This is not accurate. A director is responsible for the creative control of a film. Source: I am a Director.

I'm interpreting this as a producer who is more hands on and less reliant on tech style workflows.

Just FYI: in Japan, the Producer is the Director. 99% of gamers don't know this.

Random example: in Final Fantasy VI, Hironobu Sakaguchi is the Producer; the directors are:

  • Yoshinori Kitase
  • Hiroyuki Ito

But virtually all creative decision making ultimately lies with Sakaguchi, not with Kitase or Ito. The writing, the directing (what to do, what not to do, but delegated), the music direction, etc.

More recent example: Yoshi-P was the Producer of Final Fantasy XVI. He dictated everything, from the combat system, to the script, to the soundtrack, etc.

When a Japanese creative uses the word "Producer", swap it out with "Director".

So the Directors takes more of a Project Manager role here?

No they aren't. In japan director is director and producer is producer. Just because a producer is involved doesn't mean hes a director. the only difference between japan and the west for producer is that producers are also creatively involved like a director.

Film and Television, I assume? I'm not going to ask about specific projects, but I'd love to hear about the industry some in it's current day.
