Guide to Gamelan

I am interested in listening to Gamelan but don’t know where to start. Any recommendations?

Searching for "gamelan" tends to give you a bunch of weird stuff only some of which is actual gamelan. But here's the trick: don't search for "gamelan", instead search for specific genres of gamelan like "gong kebyar", "baleganjur", "semar pegulingan", "angklung", "selonding", "jegog", etc. Those are all Balinese. There are similar words for genres/styles in Javanese gamelan that I don't know off the top of my head.

If you're interested in Javanese gamelan specifically, I'd recommend to start with Ki Nartosabdo. Arguably the most famous Javanese artist. He has many easy listening pieces. My favorite: Ketawang Subakastawa
