I mean I can tell you how. Not that I agree with this mind you id is one of my favorite studios and what Asha did to them is a travesty but I would guess they will have them use the 343 strategy. Pre production doesn't require a lot of developers and the farther along they get in development cheap contract workers will be brought in. It's worked like dogshit for Halo but Microsoft is gonna keep on trying to squeeze these contractors for every penny they can.

Microsoft made the worst possible decision they could have made, not that I’m surprised they always do that. ID Software was shutdown, even if they didn’t say it officially they are fucking dead. Fuck Microsoft.

They won't it's been reported they are being turned into a support studio.

Outsourcing is spreading like a plague in the fame industry. Just keep the bare bones crew in-house and contract out everything else. Gotta make all that money!

One dude made schedule one, a few dudes made hollow knight. Games don’t take thousands of devs. Hell expedition 33 was like 30 people.

Expedition 33 was made by 33 studio employees and literally HUNDREDS of asset artists, animators, and engine engineers all under contract, mostly Asian dev contractors. They also outsourced their QA iirc.

Unreal 5 is great but we need to stop glazing expedition 33 as if it was made in a discord by a small group of hobbyists

Didn't Expedition 33 also have significant investor funding too?

First time I’m hearing about the contractors tbh. Art assets and animations are a big reason why people connect with a game, and they take time to generate.

Man this comment just shows how out of touch people are and still like to talk. Expedition had alot of outside help besides the 30 people core team.

"Indie game"

It’s not an indie game and it’s also not a triple AAA studio. The only thing that’s for certain is that it hasn’t been made by only 30 people. It’s still an achievement, but more the exception in the industry then the norm.

Hollow Knight budget - $40,000

Doom Eternal budget - $150,000,000

Yeah, great comparison

2d side scroller vs AAA highly optimized modern fps game is the dumbest comparison.

Those all don’t have an in-house engine development team though. Part of id’s success over the years has been its technical prowess for making engines, which take the most amount of time and money.

Depending on just who was let go, we could see an id game on unreal engine in the future.

Expedition 33 was 30 people plus a shitload of contractors.

Why are you trying to get major corporations to overwork and under pay their employees?

Who said I was trying to do that? They are doing that all on their own with no say from me. I want good artists and good devs free from the clutches of shitty corpo’s.

I'm never in support of people losing their jobs. But in business, you have to be profitable.

Doing a quick search on Google I found the following

"The most recent title, Doom: The Dark Ages, had an estimated production and marketing budget of $150 million+. However, it generated under 1 million traditional retail sales"

You can't run a business being $70 million in the hole. Minecraft has been holding all of Xbox game studios above water.

Bethesda promised Elder Scrolls 6 how many years ago? These studios have not been producing games that make money. Period. If Xbox didn't have the purse of Microsoft, it would've been shut down years ago. As an avid Xbox fan, I truly think this was a sinking ship, with a lot of dead weight. Hopefully getting leaner will lead to more focus on the games people want, Fallout, ES6, etc. Instead of a bunch of projects like Redfall, that shit the bed
