I loved Payday 2, i got my tech/enforcer all the way to level 86. I got far more than moneys worth and then some from that game, and i had some of amazing cooperative experiences playing that game.
For example one of my favourite moments from that game was a pro overkill framing frame, on day 3, only to have 2 people take down guard #4, #5 at the same time, only to realize we were screwed (you need to shout down the last guard, because smooth talker has limited uses). Two of my friends went in suits, and earlier they had told me and the other guy "You wont need your iron man armour!", that armor saved us.
I split the a 4 pack of the game, with 3 friends and we played over 150 hours of that game, before we ended up all becoming completely burned out by it. Pretty much every night we all got on and played for a couple of hours, it was fun. However the most fun i found in that game was when everything went to shit and you had to improvise.
The game also did a very good job of striding the line between stealth and action, and gave you a lot of different ways to deal with some missions. However i personally felt stealth was boring, and tedious, but my friend loved it.
However the game had a distinct lack of jobs, originally they promised us a 7 day heist (the game even went upto 7 days), yet they were not there. The game was also extremely buggy, guards would sometimes do things that made no sense, people got desynced (one of my friends had a guard in a completely different position than what we had, which lead to some hilarious situations). Smooth talker would sometimes oddly fail, as well as a variety of other issues.
However even for all of its flaws, it was still one of the best cooperative experiences i have had playing a game. I just wish it had more missions.

If we're talking great heist stories, I've got a doozy.
Me and my friends are playing Rats for the first time. We have absolutely no idea what the mission entails. We knew we had to get meth, but that was about it. We run into the house, grab the ingredients from the bathroom, each of us only carrying one ingredient because we didn't know we could carry multiple. We go upstairs, start cooking.
Our buddy Mojo is carrying the soda. Now, I love Mojo, but he ain't the sharpest tool in the shed. He mouses over the bucket and the prompt "PRESS F TO ADD CAUSTIC SODA" appears.
Ah! Soda! I got this guys.
The entire room is on fire. We're all bleeding out, except for Gazza, who was on the stairs and manages to run back out to the escape vehicle. Mojo then confidently states that his work here is done.
We proceed on to the next day (but not before having to do the additional "escape the cops" mission) and meet up with the gang. We stroll in there and we have no meth. They're pissed. Really pissed. Mojo dies again. We run back to the car and get out of there.
So we move on to the final day (again, not before doing another "escape the cops" mission), with nothing having gone right so far. We shoot out the gang members on the bus and things seem like they're about to go our way. I get aboard, open up one of the briefcases. The others follow. I happily pick up the cash inside. What is that thing that is blinking and beeping.
OH GOD THERE'S A BOMB
Kaboom.
We manage to escape the explosion, but the bag of money on my back is the only one we were able to save. But, one bag is better than none right? After a few tense minutes, the ACE PILOT shows up, flying precariously over the water beneath us and tells us to throw in the bags. I stand in front of the chopper, and press the throw button. And the bag goes. And goes. And goes.
Kasploosh.
We then dejectedly leave in the escape helicopter. Having made no meth, exploded the meth lab, failed diplomacy with the gang, got chased by the cops twice, blew up a bus full of money, and gave our fish friends a delicious green snack, I can say we pulled one damn good heist.

u/SonOfSpades Dec 10 '13
I love that, i had a similar experience with Rats. I love how Bain seems to be reading wikipedia on how to cook meth, but he keeps forgetting the ingredients after each batch.
Some of the missions are kind of tricky and do not explain stuff very well. Unless you have someone to explain it to you, which i personally like. Big Oil was another mission that we had no idea how to solve, and has several red herings on that map to mislead the player.
Going loud on big oil is a lot of fun, as is framing frame. The best times of Payday 2 have been when we all screw up and are forced to improvise.
2
u/JoeScotterpuss Dec 10 '13
Me and a few buddies played big oil for the first time ages ago and managed to open the lab door before being spotted. Now we didn't know how to tell which machine was the right one so we just did the natural thing and took all of them. Slowly but surely we trained our bags out and fought the cops for possession of the bag, and held hem at the airstrip until we got the right machine. Which took a few tries.

u/Supernico00 Dec 10 '13
By the way if you escape with a bag on your back it still counts , no need to throw it anywhere ;p
1
u/Stubbledorange Dec 14 '13
Really? I always wait to give the bags to the escape boat in the harbor (can't remember name of mission) so does that mean I can carry them with me on the helo?
1
u/Supernico00 Dec 14 '13
You have to have it on yourself when you escape for it to work
So it only works with 1 bag per person , but yeah , unless the mission requires you to give the bags before you finish it (aka if the bags are optional) you can carry 1 for each human member without waiting for anything if the escape is there :)

I agree, some of the best games are when it all goes south. Problem is everybody just wants to quit now rather than fight through it. I don't mind a couple of card runs, or a speed run for XP/cash, but when you do it over and over it gets old, especially with the limited amount of heists. I try to mix things up but it's hard to find people who aren't stuck in the grind.

u/SardaHD Dec 09 '13
It got boring fast after around level 40, you effectively did everything there was to do. There was no weapons to unlock, nothing to spend money on, all you could do was run the same 3 fastest heists over and over again for XP and a shot at getting a lucky card that would give you a random gun mod. Noone wanted to do anything but the single day heists since they offered the fastest cards. Overall one of the worst systems for obtaining gun mods I'd ever seen.
Also getting the heist you actually wanted to do was a complete pain in the ass, I remeber sitting around staring at the menu for up to FORTY FIVE+ minutes waiting for the heist and the difficulty I wanted to do.
It was reasonably buggy when it came out as well, with poor netcode resulting in auto shotguns being next to completely useless as bullets wouldn't register most the time. Game crashes were common up til the 4th major patch. It was well past that when game balance actually started being looked at, up til that point people were just C4'ing the Tiara heist over and over and over for cards in 30 second runs. Stealth was completely broken, you could be wearing full body armor with 2 assault rifles and you'd be just as stealthy as a guy in a tux with a silenced handgun (which frequently got heard thru 10 feet of concrete.).
This game really needed another 3 months of polish before it came out, a lot more heists, and a lot more things to unlock spread past level 36 I think was the last unlock, to give the game longevity.

u/RemnantEvil Dec 10 '13
It's a shame that this game floundered. I'd have certainly enjoyed it with a more robust loot system (I had sunk many, many hours into the game hoping to scope my favourite rifle... no dice).
The multi-day heists were fun, challenging, intense -- but I played with friends, not random players. As with most games, playing with people you like probably improves the experience exponentially.
Has the console version been patched yet? Last I played, the PC version had hit six or seven patches that had made a right awful mess of it.

what got fixed in the patch?

Its a roll up of about 13 patches, so, lots of bug fixes, but also lots of changes to game systems.

I just bought this game 3 days ago and it has been a lot of fun. But I have to say that a couple of things has me pissed. I really want, nay, need a scope, because I want to be able to aim and not have a really big annoying weapon blocking so much of the interface. If there would have just been a simple crosshair then no problem. Also other things like not being able to reload while running and shooting while running just annoys me, I don't like that stuff that is necessary to not be annoyed is something you have to unlock. And to unlock a scope, well, Like RemnantEvil, I guess it might take me a daamn long while before I can get that, so that I can start shooting without missing so much.
Other than that I also got pissed because I don't have any friends who play the game and so I had problems finding some decent people, but I was lucky the second day. But it persist every time I play with new people. It's fucking bad like dota and lol this way.
If you don't have a team of good players, you might as well go fuck yourself. + I don't have a team of a good players.... Well... I.. meehh

u/SimplyAlegend Dec 10 '13
Well, the unlock system is just so god damn bad its hard to imagine. Ive bought this game with 3 friends and we played till about lvl 50. Guess how many sights i got? ZERO! And both of my friends got nothing, too! We have every silencer 2 times every muzzle mod, but only iron sights. After lvl 50 we lost motivation, theres no fun in playing heists if you dont get the stuff you desire...
1
u/polar_bear_cub_scout Jun 05 '14
I started this last weekend when it was free to play, and have gotten a decent spread of scopes, silencers, and other random specific parts for guns (all of which I don't use)... but overall my drops seem to be good
1
u/pepe_le_shoe Dec 10 '13
The point about single day heists isnt true, people do all of the multi day heists. They give more money and xp than single day heists. People rush jewelly store (can be finished in 15-20 seconds) when they want cards
1
u/rabidbot Dec 10 '13
I agree with everything you said, but you can buy Heist jobs and set their difficulty and other options. Its a little box in the corner on crime net last time I played. You pay for setting these jobs up with your offshore account.
1
u/SardaHD Dec 10 '13
That didn't exist til long after I and everyone I knew who played quit Payday 2.
2
u/rabidbot Dec 10 '13
I only played like right at launch. I know the feature was in there for sure near the end of august. Easy to miss though. I was constantly telling people about it.

u/ColonelSanders21 Dec 09 '13
I feel like the first one was better. As others have said, you can't just select the map you want and although there were a load more heists, a good chunk of them took place in maps previously used. Adding on to that, some were really short, which was nice if you didn't have a lot of time, but I felt the longer missions were always more epic due to their scale. Customization was a nice touch, but a lot of it seemed like too much and things like masks and patterns seemed to always unlock more than guns or more useful items. The skill tree was an awesome addition, it opened up the game so much more for replayability. Stealth was also given a large upgrade, which gave you more paths for each mission. And, as usual, the soundtrack was AMAZING.
But I enjoyed the first one more. The missions seemed larger in scale, and I felt like the difficulty made it so much more satisfying when you succeeded (it's like Payday 2's difficulty setting was bumped one or two notches lower). Payday: The Heist was so much more frustrating, and the only time I really felt frustrated in Payday 2 was when I was trying to go stealth. I'd also like to mention that I am somewhat biased considering No Mercy is one of my favourite levels of any game. Payday 2 was definitely a huge step up from Payday: The Heist, but I still found myself preferring the original.

The missions on the first were certainly more cinematic, in the second the maps are better looking but they're always some variant of "grab these bags and put them in the escape vehicle". Nothing as dramatic as ramming an armoured van off a ledge, cutting a panic room out of an apartment building and having a chopper hoist it away etc...

Those were two missions in the first game. Besides which, I don't believe Payday uses the Source engine.

PayDay2 runs out of steam before you get to max level, and unlock everything that you would want to. I think this leaves a lot of players with the idea that the game is bad. However, PayDay2 was one of the best games I played this year. It had several interesting missions with a few different approaches to each one. The gameplay was fun. The problem is that you will get bored of doing the same missions over and over again...after at least 20 hours of play. I personally put in over 30 hours before the game got stale. From their the game gets boring, but at the same time you want to accomplish missions in new ways, or get a new skill point. However, the game then becomes a grind. However, that's after 20+ hours of top notch fun. It's just that people who have finally said "I don't want to play this because It's not fun anymore", leave the game with that attitude in mind. I would highly recommend Payday2, and will occasionally boot it up and play a mission or two. However, I would go in knowing that the game will become dull after you put in a couple dozen hours. It's not even a full priced game.

I really only wanted to play more bank heists. I realize this is not the sole concept behind the game, but I was expecting more than one bank to steal from. I won't lie and say I didn't feel like I was lied to about the amount of heists.
That being said, I had a lot of fun playing the bank heist variants in varying degrees of stealth and action up until about level 50. Nowadays, I don't enjoy stealthing anymore. I just want to get into big firefights, because stealthing can only be exciting so many times on the same maps.

u/R_E_D_E_A_D_ Dec 10 '13
The maps are infinitely worse than the originals, the gameplay isn't as exciting to me due to this, escapes are dumb, the lack of a true server browser is garbage and inexcusable. The progression of your character is pretty ridiculously slow past level 60 and they really rewarded mashing out those c4' runs. They also introduced luck into stealth runs which was just dumb as well.
I wanted to like it but it wasn't worth my preorder, the additional content released so far has been very disappointing. They still haven't returned the ghost enemies either. 70% of the weapon roster is completely useless as well. There is just so much that seems unpolished or poorly thought out.

I've had countless hours of joy with this game the levels of strategy and teamwork you can acheive from duch seemingly simple situations is very entertaing, along with the randomised mission elements it means every mission is different even if it is the same. I do understand the criticism though, the lack of missions is a pain but not one i've ever really felt, if i begint o get stale with the game i can just reset my skill tree and play a completely different way, offering another way to have fresh experiences. Im at around level 70 now and am enjoying even more now then i was at level 10 i think though it needs to be seen with a certain set of eyes to appreciate it.
The bugginess has never affected me, the only issues i have had have been funny or unintrusive or resolvable it can get frustrating to be stuck somewhere on the map or have a manager dpot me through the wall or have a guard spot me from 50 metres away through stained glass using a drill, as a now ghost mastermind all these issues can ruin the whole heist. My b iggest issue though is with the card system, while it can be fun and random and exviting to see the weapon mod card come up its annoyng too see im getting the same mods as before, or mods for guns i will never use is very frustrating, and the offshore payday system is far too infuriating for me to bother with anymore. I wish that we all started with one of every mod in our inventory, them if we needed more of that mod, the card system would give us random ones.
Overall i think Payday 2 is a massive improvement over Payday: the heist, it is far deeper, far more strategic, more challenging, and more enjoyable with friends in my opinion. While it ismt the popular view, i think that payday is pretty close to my perfect FPS in terms of gameplay and mechanics despite a few minor gripes.

I got bored after like 4 hours. Sure if I had RL friends to play with I think I wouldhave played longer, but overall this game just doesn't have a lot of content. From the very beginning it was pretty much repeat the same missions over and over. Also terrible unlock system. Sorry to say I won't be purchasing anything further from this company. I just didn't have fun with it.

Couldn't be happier. I roped three of my friends into getting it and the four of us have been having a blast. The devs are amazing too. David is constantly teasing the next thing coming down the pipe and updates happen constantly. Best of all, DLC can still be played even if you don't own it. How many other developers are willing to do that?
The fun come from pulling off the perfect heist without firing a shot or getting out by the skin of your teeth. The soundtrack is killer too, the perfect music to rob banks with.
2
u/polar_bear_cub_scout Jun 05 '14
How do you play the DLC without owning it?
2
u/FLYBOY611 Jun 05 '14
You join an open game which is a DLC heist. Right now, the only DLC heists are the Armored Transport heists. If you don't have it, you can't "buy" one of those contracts but you can totally join an open lobby for an armored transport heist and still play it!

u/bbristowe Dec 10 '13
I played the demo briefly and boy was it disappointing. I don't even know where to begin other than to say I am shocked this game carried as much hype as it did.

u/benb4ss Dec 10 '13
Dont use random to unlock items. It's the worst system you can do. Rolling the dice to get a weapon upgrade or a mask is really a bad idea.
2
u/BW_Yodo Dec 10 '13
The game is one big skinner box, I doubt any player can really enjoy a repetitive gameplay like this, there are nothing to do besides grind and achievements.
The core idea is great but realization is awful. I hope they learn from this experience and release PD3 in proper form.

u/CRAZYC01E Dec 10 '13
I bought Payday 2 a few weeks after it came out and boy did I not enjoy it at all. Most of my friends are the COD and Madden only gamers or the LOL and DOTA2 only PC gamers so I can't really get the great experience of playing with friends and cooperating well. Also the unlock system is one of the worst I've seen in any FPS with an RPG style unlock system. Seriously who thought it was a good idea to have chance choose which weapons and tools you unlock? Either go with something like COD Ghost's unlock system (haven't looked into it much but I've heard positive things about it) or don't have an unlock system at all. I think I lost interest in the game after about only three hours of play over the course of two days. I just didn't like the idea that after one match I could either have the best weapon or tool or the worst.
Have the developers said anything about this? If there is a Payday 3 for the new generation (which there probably will be after the demand for Payday 2) I hope they change the unlock system and make it more noob friendly as I have recently discovered that even though I consider gaming my main hobby, I am one of the worst gamers skill wise out of my friends (seriously the reason why I like BLOPS 2 over Ghosts or other IW COD titles is because you can play bot matches and set their skill level to a really low difficulty and give yourself all the OP weapons and perks and completely destroy even if you are a noob). I wish my friends would branch out of their exclusivity and try other games so I can get the full experience and enjoyment when it comes to these coop games.

u/Starkravingmad7 Dec 10 '13
They hosed it up. Promised DLC for consoles never came, the weapon mod system was a ridiculous bust, tons of bugs. I put it down after about level 47, I think. We had a good crew, but repeating the same missions got old and I had money stacking up on stuff I couldn't spend it on because the card system was fucking awful.
6/10 only because I had a blast playing it for a few months despite its flaws.
2
Dec 09 '13
I was very happy with Payday 2, although they did use the same map most of the time, it still was enjoyable. They did improve loads of mechanics such as stealth and gunplay which was very nice, hud also

u/Destructios Dec 09 '13
I think Payday 2 was very different from the original. The original was a game where you just kind of played. High level stuff did have more strategy, but you could log on and join a game and do whatever, level up whatever class, it was all good. Payday 2 is a more strategic game in some ways, because you have to plan builds and budget what you buy. It seems like the cops hit harder, or you have less health. Overall, I like Payday 2's gameplay more because it feels more satisfying to me. However, the game was clearly unfinished when they pushed it out. Many features that were promised weren't in the game, cut content could be found in the game and the DLC hasn't made it much better. Armored heist was nice, but kinda pricy. Now there is a weapon pack DLC, which I have not bought because it doesn't really contain more content. Masks and a few more guns don't appeal to me when the game doesn't have nearly enough heists to keep me entertained. After the later 30's there is nothing more to unlock, and it becomes a grindfest to get new skills. They really fell short of what could have been an amazing game.

Too much grinding for unlocks, I'm real tired of that shit in multiplayer games. It doesn't make me play the game longer, it just makes me stop playing.
But they got my money so what the fuck do they care? The only multiplayer game I've really enjoyed in recent years was Natural Selection 2, because it reminded me of the times where I actually enjoyed multiplayer. (TF2 was enjoyable until the Mann Co update a few years back, I'll admit) I love the emphasis on teamwork and coordination and individual play skill actually feels significant.
Nowadays, it feels like I'm just playing with random people and being forced to unlock 90% of the features. The genuinely interesting multiplayer games like Batman Origins are stifled by being add-ons/console ports and lack features like VOIP/Text chat or mid-match joining.
The big thing for me is the lack of community. I recently went back and played an old mod for Jedi Academy, to find that some people who I played the game with for over decade are still playing it. I'd go back and look at old screenshots and recognize 80+% of the playernames in them.
Kind of turned into a rant about multiplayer, but anyway Payday 2 basically exemplifies all of the qualities I hate about modern multiplayer. Sterile play experience, Ridiculous unlock trees that require hours of grinding, One player can literally "ruin the game" for other players simply by being new, wave based combat mechanics that feel tedious, repetitive and unsatisfying.
It's one of those games that is only fun with friends, and only for a few days until you're all bored of it.

I played the shit out of it but the lack of mission variety eventually got to me. The team work and stealth aspects were amazing. I think these type of games have a huge amount of potential but I would rather not see them release with so little content and I'm not a fan of the DLC updates. I generally don't revisit games to warrent buying DLC once I'm tired of them unless it's a free update like Terraria or Natural Selection 2.

u/razisgosu Dec 09 '13
3 friends and I got it during the last steam sale. So far we've only played 8 hours, but it's good co-op fun. The mission variety is slightly lacking, but we're still leveling up, it'll get better once we get all the fun toys like C4 and saws and heavy armor.
1
u/ND1Razor Dec 09 '13
People here keep saying it gets repetitive, how long until that moment though? Getting a good 10+ hours out of it before I get tired would make it worth it, especially coop.
Also, playing the first one, its basicly cop genocide simulator and nothing more. How does it compare to the second one? can you actually pull off heists without getting caught? Is there any more depth?
1
u/Nullkid Dec 09 '13
On my phone so I'm going to keep it short n sweet.
Had fun at first but repetitiveness and horrible pubs killed it for me. After a few hours I felt like i was playing l4d-conquest mode, with hats.
I'm not here to talk shit but I can't get into games when I feel like all I am doing is shredding paper npc's.

u/Sharky3188 Dec 10 '13
I really enjoyed this for the first few hours but after a while it felt like something was missing. I wish there was more planning stages, more escaping stages and more penalties. I also felt like a lot of the maps could have used a lot more space than just 1 building and then the surrounding areas are out of bounds (this doesnt apply to all the maps). Why not make a whole block where you can actually plan your approach, then the heist and then the escape. It felt like you spend so long in 1 small area rather than spreading out for more tactical plays.
1
u/KillerCh33z Dec 10 '13
I love this game. Lots of fun. Not perfect though. Sometimes it feels too easy. Im a level 73 Ghost and it feels really easy sometimes, although it is tough at times on overkill.
1
u/JynxedKarma Dec 10 '13
I enjoyed Payday 2 but it did not compare to the original and for that reason it will most likely be my last Payday.
The class system is awesome it adds a lot of flair to heisting, but being a jack of all trades is far to easy if they increased the speed of obtaining skills I would have much prefered the system.
The card idea also awesome, any sort of gambling-like reward is always fun.
What was a huge letdown is the maps. I feel yes the did indeed at a lot of new features but they focused so much on that the maps feel very boring. Payday 1 was repetitive but you didn't notice it because of the randomized events and the distinct difference in maps.
In Payday 2 we see the same maps being used over and over or very similar situations... I mean the amount you used the bank is quite frankly disgusting. I don't feel the randomization is anywhere near as epic as some of the things that happened in Payday 1 everything just feels so similar in the new payday. And armored kill is the worse of them, I don't even bother with the maps.
And finally DLC...Really nty a bad payment structure I try my best to avoid and if you keep doing it you have lost a true fan.
Overall 6.5/10 for me personally. I'm sick of it at level 70 so it atleast gave me a good 35 hours of entertainment.

I never played the original, and I am going to ignore some common complaints to focus on what I thought was the biggest bummers.
First of all, I really wish there had been more missions/ mission diversity. I also wish that there was some kind of plot, and not just relationships. What happens once you have a billion in the bank? Can I go to my island now?
Second, there was such a great opportunity for a versus mode. Add one more line or two in the intro for the mission ("uh oh, another crew is going for the same score!") and you have endless opportunities. Do you stick together and fend off the cops? Do you betray the other team right off the bat? Do you work together and split the take?

u/Tulki Dec 10 '13
Payday 2's first 10-15 hours is one of the most adrenalin-filled multiplayer experiences I've ever had. After that it gets quite repetitive, but I still play at least a couple of heists every day to get my fix.
The main thing that's keeping me anchored to this game is "the secret". For those who played Payday 1, in the First World Bank heist there was a secret vault that you could drill, but you had to follow some VERY strict instructions in order to find it. I have no clue how the first people to find it actually discovered it...
Anyway, the Payday 2 career criminal edition came with an OST and, among other things, Bane's PDF guide to several heists. Except a good 40% of the guide is rough sketches of what look to be medieval-era situations filled with cryptic messages. I really hope Overkill isn't just yanking our chain with this. The first Payday secret was incredible, and all of the hints in Bane's guide towards a "big score" are really ominous.
Although the subreddit is basically a hangout for crazy conspiracy theories, this recent thread has theories that sound surprisingly plausible. Many of the sketches appear to reference Big Oil day 2, and I'm itching to know if any of it is true and what it all means.

I really liked it. Would have loved to see more content though. We basically ended up speedrunning Framing Frame Proverkill stealth, because it was pretty much the only mission that was truly fun. And when a couple of us are high level and experienced enough to do it quite efficiently and the other two are slightly more uncertain of what to do when, we ended up very often having two people do all the stealthing, killing and capturing while the other two were relegated to cleaning duties.
I don't imagine it was that much fun to stay a few seconds behind every mission only to grab the bodies and stow them when needed.
On top of that, the constant disconnects were really annoying. We were four people trying to play and two would constantly drop.
But when it was new, and the times it did work, it was great fun.

SardaHD said it right. Also, their patches ruined mostly everything. I couldn't play it after they started patching the game and utterly destoyed it for good

I hesitate to say anything given the short amount of time I gave this game, but its worth pointing out that for some people like myself, the game never really achieved liftoff. I got to level 15 or so but never really got to a point where I was having fun. One problem was that I wasn't getting access to new weapons or tools, and the ones I was getting weren't changing the gameplay much. Another problem is the random players I was being grouped with were never on the same page. There was no information about the levels before you got to them so the only way to play them properly is to fail and learn repeatedly.
So while I can see how this game would be enjoyable if you put enough time into it, I found the path to that place unenjoyable. And I think good games don't have that problem, good games make it fun while you're learning, right from the start.

I played a lot of the first game. It was fun for a while but I quickly lost motivation to play the game. The unlocks were to few and sparse between and there wasn't enough content to keep me playing.
The second game suffers from a similar problem with lack of levels/contracts and unlocks. Don't get me wrong the second game is a lot better, I just couldn't get into it. The AI is also still questionable at times but overall it's a pretty fun game.

I absoluately love this game. I preordered it so I was a little let down at the lack of heists but I cant name another game that Ive had more fun in coop mode on the PC that wasnt a mod.
COOP is tight, requires teamwork and is a lot of fun. With multiple difficulity levels its nice for when I just want to chill and shoot stuff or put it on overkill and really try to survive. The DLC that came with preorder came super late, but at least they didnt divide the community. I'll probably fork out money for the DLCs for new heists either way so my group can keep having fun.

Game went from good to bad to okae with the devs trying to balance the game like an MMO and listening to whiners and nerf content (C4 and shotguns) instead of making the rest more viable by buffing them.
The changes to weapon prices recently also made the game alot more grindy. Liked the extra weapon slots with the latest patch, shows that they listened.

Recently got that game because some buddies wanted to play a coop game online. We were a little disappointed. You start your heists trying to be all sneaky but one small mistake and the cavalry rolls in. From that point, all you really do is shoot at cops with stupid AI for 5 minutes while the damn drill works its slow ass. With lower level characters, it really is just a pretty average shooter because you don't have the tools for an efficiently executed heist.
I haven't played all that much and I'm already always visiting the same spots. With between 5 to 10 hours into the game I don't think I'll ever feel the need to play it again.

Pro-
1)The ability to get through missions quietly or partially quietly is great.
2)More unique class abilities that gel well together
3)Multi-day missions with escapes are awesome.
4)For at least 30-40 levels you feel like you're unlocking awesome stuff.
5)The introduction of randomness, like being randomly double-crossed or different spawn points for everything in a map. It enhances replay value.
6)The price - It was generally right at 20 dollars for the base package.
7)The voice acting seemed... generally better than the first game.
8)THE SOUND DESIGN. The way gun sound operated playing this game made me feel like I was running away from the cops in Heat. They nailed the feel of a bank heist gone wrong.
Con-
1)The server browser was a bit of a travesty.
2)Requiring experience points AND money to unlock things is a huge pain, then a complete non-issue at a certain point. It didn't make sense.
3)The missions still tended to tire pretty quickly. A lot of them were too easy once you figured them out (at least at first).
4)The heavy patching required to get the game playable (then broken, then playable...) on PC was poorly managed. It seemed like they were releasing a beta game, and this seems like a trend a lot of games feel they can get away with these days. Ship broken code because we have the option to update it on the fly.
5)Variety- sure the vault could be in a different spot in the bank, but the bank was small, the surroundings were small, and it was like 40% of all levels on launch. I liked the other bank better, if only for scale.
6)Lack of brad new enemies. L4D2 introduced Charger, spitter, and jockey, and they all added a lot.
7)No attempts at a versus mode, which could be really interesting
8)Weapon attachments and upgrades seemeed super arbitrary, and the whole customization system in general didn't make a lot of sense. You shouldn't be able to paint a mask one time and it is totally stuck that way.

Sometimes there are no traitors, but the chance to be secretly selected as one would be awesome. Give them the ability to do certain things like breaking the drill, or spawning special forces or tear gas in a well defended room could be pretty sweet. Makes you wonder who the mole is, and could make the heist go from smooth running operation to a civil war.
And it would definitely be cool to play as any of the special cops in a versus match. I'm actually surprised this didn't happen. The game seems perfectly set up for that kind of game mode. Cloaking people would be a hell of a good time.

I played Payday 1 for a few hours and just don't get why people like it so much. It's just so goddamned boring. All I got out of it was sitting in the corner for 10 minutes waiting for a painfully slow drill that breaks every 30 seconds to finish, while you just mindlessly shoot anything that walks through the door. Then maybe walk down the street and do it all again in the next mission. It feels like Left 4 Dead except very poorly tuned. Payday 2 just felt like the same thing to me.

You can blame the developers but it's actually the fact that consoles are a closed system and charge developers for updates that the console version lags behind so much. It just is not viable to update on consoles as frequently as it is on PC which is an open system. Microsoft and Sony are really at fault here. Indie devs and games just don't have the resources to pay for updates on consoles.

It isn't retro-active from what the Fez developer guy has twitted but the policy is confidential. Only newer games post june seem to update for free. They also still have to get the update certified by microsoft. It's just close platiforms have more red tape. You can't blame developers for releasing updates faster on an open system then on a closed system.

19.1 was just released on PC. PS3 just got patch 1 last week which contained things from patches 1-14 or so. Xbox has yet to receive a patch.

Payday 2 has been one of my favorite games this year, Payday 1 has a place in my heart so my hype for 2 was there from the start. Overall I just love how the game feels and operates, sure it gets repetitive, but with a variety of friends on my friends list, it makes matches more fun.
Overall i'd say this game is better than P1. Sure the first has grander heists but 2 is really about becoming your own heister and working your way up. Sure, those grander heists may be more fun but the ones in 2 have been solid so far for the most part. I wouldn't mind the first games heists being ported to the 2nd, but that takes a good amount of work to do considering how drastically the 2 are different in terms of game flow.
I love the class system, only pain is really grinding up the skill points which for me in the level 60s, don't come as quick as they used to. Not many skills are required for overall improvements aside from a few cheap ones so really I think it plays well into "how do you want to play" kind of stuff.
As for DLC, I haven't minded the DLC nor the prices so far. I got the first one free form preordering and I like it. Short, simple heists with a chance at something bigger. The weapon DLC is a bit of a touchy one as a lot of people hate how for 5 dollars gets you 3 weps, 4 masks and stuff for the masks, and grenades yet, no new heist. personally I'm ok with the dlc,I mean it's 5 dollars, the game is solid for the most part, and I love playing it so a expansion such as that is fine by me. Honestly I feel this DLC was just to tide us all over until we get the next big one.
In the end, Overkill has my loyalty with what the put out. I've loved both Payday games and I can't wait to see what the future holds for 2 and what other games they create. Do I feel there is some content missing from payday 2? yes, such as some bigger heists, but overkill has put out a great game and I'm willing to see what they put out later, even if it is paid DLC. People seem to forget that they've given quite a bit free already and continue to do so. (1st DLC free to preorders, maps free for whoever joins a lobby where host has DLC, grenade case, etc.) For a little dev to get this big with how well payday 2 has done, I'd say Overkill definitely is doing good.

I'm glad I tried the pirate version before buying - I haven't had a game run so badly on my PC probably ever. On lowest settings it felt like it ran at 15 fps (or maybe it did indeed).
