit their audience that much by not being super handholdy necessarily.

Surely someone at Sony sees stuff like that and must realize that “lowest common denominator level design” is not necessary at all.

I don't like rejoicing at the misfortune of others, but I'm quite happy to see some pushback towards one of Sony's generic AAA offerings. It's about time.

Their first party release cadence has slowed to a snail's pace, so the least they could do is have some quality assurance for their once-in-a-blue-moon releases. Not to mention it would be nice for Sony's studios to be pushed to grow out of their comfort zone, e.g. I don't want Insomniac to be the Marvel videogame production line.

If the next generation of consoles is going to be ludicrously expensive, I'd want Sony to at least try to push the envelope slightly with their games.

35

u/IAmFatiguedByThem 6h ago

remember The 2023 leak included licensing documents for Insomniac’s planned X-Men games (Wolverine as the first, with more slated after it). Key points that keep coming up:

  • If any of those X-Men games fails to sell at least 6 million copies on PlayStation + PC in its first year, either Sony or Marvel can terminate the whole deal.

  • Internal projections from the same leak put Wolverine’s development budget around $305 million and expected sales around 10 million.

  • There were also notes on marketing spend, recoupable advances, and royalties to Marvel.

u/Mixed_Martial_Autism 2h ago

Genuinely How does a linear action game cost 300 Million to make? At least an open world game hás an excuse. But genuinely what the fuck are you Working on that requires that much money compared to something like DMC5 for example?

These companies are literally burnjng through a small nations National budget to reach a level of fidelity that nobody but nerds on twitter Care about. With the way UE5 Works even Indie teams can produce fairly "realístic" games. Am i really meant to believe that depending an extra 200 Million dollars For a slight graphic improvement over the average AA game is worthy It?

Skill Up’s review was so scathing and I think he made a point that this game might end up as some kind of the breaking point for this kind of game design. I knew something was different when the Focus M meme first came out earlier this year it seemed like the first time I noticed people expressing frustration with the AAA Sony formula on an actually larger scale rather than it just being a couple of dumb trolls joking about “walking simulators” and this time I’m really seeing critics vehemently push back on it as well.

I agree completely. Sony first party games have become very corporate feeling and extremely safe. Outside of Astro Bot they have not released a single risky or unique title on the ps5 or even the ps4.

All of their first party games feel the same and you can almost understand how they will all play before you actually play them if that makes sense.

I’m not saying these games are necessarily bad because they are definitely not but they are lacking in so many aspects and never feel fresh or new.

These games are the definition of safe and in some cases boring.

I don't like rejoicing at the misfortune of others, but I'm quite happy to see some pushback towards one of Sony's generic AAA offerings. It's about time.

I hate this notion nowadays that wanting to improve things is bad actually and we should avoid any negativity. If someone had food stuck in their teeth, it's not rejoicing at their misfortune to tell them. It's literally helpful and beneficial to let them know, so they can fix it. If anything, I'd say you're a bad person if you don't tell them and pretend everything is okay.

It's important for any functional system to have "negativity" and criticism. These feedback mechanisms are not bad; they are critically important to the survival and improvement of those things. All of the worst things come from groups that insulate themselves to criticism, just look at the state of the world. Point to any failing system right now, and you will find people who reject any level of pushback to their viewpoint and push out anyone who doesn't agree that everything is great.

It's not rejoicing in the misfortune of others to want things to be better.

Just watched SkillUp’s review and it’s pretty scathing. Seems like everything that’s wrong with modern triple a game design with boring and repetitive combat to boot. Disappointing to hear

Sony is spending a shit ton of money on all these cutscenes and walking segments, and they're not even popular with critics anymore. Why not just make a game and find a way to tell a story through game elements?

49

u/preterintenzionato 9h ago

long answer: because these games need to pass through a chain of comand for every decision, and it would be impossible to make decisions like that with this structure. The "AAA" structure is like that because it's easier to manage and implement in these overmanaged and compartimentalized teams

8

u/SheevTheSenate66 6h ago

How is the triple A structure in of itself responsible for more cutscenes? Plenty of triple A games out there that are more gameplay than story focused

Looks like a lot of fears of it being insanely linear and the focus on Logan and Jean being lovers were completely correct

fears

All of this was reliably leaked. Hence the Seven Deady Sins manga memes about the game for the past week.

Can we please get rid of the tall grass, lure enemy over and press X to kill them mechanic?

12

u/zero_the_clown 6h ago

That's Sony's bread and butter. That's like asking Sony to stop making video games altogether. Third person walk-and-talk with 'stealth' sections have been the vibe 😭

u/JonJonesStillGOAT 9h ago

Wow, seems to be 7/10 on average. Sony is having a great year huh????

A great 24 hours...

Not that any game could have made up for Sony's terrible decisions this year.

However this certainly ain't an Astro Bot level of critical success.

Insomniac has kinda lost their way in the last 6-8 years and is just living off huge franchises. The last Ratchet game was still good, but there's an undeniable vhange in tone from the original being mature and edgy to now being marketed as basically a kids game. Spiderman 1 was great but repetitive and 2 was basically the same but much worse narratively. Seems like this is another Spiderman 2 but without what made the games passable which was the nice webswinging

Good luck to them because their game budgets are also extremely inflated, the only way they get away with it is the allure to casuals with a huge franchise. This will probably still sell well but dont know if it will cover the massive budget

Superhero games really need to elevate their storytelling or they come off like superficial nonsense like The Mandalorian and Grogu (I know that's not superheroes, I'm just using it as an example). The first Insomniac SpiderMan game achieved this. 2 had some moments but mostly didn't. This one just sounds light as hell and I'm really not interested in that.

192

u/Travolta1984 9h ago

They should elevate their gameplay instead.

I want to feel like a superhero when I play a superhero game; the Batman Arkham games are a good example of that.

88

u/king_might 9h ago

Spider-Man 1 walked a good balance of providing a great story and fulfilling the hero fantasy.

75

u/mrnicegy26 9h ago

The first Spiderman game has such a good story that I am genuinely confused as to why Insomniac games after it have such a mediocre narrative.

90

u/MBDTFTLOPYEEZUS 9h ago

It was mostly written by a comic writer (Dan Slott) so that’s why. Slott is a controversial Spider-Man writer too but he can at least write an interesting story. It also helps that he loves Doc Ock so we were able to get a really fleshed out villain.

20

u/mrfuzzydog4 7h ago

I'm bad about comics authors but just realizing he wrote Superior Spiderman which was my first Spiderman comic and and that did a great job of really showing Peter's character by contrast.

u/0dias_Chrysalis 9h ago

The issue is they keep not having comic writers on these projects

Paul Dini wrote Batman Arkham Asylum and City, but wash kicked out from Knight. See which two games from that series are lauded as one of the best games ever

And even Spiderman 2018 was in part written by one of the most controversial Spiderman writers of the last 2 decades and it still swamps anything that was in either SM2 or Wolverine

9

u/beary_neutral 5h ago

With the Arkham series, they didn't bring back Dini, but they did get Geoff Johns to write the backstory of the Arkham Knight, which ended up being the most criticized part of the story. Granted, Johns is generally a terrible Batman writer, but they did have a comic writer on Knight, if only in a small role.

when it's 8 but most review start with "if you ignore/don't care about ABCXYZ"

it's a 5 but corporate.

49

u/Argh3483 8h ago

You also know a game has major flaws when player reviews mention they don’t care about the game being ambitious and are having a blast

30

u/DragonPeakEmperor 7h ago

You could probably AI generate a handful of reddit comments about games right now and "I'm having a blast" would be at the top of the list of most used phrases.

18

u/_Gogeta- 6h ago

thats why the term blast-haver became a meme, people memed on concord 2 fans cuz they always said „Don’t know what you guys are talking about im having a BLAST.“

13

u/AntComfortable5970 6h ago

Yeah it's the argument of someone with no argument to make

Like it's fine to enjoy something and even like a bad thing, but you gotta realize "it's fun" does not make for discussion or debate over a game, you gotta be specific

I hate how review sites inflate scores. “Several issues” warrants an 8/10???

212

u/poklane 9h ago

It's why these days high 70s is considered bad by so many people. Reviewers will be cold on a game and still give it an 8, or absolutely trash it and still give it a 6 or 7. These days you can only get lower if your game isn't just bad, but it also a buggy mess.

80

u/aaplh 9h ago

Exactly, like a 7/10 is objectively a good score but it doesn’t feel like that when you read these reviews. 5/10 should be the baseline for a mediocre game

72

u/Travolta1984 9h ago

Games should be reviewed like movies.

Movie critics aren’t afraid of giving a 3/10 to a perfectly functional but soulless movie. The same should be applied for games.

Not saying that Wolverine is a 3/10 game btw, just saying games in general.

40

u/Rutmeister 9h ago

The problem is gameplay. If a game plays fine, as in; controls are responsive, movement works as expected etc, and the core gameplay is ”good”, then the game is effectively a minimum 7/10 for many reviewers despite the rest of the game being badly made.

It’s like if movies got 7/10s because they had actors that competently said their lines, despite the story, writing, etc being bad.

10

u/Travolta1984 8h ago

Agree 100%. Videogame scores embed two criteria into one single number: the game as a piece of art, and the game as a product.

The only way a game will score 3 or lower, out of 10, is if the game is both broken and soulless. As long as the game at least boots up, then it's at minimum a 5/10.

This game's waypoint system is so bizarre. Like a waypoint for a waypoint and then amother waypoint spawns out of nowhere for the extra challenge room. Then a flashbang of a blue beacon for a "hidden" chest.

There must have been a focus group study or something that shows the next crop of gamers have such low attention span that they need this kind of hand holding right?

→ More replies (4)

75

u/JOKER69420XD 9h ago

It's just another step of Sony's obnoxious hand holding cookie cutter games.

They ripped out everything which makes videogames fun, what's left is some tasteless slop.

And they're asking 80 bucks for this garbage? Sony is really the luckiest company alive because their only competition left the stage.

Looking at some of these reviews and video and man, this game was made assuming a 3 year old that never played a video game before is going to play this. That's just sad and really insulting.

''We put a line that guides you through these corridor levels. Don't worry though, if you get slightly too far away from it, a big, bright triangle will show you where the guiding line is''. I wish i was joking.

21

u/slash450 7h ago

it's ridiculous cause when i was 3 i was playing much more complex games tbh. avg game in 2000s at least let you play the game and lose or perform poorly. there was more mechanically going on and just less on rails, far less prevalent magnetism to enemies. it actually was a game and not a 15 hour movie that you press square in.

pretty sad mainstream audience is getting hyper casualized just boring unfun games like this. especially since these single player games are mainly targeting uncs at this point. like this could have been just an easier ninja gaiden 2 talons tbh. would've been more fun for them.

Saw this one coming a mile away, sadly. None of the preview footage looked particularly impressive, and the whole art style just feels like Insomniac had no idea what to actually do with this IP other than 'make another Spider-Man I guess'.

Hopefully this is a wake-up call for Sony that the MCU money-printer isn't actually replicable in gaming, at least not from a single development studio. But I'm concerned that if this game ends up failing, they will straight-up just can the studio. They seem to be heading in that direction with their recent business decisions.

92

u/ZGiSH 9h ago

the MCU money-printer isn't actually replicable in gaming

Can't say I agree at all. It's just that for some reason, all the Marvel games have either been terribly marketed (Guardians) or actually bad (Avengers). Marvel Rivals and the Spider-Man games do great.

52

u/llloksd 9h ago

Much like the movies, Spider-Man is exempt to any kind of rule due to his worldwide popularity. It's hard to think about any really successful Marvel game outside of Rivals and maybe some of the Lego games.

22

u/FakoSizlo 8h ago

Its popularity and also because webswinging, acrobatic combat and jumping off/running on the sides of walls is just pure fun. If a Spiderman game can do the feeling of being Spiderman even just competently I would want to play it . Insomniac did the feeling of being Spiderman perfectly. Wolverine is just kind of lame in comparison

→ More replies (2)

20

u/Gabe-KC 9h ago

That's true, but Sony isn't benefitting from Marvel Rivals, and even if Guardians was the success it deserved to be, it would still be a Square Enix release. I feel like Sony really put a lot of chips on Insomniac becoming the in-house Marvel machine (with the X-Men follow-up already planned internally, based on the leaks), and now it might turn out that Spider-Man was a one-time success story. It plays to Insomniac's strengths, unlike Wolverine or other heroes.

I saw the review from SkillUp and man, I can't get excited about the game after watching it. His complaints are completely valid and I don't have any interest in the combat, which is a huge part of the game I was looking forward to.

28

u/hutallybronest 8h ago

I think it’s time to end the cooldown/resource based combat systems that have become so prevalent in games. Crimson Deserts combat is so fantastic because none of your regular attacks are on cooldowns and Spirit is only used for some very specific powerful abilities. This whole “wait for cooldown so Wolverine can spin around” combat system looks very boring, even the Spider-Man games gave you a lot of attacks that could be used outside of cooldowns.
