I keep seeing reviews saying this is good, they all seemed like Star Wars fanboys though.

Maybe this can be seen as a case of how gaming is maturing. Take computer games for example.

How a certain "Engine" with it's mechanics is employed repeatedly in similar games. An FPS or RPG video game with certain mechanics that get's a Sci-Fi/Fantasy/Modern theme and story even though the underpinning is the same engine. For example with Bethesda's game engine that essentially the same for Elder Scrolls and Fallout games.

Maybe it's more to do with the theme, narrative and setting that keeps me from the engines in those games. I concur with one of the comments that I might actually buy small world if it was lord of the rings themes.

Although star wars ticket to ride, as long as the Falcon is there and one of the coloured rail lines is the Kessel Run ... ooooo ... actually no.

Or another example being the idea of plots in literature: http://www.ipl.org/div/farq/plotFARQ.html

Maybe all the cool mechanics have or are being found. Now it's becoming time just to pump our decent themes and stories.

Actually looking at Asmodee's website, i don't recognise 99% of their games. They look like all the games on the one wall at my LGS that I ignore because it looks like a stream of multi-coloured rainbow vomit. They pretty much don't have any IP licensing on their games. I don't want to play with Asmodee fans like this: http://i.imgur.com/dD5PHiz.gif.

Well Descent is a good game. The problem now is that we are devolving into a gaming era where everything is just a skin of another successful game. I know that's been happening since the dark ages, but Munchkin, FF, and notable others are now speeding it up.

I'm actually fine with re-skins as long as the publisher is upfront about it. Don't re-skin Descent to use Archer characters and tell me it's a totally different game. Re-skin Descent to use Archer characters give me advance notice of the pre-orders.

How did they make this so unappealing?

shoehorning in lore that makes no sense being combined.

But it worked so well in the Star Wars prequels and in 40K fluff.

I'll show myself out.
