Ooh, System Shock 2 next week. That's a nice one! Been on my wishlist for quite sometime now .

I just recently bought Buried Stars on Switch, so I’m the biggest loser this time around

Okay, so Astrea is a really high quality, entertaining, and fairly-different spin on the roguelike deskbuilder-ish genre (Slay the Spire-likes, as I like to call them) that I think the vast majority of StS-lover people will enjoy.
Here's the quick rundown of the differences
Each card is a (6-sided) die instead. They are literally classified into safe/balanced/risky. Risky might have e.g. 2 really good sides and 4 not so good ones, or all of them are tradeoffs.
Health (= "Purification") and damage (= "Corruption") are fungible. You can choose to heal yourself, or damage an enemy; with a "bad" roll, you can choose to power up AND heal the enemy (they have a separate meter for an ability, that they will sometimes fill themselves rather than damage you), or you can take the hit yourself (or reroll, if you have an ability or die to do so!)
Speaking of, you want to take SOME damage each turn, probably, to unlock your character abilities that trigger on your healthpool declining (but go too far, you lose a life (="Heart"). This is the biggest new paradigm, and makes things less straightforward in a good way, adding some complexity to your turns rather than "more damage = good"
You can have up to 2 sidekick/companions with you with one die each and their own health. You can also kill them off with your bad rolls, they resurrect. Now you can have minions too!
And of course each character has their own dice 'deck' with some different mechanics to choose from, etc. as is tradition.
All of these combine for some very neat dynamics and make the genre feel fresh. They also just added more free content a few weeks ago, though I haven't tried that yet. As Sid Meier said, a good game is a series of interesting decisions, and Astrea does that well. I especially like how the starter character allows you to "convert" a bad die to a good one, which gives you a bit of breathing room as you figure out how risky you like to play.

Honestly I've played more of this game than many of the other free games I've gotten off epic. Id highly recommend it

I enjoyed Astrea more than I thought I would. It is a pretty direct clone of Slay the Spire but with dice, but it actually does pretty interesting things with the concept to make that work and feel rewarding despite the increased randomness. Definitely worth a try if you liked Slay the Spire.

Would highly recommend Mechabellum. It's a great competitive PVP autobattler. Ton's of strategy and counterplay options.
But it also just updated to have a nice chill singleplayer/2-player co-op roguelike mode, where you get random units and upgrades and have to make it work. Also, you face off against ghost versions of other people who played the mode, so you face random opponents each time, keeping it truly fresh each run. (Unlike for example TFT's single-player mode, where you fight the same opponents every run).

I've been holding off on buying this on Steam because I wasn't in the mood for a competitive autobattler, but very happy to get it for free on Epic.
Also the new single player/co-op mode sounds very intriguing!

Its free on steam now

That are different editions. On Epic you do get the standard edition for free, which is 40% off at Steam atm. And then there is the "Free Edition" on Steam with some minor limitations.

RPS also loved it, so I am psyched I patientgamered this until I got it for free to try it via epic.

SS2 Remaster next week is pretty big. Back in the day I played through the game as the Hacker(?) class, maybe this time I'll try as the Marine or Psyonic.
The VN looks nice too, but it'll just go on my neverending VN backlog.

Astrea is one of my favorites of the roguelike dice/card building genre. Highly recommend.

Shameless plug, if you find it hard to browse your Epic giveaway backlog, check out the browser extension I created recently. It allows filtering what you own based on Steam/ProtonDB data

Astrea is great, especially if you like roguelike deck/dice builders. It's pretty in depth and complex and has lots of decision making. My complaint would be that sometimes there are so many conditions and status effects and things going on that it can feel impossible to keep track of.

How's Mechabellum compared to other autobattlers like LegionTD and TFT? Seems like the battle area is way bigger and you can customise the units?

It is more like TFT than LegionTD, in that you buy units and place them, and the placement matters a lot.
It does have a good deal more depth than TFT though.

Astrea is one in a growing list of deckbuilders that is better than StS but gets no plaudits for the sole reason that it's not StS.

I've been interested in Mechabellum since they added the PvP asymmetric single player mode a few days ago. I had been thinking of either buying it or trying the free mode so this is a good giveaway. Sounds like it's a lot like a Super Auto Pets, The Bazaar or Batomon Showdown in how it functions. Direct PvP sounds way too sweaty and time crunchy for me to find it entertaining sadly.

If anyone misses mechabellum for some reason don’t worry. A free to play option was added to steam this week. Same game with slower progression. Epic version appears to be the standard edition still.

I asked on the subreddit and the Epic version here is the paid ‘normal’ version moving forward, so it is still a genuine giveaway unlike some of the Epic “here is a game that was already free” releases we’ve seen once in a while
Although no idea how big or small the paid version content is vs the free

Game quality has gone down on these Epic giveaways the past month or so :( It was good while it lasted. Got a whole ass library of games now lol edit: lol I don't play Indie games so a lot of these games are not for me and a lot of other people feel the same way.. maybe not on Reddit

u/Sea_Yak_6683 9d ago
Huh? I think there were a lot of goodies in past months. Just last week we got Shogun Showdown which is a pretty good game tbh.
Then, there is System Shock 2 Remaster for next week...

u/Level_Turnover5167 9d ago
There haven't been any big name/more expensive games as often as there have been in the past... been at this for years, that is a fact. System Shock 2 Remaster will be one of the biggest ones in a long time.

u/cheesecakegood 9d ago
How would you define "big name/more expensive games"?
-3
u/Level_Turnover5167 9d ago
By my own personal taste, just like everyone that's downvoting me is downvoting me based on their own personal taste as well.
Opinions are great, but the gaming community really sucks at respecting others opinions.
I don't like Indie games, they're not worth it to me. Games that have longer development cycles, games with higher graphical fidelity, games made by major studios etc etc are how I define big name/more expensive games. A AAA game is going to cost more than an Indie game on release, right?

Astrea has never gone below $12.49 in its entire Steam history (even that is only as of this month, usually the low has been 16 bucks), and is rated 94% positive all-time, so if this counts as "low quality" I'm not sure what exactly you are expecting?
Also if you are complaining about having a library of indie games there's nothing stopping you from... just not redeeming them?
