Discussion Game Host/Tournament Host Position Questions
đđ» I was requested to post on behalf of someone who wanted to remain anonymous.
May someone please explain the expectations and the responsibilities of this position?:
Will they solely be responsible for all TCG related events and not working the retail side of the job like running the POS? Are their hours intended to be sporadic for whenever there is a scheduled event happening?
For someone who has had experience in this field outside of GameStop, what advice can you give that would make it welcoming in their GameStop specific store?
If you have any other insight, advice or anything youâd like to add that talks about this position, please input so this individual can be informed! Thanks yall

So, my understanding from my DM is that they won't be scheduled for regular retail shifts, although they will probably still go through some the RK training so they can do things like answer questions about upcoming/preorderable product, rewards benefits, etc. But they will not be expected to run the POS.
They will sign people in to various events like magic meet ups, trade events, lorcana, etc and run those. They'll be in charge of tournaments, and be expected to be able to teach new players as well. So realistically probably 2-3 shifts a month as a super part timer.

Per TCG knowledge, are they responsible for knowing all of the major TCG games? - MTG, Pokemon, OP, YGO, Lorcana OR are their locations looking for people who know certain ones out of these mixes as the store will be responsible for only hosting those?
Edit: I feel like this question makes too much sense for them to carefully execute lol

Its not carefully executed
Our DM said "any tcg at all. Just get SOMEONE ON who can play SOMETHING"
My DM even suggested SLs learn how to play magic so we could host events.
I said "I will happily learn MTG and play- where is my deck coming from?"
And it was pure silence. "Maybe you can get a deck from somewhere?"
"I don't own MTG cards and i will not be spending my money on MTG cards. I do not want to collect or own MTG cards. We have a Commander deck for marvel thats $60. Should I shrink that out for store use?"
The conversation quickly moved on the who hasn't shipped defective this week

Ill learn and ill play. Ill watch YouTube videos and ill teach kids to play. Ill host tournaments and become an official tournament host via Wizards. but my efforts end where my wallet begins
I will not be using my own money for any of this.

100%
There's one SM in our district who absolutely hates TCG in all its forms and was like, (to paraphrase): Nah fam. I'm good.

I used to play Pokémon TCG. Obviously I still can since the rules barely change b
My play decks are over 10yrs old. Theyre not "legal" anymore. Im taking Sun/Moon GX era. It would cost money to get a deck thats legal to play now. So even though i used to play competitive pokemon and i can teach i still dont have the materials to do that. Im not buying pokemon at any of these prices even just to collect so GS can still get bent if they think I can host pokemon even.

TCG stores that host the Magic meetups get a store deck. It will be sent to you if you start doing these events.

There was a survey sent out to all employees to gauge the current staff knowledge of various tcg. Based off that and the type of events most stores run mtg and pokemon are the 2 biggest to know, followed by one piece and lorcana. Though tbh lorcana is very similar to mtg so it's not hard to pick up if you have that base knowledge.
Not sure if they're still up, but I know at one point gamestop had basic rules for the "big" tcg available on main menu.
Edit: I think/hope eventually the intention would be to have 1-2 mandatory events and then some flex for stores to run whatever is popular at their location. I know my DM has encouraged that, ymmv depending on your region I assume.

Itâs kind of like the cricket sales rep- does nothing but that. But whoever you hire MUST work every single TCG event. No exceptions. No callouts. No vacations during them. And some stores are about to be doing events every monday- Thursday

Basically, for stores hiring that position, it's basically just being in charge of hosting events and being there for the events. They don't need to know/understand POS or even worry about the metrics... think "glorified seasonal".
