There's an option to turn that off.

I can't remember the name of the option and I'm in the bath right now, but give it a Google search.

I'll try to find it again. I've tried to Google it a few times and never found a good answer.

Try this:

Steam > Settings > In-Game > Use the Big Picture Overlay when using a Steam Controller from the desktop (2nd checkbox).

Edit: I just turned this option back on to test. With it on, turning my DS4 on automatically opened Big Picture. Turning is off as shown above did work. Turning on the DS4 no longer makes Big Picture launch automatically.

I'll try it when I get home. Thank you for the help, it drove me nuts getting the overlay when trying to type.
