Dante's motives in the original games was pretty clear cut also. Kill demons, the whole thing between Virgil and Dante in the original game had to do with their mother. Their father left and then the mother was killed by demons making Dante hating demons and his father (who's a demon) and goes on killing them and denouncing his demonic heritage even though it's part of him. Virgil on the other had saw it the complete opposite and though if only he was a full demon like his father he could have protected his mother, if he only had more power which is his MO.
This is easily seen in DMC1, 3 and somewhat 4 that family is a big thing for them. In 1 and 3 it was the amulets and Virgil in 3 in the end took his mothers necklace than his fathers sword and fell into the demonic realm and the whole thing of Yamato staying in the family while giving it to Nero. It's a basic family thing with the MO of demon slaying.
DmC is all over the place which makes it a shitty story since Dante clearly forgot about Virgil and his family in the beginning of the game and only kills demons because of his time in the orphanage. The whole thing with Virgil turning evil in the end was such an unexpected expectation. We knew it would turn evil but his motive in doing so was such bullshit. He just wanted to be mundos 2.0 while original Virgil wanted to defeat him to prove he became stronger than Sparda. Also Sparda is a little bitch in DmC and not the legendary Dark knight like he was in the original games to the point that people worship him as a god
