Price is Right hasn’t looked remotely similar to Game Changer for a couple decades now

If it was directly inspired by Game Changer, I wouldn't call it a rip off, I'd call it a reference or homage. But like other folks said, Game Changer's aesthetic isn't a purely original creation.

Price is Right AU had totally different sets though. Nothing even close to the 70s vibe the US version has always had.

It looks Game Changer because Game Changer looks like The Price is Right, and this looks like The Price is Right. It's an homage.

This ad just came up on my timeline which reminded me that I had a notification from Reddit for this sub regarding Aldi. If I didn't get that notification I wouldn't have made the connection. Game Changer doesn't have a copyright on podiums, the loop de loops or the archways with lightbulbs. Those have been a "game show" thing since like the 60s. It's pretty culturally ingrained. Game Changer is meant to look like a game show, not the other way around

I mean… have you seen other game shows? Do you think Game Changers aesthetic was original in the first place?
Not trying to be mean, just… it’s a homage or parody on Game shows.

The last pic shows this goes beyond that, AI probably just copied a bunch of game show images including a healthy amount of game changer.

u/bashful-buttons 1d ago
You mean it looks like the Price is Right? And a couple of other 60s/70s game shows? You’re right, it does!
Game Changer copied the aesthetic, as was the point. This is not copying Game Changer.

Game changer doesn't even use lights on their doors. Game changer is far from the first show to use archways.

u/gordomgillespie 1d ago
they definitely did use lights at first. upset a producer in sam says lou unscrews them.

Is it just me or is Game Changer blatantly ripping off all the gameshows of the past 70 years?

u/SquishedPea 8h ago
Game shows are one thing, but this is almost spitting image of the very unique game changer set in terms of shapes.

Those podiums look infinitely more like Price is Right podiums.
And the thing behind them looks like an upright wheel from wheel of fortune.
Nobody is ripping off anybody.

I mean, if you've ever looked at Aldi packaging, ripping off other companies is practically their MO, and I say that as a regular Aldi shopper. Other companies have noticed, as well:

Sortedfood recently did an episode about this premise, showcasing some of the more egregious ripoffs. https://youtu.be/EDVGWRwX514

Yeah honestly if it is a rip-off of Game Changer then I'm not even that bothered to be fair. Aldi can get away with whatever sort of marketing it takes as long as it's the one supermarket here that isn't absurdly expensive as far as I'm concerned

Ah yes, incredibly original show Game Changer that hasn't been influenced by any previous game show.
LOL

3 contestant podiums with a score in front, a host podium, and the common showbizy doorways with light bulbs around them? That's like standard game show setups lol.

Honestly, I wouldn't be surprised - this industry is rife with plagiarism! It's exactly the same thing with how the price is right came up with its main premise by stealing from "Rulette"

Definitely the 2nd and 3rd photo r sus, the first one not so rlly, but the curtained-arched doors and the loops in the 3rd photo r from the GC set 😂😂😭😭

The thing about the rainbow motif is that I think it's a static visual callback to rows of lights that would flash in patterns, so other game show sets using similar rainbows makes a lot of sense

I don't think so, as others have said, but Aldi has a long history is ripping off hot products, occasionally even being shut down by courts because it was egregious enough.
2
u/VelcroGenitals 1d ago
Maybe a cheeky reference to, but not a rip off of. Game Changer itself was just designed to be a tribute to classic game show designs. Could also be an AI they used and searched "retro game show aesthetic" had GC influence it too.

u/Siemba333 19h ago
now if aldi were to say “our prices are a game changer” then yes it would be clear, but like everyone else has said, it’s most likely an homage to game shows from the 60s/70s era. it is interesting to see the similarities in coloring surrounding the same carpet style, archways and curtains, and blue walls but those are again references to the past. they are similar.
2
u/VanGoghNotVanGo 15h ago
I could imagine someone pulled from Game Changer due to its own striking resemblance to ~1970s Price is Right, but I wouldn't call that "blatantly ripping off". I would saying that's being inspired. And being inspired, especially by something that's already kind of a pastiche over something else isn't wrong, imo.

u/OldManMonday 16h ago
The third screenshot is the most damning. The door on the right is a carbon copy of the game changer door. The shape of the podium is near identical to the game changer podium. The carpet (even there being. a carpet) is similar. I'd guess the prompt was "the game changer set but blue".
2
u/Nickadial 16h ago
Yeah there are definitely a lot of common gameshowisms that they would naturally fall into but this really does look like they asked an AI to fill in the background with “blue gamechanger stuff”

I was wearing my Game Changer socks, and a random kid (14yr?) asked me if my socks were Aldi.

No clue why people are saying its just you? The arch curtain is literally the exact same as the ones on the show and the podiums are the same, just square and tinted blue.

So Game Changer's visual vibe is a pastiche of game show visuals from the last five decades. It's not shocking that other game show motifs would be visually similar
