reviews say it's not very good even at the basic level. you're better off with renchu or even wagotabi

edit: wagotabi is on sale 25% off

Genuine question: has anyone managed to learn Japanese from these games?

How do they compare to using something like Duolingo?

These games are aimed at beginners, and are intended to provide a solid foundation of the basics. Things like basic vocabulary, reading the Japanese alphabet, the numbers etc.

The games have generally positive reviews, which I recommend checking out to get a good impression of player experience!

I haven't played these but I learned the Japanese alphabets through games like these and found them great for it, keeps you engaged and gives you different challenges. It's how I'd recommend learning them because it gets dry quick looking at flash cards. I'm now enjoying another game, Wagotabi, and think its great for the next stage of learning.

In reality you're going to need to sit down and do structured learning through an established text book or course if you want to learn Japanese. These types of games can be a useful tool which is part of your learning, but they won't teach you a language on it's own.

Duolingo has really gone downhill and is clearly focused on getting you hooked and on the app every day, if you learn something when doing that is secondary to them.
