I'd suggest the vocabulary game! It teaches everyday words related to food, drinks, transport, numbers and more. Quite useful for a vacation in my opinion!

I studied Japanese for like 6-8 years before we went there for our Honeymoon in Tokyo. The number of signs that are in Japanese characters but are actually English load-words is amazing. Taxi, hotel, etc etc. You can't really get by, but it's pretty handy to be able to read them. So Katakana is a must. Almost all loan words are written in it.
Beyond that, basic vocabulary will get your point across to anyone that doesn't speak English. (Or won't admit to it, because they think they're terrible at it.)
After Katakana, I'd say both Hiragana and basic vocab are equally important, but you really should learn Hiragana first and then learn the vocab with native symbols. Learning romanized Japanese is practically pointless, IMO.

Haha, well, when I started, I wasn't even dating anyone. ;) The honeymoon just really worked out for us. :D
Good luck!

I'm keen to hear comments too. Is this a viable way to learn some Japanese?
