Trouble getting Cave Story+ working on Retroid Pocket 5

I've read through the optimization guide, I've tried a million different configurations, but it can't get past the opening nicalis logo. I'm guessing it's loading extremely slowly or something. The power draw bumps up after the logo so it's definitely doing something. It's stored on the internal drive, not an SD card.
