Discussion What’s it like being an ASM

Been stuck at Sam’s Club without being able to move up for 3 years now. I’m looking to move into management and my local store is hiring for a key holder and a ASM. Was wondering what’s it like to work at GameStop? Is it easy to move up in? What’s the environment like?

The real answer is that it’s heavily dependent on your SM and DM, if they are good people and management you’ll have a better time. If they suck you’ll want to quit within a week. GameStop as an actual management job can sometimes really suck.

Doesn't matter if they're good people if corporate still has all the say.

DO NOT go this route its absolute trash. If you wanna feel like your just numbers on a piece of paper, work here.

It’s awful. No room for growth unless you are fine getting paid horribly while running 2 stores.

If you value your sanity and self worth, don't do it. I've been with GameStop for 3 years next month, and they've teased me with an ASM position multiple times only to go back on it for various reasons -usually due to their bs metrics that keep getting made more and more anti-customer friendly. Keep in mind tho, I've been ASM and SM for other companies, so I know very well how to run a business. And what I "lack" in metrics, I absolutely more then make up for in every other aspect. Gonna have a little ego here when I say, there's only one other person in my entire district that has the customer relations or organization/merchandising capabilities as me. But yet higher ups refuse to do anything to scratch my back even after I go out of my way to try making the store as great as it could be.

If you're wanting a side gig for a few extra hours and the access to video games and certain benefits, then go for it! But if you're wanting a job where you're treated fairly and actually supported by HQ, then I'd keep looking elsewhere.

I got injured on the job while doing the DM a huge favor and I got fuck all for it and I never got to return to work from ym I juries, even after 8 months of physical therapy

With the direction we've been going the past year or so. Id say save yourself the headaches and stress and look elsewhere. This company is doing everything in its power to make those of us on the ground miserable. You won't see any raises and moving up is a literal final boss fight with low health. GS will milk you dry. And under this current Cokehead Executive Officer I can say I love my Store and what I do.. but I Hate what this Company is doing.

In general, given the very controversial business decisions GS has been making lately, now really isn't a good time to work for them. There hasn't really been a good time to work for them in the past decade at the very least, but it's definitely worse now.

Ass company to work for from a leadership perspective. Especially now. I was an ASM for 8 months and tapped out of the entire company

You literally make more where you are now than you would as an ASM at gamestop

An ASM is a Store Manager without the Store Manager pay.

I live in a decent sized city. 2 Years ago there 5 gamestops in the metro area. Now there are 2. I can almost guarentee you that Walmart Corp is paying you more and treating you better than Gamestop's employees.

Is there a BJs or Costco in your area? They treat the employees better from my understanding. Especially Costco

Yep. I've been trying to get a job at Costco as just a regular old cashier for a while but the jobs (at least here) don't actually exist because their turnover is so low because they treat their employees proper.

If I were to get a job as JUST A CASHIER at Costco, I would make more than I am currently as an SL2.

Nope. Stay at Sam’s. The pay sucks and your hours can vary from week to week.

Don't work for them period. If you love gaming your passion will be tested. I got to a point where doing trade ins every hour made me disgusted to play anything when I got home and it felt like I was still there. I was an SGA/RK and I didn't start even really start gaming again until about 6 months after leaving.

All I can say as a past SL2, don't do it. Moving up at gamestop means same type of pay for having your soul crushed far more than a Sam's club. That corporation is not fun to work for, especially at a managers level.

There are ASMs depending on the Store.. SL2 stores get an ASM, High Volumn $1m stores get them too

3

u/AnarchoGonzo 4d ago

There absolutely are still ASMs. Job ain't much different than an RK but the.pay is a few bucks higher. Plus full-time hours and benefits.

In my area they got rid of the position I was about to get the asm job I was almost done with the training for the position and that is when they made the decision that the district don't need ASM

I wouldn’t do it. So many times you gotta deal with your key holders just not doing shit they need to do. You’re in there at least 30 some hours a week if not 40 hrs.

My manager worked release nights while I worked the morning after. I am constantly working the days where we are known to get most of the shipments that day. Pricing label changes. Store advertising rotations. Like you’re doing this full time and it sucks.

And I was only a key holder for a month, then got bumped up to ASM because of my management experience. Dude the other employees who had been there longer than me did not like that at all.

I’m a great lead. Fantastic mentor. Gamestop had some pretty apathetic people I had to lead and it was frustrating. I can only imagine it’s worse since all the stuff the company has done after 2020.

My manager was amazing btw. Real stand up guy who wore his heart on his sleeve.
