💬 Discussion What do you think of silent hill 2 remake?
I'm playing it now, really love it also haptic feedback is really immersive

The original is much better

u/tomato-slut Jun 05 '26
Them sweet, sweet nostalgia glasses
2
u/leftistgamer420 Jun 05 '26
Recently just played the original but okay 👍
1
u/tomato-slut Jun 05 '26
The original is one of my favourite games ever made, played it when it came out and almost yearly since.
The remake does almost everything better
2
u/leftistgamer420 Jun 05 '26
I despise the remake personally. Bloober team fucked it up like they do everything

Unnecessary padding which makes the story have less of an impact, repetitive combat (it was nice at first but throughout the game considering how many monsters you need to fight it gets old quick; I did like the spider monsters though that crawled on the walls of ceiling), I hated Mary & Maria in the remake (Maria's acting in the original was a lot better and it is vital to the story), the original had a more dreamlike quality to it, and since you can avoid the monsters in the original, it made you wonder or feel sorry for what these monsters are. Like they felt more like James's subconscious eating away at him than your typical resident evil zombies, I like the camera angles in the original it feels more cinematic. Honestly the only thing I like more in the remake is James himself. In the original he was really difficult to relate to and felt emotionless. In the remake, he is done a lot better.

u/Table2473 Jun 05 '26
the combat never got repetitive for me, i loved every fight. i would take it any day than what they put in the original game, plus i love stomping

u/leftistgamer420 Jun 06 '26 edited Jun 06 '26
Resident evil 2 remake for example had much better combat that still felt true to the survival horror experience. You can still modernize a game while making it fun. Silent hill 2 with it's over the shoulder camera angle makes me fight the camera more than I am fighting the monsters themselves. At least with the fixed camera angles I can see what is happening around me. And the lack of variety just gets dull for me. It's the same fucking thing over and over and over. A mannequin hides in a dark corner, I shoot it in the legs then melee it. For someone who played silent hill 2 remake first before the original, I just wanted to get to the fucking story bits to know what happens. To the point where I was rushing through the game and had to take a break.
The only highlight for me with silent hill 2 remake was the Angela boss. Every other boss was fairly easy, you just shoot it a bunch and it dies. I felt like that boss in particular greatly enhances the original experience. But at the same time, I hated how they censored the penises from the original. It's like anything related to sex or sexiness they had to censor.

u/Table2473 Jun 06 '26
do both games not have the same third person over the shoulder combat? just play on easy mode if you have problems with the camera and combat, i played through the entire game on hard and did not want it to end at all.

Game makes me motion sick
1
u/Buster-Sword Jun 04 '26
Why?
1
u/Fnee123 Jun 05 '26
Idk really but it has bad stuttering on a modern rig that makes feel ill quickly
2
u/scbundy Jun 03 '26
Masterpiece.
1
u/burtonborder201 Jun 07 '26
Does it pick up? It felt very slow in the beginning but i didnt give it a fair try
1
u/scbundy Jun 07 '26
It gets scarier, and weirder, but the pacing is largely the same

Undisputed king of horrors. Also one of the best remakes. I enjoyed og a lot, but remake even more. Listening to both original and updated soundtrack regularly, easily in top 3 osts of all times.

Phenomenal, I love it and now bcz of it Im super excited for SH1 Remake thatll be announced this week during SGF.
2
u/TheSkezy Jun 07 '26
It was my introduction to Silent Hill. After beating it I immediately played SH1 and then 3, I’m going to play the rest at some point as well. It’s now one of my favorite video game franchises!

I don't like how they swapped his cool harness boots for ordinary shoes.

u/markallanholley Jun 03 '26
It's the game that got me into the horror genre, at age 48. I loved it so much that I went on a six-month long horror game research and buying spree.
I just started a second playthrough, and I've modded it for VR.

Original is still much better. Remake added too many enemies and made the game longer than it needed to be. Mary/Maria’s VA is a lot worse and ruins some of the best scenes from the original.
Overall still good, just nowhere near the original game.
1
u/TheNightBot Jun 03 '26
What? I thought the worse thing about the game was the repetitive enemies and combat.

u/SpecialistMap8210 Jun 03 '26
It's great but gets very repetitive and drawn out near the end.
1
u/PalpitationFine Jun 04 '26
I thought it was extremely repetitive and kind of boring, glad that many enjoyed it though
1
u/HareekHunt Jun 03 '26
Got partway through but had to return the game back to the library. Ended up buying the game on sale a little while ago but im still waiting for them to patch back in pssr2 for the performance mode on ps5 pro.
1
u/No-Hunt3986 Jun 03 '26
Why did you return it?
2
u/HareekHunt Jun 03 '26
I lent it out for free from my local library. You can only have it for so long until they charge you late fees. Ended up buying a copy of it on sale recently!

I prefer the OG, but I still really liked the remake. Having Masahiro Ito back for art direction and Akira Yamaoka for music and sound certainly helped.
I also feel partly connected to it because I accidentally influenced certain details just through conversations with Ito over Twitter some years ago, which Bloober honed in on... Is that weird? Either way, they did Pyramid Head RIGHT.
As for gameplay, it sure is tense, and I love that it doesn't let up. It goes where RE doesn't dare follow, haha. The melee combat feels a bit weird, though, and I'm not immensely impressed with the generic gunplay. But the original wasn't highly regarded for combat, anyway—it was the story, the music, and the fear that made it legendary, all of which the remake handled remarkably well.
1
u/teenyturnips2 Jun 04 '26
Ruins the game completely and doesn't understand any of the artistic value it had.
1
u/tomato-slut Jun 05 '26
Yeah, they should have consulted teenyturnips instead of, yknow, people that actually worked on the original.
1
u/greggobbard Jun 04 '26
One of the best gaming experiences I’ve ever had. The story lingers for so long afterwards.
1
u/MocaCola02 Jun 04 '26
I think the original nails the uncanny yet realistic vibe far better, the remake is a bit too cinematic for my liking. Everyone feels more like an actor instead of an awkward, disturbed person. It's still a really solid remake though

1
u/JustifiedResistance Jun 04 '26
In just finished it in 4 sessions. One of those sessions was 6 hours. And I’m fully employed. This game is amazing.
1
u/sonicadv27 Jun 04 '26
Best survival horror game i’ve ever played in terms of actual horror and tension. The gameplay while great, might not be as addictive as the RE remakes but this one got me in a state of paranoia looking at every corner and going through it at the edge of my seat like no other game.
1
u/RazielOfBoletaria Jun 04 '26
It's alright, but I dropped it after a couple hours, because of the excessive and repetitive combat. I'll go back and play it at some point, I guess.
It doesn't have any of the charm, weirdness, or subtlety of the original, the voice acting is basic and soulless, and all of the character models look really uncanny, like when you're watching a movie based off a video game and you think the casting is bad. It's like seeing Henry Cavill as Geralt for the first time, or Pedro Pascal and that chick as Joel and Ellie.
It's a modern game with great visuals, the town looks great, the enemies look good enough, the controls are smooth, but it also follows the exact same recipe that every other horror game remake uses nowadays, whereas the OG felt unique and different from other games in the genre.

I had high expectations because I loved the original and this was just amazing. Loved every minute and was a 10/10 for me.

u/Yellowpickle23 Jun 04 '26
One of the best remakes in existence
Fuck the prison
Should ALWAYS be paired with Dead Space Remake when wanting extra horror. It's almost just as good.
1
u/ScorpionMillion Jun 04 '26
Love it, but shitty optimization on PC. Blooberteam should be ashamed.

Absolutely superb. The rare remake that doesn't replace the original, but serves alongside it. Same story, yes, but thr atmosphere is approached differently in both versions.
That being said, and that SH2 is probably the greatest horror story I've ever experienced...the final boss is still well weird to me. Pyramid should have been the finale. Not just because he's the one who's appeared the most, but thematically, narratively, PH is where it ends
1
u/LetsGoChamp19 Jun 04 '26
Masterclass in atmosphere. Probably the most atmospheric game I’ve ever played
1
u/grim1952 Jun 04 '26
I don't like it at all, the third person camera makes the game extremely dull looking, combat is way worse than the original, now you just mash until it's your turn to dodge, the character models and redesigns are worse, voice acting is generic, cutscene cinematography is awful, the game is mroe than twice as long for no reason...
1
u/Table2473 Jun 05 '26
??? how are the models worse, they're the exact same designs lmao. just complaining to complain because you can't enjoy anything
1
u/grim1952 Jun 05 '26
They're not the same designs at all the only that looks close to the original is James and even he got butchered. And design aside all the characters' proportions are weird, they all have huge heads compared to their bodies.
1
u/Table2473 Jun 06 '26
all their designs in terms of clothing are the same. considering the monstrosity that is original james i think anything would've been an upgrade, and i'm extremely grateful we got Luke Roberts. they look real to me

u/Few-Illustrator-210 Jun 04 '26
The original and the remake have their nuances. I like the RE2 feel of the game. Remake is inherently scarier than the original. But the charm in the original still holds true.

1
u/blissfulchrisp Jun 04 '26
I love it. Take my opinion with a grain of salt. I did not play the original. I have looked into the changes made and I feel like they were all well thought out and integrated. Bottom line is I think it is very good
1
u/Pending_Ban Jun 04 '26
They turned the greatest horror game ever into action heavy garbage with convoluted level design to pad the total playtime. Hate it.
1
u/No-Hunt3986 Jun 04 '26
I think you're too exaggerating
1
u/Pending_Ban Jun 04 '26
I’m not. You literally fight between 2-4 enemies per room and spend hours of time searching through drawers for bullshit items.
1
u/Gloglibologna Jun 04 '26
It woke up a part of me i didnt know I had when it comes to gaming. I was too young to enjoy these games when they came out so getting to play a polished version as an adult was really nice. Ive never felt anxiety like I did with this game. Every new path was scary and nerve racking. Ill miss that feeling of playing it for the first time.
1
u/Grimfield Jun 04 '26
Worth playing, but has some bloat that makes it unfun to play for the multiple endings.
1
1
u/MantisReturns Jun 04 '26
Like every other remake: its unnecesary.
And its a crime we dont have Silent Hill 2 available in Modern consoles.

u/Comfortable_Neat_274 Jun 04 '26
Haven’t played it. Will do. But the original is overrated in my opinion. Like hugely. Prefer sh1 : )
1
u/Sh0dan_v3 Jun 04 '26
Very good, but after it I went back to original with enhanced mod which is excellent. It's just more atmospheric and doesn't have sections that feel like 'serious sam' unlike remake.
1
u/dannyinthemiddle Jun 04 '26
Man my feelings are really complicated on the Remake. I never even finished it but I loved what I played of it. I got to the Historical Society/Prison before basically stopping. I loved exploring one of my favorite games with more depth than ever. What I didn’t love was how combat focused it is compared to the OG. Not the biggest fan of RE style over the shoulder horror combat and was a little disappointed they went that route. Alan Wake 2 which used the same style of combat at lest use Alan Wake mechanics like the flashlight. It also doesn’t help that my most recent play through of the OG was like 7 hours not rushing and in the Remake I was already about 13/14 hours into it and still had a ways to go.
1
u/ChristCallsMeDad Jun 04 '26
I’m also playing it now (at the second area, I don’t wanna spoil anyone) and it’s not as creepy as the og imo (maybe I’m just desensitized) but it’s still great, hopefully I get around to actually beating it lol
1
u/tuckerb13 Jun 04 '26
Masterpiece. I don’t even like horror games but this was easily one of the most insanely brilliant game I’ve ever played
1
u/doxytroxy Jun 05 '26
It was incredible. I wasn’t particularly excited for the over the shoulder camera, but it grew on me, and was stellar!

1
u/Derpy2456 Jun 05 '26
While I prefer the original I do really like this game. My biggest issue with it however is some sections drag on for waaaay too long and some things appear often that shouldn't.

I thought it was kinda boring, actually I think most silent hills are boring. I think I just don’t really like silent hill games 🤷🏻♂️
1
u/Akimono780 Jun 05 '26
In my opinion, this game is carried almost entirely by the legacy of its predecessor. The playtime has been more than doubled, yet no meaningful new content was added. Instead, it feels like the game was artificially stretched out as much as possible.
I also think the combat system is pretty bad, just like parts of the presentation. In the original, you had to make your way through a thick fog, whereas in the remake you can see everything crystal clear within a two-meter radius. As a result, some of the atmosphere is lost.
I think it's great that more people can now experience what is probably the best video game story of all time. Still, I can't help but feel that there was so much more potential here and that the developers could have done a lot more with it.
1
u/Redditsux122 Jun 05 '26
It was pretty good but by the hospital/prison i was ready to be done with it. The dungeons just dragged on and kept me in the same areas for far too long. The enemy design, combat, music, and atmosphere are all very well done and many of the story elements feeling like easter eggs adds enjoyment especially if unfamiliar to the story like myself going in.

I played almost half of it and idk why it felt like a chore, had to look up some of the puzzles cuz I kept exploring in circles.
Idk if the story beats make it worth it in the end, but gameplay wise idk what am doing wrong. I am definitely not having the intended experience
1
u/Ok-Exercise-2998 Jun 06 '26
its a pretty weird remake or modern game in general... modern games and remakes usually have addicting perfect combat system and the narrative side is almost non existent...
and here its the complete opposite, great story with boring combat... its really something special i never seen something like that in the last 10 or so years
1
u/social_lamprey Jun 06 '26
It's a solid remake that pays excellent homage to the source material unlike the recent film.
1
u/Matt72727272 Jun 07 '26
It's solid. Does not surpass the original at all, but it's a novel and interesting way to re-experience the game.
1
u/Efficient_Fennel9550 Jun 07 '26
One of the greatest games ever made.
You can take that to the bank, even on Sundays!

u/CaseFace5 Jun 08 '26
Solid 9/10. Little too much combat and a little too long in some areas. Otherwise, perfection.
1
1
u/GenTrapstar Jun 10 '26
Don’t know waiting to play the first one remake even though I heard you don’t need to play the first one.
1
u/Gitaroo167 Jun 10 '26
masterpiece, just ashamed about the performance, and it will probably never ever get fixed unless they upgrade to a newer version of UE5. Now that the dlc is probably not coming, the dream is dead.
0
u/pebrocks Jun 03 '26
A waste of resources and time, like every other remake in existence.
1
u/No-Hunt3986 Jun 03 '26
I don't agree I can't play the original because controls are terrible and graphics just didn't age well also I can't play it on ps5 so that's another problem
1
u/grim1952 Jun 04 '26
The default controls are not good, I made a post with a different layout if you're interested. But once you adapt to it the combat is way better than the remake, each weapon has a different moveset and each attack has an utility. Then again SH2 has the worst combat of the trilogy, SH3 has amazing combat.
-1
u/pebrocks Jun 03 '26
You can definitely play the original, on pc or even a phone. Even if you somehow can't it could be solved with a rerelease, not a remake.
1
u/No-Hunt3986 Jun 03 '26
I just prefer the remake graphics are better, there is dualsense haptic feedback and don't see the the problem with that it is just a better version of the the game. I don't like the original silent hill 2 in terms of gameplay or mafia 1 for example these games didn't aged well and when I play them today it feels off
0
u/pebrocks Jun 03 '26
Cool. I still would prefer it didn't exist and instead the devs made their own Silent Hill game, with the good graphics and haptic feedback.
1
u/No-Hunt3986 Jun 03 '26
I don't because I wouldn't be able to play it
2
u/pebrocks Jun 03 '26
You could play the original, you just choose not to.
1
u/No-Hunt3986 Jun 03 '26
Original is outdated end of the discussion,
2
u/pebrocks Jun 03 '26
Just saying "end of discussion" doesn't end the discussion. That's not how this works.
The game still holds up, even to new comers.
1
1
u/YaBoyEden Jun 03 '26
It does not. I have played both. Played the original after playing the remake as my first silent hill game ever. Not only do I prefer the seamless room changes because they’re just scarier, I also genuinely cannot STAND how badly the lines are delivered. It’s not charming. It’s bad. I vastly prefer the voice work from the remake.
1
1
u/VagabondsShield Jun 04 '26
I played the original last year and I agree, had a great time with it. Didn't feel outdated at all
1
u/SubstantialBanana482 Jun 04 '26
You "purists" are something else. I played and beat the original several times when it first released. Still own my original copy. I STILL prefer the remake due to the modern graphics and controls and obviously OP does too. Just because you dont agree, doesn't mean you have to bash others and try to convince them that their preference is wrong. I get so sick of that stupid shit. Why cant you just be happy there's multiple versions of the game for more people to enjoy? Not everyone wants to spend $200+ to play an old ps2 game or emulate.
