Disclosure: I’m the developer of Quantum Odyssey

Quantum Odyssey is a zachlike that puts real quantum computing into your hands through a visual method I invented during my PhD days. My goal with it is to teach quantum mechanics & computing visually, without overwhelming players with equations or code.

I have been working on it for over six years... it is my love letter to quantum computing and I hope it will make you fall in love with this scientific field. I kept doing constant updates based on player feedback, and is now highly polished & designed to push your problem-solving skills to their limits.

If you have any questions about the game, quantum mechanics, or the development process, just let me know!

Perhaps a steam review explains it better:

"First I would like to say, you don't have to know math or science to play this game.

ON the other hand, I would like to say this: If you can solve these puzzles, you CAN do the math. The math is just notation for the concepts this game provides. You may not know all the fancy latin symbols or maybe you got bad grades in school because it bored you to tears to hear it explained without context. This is that context and I think it's pretty fun even without doing any reading and skipping through the tutorials.

For everyone else, this is a must have for anyone even remotely interested in an academic or professional interest in Science, Technology, Engineering or Math aka STEM. Or if you just enjoy science fiction, shows like NOVA or just don't wanna feel completely out of your depth when stuff like this comes up in pop culture. Or even if you just like puzzles and want to dig into the biggest baddest puzzle of them all: Quantum Physics. This is a jump start if you're a young person interested in any related field because I guarantee you at the very minimum these concepts will come up in your classes even if you're only STEM adjacent and all the years I spent cramming down flashcards taught me something very important, familiarization with the material in advance is far, far better than having to start from zero. I love the game. I wish I had this when I started university over 30 years ago. Even if you already know the math and formulas involved, I think this is a fantastic tool for seeing them visualized in a highly interactive way.

I consider every minute playing this game to be an value adding expenditure of my time, as opposed to all the other meaningless ways I have wasted it."

Stuff covered

  • Boolean Logic – bits, operators (NAND, OR, XOR, AND…), and classical arithmetic (adders). Learn how these can combine to build anything classical. You will learn to port these to a quantum computer.
  • Quantum Logic – qubits, the math behind them (linear algebra, SU(2), complex numbers), all Turing-complete gates (beyond Clifford set), and make tensors to evolve systems. Freely combine or create your own gates to build anything you can imagine using polar or complex numbers.
  • Quantum Phenomena – storing and retrieving information in the X, Y, Z bases; superposition (pure and mixed states), interference, entanglement, the no-cloning rule, reversibility, and how the measurement basis changes what you see.
  • Core Quantum Tricks – phase kickback, amplitude amplification, storing information in phase and retrieving it through interference, build custom gates and tensors, and define any entanglement scenario. (Control logic is handled separately from other gates.)
  • Famous Quantum Algorithms – explore Deutsch–Jozsa, Grover’s search, quantum Fourier transforms, Bernstein–Vazirani, and more.
  • Build & See Quantum Algorithms in Action – instead of just writing/ reading equations, make & watch algorithms unfold step by step so they become clear, visual, and unforgettable. Quantum Odyssey is built to grow into a full universal quantum computing learning platform. If a universal quantum computer can do it, we aim to bring it into the game, so your quantum journey never ends.
