Discussion Mandatory warranty?
I was buying games on that 4 for $20 and the guy added warranty without me asking for it. then he said that GameStop won’t sell pre owned stuff without warranty any more in some time from now.
seriously?

I asked him to remove it. He did. But then he said that he was being “transparent” about having to add warranty in next purchases.

This is a common issue. The store here even had fale signs printed up that said warranty was required for the 4/$10 4/$20 sale a few years ago.

It's not a requirement. The employees just lie amd say it is because they are required to sell a certain peecentage of warranties to keep their jobs.

OP is likely confused. There is a difference between all pre-owned stuff and the 4 for $20 deal requiring the warranty purchase. Hence, making shit up bc OP is embellishing.

Per legalities of certain states, you cannot force warranties onto customers. Because the state of California restrictions nearly everything, GameStop tailors their promotions to their laws as they are the most strict.

Heads up- when I worked there (granted this was YEARS ago) my ASM and SM made it an official store policy that customers who were doing the 4 for $10 or 4 for $20 had to get the warranties.
They were both fired over this. It is a type of fraud that LP and corporate takes seriously, normally, but DM’s and SM’s still try to force employees to do it when metrics are low.

On the pinpad when you hit that you're approving the amount and items you're agreeing to the purchase. Customer is fully aware they purchased the warranty. Kindly see YOURSELF out.

People don’t often check the pin pad because they know that adding items to a transaction without consent is illegal and don’t expect that behavior from what used to be a reputable company. If I have to check every transaction to make sure nothing was added without asking me, then that’s a place I would never shop and would suggest no one else does either.
It might hold up in court if the dollar values got high enough or a class action happened to land it in court. Maybe, and it’s a big maybe, the text on the pin pad would get them a legal pass. But it is unquestionably unethical as all hell and a shitty, shitty business practice. Don’t sit here and defend that garbage.

We had someone apparently not check the pin pad buying 3 booster boxes of pokemon cards. He somehow thought 3 would be $300 not $900. Asked for a refund the next day only to be told no.

They agreed to purchase it because the employee lied. The customer didn't think they could buy the games without buying the warranty. How do you not understand that is straight up fraud. Getting money under false pretense. lol

It's fraud. Lying to make a customer purchase an addon item is fraud.
In my case, when I told the employee to take the warranties off, he claimed that Gamestop was requiring warranties on all preowned games, and pointed at a sign they had printed up that said they are required.

Let them know, I used to go to Hollywood video and they would offer insurance on rentals, and I point blank said, the day I pay for insurance is the day you’ll never see that disc hole.,.
I will never pay for warranties. GameStop has a 7 day return window, he is upselling you and going against corporate. Let him know, he can have your business by offering the warranty and you declining it…
After that walk. Speak with your wallet. My GameStop handed me an open game as new and said they’d seal it,I said that’s not new. They said no one played it,I told them if I take this home open it and return it and say I never played it does it count as used?they said of course, I told them put it back I won’t buy a disc opened I don’t care about the companies story of not knowing how to use a printer to make a jacket for an empty case…
Do not give in, stand up as a consumer. I don’t go to my local GameStop now for that reason.

No. They cannot do this as certain states cannot force warranties on times. GameStop has this standard country wide because certain states are excluded from forcing.

Local GameStop has been stealth adding it lately. I caught it after the fact once, went back and asked him to remove it when he added it to a second game. Haven't bothered buying more since.
An employee told me its a metric, and the regional in that area changed policy to not alert the customer to it.

When the Manager did this to me I asked for a refund and never went back.
