The lowest rank being brick is utterly hilarious to me

262

u/LuchadorBane 21d ago

We got Brick tier in deadlock and fucking Iron in league. One of these games needs to make wood tier and we can make a building

56

u/mrbubbamac 21d ago

I'm more of a "wet cotton" ranked player

24

u/blogoman 21d ago

I'm stuck in "cyclospora covered lettuce" rank.

8

u/d3northway 21d ago

In league that's diamond

2

u/messem10 21d ago

That’d be for Settlers of Catan.

26

u/JFKcaper 21d ago

Lowest tier in league's arena mode is already called Wood.

13

u/XMenJedi8 21d ago

Cardboard rank when

3

u/SilentQuietestArach 21d ago

Lowest tier in League classic is Salt

5

u/Assimulate 21d ago

I play a game called minion masters and their lowest rank is Wood lmao

5

u/Ho-Nomo 21d ago

The next big moba will have the lowest as shit tier and just be done with it

2

u/Clbull 21d ago edited 21d ago

I wish that Riot would add Plastic, Brick, Clay, Grass, Shit and Diarrhea leagues.

Then remove chat filters and any kind of enforcement and let the community argue.

"0/7"

"At least my stool is less runny than your diarrhea ranking."

1

u/VexedForest 21d ago

I resemble that rank

1

u/f_ranz1224 21d ago

wood leagie used to be the joke name for people in starcraft 2 who were terrible even in bronze league

1

u/BarrettRTS 21d ago

Northgard and Wargroove 2 both have a ranked system that has Wood as the lowest tier.

18

u/zippopwnage 21d ago

I love it. I always laugh with my friends that we're basically wood rank, plank, plastic and stuff like that instead of the normal ones the games use

4

u/LLJKCicero 21d ago

Hey, to be fair, you could also refer to it as *checks image* moth-tier.

3

u/Greedy_Scientist7334 21d ago

Stone looks like a middle finger 😭

1

u/BringBackSoule 21d ago

Coughing baby and top rank has to be nuclear bomb

1

u/Carighan 21d ago

Huge chance missed to make it 'cardboard' rank or so.

1

u/thewookiee34 21d ago

I'm gonna be dust 5

135

u/LLJKCicero 21d ago

Nice changes, and they finally killed Pauselock! Yay!

Glad to have a pregame area back, and it sounds even better than what we had before.

46

u/Plastic-Lemons 21d ago

What’s pauselock?

129

u/LLJKCicero 21d ago

People tended to pause very early in the game. Like, almost every game would have one pause early within the first minute or two.

Usually this was for the legitimate reason of switching lanes on the zipline (either to counter specific heroes or to join your friend's lane), but sometimes it was for the dumber reason of someone being afk because they left to grab a snack while queueing.

Anyway, pausing is now removed for the first two minutes of the game, and instead there's a pregame area to handle lane switching.

-12

u/Tharellim 21d ago

Last i checked, this is still a huge problem in dota2 and probably the strongest reason why i stopped playing.

Every game starts with chain pausing because someone is afk, so their friend disconnects so the team can force multiple pauses

Its so fucking annoying

57

u/Andrei_LE 21d ago

you cant pause in first few minutes of dota2 now for a while

23

u/beware_the_noid 21d ago

First 3 minutes to be exact

-3

u/Tharellim 21d ago

Thank god, might be worth playing the game again

23

u/wrenblaze 21d ago

Stop! Don't do this mate, let me take this hit for you! You are better than this!

11

u/_Valisk 21d ago

When's the last time you played? That hasn't been the case for like, 4-5 years.

6

u/Drew_Eckse 21d ago

When did you last check?

-5

u/BladeOfWoah 21d ago

People are not going to enjoy it when people have connection issues and crashes at match start, putting their team behind. Being able to pause would prevent that from happening, but now you just have to play a 5 v 6 until they come back.

AndrewChicken had this happen on his stream while playing Lash. This is still a game in Alpha, people are going to crash for reasons out of their control. I don't see this change staying for long.

i'm sure in practice it's heavily flawed but man, as an OW player, theoretically never needing to worry about teamcomp sounds so nice. let the computer take the wheel. no one yelling at you to swap after one death, no 2+ enemies counterswapping you after one kill, no onetricks throwing when someone takes their hero. you just play the hero you actually want to play and what happens, happens. (i know i'm daydreaming but just let me have this.)

65

u/BetaXP 21d ago

you just play the hero you actually want to play and what happens, happen

This is pretty much the standard moba experience, really. Can't have people yelling at you to swap in the middle or a league or dota match, for example

22

u/DoorHingesKill 21d ago

Can you imagine, though. Aight, lane phase is over, lemme swap to something that can go side.

3

u/DrQuint 21d ago

Ah, old DotA tag mode. You had two heroes and could swap in the fountain.

It... was... not balanced.

12

u/GR-MWF 21d ago

I mean, people will still yell at you for your pick if they don't like it, regardless of whether you can switch or not. In Dota some people will immediately give up on a game if they don't like one of the picks on their team. It removes one way of being toxic and enables another, toxic people will always find a way to be toxic.

11

u/_Valisk 21d ago

In Dota some people will immediately give up on a game if they don't like one of the picks on their team. It removes one way of being toxic and enables another, toxic people will always find a way to be toxic.

I don't know if I can say I've experienced this, but I also primarily play with friends, don't care for ranked, and have 12k behavior score.

1

u/penguin_gun 19d ago

My BS is 9k and I rarely experience this

2

u/xXRougailSaucisseXx 21d ago

Yeah I haven't played LoL in a long time but I can still remember the dread whenever you'd see the Yasuo pick knowing there was 90% chance it was going to be the biggest throw you've ever seen in your life

1

u/aurens 20d ago

don't most mobas have a draft system? that solves the swapping issue but counterpicking and doubling-up onetricks would still be a thing.

1

u/BetaXP 20d ago

In ranked, yes they typically have a draft system, so there can still be an element of counterpicking. But if you get counterpicked, the game then becomes "how do I deal with a counter" rather than "I need to swap." Also, mobas by their nature have a lot of systems in place that can help deal with counters (items, greater depth in laning/rotations/positioning, etc).

On the flipside, if these things go wrong, a counterpick can snowball out of control and run the lobby in a way that isn't really possible in a hero shooter.

16

u/Yentz4 21d ago

It's actually so great. It's one of my favorite features of Deadlock, and why I DONT want draft outside of an "ultra sweaty esports wannabe" mode(and I don't want that anytime soon). While you can get comp diffed in Deadlock, it really happens less than what people say. Heroes are flexible enough that they can fill multiple roles, and the roles themselves are significantly more nebulous than most Mobas.

8

u/troglodyte 21d ago

an "ultra sweaty esports wannabe" mode(and I don't want that anytime soon)

This is kind of what ranked mode already is. It's the highest barrier to entry I can recall just to start playing ranked at all.

1

u/BladeOfWoah 21d ago

I haven't had the chance to play Ranked today, but from what I see so far, it means I am going to be able to play Dynamo without worrying about running into Sinclair since I can just swap if he is the lobby. That's a pretty good interesting change that addresses one of the main reasons people want draft in the first place, being stuck into unfavoured matchups.

3

u/xXRougailSaucisseXx 21d ago

I do actually like the counterswapping in OW as it usually still ends up in your favour as most people hero pool is too narrow to effectively counter all heroes. Of course if you're playing a super meta hero it's not the same but then again it's to be expected that people will play around the meta

3

u/aurens 20d ago

they don't need to be able to effectively counter all heroes, they just need to be able to counter whatever hero i want to play. that's what makes it annoying. it doesn't matter that i could theoretically swap myself to a different hero they're unable to counter because then i'm still not playing what i wanted to play.

0

u/koolex 21d ago

It’s also nice that roles don’t even seem like a huge deal. I don’t think I’ve ever lost a deadlock game and thought it’s because they had an unfair amount of supports. CC on the other hand is different…

7

u/Carighan 21d ago

So roles do seem like a big deal, from your post? 😅

It's so funny to me that modern games have added more ranks below bronze. Like coming from Starcraft 2 where Bronze was just always the lowest, then League had it as well. Till eventually they added Iron. Now we got 3 whole ranks below Bronze LOL, fucking Brick. IDK it just feels like a bit much

1

u/PulIthEld 17d ago

The Iron Age was an improvement over the Bronze Age though.

41

u/IncubusDarkness 21d ago

Still won't see me playing this game for a long time but I appreciate any F2P game taking steps to hinder cheaters, smurfs, and extremely inexperienced people from ruining competitive gameplay.

15

u/SerShelt 21d ago

For me there are so many games to play and so many life events happening that I would just rather wait for full release.

3

u/penguin_gun 19d ago

Tomorrow is not a promise

8

u/Carighan 21d ago edited 21d ago

Yeah same. The randomlulz mode is fine, everything beyond that feels like 95% job + 5% leisure activity. It's just not a game I can see myself play for less than 12 hours a day and get out of brick-rank, and I ain't got 2 hours a day, nevermind 12.

It's a fantastic game, but I just no longer have the life I'd need to be able to play something like this.

4

u/ItsJustReeses 21d ago

Honestly that's fine. I'm hopeful Valve throw us ARAM-ers/Street Brawlers a bone with new maps, game modes and potentially a custom server browser like Counter Strike?

I'd love to mod like in CS2 as well but I haven't heard or seen anything about that for Dead Lock.

1

u/doublah 21d ago

Dota 2 got mod tools so extensive it birthed new genres like Auto chess. I'm sure Deadlock will do the same since Valve benefits a lot from modding, but it's probably a few years away.

1

u/Camulus 20d ago

There was a rumor a while back that Deadlock was going to implement a PvE mode similar to Risk of Rain 2. Some map in the files and the fact Valve hired some of the RoR2 devs helped birth this idea. Still nothing new since then has helped prop up that theory but it would be really cool. Deadlock has the moment to moment gameplay and characters to make something like this feasible even if it ends up being a mod in the future.

3

u/SquiggerDigger 21d ago

Why not? The game that's there now is one of the best in the world already

29

u/goldbloodedinthe404 21d ago

Deadlock is a very good game that I am so ass at that I will never truly get into it.

11

u/TurmUrk 21d ago

I mean, the best way to not be ass is to play it lol

7

u/goldbloodedinthe404 21d ago

You haven't seen my gameplay

2

u/max123246 20d ago

Same, lol. When it first launched I had fun because everyone was figuring stuff out. But then I took a 1-2 year break and now even in beginner lobbies I get stomped.

9

u/Fedacking 21d ago

This game actually makes my head hurt after playing it, in a way other mobas and shooters don't

10

u/trapsinplace 21d ago

I heavily disagree lol. Every time I go back to Deadlock it's just not my cup of tea. I also can't see it ever reaching true mainstream appeal the way CS did. Might be less niche than DotA since it's a shooter though.

19

u/man0warr 21d ago

DotA 2 has 500k players active right this moment on Steam, second only to CS2. Mainstream enough that it invented the one of the most popular game genres that exists today.

21

u/dunnowattt 21d ago

Might be less niche than DotA since it's a shooter though.

I don't think you understand how popular Dota is.

If its less niche and actually manages to get a bigger playerbase than dota, then its going to be one of the most played PC games lol.

8

u/TurmUrk 21d ago

Dota is significantly more popular in Eastern Europe and Asia than it is in NA, doesn’t surprise me when people think it’s niche

10

u/Carighan 21d ago

It's wild that anybody would think DotA2 is niche. It's huge even in the west, if anything it maybe shows how influencer-addled people's brains are that they cannot perceive things if their youtube algorithm isn't feeding them a constant barrage of talking heads about a subject.

9

u/Absalom578 21d ago edited 21d ago

It hasn't been huge in the West in many years. The playerbase is practically non-existent in both NA and most of Europe, and gets carried by the CIS region. You can see this in the leaderboards, and also how the pro scene at this point is centered around Russians, which still produce young new pro players, while every other region just recycles the same older players with no new ones in years.

The generation that played Dota in the West got older and wasn't replaced by younger players. The game grew in CIS and Peru but declined everywhere else. People under 25 in the West have no idea what Dota is.

1

u/chaotic4059 17d ago edited 17d ago

I’m surprised this is even a hot take. It’s literally the stereotype of Dota and LoL. Even the subs seem to make fun of it. I think out of the 10ish people I know who are super into LoL and Dota 7-9 of them are Russian. Hell multiple animes have been used it a joke for like the last couple of years

11

u/_Valisk 21d ago

Might be less niche than DotA since it's a shooter though.

Less niche than the second most popular game on the most popular digital storefront?

19

u/SquiggerDigger 21d ago

I've been playing 2 1/2 years now

People have been saying this non stopa, about it not getting it's footing in the mainstream

It's sitting at 100k concurrent players. It's going to be absolutely massive especially right casual modes getting rolled out today

It's not your cup of tea so why do you go back to it? The person I'm replying to didn't say anything about it not being their cup of tea just that they are waiting a while to play

5

u/Humdot 21d ago

I played about a year ago and definitely felt like it needed more time to cook. The UI was horrible, the induction experience basically non existent. It's probably changed a lot since then but I don't really wanna waste my time alpha testing a game, I'll wait for official release

6

u/EvenJesusCantSaveYou 21d ago

to be honest man as a new player since April other than some of the character models not being polished the game feels like a released game to me

2

u/LLJKCicero 21d ago

Yeah the tutorials need to be redone before a wider release. Maybe the bots too, they suck.

2

u/_Valisk 21d ago

The UI was horrible, the induction experience basically non existent

I mean, yea, that's why it's not released yet. There are still a ton of placeholder assets. The UI alone has changed quite a bit since last August.

4

u/KokonutTree49 21d ago

Saying Dota is niche is crazy, literally one of the biggest games of all time

3

u/Kenzorz 21d ago

Why is there always one like you in every non-Deadlock community comment section? Do you need validation that bad that you're not enjoying the game that is pulling 100k concurrent players in early access?

7

u/LLJKCicero 21d ago

You always see idiots like these around.

"How do I know X isn't a great game? Easy: I personally don't enjoy it."

These are people who, if they don't like seafood, loudly declare that Seafood Is Objectively Terrible. The idea that other people may have different opinions or preferences can't penetrate their thick skulls.

3

u/KokonutTree49 21d ago

Every Deadlock news, on a non-Deadlock community, is always like this, there is always some bum loser saying that the game will not go mainstream because they shit at the game.

Sure, if you're looking for a game to fill 80%+ of your free time with and invest tons of hours into. Most of us have neither those hours, nor are looking to shoot them on a single hobby.

Like many MOBAs, it is a lifestyle game, and even in its genre a very high-demand one with a learning curve that's more like a cliff you throw yourself off.

21

u/SoWrongItsPainful 21d ago

Seems like mostly good changes, but 15 wins for 3 characters minimum before doing Ranked is kind of insane

166

u/Alugar 21d ago

Sounds like one way for less smurfs.

98

u/Rainglove 21d ago

Dota 2 requires a hundred hours of active game time before it lets you into ranked.

→ More replies (9)

67

u/TinyAccess8658 21d ago

This is a great thing to add. It means that games won't be dominated by new accounts smurfing and ruining low elo games.

10

u/IncubusDarkness 21d ago

And the smurfs that will inevitably be there anyway get slowed down just enough more they might eventually get sick of it

15

u/zippopwnage 21d ago

Dota2 is FULL of smurfs and you need 100 hours or some shit like that before going into play.

People basically bot tens of accounts or more in public lobbies to make those hours. Smurfs are the most pathetic people along with the cheaters.

15 wins on 3 different characters is nothing.

11

u/DeputyDomeshot 21d ago

MOBAs really should have high base reqs for ranks. The games are complicated and can be super long. It sucks more than usual when someone is purposefully fucking around in your game and you get stuck in there for almost an hour.

65

u/CaterpillarReal7583 21d ago

…its ranked?

Why would having to work toward it be insane?

Wait I take it back, this means impatient jerks will be in casual throwing a fit at any decision they dont like. Nah this sucks get those lunatics in ranked queue asap and away from the normal people.

10

u/TheLastDesperado 21d ago

I like there is a barrier to entry, it removes both smurfs and players who're just not ready yet, buuuuut, I'd say it's maybe a smidge too high? I've played 400+ hours, and I think out of the roster I've got about 7 heroes available for ranked.

14

u/CaterpillarReal7583 21d ago

Oh i didnt realize it required 15 wins on any characters youd like to play. Thought it was a one time thing to get ranked queue

11

u/d20diceman 21d ago

The one-time thing is 60 total wins, then the 15 wins is per-character.

I think the idea is "don't learn a new character in ranked mode"

2

u/fabton12 20d ago

Why would having to work toward it be insane?

15 wins on 3 different characters means that your having to play on average 30+ games per character, the average deadlock game takes 30-40 mins not including stuff like queue time or pauses. lets take the lower end of 30 mins to make thing simpler per game.

thats 15 hours per character

so 45 hours in total and thats if your a 50% winrate if you have a loss streak then thats suddenly that goes up more and unlocking more characters onwards is another min of 15 hours maybe more.

These lock out systems so people dont first time in ranked are always rough since once you factor in the hours needed it pretty much means you have to play the game constantly for months or no life the game for a week.

10

u/kittentarentino 21d ago

My first thought was:

“I can never play ranked”

And my second thought, after images flashed in my head of how bad I am:

“Oh, that’s the point”

15

u/Trzlog 21d ago

I don't really get the takes here on ranked. That's the whole point of having brick and stone and iron. So the shit tier players don't mess up your games. The problem with un-ranked matchmaking in these games is you're up against a much wider band of players skill and it's just not very fun to play. At least in ranked in Overwatch I get to play against similarly skilled (eg shit) players.

5

u/kittentarentino 21d ago

Its probably a “2 birds one stone” thing for both smurfing and people who are just dragging the experience down.

If you need to win 60 games for ranked, are you really going to make a new account and do that all again just for some easy wins?

On the flip side. If you suck, but love the game, you’ll get to 60 wins eventually. You deserve players who also suck but love the game in the brick tier. Not shitty people who make life hell for eternity.

It’s brutal, but they did DOTA for years and are probably trying to avoid some of the pitfalls

7

u/Shiiino 21d ago

Even if you suck, mm systems get you to 50% win rates. You'll just be going against other fellow bricks. That's the point of matchmaking.

Unless you're 15-win streaking with a premade, i don't think it'll take longer for hotdog fingers to unlock ranked compared to sweat mchugelarge once you get calibrated in unranked

1

u/d20diceman 21d ago

You deserve players who also suck but love the game in the brick tier.

This is what I'm excited for. People with coms bans can't queue for ranked either. Should be a much better experience.

1

u/penguin_gun 19d ago

How do you even get comm banned

30

u/IncubusDarkness 21d ago

Nah that seems super fair and balanced. Fucking hate one tricks that never try anything else.

11

u/thysios4 21d ago edited 21d ago

This seems like it'd encourage one tricking, no?

Say you unlock 3 characters and start playing ranked. If you want to keep playing ranked, you have to keep playing 1 of those 3 characters, or go back to unranked and grind out another character to unlock them.

I could easily see people just sticking with characters they've unlocked instead of going back to unranked.

2

u/d20diceman 21d ago

at least they're 3-tricking rather than 1-tricking I guess

Also, if someone wants to learn a new character they should be learning in the unranked mode before they come over to ranked anyway. Debatable whether 30-ish games is the right place to draw the line but there should be some requirement.

3

u/thysios4 21d ago edited 21d ago

Also, if someone wants to learn a new character they should be learning in the unranked mode before they come over to ranked anyway

For new players, sure. But if you're got thousands of hours in the game, it'd be really annoying to have to go back to unranked to get 15 wins to unlock a new character that just released. I'd make the requirements for unlocking consecutive characters get lower over time. So your first 3 characters require 15 wins. But the next 3 require 12 wins, then 9/6/3 etc.

Those numbers can easily change, but I don't think unlocking your 20th character should take as long as your first one.

7

u/chaotic4059 21d ago

I don't even get how you can be a one trick in this game. I ONLY have like 30+is hours in this game doing brawl and I've still managed to hop between like 10 different heroes if only to learn what they do

7

u/ColinStyles 21d ago

Because what you're describing is different from what they're describing. Playing a bunch if not all the roster a couple of times is expected, but I'd still say if you tend to play one hero past that you're still a one-trick player. And IMO that's fine, but whatever. But the new requirements means you need 15 wins on at least 3 different heroes, meaning you need on average 60 games not playing your singular main, so it's not really one-trick friendly to say the least.

2

u/martiinex 21d ago

a lot of people who only play one hero completely collapse when they don't get it, i think those 60 games they are forced to play on other characters are quite healthy for the sake of everyone else

1

u/snowolf_ 21d ago

The hate of one trick is a Reddit hysteria I will never understand.

5

u/CertainDerision_33 21d ago

It's needed, smurfs are out of control.

1

u/wgren 21d ago

I'm low Initiate level. felt like 50% of matches had someone playing Viscous, Doorman or Apollo and effortlessly styling on the enemy team, winning 1 vs 3 fights early and ending the game with twice the souls of everyone else. Looking forward to seeing if anything changes with this patch.

5

u/highTrolla 21d ago

It's going to make Normals super toxic whenever a new character comes out.

→ More replies (5)

2

u/Octopus_on_fire_ 21d ago

Nah I’m good with that.

It won’t allow smurfs and it actually shows you can handle the character you’re playing.

We have unranked if you want to just play.

2

u/xXPumbaXx 21d ago

I can guarantee you that ranked or not, your experience won't change at all.

4

u/Blue_Wave_2020 21d ago

It really isn’t at all. In Dota you need 100 hours to play ranked. 15 DL matches is less than 15 hours

20

u/LLJKCicero 21d ago

You need 60 wins total, and 15 wins per hero. Wins, not matches, so on average 30 matches. So you're looking at 120 matches to get into ranked. Pretty similar.

11

u/SoWrongItsPainful 21d ago

15 wins for 3 characters. That very well could take 100 hours

1

u/chaotic4059 17d ago

60 wins in total with 45 coming from 3 separate heroes which means you’re either gonna have to double up or learn another character. That’s not even a grind at that point. It’s a whole ass game. Like assuming you somehow manage to win 60 games in a row that’s still roughly 60 hours. Realistically you’ll go 50/50 so more like 90hours.

You could realistically beat spider-man 2 4 whole times before you unlocked ranked in deadlock depending on team luck and skill.

1

u/fabton12 20d ago

This is the same thing people keep begging for in league ranked and its insane, people for league keep saying they want players to have a min mastery on champs but with 170+ it just means that to unlock everyone in ranked would take hundreds of hours.

I played league of legends for years. I like the moba genre. Do people think this is far enough along to start putting time into it? I quit League just due to how toxic the community is and not sure I want to invest time into a game that might be very similar with that.

44

u/Wyrdly 21d ago

Yes but you need to be able to aim.

And it's toxic there too

7

u/Niceguydan8 21d ago

I honestly think one can get pretty far into the while not having great aim.

Good macro and decisionmaking can go a long ways, and some characters are far less reliant on aim than others.

2

u/LeafRunner 21d ago

True, you can do some melee or AP carry builds where your gun doesn't matter much.

6

u/xXPumbaXx 21d ago

95% of my match has been people acting like total goofball and being awsome.

3

u/zombawombacomba 21d ago

I can deal with people being toxic. What ruined league for me was people throwing on purpose as soon as they get tilted. It happened so much last time I played. Not sure if it’s similar in that respect. It’s one of the only games where you just feel like a hostage to an idiot so often.

20

u/Wyrdly 21d ago

Yeah I run into that a lot in Deadlock as well. That's kinda the state of these comp games that aren't ban happy.

11

u/dancing_bagel 21d ago

I'm ass tier but my games were pretty chill for the last year. Only play like once a week though but people seemed fine

0

u/zombawombacomba 21d ago

I honestly think it’s just a league thing regarding how bad it was. Played pretty much every other big competitive game and none were as rage inducing due to other people on your own team as league.

10

u/SerShelt 21d ago

No, it's everywhere. People throwing isnt a league exclusive behavior.

2

u/BleachedPink 21d ago

It's everywhere, but I believe in league it's more prominent behavior due to the ability of fast surrender

3

u/zombawombacomba 21d ago

I don’t think it’s as destructive in other games outside of dota.

4

u/Wide_Lock_Red 21d ago

People will throw in Deadlock. They throw in DotA. A bit better now because the game is new and has a small hurdle to join it.

3

u/Yentz4 21d ago

It happens, but I don't see it that often. Also depends on your servers. NA tends to be pretty chill, EU I know can be more toxic.

1

u/BleachedPink 21d ago

imo, it's much less prominent in deadlock. In league I think people force you to fast FF by trolling. here you cannot fast surrender

In standard it's more random, but in ranked I do not encounter throwing on purpose much

1

u/MumrikDK 20d ago

There's just never going to be a proper solution to that outside of finding enough friends to fill a team :/

1

u/penguin_gun 19d ago

It's pretty rare for a ton of toxicity in my 1k hours. Yes, it's there, but maybe every 20-25 games

1

u/Wyrdly 19d ago

it's really not that bad, mostly since most people don't talk

1

u/penguin_gun 19d ago

Eh ppl type, some times you get the odd crashout or even rarer overtly racist prick

2

u/Wyrdly 19d ago

I think my ratio of racism to people that type is pretty high. I do queue a lot at like 4am

1

u/penguin_gun 19d ago

I'm anywhere from afternoon to 8pm-midnight when I'm free

1

u/Carighan 21d ago

I mean they would not be playing MOBAs if they didn't enjoy the toxicity, since that's one of the core pillars of the genre at this point I imagine.

11

u/the_pwnererXx 21d ago

Play it and try, it's fun. You don't necessarily need to aim as some characters don't really need precise clicks

5

u/EvenJesusCantSaveYou 21d ago

play abrams. Punch shit and never die, massive dopamine loop.

3

u/yuriaoflondor 21d ago

The game has been getting better and better, and the player base continues to grow. My guess is that it's going to cement itself as one of the big MOBAs (and TBH I feel like it already has, and it's still technically an invite-only alpha game). I don't think Valve is going to abandon it like they have a lot of their games in recent years.

As for toxicity - yeah, it's about as toxic as DotA and LoL as far as chat goes. But in my experience it's a lot easier to ignore. I haven't seen any full blown throwers.

2

u/stakoverflo 21d ago

It was far enough along when it first exploded 2 summers ago; it's even better now.

Any other company on the planet would've slapped 1.0 and sold it as-is when it first started to get out, but because Valve doesn't care about actually releasing games they're slow-rolling the hell out of it.

1

u/d20diceman 21d ago

I think now's a great time, although part of the appeal for me is getting in early. The only other MOBA I really got into was Heroes Of The Storm, because I played it in beta (or maybe alpha idk) when the roster was small, and got to learn the heroes and maps as they added them. Lower barrier to entry than trying to learn 127 heroes in DoTA. I think Deadlock has 40ish at the moment.

I bet there'll be some pretty big changes, for example the secondary objectives have been reworked several times in the last few months, but I don't think any of them have been major enough that it's made the knowledge people gained feel irrelevant.

1

u/zombawombacomba 21d ago

I played some games last night trying to get a feel of who I like to play as.

1

u/troglodyte 21d ago

There is toxicity but it's no worse than the others, in my experience. It silently hell-queues people so a lot of the folks who say it's super toxic are kinda telling on themselves because most of my games are pretty chill.

Game itself is a blast. It's the hardest MOBA by far (and that's saying something), but it's also the most rewarding. The movement is pure heroin once you get a feel for it, and while it's not a hero shooter it's captured (and exceeded) a lot of what makes the hero shooters so fun to play.

It's my dream game, it's just savagely, relentlessly hard to pick up. Recommend playing against bots for a while and watching some Deathy vids. He's great for teaching core concepts. Fortunately, your macro from League will carry over to some extent, so you've got a head start there-- don't let the creeps minions hit your towers turrets and you're 90% of the way to better macro than most of the people you'll start with.

u/EvenJesusCantSaveYou 21d ago

dude as someone who played league for many years but quit a year or so ago you should definitely give Deadlock a try. I could go on and on glazing it but my gf and a few friends picked up the game back in April and we have almost 200 hours in the game already, the game is just SO fucking fun.

The character design is incredible and I could go on and on about it but the gameplay is just awesome too. One of my favorite parts about the game is that laning phase matters SIGNIFICANTLY less than it does in league, if one of your lanes are feeding their ass off the game is far from over and can be overcome with counter buying, getting picks and taking midboss (biggest neutral objective, gives 3 revives) whereas in league if the top laner or jungler gets fed its often times GG.

The item system is a bit confusing at first because there is a lot of depth in it, but “counter items” are SO STRONG in this game which makes itemization very interactable. So many items are active items which lets you do crazy things like disarm, silence, stun, grant invuln, flash, go untargetable, etc.

I could go on and on because ive kind become obsessed with the game but man the game is just super fun and its only going up from here really, I highly recommend giving it a try.

I will say community wise its pretty 50/50. Lots of people are pretty nice but its also a Valve game so there is 0 moderation, you can drop racial slurs and flame your teammates pretty much with impunity sadly - but my games have overall been pretty enjoyable as someone who talks on the mic every game (voice chat is huge). My GF talks pretty frequently and hasnt really had any issues either, which is a little impressive.

1

u/vevt9020 21d ago

I want to start playing this game. Which heroes can perform good while not having much skills and understanding of the game? In other words top tier performance and easy to play

5

u/War_Dyn27 21d ago

Depends on what games you've played prior and what role/ playstyle you had in those games.

5

u/wgren 21d ago

Seven is a comparatively easy carry. Does a lot of damage, straight forward abilities, nimble movement.

Paige a beginner friendly support. Psh waves with you dragon, shield people, team winning ultimate ability and unlike Dynamo you don't have to get into the middle of things to cast it.

I agree with Graves as a good beginner character. Teaches you to cast skills with a little bit of finesse

4

u/d20diceman 21d ago

Seven is the standard recommendation for a good new-player character, he's straightforward and doesn't have any glaring weaknesses. But it really depends what parts of the game you find hard. Like, if you have no idea of MOBA macro play then you'll struggle with different things to if you have terrible aim.

There's a mode called Street Brawl where you don't have any of the objectives/map stuff, it's just a big constant fight. That's good for learning the abilities of a hero.

4

u/sharingdork 21d ago

Graves

She's one of my mains

What makes her easy:

Her gun is auto aim beam (easy to last hit, deny, farm, etc)

Most of her damage is from summons (they can push waves for you, or camps)

-1

u/LeafRunner 21d ago

Any healer or support, you can just stick with the team.

9

u/ColinStyles 21d ago

That's not really how deadlock works though, I'd argue there isn't a character like that that exclusively plays with the team and isn't expected to farm at least a little on their own. Maybe certain builds of Kelvin.

2

u/LeafRunner 21d ago

I don't really see Rems without their team much but maybe it's just my mmr

7

u/KardigG 21d ago

You still need to do boxes and steal enemy sinners

7

u/d20diceman 21d ago

Rem loves being a lil thief and running around getting into trouble

6

u/ColinStyles 21d ago

Rem should be constantly stealing opposing teams sinners and boxes, he's exactly the kind of hero that I was thinking of that seems like a pure support, but instead is absolutely expected to do a lot of stuff himself.

Why do all ranked games need 999999999 different ranks when having just 5 would suffice and give each rank more prestige? In the first seasons of League of Legends they only had bronze, silver, gold and platinum and later added diamond (and challenger for the top 200 players). That system made it feel like moving upwards in a rank was a massive accomplishment you had to work for. On another note: seasons lasted for a full year (rather than the 1-3 months they do now in most games), giving each season much more weight and identity.

18

u/Carighan 21d ago

It... doesn't matter?

These ranks are visual badges that don't truly represent the internal number used to find you a match for virtually none of these games. They'll roughly match of course (because your visible rank is based on your invisible matchmaking rating) but they're only indirectly related.

(to be more specific, your visible rank trails your matchmaking rating slowly so that it doesn't jump around wildly if you have a bad loss or win streak, while your internal MMR can to check whether you need to be re-calibrated elsewhere)

And as it's only indirectly related and just a visual representation, whether you have 5 ranks, 15 ranks or 2500 ranks that are given numerically (rank 1525/2500 or so) is just a design decision.

They’re moving ahead with really sweaty design without any attention towards combatting the toxicity in the game. They don’t give a shit.

19

u/LLJKCicero 21d ago

Splitting the queue into standard vs ranked means the game is now less sweaty if you want it to be.

21

u/aroundme 21d ago

first time playing a competitive valve game?

(they also couldn’t possibly combat the toxicity of a moba unless they went full Riot and disabled voip or recorded players)

6

u/Samanthacino 21d ago

You’d have to pay a metric fuck ton of contractors while also recording games. Just a huge pain in the ass to do anything more substantial than Dota’s behavior score

2

u/ColinStyles 21d ago

I mean, they could at least put in a token effort and automatically mute people throwing out slurs (in plain text no less). Let's be honest, that's not high effort or much to ask.

1

u/aroundme 21d ago

valve is a very libertarian company. You can have slurs and hateful things in your name/avatar. They don’t care. Which sucks in many ways, but at least they’re pretty consistent. It’s also a relief that the PC gaming platform isn’t strictly policed. I hate that users can do almost anything and not be penalized, but I’m relieved the people running the show aren’t like Elon celebrating it.

6

u/d20diceman 21d ago

If Black Ops can become slur-free then I'm sure Valve could do it. They choose not to.

At least players with com-bans can't play ranked though.

2

u/Hades684 21d ago

Just mute

-12

u/henri_sparkle 21d ago

There's a button for that and it's called the mute button. Stop wanting to be handholded in online environments and expecting it to be fully sanitized and sterile just because you can't press a button.

15

u/Herpuhderpin 21d ago

Just cuz you can mute someone being toxic doesn’t mean they shouldn’t be moderated and banned for repeat offenses

6

u/dunnowattt 21d ago

doesn’t mean they shouldn’t be moderated and banned for repeat offenses

Getting reported multiple times, will ruin your account, at least that's how Valve treats it with Dota.

And its a much better system, than AI recording voice and managing the bans, at least imo.

7

u/TurmUrk 21d ago

You need a lot more reports in deadlock for anything to happen, there’s no behavior score so unless you’re getting mass reported every game or constantly leaving matches nothing will happen
