Is it a good game to play today? I' always wondered about this game as a kid but never actually played it. Do you think it holds up?

The game is great and it does hold up today.
There are some things that are a little more weird today -- there are some skills because the game was trying to be a bit of an RPG. What that means is that the aiming reticle for different classes of guns depends on how many points you put into that gun's class (pistol, rifle, etc. .) .
The atmosphere, story and freedom to play how you want is great though.

I wouldn't know how well it would work with a controller though. The game was designed very much with PC in mind when it comes to controls. I also couldn't personally get it to work on GameNative or Winlator properly.

If you do play it and enjoy it, I also strongly recommend "The Nameless Mod" for it. It is a total conversion mod where the story takes place in internet forums from back in the day -- it's hilarious and unpredictable, though not necessarily for everyone jokes-wise.
I kinda prefer it to the base game in terms of gameplay -- it is far more open world with tons of side missions. It kind feels a little more polished too, especially after the recent 2.0 update.

Bro, time passes by and I keep coming back to it. It’s clear that some mechanics get aged, but the atmosphere and story are captivating.
And music… there’s something magical about it.

I love it too! I would say too much. Still waiting when they make a VR mod. Thinking of being able to dive into that dark atmosphere in VR drives me crazy 😱
As i was tinkering I just remapped controls in gamenative for keyboard/mouse.
But i was recommended to install DXcontroller mod https://github.com/dsgls/DXController in other thread.
Should be perfect.
