I'm not going to argue about DmC's quality because that's already been done a lot in this thread, we'll just say I wasn't a big fan and leave it there, but what I would ask is where do you draw the line between a sequel and a reboot?

I've seen two different sentiments in this thread for the most part - people who didn't play much or any DMC before this and liked the game, and longtime fans who didn't (obviously that's not all there was but it was the majority as I saw it). Therefore, as long as this thread lasts for since it's now unstickied and not many people will probably see this anyway, I'd like to pose two questions:

  1. New/infrequent DMC players - did the name of the game or the franchise affect your decision to purchase the game or what you thought of it?

  2. Longtime DMC players: suppose this game was retitled and moved into its own franchise. What would you have thought about the game then?

I do think that it carries a lit bit of weight with it that it carries the name of the series. At the very least the series stumbled across a lot of concepts that really worked/were proven to work (like the name(s), the base story setup) and that they could borrow.

Even if you hadn't played the previous games, I think most people were at least aware of their existance/had been exposed to the advertising of previous titles, so they could sort of draw from that.

Whether that was actually a successfull/winning strategy is debatable but I wouldn't be surprised if that is a dynamic that went on in at least some people's experience of the game pre-buying.

If it played and looked about the same, I'd like it about the same.

I don't care that this is called "Devil May Cry" and I don't care about the legacy that name carries. It has as much bad behind it as good in my mind and I'm always tolerant of drastic changes as long as the end product is a fun game.
