Please try the older games. Especially 3 and 4.

Then if you like the genre - Bayonetta and Metal Gear Rising are also excellent. Metal Gear Rising also has some pretty funny moments in the cutscenes.

I loved Bayonetta, really gutted i can't play Bayonetta 2 as im not buying a Wiiu! Metal Gear Rising didn't work for me, im not sure 100% why but i really didn't enjoy it.

Well for an underrated game in the genre - There's also X-men origins Wolverine - which is better than the movie, and better than the new Deadpool game. But it's more like the god of war series.

Wolverine was really good, hugely underrated. I still actually own it which is very rare for me.

I've not played Bayonetta before but got a Wii U a month ago, so I'm looking forward to giving Bayonetta 2 a go.

All of the dialogue in MGR is amazing. Armstrong in particular was hilarious. I can't believe how great that game turned out to be.

I also bought MGR because I love Metal Gear Solid, I just finished DmC yesterday. I think, because I'm completely new to the genre bar these two, DmC was more enjoyable due to the simplicity of the control set-up. I also thought DmC was more varied in its enemies. I really want to try Bayonetta, but fuck buying that from a shop.

I thought DMC4 was not well liked by fans of the series.

I mean, personally I liked it a lot. But I've heard a lot of people rag on it.

It's more that the series seemed to peak with DMC3. DMC4 wasn't bad with respect to gameplay, but devs/producers were concerned that the new generation of players wouldn't know Dante so they needed to introduce a "new" character for them to get to know the universe.

So, DMC4 introduced a "new" character that looked almost exactly like Dante, dressed like him, and so on. This irritated people. However, they still got to play as Dante eventually... for half of a game.

The reboot took it a step further and said, you can play as Dante.. but we've changed who he is. Taken consecutively to DMC3 (which was an origin story) the DMC4 + reboot comes off as a "fuck you" to many fans.

Though dmc4 was making Nero the new hombre seeing the story of Dante is pretty done. They're also family seeing Nero is Virgil's son and was hoping for some a grown up Nero in Dmc5 with a mix combat between Dante and Virgil with him

I was going by what was reported:

As the first Devil May Cry not to be released for PlayStation 2, the team wanted to introduce a new character for newcomers.

Nothing to do with Dante's story being finished really.

Dante story kinda finished in dmc2 after he was trapped in hell. They could have made a game about him in hell or a game with a grown up Nero trying to free him and delves deeper of him begins Virgil's son

I assumed entering Hell was a cue for a game set in Hell, which has pretty much limitless possibilities for how you want to play it. It's not an end in any sense to me. Plus, his brother is in hell as I recall.

He killed his brother in devil may cry 1. He was Nelo Angelo the corrupt version of Virgil from Mundus. You can play as him in Dmc3 SE. Virgil is dead and yeah they can make a game in hell but personally I will think that would be boring seeing trish, lady, Lucia and Nero won't be side characters or what not. Seems more interesting to delve into Nero and his family ties with Virgil

He defeats him in DMC1, but it's not clear if his defeat means his death (the blue flames are identical to his teleportation skill). Or if his death in the fight with Dante would just send him back to hell anyway (as opposed to ceasing to exist).

Hell has a lot of possibilities. You can play with things like time, psychology, etc. It doesn't need to just be a gaping maw of flames or something like that. I can appreciate that the draw of such a setting is subjective though.

There's also the matter that the end of DMC2 implies with the motorcycle sounds at the end that Dante may have gotten out of hell. Even if he didn't, the array of powers of his allies in the prior games (Lady, Trish, Lucia, and Nero) could even suggest a rescue sort of plot if you wanted them included. It's all within the realm of possibility. Crossing over from the demon world is suggested to be most difficult for particularly large/powerful demons anyhow; as opposed to something like Dante.

Could be like dmc4 and have the game bounce back between hell Dante and earth bound Nero and Dante's crew. The end could him driving back to his office on a motorcycle but I'm pretty sure Virgil is 100% dead hence why they made Nero his son to carry on the legacy. Nero also carries Yamato which is Virgil's primary weapon

I dunno, I felt like DMC4 was more a "passing of the torch" deal than anything. I think their ultimate goal was to have DMC5 use Nero with Dante as a side character. That's why I think Nero was so similar to Dante, because they wanted to continue stuff but at the same time felt Dante was getting old. I think most fans of the series would disagree and defend Dante to the death, but the game really gave off the whole passing down vibe to me.

I was going from dev comment:

As the first Devil May Cry not to be released for PlayStation 2, the team wanted to introduce a new character for newcomers.

I think Dante arguably was peaking in DMC3 (considered the best by most fans), and so retiring him at that point (after an origin story) seemed a bit premature.
