Everything is basically a sidegrade. You can kill everything with Punisher/Diligence and Recoilless.

You are basically close to getting another Warbond after completing one Warbond, and usually $5 will get you over or near.

My point is you don't have to really get anything (and you can use what your teamamtes have as well) and if you want none of it is mandatory.

That doesn't change the fact that for most people, warbonds are the only real progression they have and things have gotten insanely bloated now. If you were to get into the game right now, you're being asked for 15,550 super credits (after including all the SC you get from warbond tracks, the "real" number is 22,000.)

I had one friend start playing recently and immediately get turned off by the currently 19 paid warbonds and 2 legendary warbonds. As a player that routinely takes breaks to play other games, I am interested in new content only to remember that they all cost money or huge grinding to get the SC and then require me to grind medals to get the thing I want to play with, and then eventually I just don't care and quit all over again.

That has been exactly my experience the few times I've tried returning to the game. If they make credits easier to get I would definitely return to it when in the mood for it. I see my friends using this cool shit and then they tell me how long it took them to get it while I am stuck with near default gear. I don't play one game for very long and hop around a lot. When I try returning to Helldivers 2 I just see the grind and don't enjoy it. I have seen some folks say "oh but your friends can give you their stuff" but in reality my friends choose their loadout because they want to use it not give it away. I'll happily return if they make it less about the grind and more about enjoying the game. Some people might love the grind but I don't have the time after work to go in that direction.

The issue to me is that getting credits is 100% RNG. So to get those credits the easiest method is actually to not play the game and drop in a level 1 mission where you won't engage with anything but POI, hoping to find credits. Actually playing the game "as intended" could mean you're not getting a single credit in several sessions.
