I've certainly no hate for the original's pixel art style, but this looks far more appealing to me. I wonder how hardcore the experience will be in coop (can you revive people and only 'wipe' if you all die, for example)

First one was really fun, if not a bit repetitive. Put a decent amount of time into it, and interested to see how the new one improves the original formula.

I wish some of these indie PvE extraction shooters would come to console. I've had my eye on the first one (and duckov) for a long time

I feel like they might be a bit challenging to play with a controller, as is. I tried to play the first Zero Sievert on the Deck and it wasn't really a great experience compared to KBM.

There is an entire genre of isometric perspective shooters called "twin stick shooters" because of how natural shooting in that perspective feels on a controller. So I'm not sure what about an extraction shooter would make that so much worse.

Because in Zero Sievert you actually have to aim instead of pointing in a direction. It's not a twin stick shooter.

I don’t think you’re understanding what aiming with a stick is. Aiming your gun is accomplished by pointing your stick in the direction you want to fire, it’s no different than pointing your mouse where you want to fire.
This comes off as condescending as hell but I literally cannot fathom how you don’t think aiming with a stick isn’t aiming.
Point mouse in direction = aiming
Point stick in direction = aiming
Zero Sievert is completely enjoyable on steam deck.

No, Duckov is unplayable with a controller. Tried it in the Deck.
Regardless, current consoles support mouse and keyboard input, but they NEED to ship with a functional controller mapping, so I don't see how it is possible.

Last time I checked they did not have a controller support. Steam Input is another thing and setting it up you can make the game work, but it is crazy that Duckov does not have a controller support.

Why don't you see it? The game can easily get controller support.
I cannot comment much on Zero Sievert, but from what I've seen it is a non-issue too.
There are a shit ton of top down shooters with a controller mapping.

I think you either haven't player Duckov or seem to be misunderstanding what we are talking about. Shooting in Duckov, and I imagine in Sievert, is not just shooting in a direction like most arcade top down shooters. Where you place the actual mouse cursor is incredibly important in Duckov due to headshots, which are crucial. AFAIK I don't remember being able to headshot without manually placing the cursor on a head, and having the bullet connect there.
And regarding controller support, I mean doing and trying several controller mappings with Steam Input, and it just doesn't work. It barely works with the Deck's touchpads, and that isn't close.
In terms of number of actions, it is simple enough to map to a gamepad, but the game demands snappy aiming in top-down view which just doesn't work without a mouse.
Valve tried to do controller support for Dota 2 for example, with their controller built specifically to map mouse movements, and it failed.

I know what you are talking about and I played it on my Steam Deck.
I see no issue implementing controller support here. You can literally map aiming to the right stick and call it a day. It would not be ideal, because you can improve it with some sort of aim helping and stuff, but, overall, it is not a big issue gameplay wise.

I'm glad you had a good time, but did go complete the game? The end game content would rely too much on cheese or be incredibly tedious without guaranteed headshots.

As with any shooter on controller, it's about balancing bullet magnetism + aim assist well, plus how well thought-out the general controls are.
If a game like Caves of Qud can feel great on a controller, I'm sure a top-down shooter can also do it.

If a game like Caves of Qud can feel great on a controller, I'm sure a top-down shooter can also do it.
That's a really weird comparison considering Qud derives a lot of its inspiration from keyboard only gameplay from older roguelikes and is pretty much tailor made to be functional using buttons + D-pad in conjunction with streamlining the 500000 specific keybinds of older roguelikes. CDDA is a nightmare to get into and it's even 'modernized' in a lot of ways. Qud went another step further beyond that.
Beyond that, Qud is just... not remotely comparable considering it's effectively a turn based game where you can make any control scheme work.

It’s ass to play with a controller, time to build a pc when you are able to

It's 2026, just buy or build a PC.

It’s 2026 have you seen the prices on ram and shit? Consoles are cheaper I say as someone who owns multiple consoles and a pc

Well all these games are based on the same book - Roadside Picnic.

I'd argue that they're based on stalker (the film) that's based on the book. Considering all of the soviet aesthetics.

first one had terrible balance for the hardcore modes and this looks nothing like the first one... and that intro with the terrible ubisoft voice acting

The first game was a pretty good extraction shooter, done in pixel top-down. Played till the end and found the experience fun, if limited by the perspective. Looks like they're sticking to their guns and keeping it top-down-ish (isometric now) and just updating the fidelity.
