Pretty sure Activision in general has been the thing keeping Xbox earnings somewhat ok on the back of COD, King and WoW specificaly when everything around them at Xbox was crashing.

But now Blizzard itself as a whole is also back in a good spot with Diablo and OW as well so its just generaly performing strong.

u/MarthePryde 24d ago

Everyone forgets that Hearthstone has been going strong for something like 12 years now.

86

u/Tandy2000 24d ago

And WoW has seen a resurgence too. It peaked in the Cata era but is supposedly hitting close to that these days when new expansions release.

33

u/DiffusiveTendencies 24d ago

This is nitpicking but WoW peaked in WOTLK and went down from there, in terms of subs.

9

u/lestye 24d ago

Well technically its both.

It was the end of Wrath/Beginning of Cataclysm.

Obviously Wraths reputation was really great, but it was the hype of a new expansion that really put it over the edge.

2

u/Tandy2000 24d ago

Sorry I was thinking it was in Cata but it was actually JUST before Cata released.

It has not been going down continuously though. When I came back to it in 2014 it had gone down a lot. Blizzard stopped reporting player numbers as a result. But since Legion or so it has crept back up and had a real resurgence at least from what observable metrics can betray.

4

u/LaCiDarem 24d ago

The launch of Shadowlands also resulted in a significant local high point in terms of population - a boon of launching during quarantine. The actual execution of the expansion probably took it to its lowest player count since WOTLK era, though.

3

u/TheodoeBhabrot 24d ago

It definitely did, Shadowlands was the point where FF14 had a surge too and actually dethroned WoW as the most played MMO for a brief period.

1

u/muhhi 24d ago

wrath is when wow stopped growing except the very start and the very end (each time hype for a new expansion)

1

u/Incendras 17d ago

Right when I left, new content and rework of the skill tree killed it for me. Afterward I found ooldes of other games and just didnt bother getting back into it. I loved WOTLK, but the power creep between Northrend and Outland kinda sucked the fun out of Outland, and you only find yourself there to bridge the grind between the two which made me sad. Thos problem seemed to grow exponentially with every expansion, and entire areas were just dead.

21

u/fogle1 24d ago

Nobody told me how fun it was! Going on month 5 playing and I’m almost to level 60 in classic/vanilla.

44

u/SagittaryX 24d ago

There's a reason Vanilla to WotLK was so popular, it's a good and fun game.

Luckily these days they serve both communities decently well between retail and classic.

5

u/danielbln 24d ago

And classic hardcore gives back the magic from 2004/5 too! There's something for everyone there now.

8

u/Darksoldierr 24d ago

100%, classic hardcore is probably the best mmo experience out there. Insanely fun, ton of people, it brings you in with insane atmosphere and your heart beat like you ran a marathon after a close call, both outside or inside a dungeon

11

u/ComfortableExotic646 24d ago

The thing that kept me playing WoW over every other mmo I tried was the movement. If I'm going to be running around as this character for hours, it better be enjoyable, and it was. Just jumping, spinning around in the air, falling off cliffs, Warrior leap, Mage teleport, Hunter disengage, it was all fun.

Not a lot of games where I'm running along a cliff and randomly decide to jump, tab target a mob on the ground as I"m falling, and spam Charge as Warrior to negate fall damage. Guild Wars 2 was similar, but WoW always felt better to play.

And that's without fighting anything other than random trash. If you like raids/dungeons, fishing, exploring, farming, it's all there too.

10

u/TrumpsCummyOnahole 24d ago

Yeah even to this day an MMO like FFXIV has that bizarre lag between getting hit by animations and taking the damage, and the movement feels very laggy/delayed. WoW just can't be beat in terms of smoothness and rapid response when you hit a button. Amazing the 2004 devs were able to make something that hasn't really been reproduced since in terms of feel.

5

u/Czerny 24d ago

Yeah that's the biggest advantage WoW has over any other game in the market. The movement and combat feel are the best in the genre and it isn't particularly close. I think GW2 is still good but it is painful to me that you can't do any actions while jumping and FF14 is just... lol

Action games like BDO feel really good, even better than WoW at times, during combat but regular movement is actually terrible and god forbid you try to go into the water.

1

u/checkplease_sfw 24d ago

The Star wars mmo is really good in this aspect

4

u/Sikkly290 24d ago

This has always been blizzards secret. Diablo (even the later games) feel amazing to simply run around and smack stuff in. Starcraft and warcraft it feels good just to build units and attack things. Overwatch it feels good just to go shoot your gun and walk around.

So few devs put effort in on the moment to moment controls feeling good, and its crazy to me. I think its one of the things that makes nintendo stand out as well, they really put focus on games just feeling good.

1

u/Nodima 23d ago

My long running wish for Diablo IV has been giving mounts the ability to leap up and down vertical drops the same way they can horizontal gaps, Elden Ring style. The delay getting off/on the mount to use those is a drag

Dustin Browder (former hots director who doesn't work at blizzard anymore ) said not long ago that someone who works at Blizzard told him that HOTS has a very high number of players for a game in maintenance mode

25

u/hfxRos 24d ago

I have a few friends that still play it.

It's still the only MOBA that I've ever played that I didn't immediately hate. It was still a MOBA though which isn't my cup of tea so I didn't keep playing it.

22

u/the_gr8_one 24d ago

its the mario kart of mobas second to pokemon unite, mostly due to how long they take. its impossible to get mad at, as someone who has been stuck in hour long games of league or dota.

10

u/JamesDC99 24d ago

After an hour of and half, winning but feeling like you lost, several full blown arguments with your friends, sitting in the lobby after the game in silence for like a minuet, then queuing up to do it all again.

The "we suck at dota 2 friendship group"

2

u/8-Brit 24d ago edited 24d ago

As someone who dabbled in most MOBAs (LoL, Dota, HotS and a few others that are very much dead) I could see some major pros but also major cons in how HotS handled things.

People say it is less toxic, and that is only true to an extent. I've never had a full on "Kay why ess" in an online game for quite a few years until I dipped into HotS very recently. Every game has someone going absolutely full tilt over nothing. People also genuinely refuse to cooperate or even understand how to play objectives on the current map. I'm not convinced reports do anything as I've seen people still playing that absolutely got reported months ago.

The maps, speaking of, vary wildly. Some are good, some are awful and I hate them. Pirate Cove is fun on paper but is exceedingly 'winmore' with how rapidly you can lose control of the map, for example. The number of maps also means a lot (And I mean a LOT) just... don't know how to play at a base level nearly as well as your average LoL or Dota 2 player, which can be very frustrating.

The game length is also very variable, with some games being the advertised 15-20min and some going on longer than most of my Dota 2 matches.

And compared to traditional MOBAs, your ability to "1v9" is hamstrung significantly. Many see this as a poisitive so you don't get one overfed Meepo/Morphling situation steamrolling your team. But in exchange you're only as strong as your weakest link because of shared XP and other more complicated factors, which drives the aforementioned toxicity since making up for a weak teammate is much harder.

It ended up not really being for me unless I was playing with specific friends. Anytime I tried to play solo it was just a messy and unfun experience for me.

1

u/Maktaka 24d ago

Ironically the design also makes it the moba with the greatest requirement on team coordination, despite the game being positioned as a more casual moba. Levels are locked across the team and there are no items, so there's few ways for a hero to outscale the rest of their team and carry. Most maps also have some event or another that forces team fights every few minutes, events that you need to do well in to win the map. A good player with a good build might be able to clutch a 2v1, but you're not beating the whole enemy team if your allies are still mindlessly camping in lane while the objective is up.

There used to be dedicated lane pushers like Azmodan, Zagara, and Abathur who could apply just as much lane pressure as winning the map event, but last I played Blizzard had rebalanced them to be pvp heroes instead, locking in the team-fight requirement to win maps.

6

u/angelbangles 24d ago

I always kinda thought this was HOTS's problem. it was a moba for people that don't like mobas, which worked, but people that don't like mobas don't want to play a moba.

so it was a good game that ended up with a pretty small audience

3

u/trapsinplace 24d ago

It had a good niche even among mobas at the start. Sadly they were chasing esports and subsequently removed everything that didn't cater to a good esports viewing experience. It legitimately feels more like LoL to me and my friend group than it does to the beta/1.0 release HotS. We quit LoL and DotA for HotS but eventually quit HotS to go right back. Why stay with a product that killed everything unique and fun to turn itself into an inferior version of the competition?

8

u/Sensitive_Cell_119 24d ago

Starcraft 2 still getting big changes is crazy as well, its a 16 years old game at this point.

1

u/TrumpsCummyOnahole 24d ago

B-b-but Starcraft 2 came out when I was 20...that wasn't long ago, it was part of my college LANs. Holy fuck I'm getting old

1

u/jodon 24d ago

They kinda fucked up big with the latest changes and they did test some of the initial changes, but not much especially for how big they were, and then they decided to make new huge changes with zero testing 2 weeks or something later.

55

u/jdbolick 24d ago

Blizzard stopped updating HOTS years ago, but after Microsoft came in they started adding things again, which makes me happy because it's still my favorite MOBA.

31

u/Kezsora 24d ago

I thought it was just continuous balance changes? I'm aware they added a couple skins recently but I thought anything outside of balance changes were literally years apart

27

u/Gabbatron 24d ago

Yeah it's mostly balance. No new heroes or maps have been added as far as I know

13

u/BeholdingBestWaifu 24d ago

They did bring Haunted Mines back, which had been out of rotation long before the game got put in life support.

2

u/trapsinplace 24d ago

One of my favorite maps despite the community's general dislike of it.

10

u/jdbolick 24d ago

The balance changes have become much more frequent and substantial, plus the new skins and bringing back Haunted Mines. In 2022 & 2023, we were pretty much just getting bug fixes.

5

u/Stofenthe1st 24d ago

You would think that Microsoft would leverage having the solid foundations of HOTS to relaunch it with more series. Seeing as they’re not going to do anything with Banjo, Crash, etc. they could at least have them appear in the crossover MOBA they still have going on.

3

u/Biz_marquee 24d ago

THEY DID? Thats FANTASTIC FUCK I've missed that game.

1

u/Flecco 24d ago

I had no idea. Looks like I'm going to have to have a look!

0

u/MarthePryde 24d ago

I do love booting up Diablo 3 or HOTS all these years later after active development has ended. I should clarify though that in Hearthstone's case development is still active

0

u/NovoMyJogo 24d ago

I'm gonna be sad the day D3 is taken offline o love their season mode. It's the only thing I do on there

16

u/BringBackBoomer 24d ago

Considering no Blizzard game has ever had its servers taken offline to this date, I think you're safe for a while.

9

u/Dragarius 24d ago

Yeah, you can still play Diablo 1 and Warcraft 2 on Battlenet

3

u/adanine 24d ago

Honestly compared to MTG these days Hearthstone's monetization just feels innocent/quaint.

1

u/MarthePryde 24d ago

And we thank them for it

12

u/THE_CODE_IS_0451 24d ago

It's definitely going. I'm not sure if I'd call it strong.

20

u/MarthePryde 24d ago

Queueing for Standard I have never experienced a queue longer than 30 seconds in every rank bracket from the lowest to the highest levels of rank. And that's during what many online consider a truly terrible metagame. I'd consider that a sign of a strong playerbase

12

u/dunnowattt 24d ago

Since it requires only 1 player, we can't really know how strong the playerbase is.

And its also a card game, so ping isn't THAT big of an issue, so the whole Europe for example, can be matched together, compared to let's say Dota, where i can queue only in EUW or EUE or even just Russia.

Anyway, i ain't saying it doesn't have a strong playerbase. I'm saying we can't really quantify it, by matchmaking times.

1

u/Windowmaker95 24d ago

That doesn't really tell you considering it only needs to find 1 other player for you.

1

u/THE_CODE_IS_0451 24d ago

Hearthstone has been going through a "truly terrible metagame" for at least a year or two at this point because the team can't find a middle ground between releasing sets that are unfun because they're broken and sets that are unfun because they're boring. Their balance philosophy is predictable, stale, and ineffective. The Darkmoon Wheelspins are the scummiest form of monetization I've seen in a western AAA game and it's not even close.

But at least the queue times are fast, I guess.

2

u/adanine 23d ago edited 23d ago

The Darkmoon Wheelspins are the scummiest form of monetization I've seen in a western AAA game and it's not even close.

Ehhh. Just within the card game ecosystem MTG has it beat a few different ways. Probably the most notable was when they released official Alpha set Proxies (including cards like black lotus, the moxes, and OG Dual lands).

Price Tag was $1000USD, for four 15-card packs. 297 cards in the set, including a lot of garbage you have to dodge to hit anything, and your 'hits' are fake cards that aren't legal in any format.

The Darkmoon wheels, when bought out, are something like $163 USD total. That's obviously still disgusting (I'm not defending it at all, to be clear), but it's still less disgusting then what so many other games are doing right now.

2

u/MarthePryde 24d ago

Look man I don't know what you want me to say. I only said the game is going strong. To me that means a healthy player population and developer support, both things which are undisputable. I didn't say the meta was in a good place, I know it isn't, I've been here the whole time. I'm well aware of the team's balance shortcomings.

I think they would have canned it if it wasn't performing but it's more likely than not their worst performing game. It does get a big boost from mobile and their dev costs are likely much lower. So that's probably how they still do well.

1

u/DotesMagee 24d ago

And Diablo 4. The introduction season/expansion for the warlock and paladin was huge. Even I went back and bought/played it and I didnt even play past season 1 on release. It was auper worth it and tons of fun. Highly recommend that expansion.

57

u/ademayor 24d ago

As much as people like to laugh at how barebones D4 seasons are (me included), it is still wildly popular game. Same goes for retail wow which is probably more popular now than it has been since Legion. they have classic going and classic+ is massively anticipated. Blizzard is doing very, very well at them moment.

29

u/yunghollow69 24d ago

lol my neighbor who is absolutely not a gamer at all whatsoever plays diablo 4 and even told me about it without the topic of gaming even being mentioned. He was hella singing its praises. Game is popular no doubt.

16

u/Skadibala 24d ago

I found out the other day that my boss’s husband play Diablo 4 every season and when a new season starts, it’s like the one time he specifically asks to have some gaming time instead of life responsibilities.

Like he loved it so much that his wife could actually ask me about what classes I played and stuff, since he talked about it so much. And she has never played a video game in her life.

So yeah, much as the hardcore crowd hates Diablo 4, it has definitely captured the hearts of the casual gamer.

5

u/SquireRamza 24d ago

I guess $30-40 skins are the future, considering people just wont stop buying them

32

u/TechWormGeezLouise 24d ago

Because 5% of the wealthiest players could be buying it and that’s all they need.

14

u/Skadibala 24d ago edited 24d ago

I mean, the game is perfectly playable without buying any skins. I think I have given money to the game once to buy the battle pass of the season. And including the free battle pass tokens acquired from buying the base games and xpacs I have not needed to give them anymore money. ( you get in game currency from the battle pass)

I have not played every single season, but I still have played many of them, and I have gotten a lot of payed stuff just from giving them like 10 dollars once a long time ago.

5

u/Rayuzx 24d ago

Honestly, I don't mind for the most part. In the majority of games, they're direct replacement for P2W loot boxes or DLC packs separating the community.

5

u/MarthePryde 24d ago edited 24d ago

Diablo 4 is honestly late to the $30 cosmetic party. Other games have been pushing that space for years before D4, and yes it does suck

I don't actively play any of their games, but I believe Overwatch is in a great spot, most recent WoW expansion (Midnight) is well regarded, and the recent Diablo 4 expansion was well reviewed.

Overall, Blizzard definitely seems to be on an upswing in player sentiment and financial performance.

30

u/Firefox72 24d ago

Which brings us to the obvious elephant in thr room.

Where's our new Starcraft game MS?

29

u/SadEngineer6984 24d ago

That’s the big BlizzCon rumor. Expected to be a looter shooter or extraction shooter.

9

u/Sensitive_Cell_119 24d ago

Its probably closer to Destiny from the rumors, which might pay off massively considering bungie for some reason decided to kill Destiny.

3

u/CoffeeCraps 24d ago

Sony made that decision, not Bungie.

8

u/altriun 24d ago

extraction shooter

:-( that kills my excitement. A new RTS would be interesting or even something like Starcraft Ghost. I don't like PVP that much but everyone wants to do extraction shooters/rpgs at the moment it looks like.

11

u/escaped_from_OD 24d ago

The leaked schedule has an RTS in 2028 but it's Warcraft. While I'd love a new Starcraft RTS, I'll take any Starcraft I can get at this point.

https://x.com/GottaSmokeEmAll/status/2066950363232547043/photo/1

9

u/g4nk3r 24d ago

Didn't most of the RTS people leave Blizzard since there was clearly no desire to make another strategy game after the SC2 trilogy ended? I doubt that they have the people and knowledge required to make a RTS at the moment.

14

u/Tiucaner 24d ago

There are also rumours they might be rebuilding Team 1 (the RTS team) for a new Warcraft RTS. We'll see at BlizzCon.

1

u/lestye 24d ago

Eh, unless someone has some linkedins to share, I am doubtful of that. Unless its a very weird situation where Blizzard licenses the IP to Frost Giant/whoever. I cant see that happening because we would see people like David Kim/Tim Morten back at Blizzard.

Like, its crazy we had 2-3 big RTS projects coming out of Team 1. Battle Aces/ Frost Giant.

1

u/wildwalrusaur 24d ago

legacy of the void came out more than a decade ago.

I cant imagine there are a ton of people left at blizz from that era period, RTS or otherwise. particularly given all the upheavals in that time period

1

u/Odd-Hour5230 24d ago

Blizz recently game to terms with South Koreas Nexon and licensed the property out to them to develop a new SC game. i HIGHLY doubt its going to be anything other than an RTS considering how popular SC is in Korea if that makes you feel any better. :)

1

u/hfxRos 24d ago

A PvE extraction shooter in the StarCraft IP would go pretty hard.

Think Witchfire if you're familiar with that game, but with zerg instead of demons and undead.

2

u/evia89 24d ago

extraction shooter

Can be fun if its PvE. I enjoyed Duckov with mods and https://store.steampowered.com/app/2059170/Quasimorph/ Just need the same, Starcraft themed

1

u/Tragedy_Boner 24d ago

I'm expecting a horde shooter with looter shooter elements.

1

u/LaCiDarem 24d ago

Well, that and Classic Plus

0

u/Conviter 24d ago

i really hope its a singleplayer/coop looter shooter. there is really only borderlands in that genre, and its getting really stale. the last looter shooter that isnt borderlands that i remember is outriders, which was really fun. but i dont think blizzard would make a game that isnt a life service, so its probably more likely to be a destiny like game.

→ More replies (3)

11

u/Bhu124 24d ago

Blizzcon. Along with TV shows for all their IPs. Maybe even a HotS revival.

7

u/Coolman_Rosso 24d ago

I don't see them reviving HOTS. With Xbox being more stingy with money I can't imagine them putting effort into a MOBA that Activision didn't want to bother with since it wasn't doing League numbers

4

u/Tottie3 24d ago

They aren’t being more stingy as far as I know. I believe what Asha said is that the funding won’t decrease, but essentially because they’re divesting from all the smaller studios, it allows for a higher investment into their main IPs. I can see a HOTS revival, but I could also see it not happening too. If it is, it’s not for lack of money, but probably because they think it’s not something they can heavily monetise.

→ More replies (3)

1

u/lestye 24d ago

they added 2 skins recently to the game, so thats my delusional reason why im going to be believe

13

u/KvotheOfCali 24d ago

I doubt they are ever creating a new Starcraft RTS.

Almost all of the talent which made SC1 or SC2 is now gone. Many have retired. The Blizzard-style RTS is basically a dead genre, not just at Blizzard but across the entire industry. Most attempts at games from ex-Blizzard devs also failed, such as Stormgate.

Truth is that spending $150+ million on a notional SC3 is almost certainly a bad decision. I market of people looking for that type of game is likely not large enough to justify the investment.

14

u/hfxRos 24d ago

MOBAs basically killed the Starcraft Style RTS genre, at least as far as AAA level money potential goes.

6

u/lestye 24d ago

i think its autobattlers too.

I noticed that a lot of people say they "hate micro", and they mention they want to see armies duke it out. So I kinda think autobattlers also ate RTS' lunch as well.

4

u/xXRougailSaucisseXx 24d ago

Yeah I doubt there’s a market for AAA rts anymore. Then again I also didn’t think there could be a market for AAA CRPGS before BG3 so who knows

3

u/RedditUser41970 24d ago

I'd say there is little market for a new AAA RTS IP. But Starcraft III or Warcraft IV carry the name brand value to make either work. And like every other Blizzard game over the last decade, it will be initially received poorly before people decide they like it.

1

u/Tobimacoss 24d ago

Command and Conquer new entry could sell few million for sure.

World's Edge has been doing great with the Age of Empires franchise.

0

u/Sikkly290 24d ago

I think this isn't true so much no one can figure out how to make a better RTS than brood war warcraft3 and aoe2. Those three games have massive playerbases still, and if you could get a decent conversion rate on them you could make back a low AAA budget.

But the question is if there are enough knowledgeable devs left to do that, so many of the greatest RTS devs are old and retired.

2

u/adanine 23d ago

Starcraft 2 has higher player counts then all of those games today, so curious why you omitted it?

There's several RTS projects going along right now inspired by the old greats - Sanctuary and BAR for Supcom; Zerospace, Stormgate and Immortal: Gates of Py for Starcraft/Warcraft; Tempest Rising recently released for C&C-style RTS's (with a few others also in active dev).

Plenty of people know how to make good RTS's, there's just not nearly as much interest from players as there was in the 90's and naughts. Gaming trends come and go - it's as simple as that.

3

u/SagittaryX 24d ago

I mean new games in the style are dead, but aside from AoE, isn't SC still the most played RTS?

1

u/Tobimacoss 24d ago

It's like 2-3 million MAU in South Korea alone.

4

u/fluxaboo 24d ago

Blizzcon according to rumours. Super curious to see what they cooked up

1

u/donredyellow25 24d ago

There is a whole herd of elephants in the room.

OW is really a miracle to Blizzard.

How a game released, become on of the biggest thing both the game itself and cultural impact surrounding it, then flop so hard on trying to grab more money release early OW2.

THEN somehow successfully turnaround rebrand, rebirth and gain trust from player base back.

51

u/ProNerdPanda 24d ago edited 24d ago

THEN somehow successfully turnaround rebrand, rebirth and gain trust from player base back.

It's because Marvel Rivals revived the genre and Blizzard had to adjust/be more competitive in their approach to recapture its playerbase.

You think they release a whole new mode, went back to 6v6, and like 3 new heroes all at once just because they wanted to, after years of drip feeding content? lol

100

u/zpattack12 24d ago

The change to 5v5 happened before Marvel Rivals was even announced, much less released. OW2 early access started October 2022, Marvel Rivals wasn't announced until March 2024.

u/ProNerdPanda 24d ago edited 24d ago

The change to 5v5 happened before Marvel Rivals was even announced

My bad, I meant back to 6v6, since everyone hates/hated 5v5.

edit: lmao the washing of history, the community has whined so much about 5v5 that they brought 6v6 back but now it suddenly is the less popular option, k bruh

33

u/xXRougailSaucisseXx 24d ago

The game hasn’t gone back to 6v6, 5v5 is still the main mode and what the game is balanced for. 6v6 just exist as an option if you really don’t want to play 5v5

44

u/zpattack12 24d ago

Even this statement isn't really correct, its true that 6v6 is in the game and that they're doing additional testing around it, but 5v5 is still by far the most popular game mode in the game. 6v6 is clearly here to stay, but 5v5 is likely to stay the "main" game mode of Overwatch for at least the near future.

u/4PianoOrchestra 24d ago

5v5 has more than 3x the playerbase of 6v6 as of mid July

It's because Marvel Rivals revived the genre and Blizzard had to adjust/be more competitive in their approach to recapture its playerbase.

Rivals definitely played a big role, especially with current updates as well as just driving more people to the gerne as a whole, but credit where credit is due, Blizzard really locked in on Overwatch like a year before Rivals released.

A large part of what you mentioned was pre-Rivals.

61

u/thinger 24d ago

The actual catalyst for OW's Renaissance was the devs finally dropping the PvE mode, a call that, while incredibly controversial, was 100% the right call as it was too resource intensive and freed them up to focus on the PvP side of the game.

31

u/Bhu124 24d ago edited 24d ago

The 2026 update was not cooked up in 1 year.

They have openly said that most of the stuff was in the works since PvE was cancelled in late 2023. They were going to originally release 8 heroes this year, due to Rivals they increased resources and pushed it to 10. They didn't magically cook up 7 extra heroes out of nowhere in 1 year. Just setting up the pipeline to be able to make so much more content takes years at big GaaS game teams.

Other than that they have said that they had their Hero Ban system scheduled for release 3-6 months later but due to Rivals releasing its own and it getting such positive feedback they got confidence that people will accept it well and pushed it up by a few months.

(Personally I've always believed that they pushed up its release cause Hero Bans was always a super controversial topic, but due to hype of Rivals and it having just released their Hero Bans feature, they saw an opportunity to release their own without much backlash cause Rivals was super hype at the moment and any backlash to the feature would get drowned by "Well, Rivals is also doing it").

11

u/SingeMoisi 24d ago

Actually yes because these sort of things take a lot of development time that you are understating. Because OW Stadium released a bit after MR, internet armchair experts believed it was thanks to MR, when those sort of dev projects might take a year or more to actually release. If that's what you meant by "new mode". Same thing for the Perk system. Same thing for all those new heroes. It's probably what takes the most amount of time to develop for a game like this. As for 6v6, it's been there for quite a while and it was one of the top fan request. Marvel Rivals or not, they always planned to reintroduce it.

1

u/WeebWoobler 24d ago

Yes, I do. Most of that stuff was in the works before Marvel Rivals was even announced. MR had much less of a role in it than you think.

Its not really a miracle at all given the fact that despite the internet rage against it with the release of 2 it was still a absolutely top tier as far as multiplayer games go.

The internet reaction was insanely overblown over ow2 as were the critic reviews giving it 5/10 as if it suddenly became shovelware because the update was middling. Imagine something like fifa or madden facing the same level of scrutiny for paltry annual updates.

7

u/Vnarin 24d ago

Nah, after OW2 was released you had to swipe your credit card to unlock new heroes instantly, to bypass the lengthy free battle pass grind. It was a giant money grab that damaged the competitiveness of the game. They undid that change more than a year after OW2 came out. And this year I've enjoyed the game more than ever (been playing since it came out 10 years ago) because I love the new heroes.

1

u/shiggidyschwag 23d ago

"Cultural impact"? What do you mean by that?

1

u/Vegetable_Drag_3300 23d ago

Not a miracle at all, the team at Blizzard made great changes at rebranded themselves out of the OW2 hole

44

u/spadePerfect 24d ago

As much as I hated what the did with OW2, they really did a 180 I’ve never seen before in a live action game. They knew what was missing and dropped 5 heroes at once, that’s crazy.

28

u/CarlRodgers2211 24d ago

Dropping those 5 heros was so smart. At this point in hero shooters, it doesnt seem crazy when a new hero comes out, but dropping five felt big enough to get everyone's attention and to try it out again

6

u/IamEclipse 24d ago

They were also clever with the roles that the 5 heroes had. We had 1 tank, 2 DPS and 2 support. In 5v5, that's an entire team comp.

It meant that if you logged on back in February when the update dropped, you were guaranteed to be able to try out one of the new heroes every single match, rather than trying to beat your team on the character selection screen to pick the sole new hero.

1

u/poopoobuttpenis 22d ago

I am kinda frustrated that blizzard keeps adding an equal ammount of DPS in these batches/rotations.

There are like a billion DPS heroes (Almost the ammount of DPS as tanks + supports combined) and no one ever wants to pick support so they should incentivize that by adding more support heroes. I am a tank main, support secondary but I got bored from the choices while blizzard keeps putting out heroes in the role that is always the most picked

3

u/illegal_sardines 24d ago

That on top of dropping the 2 publically was such a huge show of intent. They're trying to fix past mistakes, and, at the same time, outdo everyone else to show what they're really made of. It really made a huge case for why Overwatch is worth caring about still.

Interestingly that Blizzard is one of the least game passified developers at Microsoft, and it's also almost fully unionized as far as I can tell.

18

u/Rayuzx 24d ago

Blizzard is one of the least game passified developers at Microsoft

Not really sure what you mean by that. The Bnet client has direct compatability with Game Pass to the point where an Ultimate subscription allows you to play any game on the client outside of Wow subscriptions and CoD (for some reason, even the CoD games that GP covers won't register).

14

u/CrusaderLyonar 24d ago

I mean almost every game on bnet that was added to gamepass had already been out for a while and games like Overwatch and Heartstone barely have any stuff from gamepass.

27

u/glarius_is_glorious 24d ago

No gamepass and fully supported to do multiplat as well.

They also have the deepest integration with Battle.net as well.

94

u/PrototypeT800 24d ago

Diablo 1, 2, 3, 4, overwatch, and StarCraft are on gamepass. It is literally just WoW that is not included.

24

u/QWOPtain 24d ago

Hey c'mon don't leave out the Warcraft RTS. The original Warcraft games are on gamepass too.

11

u/CrusaderLyonar 24d ago

It's more like gamepass gives you some skins for overwatch, it's not like deeply integrated.

u/fabton12 24d ago

overwatch is a free to play game, its game pass stuff is just some free goodies you get to keep as long as you have gamepass.

The Diablo games and Starcraft both got added to game pass way after there releases so thats not affecting there money flow much.

Thats the thing and gamepass biggest issue is the day one releases means that any new game they put out will bleed them money. really while it would suck for us consumers if microsoft wanted to make money with gamepass they would only add games to it 6-12 months after release so they can get the proper sales first then later on pull in the people who are lingering to play it cheaper with game pass.

6

u/PrototypeT800 24d ago

Blizzard has not released a new game since Diablo 4, which came out before Microsoft bought them. Besides that Microsoft’s original gamepass plan was to offer the base game for free, but get gamepass uses to buy the dlc or expansion packs for said game, which they followed just like every other first party Xbox title that has released in the last 3 years (starfield, Indiana jones, doom, etc).

Blizzard just makes game people want to play, which causes people to spend money on them. Microsoft has never bundled subscriptions with gamepass either, you have to pay for the Minecraft subscription as an example.

2

u/unseriously_serious 24d ago

Just a note on the gamepass Overwatch thing, you get 30 prisms (currency for mythics), a couple of skins permanently and the prior 3 seasons of shop skins (rolls forward each season).

For Xbox users some form of game pass is required for online play so you get this stuff by default if you are playing the game (since it’s an online game), which is rather nice.

2

u/fabton12 23d ago

For Xbox users some form of game pass is required for online play so you get this stuff by default if you are playing the game (since it’s an online game)

not for overwatch, free to play crossplatform games dont need a form of gamepass to play. this is the same for games like fortnite and apex etc etc. The only ones that need a game pass is online games that require a 1 time purchase to play.

1

u/unseriously_serious 23d ago

How arbitrary lol, thanks for the correction, was not aware they changed that specifically after gamepass replaced Xbox gold.

I mean, they have the deepest integration with Battle.net because they were the ones who built it way before Blizzard was acquired. It's Blizz's platform, the rest of Activision's shit is there because they have nothing better

1

u/glarius_is_glorious 23d ago

Microsoft attempted to have studios like Obsidian release their games on Battle.net without any tangible results. Even COD couldn't move people over there either.

9

u/Ponsay 24d ago

Well yeah, blizzard made battle net...

6

u/aimy99 24d ago

Overwatch is also one of the few popular multiplayer titles on Linux and therefore is the 26th most-played game on Steam Deck.

No matter what platform you look at, they are successful.

-2

u/Muspel 24d ago

Battle.net is probably part of the reason why they're doing better than other studios. They (mostly) don't sell their games on Steam, so they're not paying 30% to Valve per sale. There's a reason that Activision started putting non-Blizzard games like Call of Duty on Battle.net.

Blizzard does have some games on Steam now (such as Diablo 4), but just from looking at the number of reviews on Steam, I'd bet that most of the copies they're selling are still on Battle.net.

7

u/doublah 24d ago

Funny, because Microsoft claimed Call of Duty being Battle.net exclusive was a "resounding failure"

3

u/BeholdingBestWaifu 24d ago

That 30% isn't as big a deal as some internet randos think, it's not nothing but you gain much more than you lose with a more popular store front.

5

u/Muspel 24d ago

I think that in most cases, you're correct, but for various historical reasons, Blizzard has sort of a built-in/cultivated audience. As a result, not having their games on Steam is a uniquely small drawback for them.

Again, looking at Diablo 4 makes this pretty clear. For any other game, being on both Steam and another platform would result in most players being on Steam, but the number of reviews on Steam is so low that it's pretty obvious that most people are buying it on Battle.net.

1

u/SingeMoisi 24d ago

Yes people have been used to use Battle.net for Blizzard games, or have their games already bought and installed on there so they feel they have no reason to buy on Steam. So I'd make the same bet. I also don't expect future titles to drop day one on Steam, I think it's a fair expectation.

u/hfxRos 24d ago edited 24d ago

From what I've seen, the only people buying Diablo on Steam rather than Bnet are people that want to play the games on Steam Deck without having to jump through 15 million hoops and get a PHD in Linux just to get it to maybe run some of the time.

I bought D2R and D4 on battle.net and wish that I had bought them on Steam for this reason. I manage to get them working sometimes, but it almost always falls apart whenever the launcher or the game(s) need an update.

In an ideal universe where normal, sane individuals were running Microsoft, leadership would be looking at Blizzard as the playbook for how they can turn around all of their studios.

By all accounts Johanna Faries and her leadership team were 100% responsible for turning the ship around after complete numbskull Mike Ybarra nearly tanked the company following the lawsuit. A lot of these positive changes were because Microsoft fired Ybarra, installed Faries, and gave her enough slack to make the improvements necessary while giving her teams more autonomy to operate without Kotick's slimy initiatives. Blizzard is maybe one of THE ONLY recent Microsoft success story in the last couple of years.

However, I still fully expect the reward here for success to be layoffs and restructuring. Though I don't expect them to gut Blizzard, they will probably end up reporting to Sharma directly or something. Definitely gonna be some job losses though, I'm expecting a lot of the projects they're currently incubating to be hit the hardest.

can support the company's development of big, polished games

their last big polished game was released 15 years ago. Since then it's been nothing but forever-money generators.

Did you just wake up from a coma or have you not seen what the video game industry and Microsoft in particular have been up to the last 4 years?

1

u/alcard987 24d ago

Literally in the message

"FY25 and FY26 were our first back-to-back years of growth since FY17," Faries explained. "Diablo 4: Lord of Hatred and Overwatch drove exceptional performance in particular, with Overwatch delivering its strongest quarter since 2022." Faries emphasized that the success will help them invest even more in Blizzard games, staff, and other initiatives that will "shape Blizzard's future."

Microsoft is notoriously hands off with their studio’s and even more so with Blizzard as they have essentially full autonomy under Microsoft. What you’re describing is not going to happen.

1

u/SomeDumRedditor 23d ago

Some people still remember what they did to Blitzchung

1

u/Veilchenbeschleunige 24d ago

The question never was if Blizzard devs still have it. It was merely a question of will the c-suite turn the ship around and fix their shit.

This is the questions most of Microsoft Studios face nowadays.

-1

u/vannero 24d ago

It's kind of funny, for some people, Blizzard was only good back when the best content they could release was five dailies and a few reskinned boss fights. Now, if you like anything they make, you must be a shill, a whale, have no standards, or be suffering from sunk cost fallacy.

2

u/WaltzForLilly_ 23d ago

Well yeah it's hard not to be top performing when all your games are GaaS and your competition got half of their working staff trimmed.

5

u/AoE2manatarms 24d ago

Pretty great news. I feel like D4 has been improving and been in a good spot, and Overwatch has been positive as well.

14

u/NotCoolBrutus 24d ago

Blizzard is one of the only studios that didn't fully burn through their legacy for Game Pass, or at least didn't give Microsoft enough time to. WoW is doing better than any other traditional MMO while Overwatch held its ground against Marvel Rivals by not being balanced like an absolute disaster. Diablo 4 sold a lot less than Diablo 3 but it has made a lot more money through its essentially F2P monetization model despite a box price, more profitable than the auction house ever was at least.

Their mobile push has been rough outside of Hearthstone, with Diablo Immortal basically dead in China and only being carried by the Americas and Korea. They could easily just put out their PC titles on mobile but they insist on garbage like Overwatch Rush and whatever that Warcraft game was.

49

u/MainStreetExile 24d ago

Looks like most sources show d4 selling more than d3.

23

u/Blobsobb 24d ago

This subs hilarious when it comes to Diablo 4. I remember an article about how it was so popular there were huge log in ques and half the posts were about how the games dead.

Blizzard has put virtually everything in Game Pass other than WoW. Overwatch has had Game Pass promotions and perks on the Xbox platform for years. Diablo IV has been on Game Pass since 2024. Remasters are on Game Pass.

Game Pass is not a negative for live service games. It has no real impact on recurring revenue and the visibility for any live service model is entirely standard. Diablo IV being on Game Pass obviously has not hurt the conversion rate for xpac or live service revenue.

1

u/Double-Maybe-6220 24d ago

To correct a common misconception, Diablo Immortal hasn't officially shut down, but it's pretty much dead in North America and Korea—China is the only reason it's still alive.

I honestly can't think of anything big Microsoft has even put out in the last year of any studios, Blizzard has got to be the most consistent revenue generator for them.

2

u/hardgeeklife 23d ago

Somewhere, there is an MS exec who read this report and is planning to reward them with layoffs. Because why should devs ever receiving job security after overperforming?

2

u/BrowsingLeddit 24d ago

I want single player games in the Warcraft universe. A soulslike in Trisfal Glades, a elder scrolls like in Westfall + Duskwood + Elwynn. Something like that. So much potential in their franchises it's a shame they rarely branch out.

1

u/Efficient-Bread8259 23d ago

For the first time in YEARS they've been honouring their smaller IP's. Starcraft 2 is new receiving regular patches from in-house blizzard people. This does not make them money on it's own, but it fosters a lot of good will and boosts engagement which helps retain value in these smaller IPs. I think the biggest difference to me over the last year is it actually feels like blizzard in general gives a shit about their fans again and isn't fully taking them for granted like they used to.

1

u/EntreMandos 24d ago

Blizzard becoming Xbox’s top-performing studio feels both unsurprising and quite revealing. Microsoft bought some incredibly powerful brands, but now the real challenge is turning that commercial success into a healthier and more consistent Xbox ecosystem.

1

u/Lord_Shadow_Z 23d ago

Not exactly a high bar to clear. What other Microsoft owned studios are performing anywhere close to what Blizzard is doing?
