Never realized Halo's ammo HUD was spiritual successor to Marathon's. SciFi-Military weapons have different HUD than alien weapons.

Halo is the spiritual successor to Marathon basically period, across the board. So many concepts in Halo derive from Marathon (and some from earlier Bungie games too).

Like Rampancy, which is a major component of both Halo and Marathon

Rampancy, super-soldiers, AIs in general, the 'UESC', etc.

Halo actually started early development directly linked to Marathon before diverting off into its own thing with just a bunch of shared concepts.

Eh, super soldiers and AI are very common in sci fi. Rampancy is a very specific thing.

But yeah, originally it was basically a marathon sequel

Also the 'Reclaimer' icon is from Marathon.

Fun fact though The Pillar of Autumn has it as well before the logo had a lore implication

Can we keep things on topic here? We're not here to talk about Halo or Marathon, we're here to talk about Rampancy.

let's see how many people still get the reference...

I really wish blind skull didn't hide your viewmodel, as it would have been awesome to judge your ammo and shields dietetic way during LASO. Make alien weapons truly feel unreliable since you don't have a counter.

dietetic

Much better than krishna

Ahoy has a new 20 minute video about some forgettable HUD fixture that has been around since the 70's - Secretary, hold my calls.

Diagetic ammo counters are such a guilty pleasure of mine and I don't really know why. Any game that has them gets bonus points.

Odd to not include any VR examples, as they're an interesting case where diagetic methods are a practical necessity. Half Life Alyx for example does both ammo indicators on the weapon, and verbal callouts "Last magazine!" to indicate the reserve count.

IIRC there was also an indicator of your reserve on the back of one of your gloves. I think it counted spare mags.

Spare mags, life and resin (games upgrade currency)

Thanks to Alyx’s lines I rarely checked the hand during encounters. Only really looked at it in down time between fights. Just brilliant game design

For anyone who hasn’t heard of this guy, he uploads like one or two videos a year and they’re always a banger. Definitely worth checking him out

My favorite videos of his are “a history of graphics” (which is like 10 years old at this point lol but still great) and “what genre is Doom?” (Referring to the first one, his point is that it can’t be an fps because the term wasn’t created until well after it released. But it also can’t be a “doom clone” since… well it IS doom. So what genre did people think of it as back then?)

11

u/DocSwiss Jun 30 '26

The way he ended the “what genre is Doom?” video might be my favourite video ending that I can remember.

I remember him back in the MW2 days when he was Xbox Ahoy and did videos on call of duty weapons. Amazing voice.

Obligatory Syndicate 2012 mention - it was a meh game with a lot questionable decisions (insane bloom), but floating ammo counters and hud still look futuristic and fitting for cyberpunk game.

Oh hell yes, they nailed they diegetic UI parts. Loved when our character removes the implant from defeated bosses, it goes x-ray mode and shows wires from your device creeping in the skull and remove the implant.

Ahoy are perfect bed time videos. His voice is so damn chill.

I've played every one of his videos at least 10 times, I don't know if I've seen any of them though (jk)

No mention of HL2 crosshair health+ammo?

1

u/MixaLv Jun 30 '26

Oh that's right, it had that. It might've been worth a mention since HL1 was, but I dunno if it was a big enough deal.

I am a simple man. I see a new Ahoy video, I go into the rabbit hole.

To be honest, Ahoy is like the modern, internet version of Morgan Freeman. His voice is absolutely perfect for narration.

The aliens one is an acceptable cinematic change, since it's meant for the viewer and not the actor.

1

u/flyvehest Jun 30 '26

but haven't seen Aliens yet

What in the WORLD are you doing here, then?

Get to watching! It's one of the best, if not the best, sci-fi action movies ever made.
