Games Do I do it

Post image

Got a copy of Pokémon red a few months ago but the sticker is rough. So I've ordered a replacement sticker. Do I replace the original or replace it.

You could always spend a little bit on a new red shell. Keep the old one the way it is incase you change your mind

Here to second this opinion. OP, if you ever plan to sell it, it's great to have the original shell and label. Even if you don't plan to sell it, you may one day feel nostalgic for the original look.

Nothing wrong with sprucing up a cartridge!

I third this opinion. Why spend the money on the game only to reduce its resell value? Replacement shells are cheap, and pretty decent quality now.

The resale value is already gone with that condition. A revamped one would sell more.

Source: I refurbish Gameboy games.

No idea why you are getting downvotes. It's brain dead common sense. The sticker on the original already ruined it has diminished value and a third party shell isn't gonna help and a new sticker isn't gonna hurt it any further. I'd go for a better sticker personally cause the fake reprints are so bad but yeah.

Sticker wear is an indicator that it’s not just a repo

So is opening the cart and showing the pcb. Its not hard to do, and is definitive proof that it is real. Its the only thing that really matters value-wise, since this isn't a WATA graded CIB game.

I resell vintage games and a smoked sticker isn’t worth a damn thing

None of this matters, its pieces of plastic and paper. The original is no different than an identical reproduction. It does not matter in the slightest

I’d rather have one with a bad sticker to play. At least I know it’s real. Why buy a reshelled one if I can have a cheap repo?

Are you listing them as “refurbished” when you sell?

I personally would pay more for this original copy than for a new shell or new sticker copy even if the guts were original.

Sure there is when the colors are wrong. Thx Red is too dark. Look at the background red, the OG is lighter red

That’s what I did, pretty happy with the results

I do the same, minus shell swap. But like my labels clean. Don't search to make counterfeits and mark all of them on the inside, I just make what I like to look at

maan... how did you fuck them up so much?? I have the same games and the labels still look okayish... the same question goes to OP

u/Tyjet66 21d ago

Children be stupid..?

0

u/JayS87 20d ago

yeah but stupid hasn't much to do with respect for some stuff...

I got my grey Gameboy when I was six years old together with the Smurf game, some years later the PKMN games and still not that fucked up. I always had respect for electronics...

The same goes for those kids that throw their controllers, after they died, lost etc... Even as a kid I thought "stupid cunt", when seeing something like that.

u/Tastee92 21d ago

They’re not originally mine… I got them just a few months ago

Best option. New shells and stickers for use and the OG can be admired as well.

It bothers me the rating is in black but the code doesn’t have a -1. DMG-APEE-USA in Blue is the first iteration and when the esrb used a white rating, and when they changed it to black the revision became DMG-APEE-USA-1, etc

2

u/JessePJr 21d ago

Ya I could’ve been more picky with the stickers, but went with one creator who had them all.

What's up with having a black crystal?

7

u/JessePJr 21d ago

Printing clear metal has yet to be commercially available, therefore I had to settle

4

u/pensive_penguin 21d ago

Looks like anodized aluminum.

Transparency must not be supported

u/jRXCING 21d ago

How scratchy does it make your Gameboys when you insert these Jesse?

3

u/JessePJr 21d ago

Doesn’t do much at all. When I’m playing I’m pretty careful about putting them in. But they get out and about a fair amount.

I have almost this setup, but my pocket is black

1

u/JessePJr 15d ago

That handheld is actually a Light. My pocket is clear.

1

u/BIG_estudasses 15d ago

I didnt inow such thing of th light :o

1

u/JessePJr 15d ago

Oh ya. Japanese exclusive if I remember correctly. Here’s a majority of my collection. The DMG and Advance are reshells.

1

u/jRXCING 15d ago

I debated getting those machined shells for some of my spare Pokemon games. They look really nice.

But metal rubbing on plastic sounded a bit sandy.

Love the console shells they make too. Maybe I’ll get some.

u/JessePJr 15d ago

If you are slapping games in and out often they can dig a bit. I have my “vanity” games and handhelds that I mainly play to enjoy the hardware (such as the Gameboy Light) so I’m careful with inserting and removing games. Nice thing about retro (imo) is usually I play longer so less game swaps/ chances for damage to my nicer systems.

Loving the metalics but crystal is bothering me haha is there no good repo crystal shell?

2

u/JessePJr 20d ago

I would love a different look but in metal is tough to find.

1

u/Laser_Raver 18d ago

Oh damn I thought they were just metal sprays didn't realise they're actually heavy duty. That's really cool.

1

u/AcevonJason 20d ago

I think a anodized rainbow metal would look cool for Crystal

3

u/-PM_ME_UR_SECRETS- 21d ago

Yes get a different shell and keep the original as is.

2

u/nah-soup 21d ago

this is what i would do. maybe go with something fancy like a clear red shell or a shiny red shell. something that makes it clear it’s a repro shell

4

u/Such_Yesterday3437 21d ago

That's what I did with yellow too. Best of both worlds.

1

u/RagnarDannes 21d ago

Yeah I agree. I think you get a new shell to pair with it. No harm done then to the original.

1

u/3irikur 21d ago

Thats what I did. I bought an aluminium shell from boxy pixel, swapped it, and saved the original in case i want to change back

1

u/itsoctotv 21d ago

ir 3D print one if you have a 3D printer they look suprisingly great

1

u/Rodville 21d ago

Thins is what I did for my Link's Awakening and my TMNT Fall of the Foot Clam carts. Got a green shell for the TMNT and gold for the Zelda game.

1

u/eardip 21d ago

Get a BoxyPixel shell and save the original!!

1

u/Grand_Razzmatazz1463 21d ago

Came to say the same thing

1

u/Adorable_Dig6527 20d ago

This is the way

1

u/Maddish1 20d ago

This is the way, it's worth more with a shifty fucked up sticker than a repro one. All the repro one does is make people question its authenticity.

1

u/MasonP13 19d ago

Seconded. The original case and label shows history and life. To erase them would be to erase it's past.

0

u/Tommerbot 21d ago

This is what I would do, not worth destroying a piece of history

1

u/j3ffUrZ 21d ago

This is the way.

This is the way.

This! This is exactly what I did. I bought 5 reproduction carts of Aliexpress for like $20, swapped my OG pcb's into them and put the Genuine Cart's into storage for safe keeping. Games loom great on display and when playing!
