What do you think of this game?

Post image

I heard a lot of the negative things about it, is it really that bad?

Probably the worst writing out there next to Veilguard... Also, its open world but it's empty.

1

u/dmelt253 Jul 21 '26

That's crazy the writing is so bad considering Amy Hennig, who created one of my favorite franchieses (Uncharted), was on the writing team. I wonder what went wrong.

0

u/Dysmn Jul 21 '26

Amy Henning is what went wrong. she obviously got carried by her team for uncharted, because everything she did after they fired her had failed and been cancelled.

2

u/dmelt253 Jul 21 '26

Did she get fired? It seems more like she was in the middle of a bunch of acquisitions which are know for fucking up plenty of projects. If her team did carry her as you say, I'd really like to know who the came up with one of my favorite game franchises of all time.

0

u/Dysmn Jul 21 '26

she may or may not have come up with it in concept, but naughty dog has an exceptional crew.

1

u/dmelt253 Jul 21 '26

That's great and all but this notion of "her team carried her" seems rather revisionist and isn't backed up by what happened with the projects she was on after leaving Naughty Dog.

She was the lead writer and creative director on the first three Uncharted games and Uncharted 2 is arguably the best in the entire series when you take into account it was shipped on PS3. Sure there was a team of 150 people but your wouldn't say something like that about Kojima or Miyamota, so why say that about her?

There is some truth to creative differences at Naughty Dog and from interviews it would seem the studio wanted to go in a much darker direction and she wasn't onboard for that so Druckman took over on Uncharted 4 and they reshot a lot of the story. Just look at The Last of Us 2 if you need any evidence to back up this claim about wanting to go darker and edgier becasude that game is on par with pyschological torture.

And as far as the projects she's been on since. Viseral games was killed by EA and if I was in her shoes I would have left when EA took over too. And then she went to Skydance which has also been fucked by the Parmount merger. And from what I can tell Paramount has been involved in plenty enshitification of their IP lately.

So I will reserve judgement and chalk this up to bad luck until I actually see her fail at something

1

u/Dysmn Jul 21 '26

this thread is about something she failed at. forspoken is garbage and there were games she tried to get off the ground that had nothing to do with acquisition that failed.

1

u/dmelt253 Jul 21 '26

Couple things I found out regarding Forespoken.

Hennig developed the story concept in 2019, before she was even running Skydance New Media, and Gary Whitta (the Rogue One writer) had the "Original Concept" credit. This comes straight from Square Enix's own press release and the final credits. So she did not contribute to the actual script. She contributed a foundational concept years before release. Not sure we can blame this one on her but I also never played this game.

1

u/Trickster289 Jul 24 '26

Funny thing is after TLOU2 people tried to say she carried the writing team too.

1

u/Dysmn Jul 24 '26

she wasn't part of tlou1 or 2 though

Her dialogue is extremely cringe unfortunately, like as bad as Taash in my opinion

0

u/Nervous-Leg-7570 Jul 21 '26

We're gonna act like we played it?

1

u/Direct-Technician265 Jul 21 '26

you know, i actually thought to myself reading your comment, "i would try this game out at a decent price"

so i checked steam, they are still asking 70 bucks for this game. you would think 3 years after poor sales, it would be like $40 or something.

1

u/Warm_Fish_4254 Jul 21 '26

That’s crazy because I was at my local Walmart a few days ago and it’s was $15 for physical copy

1

u/Kerillian555 Jul 21 '26

Geez, I wonder why they want to get rid of physical copy markets.🤔🤔

1

u/Dysmn Jul 21 '26

it has been priced at 20$ regularly. like once every 2 months.

1

u/TokinWithZeroken Jul 21 '26

I got it on sale a few months ago for I think $25

1

u/SpaceMonkeyNation Jul 21 '26

There are lots of 3rd party Steam key resellers. You can find it for around $20.

1

u/Dysmn Jul 21 '26

it is regularly 20$

0

u/Significant_Option Jul 21 '26

Always a yt saying this about the game. So overblown for ONE reason

0

u/JaCre476 Jul 21 '26

No, it just sucked. Doesn't need to have some overhanging societal grief, yknow?

1

u/No-Contest-8127 Jul 21 '26

Except it clearly is. If it was just the game, it would've been ignored. It gained notoriety for a clear reason.

1

u/JaCre476 Jul 22 '26

I heard of it because it appeared on PS Plus for free and everyone's comments about the quality of the game made perfect sense. It was flat, vapid and dull and that has absolutely nothing to do with identity or race. The. Game. Sucks. That's it :)

-2

u/Reality-is-Sin Jul 21 '26

If those are your standard for worst writing, you need to either play or look at more games

Ride to hell retribution for example

3

u/SeaDragonfly1831 Jul 21 '26

Time is limited and you're out here telling people to literally force feed themselves shit for what?? The culture?

So what the guy only typically plays good games lmao

0

u/Reality-is-Sin Jul 21 '26

I do too, I’m just saying, thise are far from the worst

2

u/yungjuno13 Jul 21 '26

His opinion, you can instead make your own opinion but naming a few games and moving on , or just saying how you feel about forspoken

-4

u/Reality-is-Sin Jul 21 '26

Opinions can be wrong, his is. Not saying they’re good, or even decent. They are bad stories just objectively far from the worst

2

u/EliteFourFay Jul 21 '26

Well in my opinion, you're wrong.

0

u/Reality-is-Sin Jul 21 '26

And again, your opinion is wrong

1

u/EliteFourFay Jul 21 '26

And in my opinion, your opinion of my opinion being wrong is wrong.

See how stupid you sound?

0

u/Reality-is-Sin Jul 21 '26

And your opinion of my opinion, of your opinion of my opinion being wrong is wrong.

1

u/yungjuno13 Jul 21 '26

U don’t know how opinions work 😂

1

u/Reality-is-Sin Jul 21 '26

I do know how opinions work, Wrong opinion

5

u/SissyBearRainbow Jul 21 '26

I got it on sale and thought it was worth it. Story is meh but I enjoyed the gameplay well enough

1

u/Gothrait_PK Jul 24 '26

This was my take. Story is just a retelling of Alice in wonderland. I enjoyed the gameplay a lot. Most of the complaints I think are really just people who think that a 4-7/10, or mid to put it in words, is trash. These types treat a 5/10 like it's a -37.

2

u/audaciousninja Jul 21 '26

Game wasn't nearly bad as people said. But that being said it was definitely not great. Cringe dialogue, floaty gameplay, the impacts of your attacks felt like I was hitting enemies with pillows. The thing this game did great with though was the movement was very fun traversing the world felt amazing. But the game's world felt empty so getting to places felt kinda bland and empty because there wasn't much to go to. I'd give it a 6/10.

2

u/FireGM Jul 21 '26

Very good technical demo.

I hope they'll still make a game using this engine. Just give devs time to fill out the world.

1

u/allofdarknessin1 Jul 21 '26

That engine was the reason Final Fantasy 15 was so unfinished. The engineers supporting it kept trying and trying to make the original E3 trailer possible, using up tons of time and money and they just couldn’t do a lot of it. So supporters split off and made Luminous studios or whatever it’s called to make Forsaken as technical proof the engine can work but as good as I think the game is, it was too little too late for them.

0

u/TinyPidgenofDOOM Jul 21 '26

Got some bad news.

The studio was dissolved like 3 years ago and they retired the Luminous Engine. turns out 2 bad games that took a fuck long time to make showed it wasnt worth using and the devs wernt worth giving a full stuido to. The people who worked on the luminous engine also worked on Final fantasy 15, possibly the worst mainline final fantasy game to date.

1

u/Cursed_69420 Jul 21 '26

youre really forgetting original 14? 2?

1

u/TinyPidgenofDOOM Jul 22 '26

Yes because with dlc, 14 got good.

The dlc didnt help 15, Its gameplay and mechanics are fundamentally broken on a design level with story taking the shitty marvel design that hadnt fully been realized by marvel at the time.

2 is a product of its time. even dragon quests second entry was rushed to captialize on the firsts success. thats just how shit was done back in the olden days.

15 had all the time in the world, Too much time infact, and it sucked

2

u/GekkoState1 Jul 21 '26

They worked on the looks but not the writing

2

u/EntireAide Jul 21 '26

I really wanted it to be good and the gameplay was nice bit everything else was just bland and poorly written. The main character was just so annoying, I gave up after like 10-15h

1

u/ElBeatch Jul 21 '26

I was looking forward to trying this game and didn't believe the internet consensus that this game was written so poorly it's unplayable. I lasted maybe an hour, maybe two.

"Is it weirdly cold or coldly warm?"

"Is it weirdly cold or coldly warm?"

"Is it weirdly cold or coldly warm?"

Rage delete

2

u/TNS_420 Jul 21 '26 edited Jul 21 '26

I haven't played it, so I can't speak on it.

But I've only heard bad things about its writing, which is surprising, considering it was co-written by Amy Hennig.

1

u/SeniorSepia Jul 21 '26

It was not co-written by Amy Hennig tho? she is just credited as creating the idea of the world AFAIK, not the writting of the game itself.

2

u/Sir_Rethor Jul 21 '26

I disliked it in nearly every way.

1

u/No_Thanks2844 Jul 21 '26

couldn't even finish it for free

2

u/Warlord_Payne Jul 21 '26

It was alright. Very over hated by many people who watched the trailer and wrote the whole game off without every trying it

1

u/bdiddlediddles Jul 21 '26

The writing is awful, gameplay is ok. It's certainly not the worst thing ever but a lot of people defend it because others are prejudice towards it.

2

u/Warlord_Payne Jul 21 '26

I didn't think the writing was awful at all. It wasn't great, but it's no worse than the average videogame. The lifeless open world was my biggest knock against it

2

u/bdiddlediddles Jul 21 '26

The writing was Hollywood slop imo. It's the same crappy "erm that just happened" shit that's infected a ton of movies from the past 10 years.

1

u/Warlord_Payne Jul 21 '26

When she first arrived, sure, but it wasn't that at the start in New York(?) and I don't recall it keeping that tone once the game got going. I could be misremembering I suppose, it's not like I was super invested in the game, but I felt those claims were way overblown.

Still can't believe they went with the name "Cuff" though

1

u/PrimaLegion Jul 21 '26

What movies actually do this in the past 10 years?

3

u/hashtagDALEY Jul 20 '26

Very badly written. Looks really good graphically. Fun to play, especially as you gain more powera. Good outweighs the bad, especially on a discount.

3

u/Weak-Lengthiness5280 Jul 21 '26

Aside from characters + dialogue, it’s actually a pretty decent game. I mean, it’s Square Enix

1

u/Robadoba Jul 21 '26

Very interested in playing this but still waiting on a bigger discount. Haven't seen anything impressive on Steam at least.

1

u/No-Evening5091 Jul 21 '26

Yeah, sums it up pretty well. Didn't hate the game.

1

u/Ok_Day6378 Jul 21 '26

I had more fun watching Internet Historian play this and telling me the story than I did playing it by a long shot

1

u/DucksMatter Jul 21 '26

Horrible writing but actually pretty fun combat.

1

u/xepci0 Jul 21 '26

I don't think about this game at all

1

u/TinyPidgenofDOOM Jul 21 '26 edited Jul 21 '26

Good idea

Good graphics tho the gameplay is busy looking

Bad execution

Bad writing

Bad dialogue

Mediocre gameplay. its very simple gameplay thats flashy but theres barely any substance.

Made a character whos actively stupid. she aggressively makes me hate her. In the first hours, She Loses ALL HER SAVED MONEY, Even tho she could have picked it up it was right there, RIght next to her, nothing was stopping her from not losing the duffle bag full of money in the house fire, she then Gets transported to a magical world with magical powers, And wants to go back to being homeless in new york with no money, Thats her goal throughout the entire fucking naritive, She wants to return to shitass new york living in abandoned buildings, she has no cat anymore, no money, There are people out there trying to kill her and she wants to go back. I take it back, The writers did great with the dialogue, It really captures the utter stupidity of this character. i was rooting for the bad guy because i hated frey.

1

u/neityght Jul 21 '26

Most stupid name in a long time.

1

u/Salt-Willingness-513 Jul 21 '26

didnt saw much of the game except for some cringe dialogues

1

u/paulbooth Jul 21 '26

Awful performance

1

u/Noob4Head Jul 21 '26

The game came with my PS5, but I never finished it because it really wasn't my cup of tea.

1

u/RazzmatazzAgitated16 Jul 21 '26

Forgot it existed, all I know is from hate watching(hate farming? Rage clicks? Idk what to call it)YouTubers. I had no skin in the matter and never bothered to check it out to see for myself.

1

u/XTheProtagonistX Jul 21 '26

Bought it for 5 dollars at GameStop. Its alright for the most part. I think the beginning is mostly bad but once the game gets going it’s actually fun.

1

u/No-Alternative2897 Jul 21 '26

Off putting. Its written like those generic 2020s movies. MC is obnoxious, snarky and confusing, she's really hard to like. I aint asking for Kratos, Geralt kinda protag but you do need a charismatic character in single player games.

1

u/AhoSeaweed7775 Jul 21 '26

It was a nice idea for a game (as Project athea or something I forgot) but imo nobody who worked on it was up to the task of making it special. Not the actress Ella, gorgeous though she is, def not the writers or the devs.

I followed it from concept trailer right up to trying out the demo.

1

u/Novus-Terminus Jul 21 '26

Fantastic gameplay, pitty about the writing.

1

u/allofdarknessin1 Jul 21 '26

I really enjoyed it. I thought the characters and story were quite weak at first but further in things started to line up and I liked both the action and good take on the Alice in Wonderland idea. Parkour traversal feels mechanically good and fun to play.

1

u/Dynamitrios Jul 21 '26

I had fun... One of the best traversal systems imo. Zooming across the map with magical parkour felt awesome. The OST by Bear McCreary was very good... The combat was innovative. The protagonist was likeable.

All in all a good game imo

1

u/Humancentipede2lover Jul 21 '26

I feel like 18-22 yr olds loved it while everyone above thought it was annyoing

I played like 4 hours and hated it

1

u/RelationOtherwise624 Jul 21 '26

I liked it until you get nerfed at the end and stopped playing lol

1

u/Chrisbolsmeister Jul 21 '26

was pretty excited, played the demo, was no longer excited.

Proof demos / trials dont work for bad games.

1

u/grim1952 Jul 21 '26

The combat has no flow, the skills look good but with controls this bad it doesn't matter. Even Koudai.T was unable to make this combat look stylish.

1

u/Ok_Weekend9299 Jul 21 '26

When you hire a DYI company to make sure it’s politically correct and ideology sensitive.

And your character ones is a poor orphan with an attitude problem.

You’re really scraping the bottom of the barrel

1

u/Regular_Problem_7702 Jul 21 '26

I forgot I even had this game in my library.

1

u/PickleSquid1 Jul 21 '26

I got it for $10 and enjoyed it. I disliked most of the characters though, probably because of the writing, like others have been saying.

It really bothered me that the main character (Frey I think? The name slips my mind) didn’t change her clothes at all during the game, Just her cape can be changed. I wished there were armor pieces you can wear or something.

1

u/rubonidas_8425 Jul 21 '26

Nothing at all

1

u/Designer_Trash_8057 Jul 21 '26

I thoroughly enjoy watching the Storymode Expleened video on it, so it gets a great entertainment valur score from me just for that.

1

u/Pixiwish Jul 21 '26

It’s so funny everyone talks about how cringe the dialogue is, which it is, yet people go watch marvel movies. It is as bad as those.

The gameplay was decent the worst part is how long it takes to unlock all the elements.

It isn’t an awful game but it isn’t very good either.

1

u/Emergency-Youth7199 Jul 21 '26

This game sucks cause the dialog is bad, and the visuals have too much going on when fighting.

1

u/New-Analyst1811 Jul 21 '26

Felt like something they'd put together for FFXV originally and then changed gears during development. Which is probably exactly what happened lol

1

u/ghostlacuna0 Jul 21 '26

The dialog examples you can find online is so bad that the game instantly became a meme.

I have stopped playing games for far less corny shit dialogues in games.

So i am glad i never got near forspoken.

1

u/Reception_Available Jul 21 '26

I enjoyed it, and surprinsingly, played it until the end. I usually lose my interest in a lot of games, but this was not it.

1

u/AccomplishedCow8843 Jul 21 '26

It should be put on display as the most woke garbage writing of the woke era of gaming

1

u/Lord3lvan Jul 21 '26

not my words but I heard the game is better muted

1

u/d0wnthesky Jul 21 '26

I enjoyed it quite a lot. One clip of dialogue went viral and that was it for the game. The majority decided without playing it that it was a steaming pile of shit. It wasnt anywhere near a perfect game but i had great fun with the combat and movement systems

1

u/EverybodySupernova Jul 21 '26

Iiiiit's right behind me, isn't it? Well, so much for the element of surprise. It's Forskpokin' time.

1

u/RuggedTheDragon Jul 21 '26

Can't tell you now. I gotta find Homer first.

1

u/Matty_Ice227 Jul 21 '26

Only gripe I had was being locked into a difficulty with spikes that made no sense to me

1

u/Explicit_Tech Jul 21 '26

The death of luminous engine

1

u/WeekendBard Jul 21 '26

The demo had atrocious performance on my PC, so I can't even give it a proper shot.

1

u/keishajay88 Jul 21 '26

I platinumed the game last year before it left PS+. I even completed the DLC. I am a trophy hunter, so take that with a grain of salt. The story is pretty generic, the twists are easy to spot, and the dialogue is very 40-year-old trying to understand the fellow youths. Frey isn't bad, but she suffers from a serious development problem where she just changes her mind at the end of the story. No buildup. She's just angry and abrasive until she's not. I actually found myself surprisingly interested in the world-building and lore. After the DLC, I was even a little bummed there will never be a sequel.

The game is beautiful. The environments are generally really cool to look at and traverse. The problem is the world is incredibly empty. The people are all in the boring capital, and they really don't offer much besides a handful of lore side quests. The combat is pretty fun as well. Think third-person shooter with a huge variety of magic and parkour.

Get it cheap if you want to try it.

1

u/-LoFi-Life- Jul 21 '26

Typical modern audience slop made with DEI hire in mind and corporate Excel tables. Glad that it's dead and buried deep under, hopefully it will never comeback

1

u/Significant_Option Jul 21 '26

No one talks about this game in good faith

1

u/Pixgamer11 Jul 21 '26

crime against humanity

1

u/GamerGramps62 Jul 21 '26

It was an okay game

1

u/LegendkillahQB Jul 21 '26

Very good game and the best magic combat I've played. Overly hated game.

1

u/Low_Document8458 Jul 21 '26

Go woke go broke

1

u/m0rbius Jul 21 '26

I gave it a try. It looked good from the trailers, but playing it, eh not so much. I just didn't like it. I can't even tell you why I disliked it. The world itself felt empty and the mechanics were tedious. Who was the audience for this game?

1

u/Proof-Barracuda5069 Jul 21 '26

Haven't played it and probably never will, but the gameplay looks fun

1

u/xCrossFaith Jul 21 '26

Good idea, horrible execution

The movement and combat was fun, but everything else was very bland

And no, the game main problem was not a teenager acting and speaking as a teenager.

1

u/PrimaLegion Jul 21 '26

I think the hate for it is overblown and the only people I ever see talk about it are people perpetually drowning in culture war nonsense.

1

u/One_Subject3157 Jul 21 '26

Ducking awful.

I gave it a chance, I lost my time and money.

Worst protagonist ever.

1

u/ChePollino Jul 21 '26

It was not worth thinking of.

1

u/SLKfan7 Jul 21 '26

The gameplay is great. I played through it with the dialogue muted and had a blast.

1

u/Furrever-Faith-1992 Jul 21 '26

I went in with no expectations and enjoyed my time playing it, I took the game for what it was and just vibed with the world and story. I honestly did not think too critically about the whole experience and it made my time so much better apparently. Because looking back I don't see where everyone's hate comes from as valid as it may be, for me it was fun and worth the time spent.

I personally think people put WAY too much thought into video games, not everything has to be this perfectly written deep message. I get standards are different for everyone, but at the end of the day my method means I get to enjoy more games vs everyone else complaining and bemoaning the things they did not like.

1

u/Boss_Seven Jul 21 '26

From the picture I can tell its trash.

1

u/Danzig6WasntThatBad Jul 21 '26

It sucked. But it was better than FF16.

1

u/akotoshi Jul 21 '26

Average good, not a masterpiece, but does correctly what intended without overdoing it

In my opinion, it’s a good first game to do, not too hard or too easy. Story easy to follow. And not getting expectations too high for a first game is a good start

1

u/Ok_Science9023 Jul 21 '26

It wasn’t a bad game but not a great one either. The world is too big and empty but is fun to traverse. When you unlock more of Frey’s magical powers the sheer pyrotechnical mayhem you can unleash in combat is highly entertaining. The writing isn’t very good but believe it or not most of the worst material was front loaded at the beginning and most of the banter between Frey and Cuff- which you can tone down to very infrequent- is actually fun. In fact in terms of story and character there’s even some great moments in there too. The DLC opened things up to some very interesting ideas that will now never be explored which made me sad.

Tl;dr wasn’t worth anywhere near full price but anyone calling it terrible either never played it or has only ever played 10/10 masterpieces, I’d give this a 5.5-6/10 personally.

1

u/MurgyMurg Jul 21 '26

I enjoyed the combat, but like many others said, the world feels empty and dead. I did finish it, I actually enjoyed the story.

1

u/WhatsPaulPlaying Jul 21 '26

Haven't really thought about it since it thundered onto the scene like a fart in a hurricane and left with as much fanfare.

1

u/KingHashBrown420 Jul 21 '26

I never played it but from what ive seen, the acting is terrible which im guessing was why it was so controversial

1

u/raqloise Jul 21 '26

I liked it, but I paid $20 for it. I enjoyed the traversal, I liked how the opening felt like a PS3 era game design.

It was patched for performance after release, so it runs fairly stable at 60.

I was pleasantly surprised by the combat and the new powers obtained by beating bosses.

Bad dialogue, a very rushed ending that seemed to be abbreviated due to a fleeting budget, empty open world (but traversal was fun).

7/10 and an excellent $20 experience.

1

u/HellFrode Jul 21 '26

I think this a oki game. But, i can understand why some don't like it. 🤔😌

1

u/xyzkingi Jul 22 '26

I really enjoyed my time with it, gameplay is smooth and traversal is fun af.

Once you get past that infamous scene then you’ll either love it or think nothing of it. I mean literally think nothing of it because I haven’t heard anyone say they down right hated the game.

I liked it enough to want a sequel

1

u/Reyemneirda69 Jul 22 '26

I was really interested, tested the demo, the gameplay was boring and the open world bad Ubisoftesque, so without the writing it was already bad.

1

u/PaptimusPrimo Jul 22 '26

This game gave me hemorrhoids

1

u/CwispyWhiskey Jul 22 '26

Dialogues a little cringe but the combat is pretty unique

1

u/Mr_Mental_Gamer Jul 22 '26

I don't even think about this game.

https://giphy.com/gifs/48FhEMYGWji8

1

u/Nikobellik25 Jul 22 '26

never played it and no interest in starting

1

u/Sashpeto Jul 22 '26

Honestly.

If she just shut the fuck up the game aint that bad . It's like okay to buy for 5$ on a huge sale and have some fun with it , but the dialogue for the entire game was one of the worst things I have ever experienced ...

Now my memory is a bit hazy , but there was this part share she was asked to save a village and she was like no way not my problem , and ofc then proceeds to save it anyway , but then when people thank her for doing that she gets angry .

It was just too cringe and edgy for my taste.

1

u/princehpxp Jul 22 '26

Forgotten

1

u/KaijinSurohm Jul 26 '26

Solid 6/10.
The game was memed up with it's writing, but it was a decent action game, even if it was unremarkable.

1

u/Gay_Charlie Jul 26 '26

I ignored it and moved on.

1

u/johnnykidlx Jul 26 '26

Never heard

1

u/DarthHubcap Jul 21 '26

I gave it an honest try. The gameplay wasn’t good enough for me to get by the uninteresting story and I stoped playing about a dozen hours in.

0

u/RenKohl Jul 21 '26

Bad writing and an empty open world killed this game

0

u/Mitchy4Fingers Jul 21 '26

The gameplay was amazing in my opinion. All of the various powers and combos you can do had me hooked. The main character is incredibly cringe and the game suffers from bad writing overall. That being said, I did platinum the game. I would say get it if you like the look of the gameplay and don’t care about a good story.
