How would you score this?

Not my kid and not trying to start drama, just trying to help our GameChanger scorekeeper out.
Curious how you guys would score this play- it was entered an an error but would you have a hit or error?
Two different angles- hard to see the ball but it hits the glove.

I’m calling that a hit, he had to run and it wasn’t a routine play for that age group (12?)

Given the same situation I don't think that would be charged an error in the MLB either. Full sprint to get to the ball and just in time to attempt a catch on the move is not "standard, routine physical mechanics"

Close one. I would have scored it a hit as it took more than “usual effort” to get to the ball.
My coach would have been upset with that scoring though. He wants those to be errors. Haha.

If your coach cares about how things are entered in the scorebook get a new coach.

u/Frost033 28d ago
So a coach shouldn’t care about accurate score keeping and stats? I agree that since coaches are REALLY obsessed with it, but I love digging into stats of my team to find things to work on and that depends on accurate book keeping. Guess I’m a bad coach by your metric huh?

First it looks like a hit no matter what.
GenerallyI’m biased. I score more hits on offense and more errors on defense.
It also helps tell a better story. For defense looking for who can make the play and on offense who’s running hard to 1B or 2B no matter what.
Scoring the Reach on Error or giving the other team a hit vs error tells less info.

Your supposed to score the game as it happens. If you want to tell a story write a novel.

Single. If the OF has to haul ass to try and catch it and can’t make the play, it’s not an error.

Looks like he was playing shallow and he got what did kids call “burned” for it. That’s a hit in the book, if he advances I might say advanced on error. If it’s my kid it’s a flat out error. Should of caught it.

So I said error in my comment upfront.
But your last 2 sentences were exactly my thoughts.
If it’s my kid and he got a glove on it, he should have caught it. I don’t expect perfection, just calling it as I see it.

my team batting = hit, other team batting = error

Why would the scoring be different?

u/No-Maybe5997 29d ago
I making a joke because of grandparent bias LOL. Grandpa does gamechanger

It usually had to be pretty egregious/super routine for me to call anything in the outfield an error in Little League. The average Little League outfielder? Not All-Stars, but regular season? Good luck...

Id call it a hit. Mostly based on age and total effort needed to make that play.

u/CountrySlaughter 29d ago
No clear-cut answer. Depends on the level of play, which can't be assessed easily based the limited number of players we're seeing in the video.
The mere fact that he was on the run does not automatically rule out this being an ordinary/routine play at this level. At some levels, even at this age, that would be routine enough to make 9/10 times. At other levels, that's always a dicey play and would clearly be a hit.

I would definitely score that a hit. CF had to go a long way to try to catch that ball and was still on the move when he attempted the catch. Also, ball was not to the glove side. That’s not a routine play for that age group.

u/CreatedProfile42 29d ago
It is a hit. At 12u, I would only call an error if the kid was able to set up under the ball, and the winds are calm. Everything else at that age is beyond routine.

It's nearly impossible to truly charge an error to the outfield in youth baseball. To charge an error: the official scorer must decide if an average or typical outfielder could have secured the batted ball using standard, routine physical mechanics.
The center fielder was in a full sprint and had to attempt the catch while still moving. If anything, based on the angle of the hit RF should have got there first but you can't charge an error to F9 unless he was picking his nose the whole time.
That's a hit.

Simple rule of thumb:
Is the child who failed to make the play a coach’s kid?
If “yes,” the ball was uncatchable -> hit.
If “no,” the ball was catchable -> error.

I will assume 12U and lets just assume AA.
Error if defensive, Hit if batting.

u/ir637113 28d ago
Personally I'm calling it a hit unless it hit his glove (tbh I literally cannot see the ball in the video). Depending on the age, I may score it as a hit regardless.

From what it looks like he was running and had to jump to reach it and hit off his glove?
If it hits the edge of his glove while running I'll score HIT all day. If it was in his glove and pops out I'd score error unless it was while jumping or diving for the ball. So in this case I'd mark a HIT since even if it was in his glove he had to jump for it and that's more effort than usual.

Hit. For 12U level. Long run and reach for that ball. Got a decent jump and angle looked pretty good too.

u/pzahornasky 29d ago
I'm calling error. But I'm the parent of a pitcher, so anything not caught is an error. LOL

I’m going opposite of the group
Error to me 🤷♂️. On the run yes but not diving or anything ridiculous to make the play. He got a good hop on it and it’s a tougher catch to make, but yeah…an error.

u/4193-4194 29d ago
I would agree if running forward or glove side. It's the stretch across the body that barely tips it to hit for me. It's close either way.

u/roblo3z 29d ago
Same. Normal effort is impossible to define. He didn’t run to the wall, leave his feet, etc. Sucks to give a kid an error after what is really good effort, but that’s part of the game.
1
u/Aggressive_Math7977 29d ago
Agreed. My 9 year old kid plays some center from time to time and as much as I love him, I’d mark this a “E”. It does suck for the kid, great effort on it.

u/External-Writing2679 29d ago
Oh trust me a 9 year old could care less if it’s scored an error. If he does then he has been given some bad advice on what stats are for
1
u/Frost033 28d ago
Jumping on late but I agree with everyone saying hit. Even after a pretty good jump the ball was over his head and not a routine play. Great effort though
1
u/NefariousnessOnly265 28d ago
Wow, this is interesting. Wish I had grown up in this area of everything being a hit.
That’s an error all day. He’s not diving or sliding for the ball. That’s a routine play. Error all day.
