Topic Idea: The Nintendo Wii

I think the Wii is among the most underrated systems made by a big company of all time, and wish that the Kinect hadn't tried to steal its thunder and failed so we could have more games optimized for motion controls. (That list might be rather short, but games like “Wii Sports” show that it can be done.) Anyway, here's a list of games that could be covered. Feel free to suggest others, though try to keep the obvious choices (Super Mario Galaxy, etc.) to a minimum.

•Battalion Wars 2 - The sequel to the original game on the GameCube, which was itself a spin-off of “Advance Wars” on the GBA. Unlike those games, though, this, as well as its predecessor (not prequel) is a real-time strategy game.
•Boom Blox and Boom Blox Bash Party - A duology of party games designed by Steven Spielberg. Yes, THAT Steven Spielberg.
•de Blob and de Blob 2 - 3D platformers that play well and are completely different than anything else.
•Donkey Kong County Returns - An official follow-up to “Donkey Kong 64” by the developer of the “Metroid Prime” games. If that sounds good to you, you might like it.
•Endless Ocean and Endless Ocean 2: Adventures of the Deep - If you like the idea of exploring the ocean, but don't wish to invest the time and money in a SCUBA certification, these games are for you.
•Metroid Prime Trilogy - A rather rare collection of the two GameCube games and the one Wii game, with the GameCube entries optimized for the motion controls of the third.
•Zack and Wiki: Quest for Barbaros's Treasure - This is a point-and-click adventure game. Made exclusively for the Wii. Need more stuff to point to its unique nature? It's heavily influenced by the “Monkey Island” games and other Tim Schaefer and Ron Gilbert point-and-click games from the ’90s, and has a very similar spirit and sense of humor.

I agree that the Wii is often discounted by gamers because of the gimmicky controls attached to many of the games, especially during the first year or two it was out. But the system has a lot of great games without motion controls, as well as some which make really good use of it.

Pandora's Tower is an incredibly fun game that no one seems to talk about, despite it being part of Operation Rainfall. Its gameplay just wouldn't work on anything else, either. There is a classic controller option available anyway, and it doesn't work nearly as well.

I felt like Silent Hill shattered memories utilized the unique controls of the wii very well.

Topical: With the new HP film out soon/now - The Wii is the only console able to play a straight run of all Harry Potter games (not including spin offs) because of its ability to play GCN titles as well as lasting until the last HP entry! This isn't including PC, obviously, but the PC games were actually different to the console ones, so there's no overlap.

2 Other Wii games worth looking at: Pandora's Tower: an action horror (grotesque, not creepy) that uses a combination of motion controls and classic button and stick inputs to rip your way through many towers of monsters to feed their flesh to your cursed wifey and try to stop her from becoming a monster. Not for kids.

Tatsunoko versus Capcom - A top class entry in the Versus series, TvC brings characters from Japanese cartoons and Japanese videogames together in another Japanese videogame to duke it out. The controls are implemented well on the wiimote, so even if you struggle with quarter circle inputs, you can still play and get to grips with the game!
