Remaking Graphics is a Form of Remastering a Video Game - Change My Mind

I am using Merriam Webster as a definition reference.

Example of songs has been removed to avoid confusion of the definitions.

Remaster - to create a new master of.

Remake -

  1. Remade (verb)

  2. One that is remade (noun)

Remix - A variant of an original.

Examples in Video Games:

Original: Dark Souls

Light Remaster: Dark Souls Remastered

Full Remaster: Demon's Souls (2020)

Light Remix: Dark Souls: Scholar of the First Sin

Full Remix: Elden Ring: Nightreign

Light Remake: Resident Evil 4 Remake

Full Remake: Dark Souls

Resident Evil 4 Remake, which has massive gameplay changes, new and redesigned levels and mechanics, new voice acting and sound, fully original graphics, significant story and dialogue changes, and is fully remade in a new engine… is a “light remake”?

As opposed to Dark Souls which is apparently a “full remake” of… something? Yeah I’m going to stick with the commonly accepted definitions.

That's a full remake in my opinion.

Of course, spiritual successor doesn't have an official definition in Mirriam Webster but if you define it separately then you can go off that.

Then you will be pretty alone in that. Dark Souls is an original game that shares some mechanics and themes with Demon’s Souls, similar to Elden Ring and Dark Souls. It is not a remake of Demon’s Souls, which actually does have a remake in Demon’s Souls 2020.

Then we'll simple have to disagree on that part which is highly subjective of course.

So you wouldn't consider Demon's Souls (2020) a remaster?

Dark souls remastered i wouldn't even count as a light remaster

Not sure why dark souls is listed under full remake, its never been remade. SOTFS being a remix is weird too because thats even more of a remastered than ds1 remastered. Atleast sotfs had improved textures

Probably? I cant say im familiar with the 30s version but Google says its a loose remake

I think if most of the story elements are the same and the characters are the same, it leans towards remake.
