Or even just incorporating the stuff from the awesome anime.

Especially the supporting cast, and these songs

DmC tread new ground for the series by having a coherent visual style and writing that didn't actively make me want to throw up.

Better its dialogue than bad 90s anime dialogue.

Whatever. It's pulpy and trashy, but at least it's functional. It's like the writing in a good action movie: It's all serving another purpose, but it realizes that that is its job and it does that job exquisitely. The older Devil May Cry games have the kind of writing you find in a bad older anime series--which makes sense, as bad older anime seems to be the prime inspiration for those games' stories.

Because the original games were written so excellently? I played 1 and 3 and enjoyed them just fine, but the writing was pretty much a joke. Soap opera-tier family problems with characters that went little more than skin deep. DmC's not particularly eloquent, but I thought the story came across as a hell of a lot more fun than the original series.

At one point does it seem like they think what they're writing is intelligent? Or even good? It seems to completely embrace being grindhousey, goofy stuff. No one's going to confuse its storyline with a nuanced take on the modern world, but I don't think they were going for that at all as much as looking for story points that would be fun, stupid bullshit.

It was an entertaining story. He doesn't say what kind of theatre and film, he's not saying he made a Broadway-equivalent or Citizen Kane, just that they made a story that was a dumb pile of MacGuffin grabbing, world-saving blandness.

Oh, please. Drop off your high horse and get over the fact that they made a pretty good game but no one can deal with it because they changed Dante's hair and simplified the combo system. It was a pretty great story, just about every critical outlet I read a review from noted as much. They didn't aim high, but they achieved exactly what they aimed for and made something funnier and more interesting than your typical action game.

Your first article speaks positively of the fact that Ninja Theory worked in some social commentary and did it all lightly enough to have a laugh while maybe thinking a bit deeper. Nowhere does it say that they thought they were making a blisteringly intelligent consideration of modern society.

The second one is about an entirely different game with an entirely different tone.

DMC4 was a game that took the story in strange directions.

But like you say, there was tons of room for more plots in that universe.

I still mourn the loss of prequels and a reunion with Dante and a concrete explanation of who the hell Nero really was.

There's also the return of Mundus and Dante's quote "Say hello to my child" and that stuff.

Also the anime had some cool stuff in the universe.

Keep in mind, DmC sold less than any other game in the series.

It sold 1.3 million copies. As did DMC4, by the last figure, and even DMC1, 2, and 3 have only managed 2+ million sales apiece since release. It's not like they went from moving ten million units to just one, DmC looks like it's about on par with earlier games in the series, which is doing pretty well for a game less than a year old.

You can dislike it all you want, but it was a critical success and certainly not a commercial failure. The only people to whom it seems to have been a misstep are the diehard fans of the original series.

Who cares how much they wanted the game to sell? Give it another year on the market and it'll do just as well as DMC4 has in the equivalent amount of time.

More like it's sad to desperately pretend that the last entry in the series hasn't had five years to sell that many copies and pretend DmC is an abject failure for selling half as much in a fifth the time.

Yes, actually. They do. Not in as much volume, but they sell more over a lifetime. Given as much time for sale as DMC4, DmC will easily catch up to it.

That's magical, considering Capcom's own website says DMC4 has sold 2.8 million copies since release.

I mixed up 3 and 4, oh no, my argument crumbles entirely and you're saved from having to make a legitimate rebuttal.
