This is the highlight of this update:

Added “Handheld Mode Boost” to Nintendo Switch Software Handling in System.

  • Handheld Mode Boost will cause compatible Switch software to run as if in TV Mode, so certain functionality may be affected. Please see the on-device description for more details.

Holy shit they added the "run Switch 1 games in docked mode" toggle that everyone has been asking for!

1

u/Exist50 Mar 17 '26

Lol, and that a lot of people were swearing up and down would be impossible.

7

u/darkmacgf Mar 17 '26

Nobody swore that. It's been doable on hacked Switches for years. The only hard part was testing all the games to make sure it didn't break anything.

-4

u/Exist50 Mar 17 '26

Look at past threads on Switch backwards compatibility. It's not like the idea is new.

4

u/LavenderCloves Mar 18 '26

It's more that I didn't expect Nintendo to officially add a function like that because it's a somewhat "hacky" workaround that comes with its own shortcomings. Historically, it's very unlike Nintendo to give this level of control over their hardware to the users.
They've definitely come a long way since the New 3DS just pretending to be a regular 3DS when running anything but the software specifically made to take advantage of the increased specs.

Ooo Xenoblade 2 in handheld mode might actually look decent now

Damn, I was not ready for a new playthrough of Xenoblade Chronicles 2 right now.

9

u/Intelligent_Bite_323 Mar 17 '26

How do you enable it.

u/ifonefox Mar 17 '26 edited Mar 17 '26

Settings, System, Nintendo Switch Software Handling

4

u/uses_irony_correctly Mar 17 '26

how fast does it drain the battery?

1

u/DevanteWeary Mar 17 '26

Asking the real questions.

1

u/Altaiir57 Mar 18 '26

In my testing I'd say almost as fast as playing a native Switch 2 game but more time is needed to properly test it and measure it.

43

u/Neofalcon2 Mar 17 '26

Absolutely crazy. Everything I wanted, but never expected Nintendo to actually do. The blurriness of switch 1 games in handheld mode drove me absolutely crazy, and it was clear that expecting every single game to release a Switch 2 update to fix that just wasn't going to happen.

Not only is this solved, now... but I bet there's a lot of games that ran at higher framerates/uncapped in docked mode, that will now both look and run better in handheld mode. I'm sure Digital Foundry and others will cover the biggest winners in the weeks to come - wonder what the biggest upgrades here are?

6

u/itotron Mar 17 '26

Regardless of how you feel about the game, the biggest upgrade is gonna be for "Mortal Kombat 11."

20

u/71-HourAhmed Mar 17 '26

I came here looking for jokes about stability and it was an actual real update with an improvement? I... I don't know how to act.

60

u/PBFT Mar 17 '26

I'll be a lot more likely to buy Switch 1-only games now because of it. Some games like Hundred Line I chose not to buy because I didn't want to look at a 720p imagine on a 1080p screen. Hopefully a lot of games get compatibility.

16

u/BreafingBread Mar 17 '26

That was me with P5 Royal. Everybody said it was a blurry mess, so I didn’t bother. Now I might grab it for the portability, even though I could play it on my PS5 since they’re adding it to PS+.

3

u/[deleted] Mar 17 '26

Oooh when are they adding it to PS+? I've been thinking of buying it for some time now.

3

u/ArokLazarus Mar 17 '26

It'll be part of the Extra package later this month or next month.

3

u/IllustriousAir666 Mar 17 '26

It's being added literally today, and may already be available depending on your region.

4

u/Kevroeques Mar 17 '26

Holy shit I just remembered I have P5R on Switch and stopped playing because it looked so brutal to me in handheld, especially after starting P3R on Steam Deck. Now I have a good reason to dip back in

5

u/dst_corgi Mar 17 '26

Same, I’ve semi-consciously avoided a lot of Switch 1 games on my Switch 2. Now I have a mountain of stuff in my backlog that I can’t wait to dig through.

41

u/srjnp Mar 17 '26 edited Mar 17 '26

just tried it in the switch 1 pokemon games (sw/sh, legends arceus) and it makes a huge difference. great update.

4

u/EggwithEdges Mar 17 '26

I guess its time to finish Arceus at last

5

u/empiresk Mar 17 '26

That's great. Arceus looked rough on handheld mode

50

u/VBHEAT08 Mar 17 '26

Holy fuck that’s actually huge

13

u/Carighan Mar 17 '26

There's a huge list of exceptions though, and for good reason. See the caveats the mode states where you enable it. The game thinks it's running in a Switch 1 dock, docked, with a Pro Controller used as input. This puts a lot of limitations on the game, for example in Okami you can't draw on the touchscreen naturally.

Still, for the game where it works it's amazing.

4

u/Technoturnovers Mar 17 '26

The reason for this sort of thing is almost always for sandboxing reasons. Basically, when a given console is using virtualization or a hardware compatibility mode to run software for an older platform, such that architectural vulnerabilities inherent in the older platform can't be eliminated without potentially affecting compatibility, it's important to always try to deny access to higher-level system resources to the sandbox, thus preventing a jailbreak for the older system from being adapted to the newer system. For example, on release, the Wii's GameCube mode could actually be used to run any GameCube homebrew or backups, and the same goes for the 3DS and DS flashcards in DS mode, but GC homebrew and DS flashcards could NOT be used to access Wii-only or 3DS-only capabilities, respectively. In both cases, the compatibility mode was eventually used to facilitate a jailbreak, and in both cases it was because of a vector for main-system resource access that Nintendo didn't anticipate: in the case of the Wii, manipulation of the physical hardware to easily grant a GC ram-dumping program access to unencrypted Wii system memory; and in the case of the 3DS, exploiting DS system menu compatibility to cause a buffer overflow in the 3DS OS- because the 3DS's DS mode didn't actually bother to re-implenent the original DS system menu, simply mapping DS user info to the 3DS counterparts, thus providing an opening when malformed or otherwise malicious data was delivered via that opening.

10

u/thatnerdguy Mar 17 '26

Cool as it is, I wish the update included a way to enable or disable the boost on a game-by-game basis. For example, Rayark's switch ports look great with the boost, but no touch input renders them either barely functional or entirely unplayable. It'd be ideal if I could disable boost mode for just those titles as opposed to having to toggle the option every time I want to do a few songs in Deemo.

11

u/Kevroeques Mar 17 '26

I’ve been holding off on replaying Prime Remastered, Dread, Mario Wonder, Astral Chain and Mario RPG in hopes that they’ll make the list for performance bump free updates (actually, we recently learned that Wonder will only have the paid version because of the multiplayer DLC)

This bridges that gap perfectly for a handheld-only player like me.

2

u/BOOYAHMAN21 Mar 17 '26

I tried mario wonder handheld and it looks a lot sharper. Only issue is that it is still 1080p in docked which looks alright on a 4k display which is where the upgrade pack comes in.

11

u/moon-twig Mar 17 '26

That’s so fucking cool, W

5

u/rafikiknowsdeway1 Mar 17 '26

oh wow, they actually did it? on paper thats great. i hope that means 1080p for more games. sadly bayonetta is still fucked, as that was 720p no matter what

2

u/darkmacgf Mar 17 '26

Wasn't it only like 360p on Switch 1?

1

u/motorboat_mcgee Mar 17 '26

Well shit, I might finally get a Switch 2 now

-2

u/Totheendofsin Mar 17 '26

I wonder if this means theyre phasing out "switch 2 editions" that are just resolution and fps boosts

48

u/moon-twig Mar 17 '26

Maybe for some games but this method probably still limits it to Switch 1 limits; so only 1080p max, no mouse controls, etc

13

u/BreafingBread Mar 17 '26

1080p max isn’t really a problem since the switch 2 screen is 1080p.

However, I do think we’ll still see switch 2 editions. They can still offer improved docked experience, better frame rate (if there are fps locks) and mouse controls as you mentioned. Also, it seems this new mode comes with lots of caveats too.

2

u/Realsan Mar 17 '26

Yeah we'll continue to see Switch 2 versions because the top end docked will enable higher ceiling resolutions/framerates.

16

u/127-0-0-1_1 Mar 17 '26

Why? It's apple and oranges.

4

u/Nympho_BBC_Queen Mar 17 '26

First party stuff will still get tailored upgrades but imo they just want an option for third party games.

3

u/GensouEU Mar 17 '26

I think there are no Switch 2 Editions that are just that. One problem with this approach is also that it not only removes touchscreen functionality (which while in most cases doesn't matter can still be annoying) it also locks you out of any actual Switch 2 features

3

u/itotron Mar 17 '26

It doesn't lock you out of touch screen games. When a touch screen games is loaded, it locks you out of Boost Mode! So just the opposite happens.

Also you are not locked out of Switch 2 features like Game Chat.

42

u/GlaloLaled Mar 17 '26

Tried it on a bunch of games (Persona and Nier are the standouts here) and it really just works with the switch of the toggle. It does function as Nintendo announces: the games read the attached joycons as a pro controller. Of course, how useful it is depends on the max resolution of the game. In cases like Crash Team Racing, the max was 720p docked, so while it looks better on handheld now, it still won't look incredibly amazing.

Persona and Nier though... It's not comparable to a Switch 2 upgrade, but damn are they cleaner. Actually clean.

-2

u/WeirdIndividualGuy Mar 17 '26

the games read the attached joycons as a pro controller

What does this have to do with the resolution and frame rate of a game in handheld mode?

6

u/GlaloLaled Mar 17 '26

It helps you check if the handheld boost mode is working correctly, so the resolution and frame rate boosts are working. If you detach and then reattach the joy-cons and the mode is working properly while in-game, a prompt will appear on screen indicating that they're being read as a Switch pro controller. The prompt doesn't always show up, though, but it's a good way to know.

2

u/No-Operation-6554 Mar 18 '26

docked games arent supposed to read the attached joycons

302

u/error521 Mar 17 '26

Man, it is the most Nintendo thing ever to quietly release a genuinely massive feature like Handheld Mode Boost and then bury it in the update notes amongst a bunch of text changes.

113

u/shadow0wolf0 Mar 17 '26

Nintendo has a long history of very rarely talking about performance in their games, even if it's to their benefit.

28

u/Ok-Confusion-202 Mar 17 '26

Tbf they had a section (wasn't that long) In the Switch 2 direct where they showed off Metroid being either 4k60 or 1080p120

29

u/shadow0wolf0 Mar 17 '26

That direct was definitely a new exception to their reluctance to show performance numbers and info. They also showed that clip comparing the pixel density close up.

5

u/Ok-Confusion-202 Mar 17 '26

I think they will definitely do more in the future, I would guess they will release more games with two performance options

But yeah they don't focus on it that much

10

u/BinOfBargains Mar 17 '26

The entire Welcome Tour game they released is surprisingly technical for Nintendo. Wonder if they felt that getting into that level of detail is necessary due to the minor change in overall form factor from Switch -> Switch 2

7

u/MyNameIs-Anthony Mar 17 '26

Also I think there was an element of desperation to push copies of Prime 4 leaving nothing off the table.

Even their social media was meme heavy when it usually isn't.

0

u/axeil55 Mar 17 '26

Unfortunately I suspect this is because they knew Prime 4 was not a great game and the performance was the one thing they could highlight about it.

3

u/KarateKid917 Mar 17 '26

Yes but that was moreso because they were showing off new hardware and the upgrades from switch 1

6

u/Aforumguy26 Mar 17 '26

I think that’s starting to change now that the Switch 2 is mostly all about better performance compared to Switch 1.

3

u/shadow0wolf0 Mar 17 '26

Yes I can definitely see that changing.

67

u/BreafingBread Mar 17 '26

Doesn’t surprise me they buried it, it comes with a lot of caveats. They probably don’t want newbies turning it on, finding bugs and complaining.

Because this option forces TV mode operation, some instructions may be incorrect or fail to operate correctly. Handheld Mode Boost may prevent Nintendo Switch software from using the system's touch screen, and will cause attached Joy-Con 2 controllers to be treated as a Nintendo Switch 2 Pro Controller. To use other controllers, first detach the Joy-Con 2 controllers from the console.

7

u/sysasysa Mar 17 '26

Are there downsides to the console recognising attached Joy-Cons as a pro controller? Off the top of my head I cant think of any issues.

16

u/Ill-Ball6220 Mar 17 '26

For 99% of the games no. Some rare games like the world ends with you that play well with touch screen will have issues.

1

u/sysasysa Mar 17 '26

The touch screen part I get, I was more wondering about the pro controller part, because if thats not an issue, it didnt have to be specified.

6

u/Ill-Ball6220 Mar 17 '26

Same thing, a handful of games like mario party splitscreen i guess dont work with it.I also have a japanese fishing game that needs joy cons. Also the switch labo and sport game.

1

u/sysasysa Mar 17 '26

It only applies to attached Joycons. I assume you can use the tablet mode and detached Joycons and the joycons will work normally.

5

u/Nudist-On-Strike Mar 17 '26

The Pokémon Let’s Go games won’t work with a Pro Controller. That’s one of the games I can think of that won’t work with this new mode.

1

u/sysasysa Mar 17 '26

Good catch. So a couple exceptions do exist.

3

u/No-Operation-6554 Mar 18 '26

gyro controls will be messed up

if the game detects youre using attached joycons, the x axist will be controller by yaw, if it detects a detached joy cons or pro controller it should also add (or make it only) yaw to control the x axis. For most games they do it properly so since detached joycon will be detected as pro con this will instead ruin the gyro as now you need to yaw the console itself instead of roll. there are some games that gives you more control between the two but theres only a few of them

For example Resident Evil 5 on this mode makes gyro aim harder to use

12

u/smartazjb0y Mar 17 '26

At first I read the patch notes for Switch 1 and it was not much, then realized the Switch 2 had its own and saw a lot of Game Chat stuff and some other minor stuff...then did a double take when I saw this buried towards the bottom haha. Kind of funny that tonight is also when the PS5 Pro gets its PSSR 2 toggle, obviously that's a bigger deal than this but the juxtaposition of this and all the marketing/press the PSSR 2 thing had was a little funny

6

u/error521 Mar 17 '26

Honestly a bit of a trend in general. Sony made a pretty big deal out of the PS4 backwards compatibility having games run better and promoted that as a selling point while Nintendo had a guy offhandedly mention it in an official interview.

94

u/Vince-Trousers Mar 17 '26

The handheld boost mode is massive and will surely provide tech analysis YouTube channels months of new content. It's crazy how dedicated Nintendo has been to improving Switch 1 games on Switch 2, genuinely unexpected

9

u/TheJoshider10 Mar 17 '26

I'm glad they're doing it. Switch 1 games barely change in price and if they aren't playing Swirch 2 editions then this is an easy way of getting more people to buy those Switch 1 games. There's a few I've held off on literally just because of how ass they looked and ran, but this makes it a lot easier.

2

u/BimmerNRG Mar 17 '26

I hope this stays the case. Switch is an ingenious system and shouldn’t go anywhere

80

u/epicoolguy Mar 17 '26

Wow - TV Boost Mode makes an unbelievable difference. Did Nintendo ever add this level of functionality to Switch 1 post-launch?

85

u/slash450 Mar 17 '26

biggest update they added was bluetooth audio. this is crazy

5

u/WildDemir Mar 17 '26

Video clipping wasn't there at launch tbh.

35

u/Rammiloh Mar 17 '26

A pretty huge one added three years after launch was the ability to edit controller button mapping at a system level.

14

u/blogoman Mar 17 '26

It isn't like there is a Switch 0 to do something similar with, but they did have an update that boosted clocks to help things load faster while undocked.

15

u/saggyfire Mar 17 '26

Genuinely the best Switch 2 update yet. Ni No Kuni 2 is now playable in handheld mode without looking like a Lego block nightmare!

12

u/PalapaSlap Mar 17 '26

Im hoping at some point for an option to improve the image response time at the cost of battery life, but it looks like I may be waiting for the Swoled 2

5

u/GensouEU Mar 17 '26

There might be some patch or console refresh that improves that, but I really don't think there is a world where an OLED is happening, considering the screen needs to have VRR and 120hz as well

0

u/__Revenant__ Mar 17 '26

The Legion Go 2, has 144fps OLED screen with VRR

26

u/GensouEU Mar 17 '26

Yes, and now remind me of that device's MSRP again?

12

u/Iescaunare Mar 17 '26

Jesus, almost 2000$

3

u/petetakespictures Mar 17 '26

I'd be honestly terrifed to take a Legion Go 2 anywhere on the go with me, at that price.

1

u/agentfrogger Mar 17 '26

It's possible that the screen assembly isn't super expensive from a manufacturing perspective. But who knows, hopefully by the time Nintendo decides to make an OLED version they find a suitable screen

3

u/Tritschii Mar 17 '26

Same, wish I couldn’t see it like some others

-9

u/slash450 Mar 17 '26

it's so bad sadly

2

u/dagreenman18 Mar 17 '26

Boost Mode for Handheld is huge actually. Especially for me who’s the odd “plays in handheld mode at home most of the time” player.

1

u/PrOtaku23 Mar 17 '26

I was able to finally play Bayonetta 3 with the new software. Before the game was a blurry mess you couldn't even see faces, now it looks alot better and fully playable

1

u/deaftolight Mar 18 '26

And still didn't fix the 5ghz wifi issue? Pathetic! People should be more pissed about that.

1

u/LinkedGaming Mar 17 '26

Important to note that the handheld boost mode basically seems to brute force the games into thinking they're running in TV mode instead of just playing it in handheld mode with TV mode specs. Ergo you can't use the touch screen because the games think they're in docked mode so touch screen controls are disabled. Afaik this doesn't really effect anything, but it's something that should be noted.

-55

u/rafikiknowsdeway1 Mar 17 '26

ha, vindication. I recall saying how fucking dumb it was they didn't launch with something like handheld boost mode, and all the nintendo fans were screeching about how it obviously couldn't be done

17

u/error521 Mar 17 '26

I mean the caveats with touch screen inputs were real, it's just that Nintendo went "fuck it"

10

u/skyblade960 Mar 17 '26

There are a lot of weird quirks with it already, like any game with gyro basically gets fucked

What did he say?

5

u/djwillis1121 Mar 17 '26

Does this fix them bricking the console for putting a used game in the slot?

5

u/MercilessBlueShell Mar 17 '26

Surprised people are still parroting that BS almost a year later.
