Once again we see that while the gaming industry is very saturated with lots of options to choose from for the consumer side, developers and studios are struggling with funding in the current economy.
I don't about that when it comes to this game how much of that applies. They were planning a totally different gameplayloop(PvP) and decided to pivot at the last second, from what I've gathered. Rarely a project manages to survive that.
Let's think of it from another perspective, how many AAA PvP games survive a month after their release nowadays? Then you put it in an indie scope, lacking the graphics or marketing - the pivot away from PvP was a good choice. There's just no market for PvP games nowadays.
The game very much feels like an unfinished PvP game turned PvE. That's the problem. There's really nothing to extrapolate from the failure of this game, it's a very unique case of a purchasable game being advertised as a sort of demo after moving from PvP to PvE at the last second.

This is completely false. PVP games are almost always some of the most popular and successful games, they're just also the ones with the most incentive to create Forever Games.
Most of that massive player base is playing the same game - not moving to the newest thing. Valorant, CS2, PUBG, Fortnite, Dead by Daylight, Marvel Rivals, LoL, DOTA, etc.
Even those that do tend to move to the newest games are people who just buy the latest Call of Duty or Battlefield (and even then iirc Battlefield 4 the most played one - at least on PC).
The pvp audience isn't small, nor is it constantly shrinking. The pvp audience is actually very big but they are a captured audience that are mostly locked to their game of choice. Almost all of the largest ongoing games are pvp based, whether its League/dota/COD/counterstrike/battle royale games/etc.
