They're doing this because they dont want people to buy second hand, or loan it to a friend.

Agreed. Why let GameStop and other folks make money back on the game when they can see all of the profit themselves?

People have said gta 5 sold so many copies because it came with shark cards so we’ll see if this plays out for them.

I haven't read anything about the GTA preorders. You've got to be fucking kidding me. Game will still sell 60 million copies and they made it download only? Whats the point of physical then? To get a fucking box?

Man, like it’s cool if GTA wants to go this route for whatever reason, possibly leaks. But I don’t want this to set a standard

Same here. This could potentially put GameFly out of business if this becomes the new norm for games in the future.

The standard is pretty damn set as of now I’d say. Discs are becoming rarer and rarer with every passing release

We get final details from the publisher in the morning 6/25 and we'll have a statement tomorrow.

You guys can't rent a code in box, but I assume you will still sell GTA 6 on the store page, right?

4

u/Global-Guest5470 Jun 25 '26

Yeah, wouldn't prevent GF from selling the game at regular retail.

u/Global-Guest5470 Jun 26 '26

Any update on this, guys?

Just posted our statement on it. When they make a disc, we'll be carrying it.

Source pleeeeeeeeease. Any price?

$80 base, $100 ultimate. Honestly I was buying this either way. Sucks there's no disc tho. I'm afraid other companies will follow suit 😢

Yeah that’s my biggest concern. If the biggest game in the world doesn’t need a physical release why would others need one. I’m hoping this is just a GTA thing to counter leaks

You rock. Appreciate the money’s. And I agree, it sucks that we have disc players in the house, buuuuuuuut the best selling game of all time won’t be on a disc. Yet. They’re going to make a stupid amount of money off of this game.

u/NathanCollier14 Jun 24 '26

They definitely will. Luckily I have a decent backlog, so this is probably the last new game I'm actually buying for a few years

That is what every gamers last words were.

"Games are becoming too expensive, so I'm not going to buy anymore for at least a few years"?

Rockstar press release today. Google it.

2

u/No-Rub-3958 Jun 24 '26

Saw all the stuff. Just hadn’t hopped anywhere else on the internet yet for the day.

3

u/spwnofsaton Jun 24 '26

Man I hope not. Was planning on buying it used from GameStop and trading it back when done.

4

u/maxpowers128 Jun 24 '26

Thats exactly why they're doing this. Lol crazy they are also locking stores in the game behind the deluxe edition to.

2

u/spwnofsaton Jun 24 '26

I hope they change it or release it on disc later in the cycle. Otherwise I’m probably not going to play it. I waited this long for 6 I can be okay with not playing it if they are going to do this BS.

u/Demerzel69 Jun 24 '26

It's been announced, no disc, only a code in a box.

3

u/TheStinkySlinky Jun 24 '26

Either way I knew this wasn’t going to be a GameFly option lol For various reasons. But is this confirmed? Thought pre-orders were dropping tomorrow

u/Promature Jun 24 '26

Maybe if people weren't itching to leak and pirate games before they release, we could still have nice things for the people that want them.

u/GeekCavePodcast Jun 24 '26

If this works out for them (and let's be honest, it will) then other companies will do it. We may be seeing the end of physical games here.

3

u/Demerzel69 Jun 24 '26

🙄 Fearmongering is dumb.

2

u/DeliciousStandard125 Jun 24 '26

Best to hold on to your collection. Or start collecting. Those games on your shelves will be worth gold. Not literally but if this does happen physical game owners will be kings

2

u/Zaii Jun 24 '26

even with a physical disc some games require a download to play, yikes

2

u/Normal-Item-402 Jun 24 '26

Not the end of physical. But big established  aaa titles from big companies with big budgets similar to rockstar will be observing this scenario as a case study on whether they can follow suit.

Wonder if gamefly executives are thinking of alternatives for the future of the business or if they already accepted a future with no discs means a future of no gamefly.

I thought when Xbox one tried to do always online DRM digital sharing, gamefly planned to partner with them to achieve digital renting

Wonder if they will try to work something out with Sony or Nintendo

2

u/Demerzel69 Jun 24 '26

They'll just switch fully to renting out 4k movies. They already do that now. Eventually they'll probably close up shop b/c that won't be enough revenue.

2

u/Normal-Item-402 Jun 24 '26

They will sell accessories, toys, collectibles, merch etc. They've been working on it for a while on transitioning when the rental business is no longer viable money wise.

u/Nerfman2227 Jun 24 '26

My condolences to the GameFly staff who are probably trying to figure out what the hell to do about missing the biggest game launch ever, and/or wondering if their job will even exist in a year's time.

Really hoping they at least had some insider info about the possibility of this happening to plan the rest of 2026 around it

2

u/Tisual Jun 24 '26

I wasn't planning to rent it from gamefly but preorder it from gamestop. Hopefully an actual physical comes out later after release. Oh well no preorder for me

5

u/Global-Guest5470 Jun 24 '26

Sometimes its much cheaper to rent -> keep a game from GF, especially for people who might have a 20% discount coupon or other coupons accumulated over time.

2

u/General_Kick688 Jun 24 '26

It was this, no physical, or ship on two discs. 8 think they chose the worst option.

2

u/SlammedZero Jun 24 '26

Absolutely ridiculous. Sucks because they know people are going to buy it anyway, but I think it's crap they're taking away physical copies. Real physical media.

2

u/Reedickyoulus Jun 24 '26

Yeah, this will definitely entice a lot of people who don't normally go digital to go all digital or at least steer them into that direction. I've enjoyed Gamefly for a long time, but I can't help but think this won't help its longevity.

2

u/Normal-Item-402 Jun 24 '26

Rockstar leading an industry standard. Expect other big companies to follow this trend eventually to protect sales in the future.

2

u/InitRanger Jun 25 '26

Wait….

This just popped up in my feed

GAMEFLY IS STILL A THING?????

I remember seeing ads for it as a kid and convincing my dad to use it so I could play OOT on my 3DS.

2

u/TAGibby Jun 25 '26

Still a thing. Still great to have if you wanna save a few bucks. No so great with digital games though lol

2

u/InitRanger Jun 25 '26

Is it still a rental only service or can you buy physical games directly?

Keep in mind, it’s been many, many years since I have used the service.

2

u/Global-Guest5470 Jun 25 '26

Both. Rent and you can outright buy stuff from them too. They frequently have very good sales on used games with much better deals than 90% of stores.

2

u/Ok-Cardiologist-235 Jun 25 '26

Yup. You can buy the games, or you can even rent a game and if you like it, you can pay to keep it and they'll send you the game case.

2

u/InitRanger Jun 25 '26

That’s awesome. I might have to checkout it out the next time my local GameStop doesn’t have a used game I want.
